The excluded minors for lattice path polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of lattice path polymatroids as a subclass of the minor-closed class of Boolean polymatroids. Like lattice path matroids and Boolean polymatroids, there are infinitely many excluded minors, but they fall into a small number of easily-described types.
Standard complexes of matroids and lattice paths
Motivated by Gröbner basis theory for finite point configurations, we define and study the class of "standard complexes" associated to a matroid. Standard complexes are certain subcomplexes of the independence complex that are invariant under matroid duality. For the lexicographic term order, the standard complexes satisfy a deletion-contraction-type recurrence. We explicitly determine the lexicographic standard complexes for lattice path matroids using classical bijective combinatorics.

Tree automata and pigeonhole classes of matroids: I
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hlineny's Theorem shows that any sentence in the monadic second-order logic of matroids can be tested in polynomial time, when the input is limited to a class of F-representable matroids with bounded branch-width (where F is a finite field). If each matroid in a class can be decomposed by a subcubic tree in such a way that only a bounded amount of information flows across displayed separations, then the class has bounded decomposition-width. We introduce the pigeonhole property for classes of matroids: if every subclass with bounded branch-width also has bounded decomposition-width, then the class is pigeonhole. An efficiently pigeonhole class has a stronger property, involving an efficiently-computable equivalence relation on subsets of the ground set. We show that Hlineny's Theorem extends to any efficiently pigeonhole class. In a sequel paper, we use these ideas to extend Hlineny's Theorem to the classes of fundamental transversal matroids, lattice path matroids, bicircular matroids, and H-gain-graphic matroids, where H is any finite group. We also give a characterisation of the families of hypergraphs that can be described via tree automata: a family is defined by a tree automaton if and only if it has bounded decomposition-width. Furthermore, we show that if a class of matroids has the pigeonhole property, and can be defined in monadic second-order logic, then any subclass with bounded branch-width has a decidable monadic second-order theory.

Tree automata and pigeonhole classes of matroids: II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $ψ$ be a sentence in the counting monadic second-order logic of matroids and let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field. Hliněný's Theorem says that we can test whether $\mathbb{F}$-representable matroids satisfy $ψ$ using an algorithm that is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to branch-width. In a previous paper we proved there is a similar fixed-parameter tractable algorithm that can test the members of any efficiently pigeonhole class. In this sequel we apply results from the first paper and thereby extend Hliněný's Theorem to the classes of fundamental transversal matroids, lattice path matroids, bicircular matroids, and $H$-gain-graphic matroids, when $H$ is a finite group. As a consequence, we can obtain a new proof of Courcelle's Theorem.

Lattice Path Matroids are 3-Colorable
We show that every lattice path matroid of rank at least two has a quite simple coline, also known as a positive coline. Therefore every orientation of a lattice path matroid is 3-colorable with respect to the chromatic number of oriented matroids introduced by J. Nešetřil, R. Nickel, and W. Hochstättler.

Well-quasi-ordering in lattice path matroids
Lattice path matroids form a subclass of transversal matroids and were introduced by Bonin, de Mier and Noy. Transversal matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, even when the branch-width is restricted. Though lattice path matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, we prove that lattice path matroids of bounded branch-width are well-quasi-ordered.
On lattice path matroid polytopes: integer points and Ehrhart polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate the number of integer points lying in dilations of lattice path matroid polytopes. We give a characterization of such points as polygonal paths in the diagram of the lattice path matroid. Furthermore, we prove that lattice path matroid polytopes are affinely equivalent to a family of distributive polytopes. As applications we obtain two new infinite families of matroids verifying a conjecture of De Loera et.~al. and present an explicit formula of the Ehrhart polynomial for one of them.

Facial structures of lattice path matroid polytopes
A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid corresponding to a pair of lattice paths on the plane. A matroid base polytope is the polytope whose vertices are the incidence vectors of the bases of the given matroid. In this paper, we study facial structures of matroid base polytopes corresponding to lattice path matroids.
A Tutte polynomial inequality for lattice path matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M$ be a matroid without loops or coloops and let $T(M;x,y)$ be its Tutte polynomial. In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that $$\max(T(M;2,0), T(M;0,2))\geq T(M;1,1)$$ holds for graphic matroids. Ten years later, Conde and Merino proposed a multiplicative version of the conjecture which implies the original one. In this paper we prove the multiplicative conjecture for the family of lattice path matroids (generalizing earlier results on uniform and Catalan matroids). In order to do this, we introduce and study particular lattice path matroids, called snakes, used as building bricks to indeed establish a strengthening of the multiplicative conjecture as well as a complete characterization of the cases in which equality holds.

Toric $g$-polynomials of hook shape lattice Path Matroid Polytopes and product of simplices
It is known that a lattice path matroid polytope can be associated with two given noncrossing lattice paths on $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ with the same end points. In this short note we give explicit formulae for the $f$-vector, toric $f$- and $g$-polynomials of a lattice path matroid polytope when two boundary paths enclose a hook shape.

Lattice Path Matroids: Negative Correlation and Fast Mixing
Catalan numbers arise in many enumerative contexts as the counting sequence of combinatorial structures. In this work, we consider natural Markov chains on some of the realizations of the Catalan sequence. While our main result is in deriving an $O(n^2 \log n)$ bound on the mixing time in $L_2$ (and hence total variation) distance for the random transposition chain on Dyck paths, we raise several open questions, including the optimality of the above bound. The novelty in our proof is in establishing a certain negative correlation property among random bases of lattice path matroids, including the so-called Catalan matroid which can be defined using Dyck paths.

Computing the Tutte Polynomial of Lattice Path Matroids Using Determinantal Circuits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a quantum-inspired $O(n^4)$ algorithm computing the Tutte polynomial of a lattice path matroid, where $n$ is the size of the ground set of the matroid. Furthermore, this can be improved to $O(n^2)$ arithmetic operations if we evaluate the Tutte polynomial on a given input, fixing the values of the variables. The best existing algorithm, found in 2004, was $O(n^5)$, and the problem has only been known to be polynomial time since 2003. Conceptually, our algorithm embeds the computation in a determinant using a recently demonstrated equivalence of categories useful for counting problems such as those that appear in simulating quantum systems.

Lattice Path Matroid Polytopes
Fix two lattice paths $P$ and $Q$ from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ that use East and North steps with $P $ never going above $Q$. Bonin et al. show that the lattice paths that go from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ and remain bounded by $P$ and $Q$ can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call it a lattice path matroid. In this paper, we consider properties of lattice path matroid polytopes. These are the polytopes associated to the lattice path matroids. We investigate their face structure, decomposition, triangulation, Ehrhart polynomial and volume.

Pfaffian Circuits
It remains an open question whether the apparent additional power of quantum computation derives inherently from quantum mechanics, or merely from the flexibility obtained by "lifting" Boolean functions to linear operators and evaluating their composition cleverly. Holographic algorithms provide a useful avenue for exploring this question. We describe a new, simplified construction of holographic algorithms in terms of Pfaffian circuits. Novel proofs of some key results are provided, and we extend the approach of [34] to nonsymmetric, odd, and homogenized signatures, circuits, and various models of execution flow. This shows our approach is as powerful as the matchgate approach. Holographic algorithms provide in general $O(n^{ω_p})$ time algorithms, where $ω_p$ is the order of Pfaffian evaluation in the ring of interest (with $1.19 \leq ω_p \leq 3$ depending on the ring) and $n$ is the number of inclusions of variables into clauses. Our approach often requires just the evaluation of an $n \times n$ Pfaffian, and at most needs an additional two rows per gate, whereas the matchgate approach is quartic in the arity of the largest gate. We give examples (even before any change of basis) including efficient algorithms for certain lattice path problems and an $O(n^{ω_p})$ algorithm for evaluation of Tutte polynomials of lattice path matroids. Finally we comment on some of the geometric considerations in analyzing Pfaffian circuits under arbitrary basis change. Connections are made to the sum-product algorithm, classical simulation of quantum computation, and SLOCC equivalent entangled states.
$M$-Shellability of Discrete Polymatroids
In this note we show that every discrete polymatroid is $M$-shellable. This gives, in a partial case, a positive answer to a conjecture of Chari and improves a recent result of Schweig where he proved that the $h$-vector of a lattice path matroid satisfies a conjecture of Stanley.

Toric Ideals of Lattice Path Matroids and Polymatroids

We show that the toric ideal of a lattice path polymatroid is generated by quadrics corresponding to symmetric exchanges, and give a monomial order under which these quadrics form a Gröbner basis. We then obtain an analogous result for lattice path matroids.

A natural family of flag matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A flag matroid can be viewed as a chain of matroids linked by quotients. Flag matroids, of which relatively few interesting families have previously been known, are a particular class of Coxeter matroids. In this paper we give a family of flag matroids arising from an enumeration problem that is a generalization of the tennis ball problem. These flag matroids can also be defined in terms of lattice paths and they provide a generalization of the lattice path matroids of [Bonin et al., JCTA 104 (2003)].

Lattice Path Matroids: Structural Properties
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies structural aspects of lattice path matroids, a class of transversal matroids that is closed under taking minors and duals. Among the basic topics treated are direct sums, duals, minors, circuits, and connected flats. One of the main results is a characterization of lattice path matroids in terms of fundamental flats, which are special connected flats from which one can recover the paths that define the matroid. We examine some aspects related to key topics in the literature of transversal matroids and we determine the connectivity of lattice path matroids. We also introduce notch matroids, a minor-closed, dual-closed subclass of lattice path matroids, and we find their excluded minors.
