Graphs with large maximum forcing number
For a graph $G$ with order $2n$ and a perfect matching, let $f(G)$ and $F(G)$ denote the minimum and maximum forcing number of $G$ respectively. Then $0\leq f(G)\leq F(G)\leq n-1$. Liu and Zhang [10] ever proposed a conjecture: $e(G)\geq \frac{n^2}{n-F(G)}$, where $e(G)$ denotes the number of edges of $G$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture and obtain $F(G)\leq n-\frac{n^2}{e(G)}$. If $F(G)=n-1$, Liu and Zhang [9] proved that any two perfect matchings of $G$ can be obtained from each other by a series of matching switches along 4-cycles. If $G$ is bipartite and $F(G)\geq n-k$, $1\leq k\leq n-1$, we show that any two perfect matchings of $G$ can be obtained from each other by a series of matching switches along even cycles of length at most $2(k+1)$. Finally, we ask whether $f(G)\geq \lceil\frac{n}{k}\rceil-1$ holds for such bipartite graphs $G$, and give positive answers for the cases $k=1,2$. Further we show all minimum forcing numbers of the bipartite graphs $G$ of order $2n$ and with $F(G)=n-2$ form an integer interval $[\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor, n-2]$.

The maximum forcing numbers of quadriculated tori
Klein and Randic (1985) proposed the concept of forcing number, which has an application in chemical resonance theory. Let $G$ be a graph with a perfect matching $M$. The forcing number of $M$ is the smallest cardinality of a subset of $M$ that is contained only in one perfect matching $M$. The maximum forcing number of $G$ is the maximum value of forcing numbers over all perfect matchings of $G$. Kleinerman (2006) obtained that the maximum forcing number of $2n\times 2m$ quadriculated torus is $nm$. By improving Kleinerman's approach, we obtain the maximum forcing numbers of all 4-regular quadriculated graphs on torus except one class.

Components of domino tilings under flips in quadriculated tori
Published in Discrete Math. 348 (2025) 114396 • Search Publication
In a region R consisting of unit squares, a (domino) tiling is a collection of dominoes (the union of two adjacent squares) which pave fully the region. The flip graph of R is defined on the set of all tilings of R where two tilings are adjacent if we change one from the other by a flip (a 90-degree rotation of a pair of side-by-side dominoes). If R is simply-connected, then its flip graph is connected. By using homology and cohomology, Saldanha, Tomei, Casarin and Romualdo obtained a criterion to decide if two tilings are in the same component of flip graph of quadriculated surface. By a graph-theoretic method, we obtain that the flip graph of a non-bipartite quadriculated torus consists of two isomorphic components. As an application, we obtain that the forcing numbers of all perfect matchings of each non-bipartite quadriculated torus form an integer-interval. For a bipartite quadriculated torus, the components of the flip graph is more complicated, and we use homology to obtain a general lower bound for the number of components of its flip graph.
Components of domino tilings under flips in quadriculated cylinder and torus

In a region $R$ consisting of unit squares, a domino is the union of two adjacent squares and a (domino) tiling is a collection of dominoes with disjoint interior whose union is the region. The flip graph $\mathcal{T}(R)$ is defined on the set of all tilings of $R$ such that two tilings are adjacent if we change one to another by a flip (a $90^{\circ}$ rotation of a pair of side-by-side dominoes). It is well-known that $\mathcal{T}(R)$ is connected when $R$ is simply connected. By using graph theoretical approach, we show that the flip graph of $2m\times(2n+1)$ quadriculated cylinder is still connected, but the flip graph of $2m\times(2n+1)$ quadriculated torus is disconnected and consists of exactly two isomorphic components. For a tiling $t$, we associate an integer $f(t)$, forcing number, as the minimum number of dominoes in $t$ that is contained in no other tilings. As an application, we obtain that the forcing numbers of all tilings in $2m\times (2n+1)$ quadriculated cylinder and torus form respectively an integer interval whose maximum value is $(n+1)m$.

Weighted Dyck paths with special restrictions on the levels of valleys
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper concentrates on the set $\mathcal{V}_n$ of weighted Dyck paths of length $2n$ with special restrictions on the level of valleys. We first give its explicit formula of the counting generating function in terms of certain weight functions. When the weight functions are specialized, some connections are builded between $\mathcal{V}_n$ and other classical combinatorial structures such as $(a,b)$-Motzkin paths, $q$-Schröder paths, Delannoy paths and complete $k$-ary trees. Some bijections are also established between these settings and $\mathcal{V}_n$ subject to certain special weight functions.

Some tight bounds on the minimum and maximum forcing numbers of graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $2n$ vertices and a perfect matching. We denote by $f(G)$ and $F(G)$ the minimum and maximum forcing number of $G$, respectively. Hetyei obtained that the maximum number of edges of graphs $G$ with a unique perfect matching is $n^2$. We know that $G$ has a unique perfect matching if and only if $f(G)=0$. Along this line, we generalize the classical result to all graphs $G$ with $f(G)=k$ for $0\leq k\leq n-1$, and characterize corresponding extremal graphs as well. Hence we get a non-trivial lower bound of $f(G)$ in terms of the order and size. For bipartite graphs, we gain corresponding stronger results. Further, we obtain a new upper bound of $F(G)$. For bipartite graphs $G$, Che and Chen (2013) obtained that $f(G)=n-1$ if and only if $G$ is complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. We completely characterize all bipartite graphs $G$ with $f(G)= n-2$.
