Combinatorics of the three-parameter PASEP partition function
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18(1) (2011), Article P22 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) on a finite number of sites with open and directed boundary conditions. Its partition function was calculated by Blythe, Evans, Colaiori, and Essler. It is known to be a generating function of permutation tableaux by the combinatorial interpretation of Corteel and Williams. We prove bijectively two new combinatorial interpretations. The first one is in terms of weighted Motzkin paths called Laguerre histories and is obtained by refining a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger. Secondly we show that this partition function is the generating function of permutations with respect to right-to-left minima, right-to-left maxima, ascents, and 31-2 patterns, by refining a bijection of Francon and Viennot. Then we give a new formula for the partition function which generalizes the one of Blythe & al. It is proved in two combinatorial ways. The first proof is an enumeration of lattice paths which are known to be a solution of the Matrix Ansatz of Derrida & al. The second proof relies on a previous enumeration of rook placements, which appear in the combinatorial interpretation of a related normal ordering problem. We also obtain a closed formula for the moments of Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials.
Matrix Ansatz, lattice paths and rook placements

We give two combinatorial interpretations of the Matrix Ansatz of the PASEP in terms of lattice paths and rook placements. This gives two (mostly) combinatorial proofs of a new enumeration formula for the partition function of the PASEP. Besides other interpretations, this formula gives the generating function for permutations of a given size with respect to the number of ascents and occurrences of the pattern 13-2, the generating function according to weak exceedances and crossings, and the n-th moment of certain q-Laguerre polynomials.

Rook placements in Young diagrams and permutation enumeration
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 47(1) (2011), 1--22 • View PublicationBIB
Given two operators $\hat D$ and $\hat E$ subject to the relation $\hat D\hat E -q \hat E \hat D =p$, and a word $w$ in $M$ and $N$, the rewriting of $w$ in normal form is combinatorially described by rook placements in a Young diagram. We give enumerative results about these rook placements, particularly in the case where $p=(1-q)/q^2$. This case naturally arises in the context of the PASEP, a random process whose partition function and stationary distribution are expressed using two operators $D$ and $E$ subject to the relation $DE-qED=D+E$ (matrix Ansatz). Using the link obtained by Corteel and Williams between the PASEP, permutation tableaux and permutations, we prove a conjecture of Corteel and Rubey about permutation enumeration. This result gives the generating function for permutations of given size with respect to the number of ascents and occurrences of the pattern 13-2, this is also the moments of the $q$-Laguerre orthogonal polynomials.

Rook poset equivalence of Ferrers boards
Published • View PublicationBIB
A natural construction due to K. Ding yields Schubert varieties from Ferrers boards. The poset structure of the Schubert cells in these varieties is equal to the poset of maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board under the Bruhat order. We determine when two Ferrers boards have isomorphic rook posets. Equivalently, we give an exact categorization of when two Ding Schubert varieties have identical Schubert cell structures. This also produces a complete classification of isomorphism types of lower intervals of 312-avoiding permutations in the Bruhat order.
Decreasing subsequences in permutations and Wilf equivalence for involutions

In a recent paper, Backelin, West and Xin describe a map $φ^*$ that recursively replaces all occurrences of the pattern $k... 21$ in a permutation $σ$ by occurrences of the pattern $(k-1)... 21 k$. The resulting permutation $φ^*(σ)$ contains no decreasing subsequence of length $k$. We prove that, rather unexpectedly, the map $φ^*$ commutes with taking the inverse of a permutation. In the BWX paper, the definition of $φ^*$ is actually extended to full rook placements on a Ferrers board (the permutations correspond to square boards), and the construction of the map $φ^*$ is the key step in proving the following result. Let $T$ be a set of patterns starting with the prefix $12... k$. Let $T'$ be the set of patterns obtained by replacing this prefix by $k... 21$ in every pattern of $T$. Then for all $n$, the number of permutations of the symmetric group $\Sn_n$ that avoid $T$ equals the number of permutations of $\Sn_n$ that avoid $T'$. Our commutation result, generalized to Ferrers boards, implies that the number of {\em involutions} of $\Sn_n$ that avoid $T$ is equal to the number of involutions of $\Sn_n$ avoiding $T'$, as recently conjectured by Jaggard.

Classification of Ding's Schubert varieties: finer rook equivalence
Published in Canadian J. Math. 59, no. 1 (2007), 36-62 • View PublicationBIB
K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence. We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. The crux of our approach is studying the nilpotence orders of linear forms in the cohomology ring.

Prefix exchanging and pattern avoidance by involutions
Published in Elec. J. Comb. 9 (2) 2003, #R16 • View PublicationBIB
Let I_n(π) denote the number of involutions in the symmetric group S_n which avoid the permutation π. We say that two permutations α,β\in§{j} may be exchanged if for every n, k, and ordering τof j+1,...,k, we have I_n(ατ)=I_n(βτ). Here we prove that 12 and 21 may be exchanged and that 123 and 321 may be exchanged. The ability to exchange 123 and 321 implies a conjecture of Guibert, thus completing the classification of S_4 with respect to pattern avoidance by involutions; both of these results also have consequences for longer patterns. Pattern avoidance by involutions may be generalized to rook placements on Ferrers boards which satisfy certain symmetry conditions. Here we provide sufficient conditions for the corresponding generalization of the ability to exchange two prefixes and show that these conditions are satisfied by 12 and 21 and by 123 and 321. Our results and approach parallel work by Babson and West on analogous problems for pattern avoidance by general (not necessarily involutive) permutations, with some modifications required by the symmetry of the current problem.
