Interaction between skew-representability, tensor products, extension properties, and rank inequalities
Skew-representable matroids form a fundamental class in matroid theory, bridging combinatorics and linear algebra. They play an important role in areas such as coding theory, optimization, and combinatorial geometry, where linear structure is crucial for both theoretical insights and algorithmic applications. Since deciding skew-representability is computationally intractable, much effort has been focused on identifying necessary or sufficient conditions for a matroid to be skew-representable.
In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to studying skew-representability and structural properties of matroids and polymatroid functions via tensor products. We provide a characterization of skew-representable matroids, as well as of those representable over skew fields of a given prime characteristic, in terms of tensor products. As an algorithmic consequence, we show that deciding skew-representability, or representability over a skew field of fixed prime characteristic, is co-recursively enumerable: that is, certificates of non-skew-representability -- in general or over a fixed prime characteristic -- can be verified. We also prove that every rank-3 matroid admits a tensor product with any uniform matroid and give a construction yielding the unique freest tensor product in this setting. Finally, as an application of the tensor product framework, we give a new proof of Ingleton's inequality and, more importantly, derive the first known linear rank inequality for folded skew-representable matroids that does not follow from the common information property.
Tensor Product of Polymatroids and Common Information
A new connection between two different necessary conditions for a polymatroid to be linearly representable is presented. Specifically, we prove that the existence of a tensor product with the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements implies the existence of a common information extension for every pair of subsets of the ground set.
Efficient Representation of Lattice Path Matroids
Efficient deterministic algorithms to construct representations of lattice path matroids over finite fields are presented. They are built on known constructions of hierarchical secret sharing schemes, a recent characterization of hierarchical matroid ports, and the existence of isolating weight functions for lattice path matroids whose values are polynomial on the size of the ground set.
A Note on Extension Properties and Representations of Matroids
We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

Linear information and rank inequalities as, for instance, Ingleton inequality, are useful tools in information theory and matroid theory. Even though many such inequalities have been found, it seems that most of them remain undiscovered. Improved results have been obtained in recent works by using the properties from which they are derived instead of the inequalities themselves. We apply here this strategy to the classification of matroids according to their representations and to the search for bounds on secret sharing for matroid ports.
On the representability of the bi-uniform matroid

Every bi-uniform matroid is representable over all sufficiently large fields. But it is not known exactly over which finite fields they are representable, and the existence of efficient methods to find a representation for every given bi-uniform matroid has not been proved. The interest of these problems is due to their implications to secret sharing. The existence of efficient methods to find representations for all bi-uniform matroids is proved here for the first time. The previously known efficient constructions apply only to a particular class of bi-uniform matroids, while the known general constructions were not proved to be efficient. In addition, our constructions provide in many cases representations over smaller finite fields.
