Lattice path matroids and quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the quotients among lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of their diagrams. This characterization allows us to show that ordering LPMs by quotients yields a graded poset, whose rank polynomial has the Narayana numbers as coefficients. Furthermore, we study full lattice path flag matroids and show that -- contrary to arbitrary positroid flag matroids -- they correspond to points in the nonnegative flag variety. At the basis of this result lies an identification of certain intervals of the strong Bruhat order with lattice path flag matroids. A recent conjecture of Mcalmon, Oh, and Xiang states a characterization of quotients of positroids. We use our results to prove this conjecture in the case of LPMs.

Positivity of Narayana polynomials and Eulerian polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gamma-positivity appears frequently in finite geometries, combinatorics and number theory. Motivated by the recent work of Sagan and Tirrell (Adv. Math., 374 (2020), 107387), we study the relationships between gamma-positivity and alternating gamma-positivity. As applications, we derive several alternatingly gamma-positive polynomials related to Narayana polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. In particular, we show the alternating gamma-positivity and Hurwitz stability of a combination of the modified Narayana polynomials of types A and B. By using colored $2\times n$ Young diagrams, we present a unified combinatorial interpretations of three identities involving Narayana numbers of type B. A general result of this paper is that every gamma-positive polynomial is also alternatingly semi-gamma-positive. At the end of this paper, we pose two conjectures, one concerns the Boros-Moll polynomials and the other concerns the enumerators of permutations by descents and excedances.

Some observations about Hankel determinants of the columns of Pascal triangle and related topics
This note collects some facts and conjectures about the Hankel determinants and their generating functions of the columns of Hoggatt triangles which apparently are related to combinatorial objects such as Young tableaux and Narayana numbers.

Riordan arrays and Jacobi and Thron continued fractions
We show that certain Riordan arrays have generating functions that can be expressed as continued fractions of Jacobi and Thron type. We investigate the inverses of such arrays, which in certain circumstances can also have generating functions representable as continued fractions. Links to orthogonal polynomial moment sequences, and to Laurent biorthogonal polynomials are developed. We show that certain Riordan group involutions can be defined by continued fractions. We also show how simple transformations of the Jacobi continued fractions can lead to exponential Riordan arrays. Finally, by way of contrast, we look at the case of some non Riordan arrays that are of combinatorial significance, including the Narayana numbers.

Refinements and Symmetries of the Morris identity for volumes of flow polytopes
Published in Comptes Rendus. Mathématique, Volume 359 (2021) no. 7, pp. 823-851 • View PublicationBIB
Flow polytopes are an important class of polytopes in combinatorics whose lattice points and volumes have interesting properties and relations. The Chan-Robbins-Yuen (CRY) polytope is a flow polytope with normalized volume equal to the product of consecutive Catalan numbers. Zeilberger proved this by evaluating the Morris constant term identity, but no combinatorial proof is known. There is a refinement of this formula that splits the largest Catalan number into Narayana numbers, which Mészáros gave an interpretation as the volume of a collection of flow polytopes. We introduce a new refinement of the Morris identity with combinatorial interpretations both in terms of lattice points and volumes of flow polytopes. Our results generalize Mészáros's construction and a recent flow polytope interpretation of the Morris identity by Corteel-Kim-Mészáros. We prove the product formula of our refinement following the strategy of the Baldoni-Vergne proof of the Morris identity. Lastly, we study a symmetry of the Morris identity bijectively using the Danilov-Karzanov-Koshevoy triangulation of flow polytopes and a bijection of Mészáros-Morales-Striker.
A unifying framework for the $ν$-Tamari lattice and principal order ideals in Young's lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a unifying framework in which both the $ν$-Tamari lattice, introduced by Préville-Ratelle and Viennot, and principal order ideals in Young's lattice indexed by lattice paths $ν$, are realized as the dual graphs of two combinatorially striking triangulations of a family of flow polytopes which we call the $ν$-caracol flow polytopes. The first triangulation gives a new geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari complex introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. We use the second triangulation to show that the $h^*$-vector of the $ν$-caracol flow polytope is given by the $ν$-Narayana numbers, extending a result of Mészáros when $ν$ is a staircase lattice path. Our work generalizes and unifies results on the dual structure of two subdivisions of a polytope studied by Pitman and Stanley.

Symmetry of Narayana numbers and rowvacuation of root posets
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e53 • View PublicationBIB
For a Weyl group $W$ of rank $r$, the $W$-Catalan number is the number of antichains of the poset of positive roots, and the $W$-Narayana numbers refine the $W$-Catalan number by keeping track of the cardinalities of these antichains. The $W$-Narayana numbers are symmetric, i.e., the number of antichains of cardinality $k$ is the same as the number of cardinality $r-k$. However, this symmetry is far from obvious. Panyushev posed the problem of defining an involution on root poset antichains that exhibits the symmetry of the $W$-Narayana numbers. Rowmotion and rowvacuation are two related operators, defined as compositions of "toggles," that give a dihedral action on the set of antichains of any ranked poset. Rowmotion acting on root posets has been the subject of a significant amount of research in the recent past. We prove that for the root posets of classical types, rowvacuation is Panyushev's desired involution.

$q$-Kreweras numbers for coincidental Coxeter groups attached to limit symbols
For a coincidental Coxeter group, i.e. of type $A_{n-1}, BC_n, H_3,$ or $I_2(m)$, we define the corresponding $q$-Kreweras numbers attached to limit symbols in the sense of Shoji. The construction of these numbers resembles the argument of Reiner and Sommers and these two share similar properties, but our version is slightly different from and combinatorially simpler than theirs. We also study the combinatorial properties of our $q$-Kreweras numbers, i.e. positivity, relation with $q$-Narayana numbers, and cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Linear $k$-Chord Diagrams
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 23 (2020), Article 20.9.1 • Search Publication
We generalize the notion of linear chord diagrams to the case of matched sets of size $k$, which we call $k$-chord diagrams. We provide formal generating functions and recurrence relations enumerating these $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, where the latter is defined as all members of the matched set being adjacent, and is the generalization of a short chord or loop in a linear chord diagram. We also enumerate $k$-chord diagrams by the number of connected components built from short chords and provide the associated generating functions in this case. We show that the distributions of short chords and connected components are asymptotically Poisson, and provide the associated means. Finally, we provide recurrence relations enumerating non-crossing $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, generalising the Narayana numbers, and establish asymptotic normality, providing the associated means and variances. Applications to generalized games of memory are also discussed.

Lefschetz theory for exterior algebras and fermionic diagonal coinvariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be an irreducible complex reflection group acting on its reflection representation $V$. We consider the doubly graded action of $W$ on the exterior algebra $\wedge (V \oplus V^*)$ as well as its quotient $DR_W := \wedge (V \oplus V^*)/ \langle \wedge (V \oplus V^*)^{W}_+ \rangle$ by the ideal generated by its homogeneous $W$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We describe the bigraded isomorphism type of $DR_W$; when $W = \mathfrak{S}_n$ is the symmetric group, the answer is a difference of Kronecker products of hook-shaped $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules. We relate the Hilbert series of $DR_W$ to the (type A) Catalan and Narayana numbers and describe a standard monomial basis of $DR_W$ using a variant of Motzkin paths. Our methods are type-uniform and involve a Lefschetz-like theory which applies to the exterior algebra $\wedge (V \oplus V^*)$.

Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials. We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting. The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce. In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.

On flips in planar matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate the structure of flip graphs on non-crossing perfect matchings in the plane. Specifically, consider all non-crossing straight-line perfect matchings on a set of $2n$ points that are placed equidistantly on the unit circle. A flip operation on such a matching replaces two matching edges that span an empty quadrilateral with the other two edges of the quadrilateral, and the flip is called centered if the quadrilateral contains the center of the unit circle. The graph $\mathcal{G}_n$ has those matchings as vertices, and an edge between any two matchings that differ in a flip, and it is known to have many interesting properties. In this paper we focus on the spanning subgraph $\mathcal{H}_n$ of $\mathcal{G}_n$ obtained by taking all edges that correspond to centered flips, omitting edges that correspond to non-centered flips. We show that the graph $\mathcal{H}_n$ is connected for odd $n$, but has exponentially many small connected components for even $n$, which we characterize and count via Catalan and generalized Narayana numbers. For odd $n$, we also prove that the diameter of $\mathcal{H}_n$ is linear in $n$. Furthermore, we determine the minimum and maximum degree of $\mathcal{H}_n$ for all $n$, and characterize and count the corresponding vertices. Our results imply the non-existence of certain rainbow cycles in $\mathcal{G}_n$, and they resolve several open questions and conjectures raised in a recent paper by Felsner, Kleist, Mütze, and Sering.

A Recursion for the FiboNarayana and the Generalized Narayana Numbers
The Lucas polynomials, $\{n\}$, are polynomials in $s$ and $t$ given by $\{ n \} = s \{ n-1 \} + t \{ n-2 \}$ for $n \geq 2$ with $ \{ 0 \} = 0$ and $\{ 1 \} = 1$. The lucanomial coefficients, an analogue of the binomial coefficients, are given by \[ \Bigl\{ \begin{array}{c} n\\k \end{array} \Bigr \} = \frac{ \{n\}! }{ \{k\}! \{n-k\}!}. \] When $s = t = 1$ then $\{ n \} = F_n$ and the lucanomial coefficient becomes the fibonomial coefficient \[ \binom{n}{k}_F = \frac{F_n!}{F_k! F_{n-k}!}. \] The well-known Narayana numbers, $N_{n,k}$ satisfy the equation \[ N_{n,k} = \frac{1}{n} \binom{n}{k} \binom{n}{k-1}. \] \[ %C_n = \sum_{k=1}^n N_{n,k}. %\] In 2018, Bennett, Carrillo, Machacek and Sagan defined the generalized Narayana numbers and conjectured that these numbers are positive integers for $n \geq 1$. In this paper we define the FiboNarayana number $N_{n,k,F}$ and give a new recurrence relation for both the FiboNarayana numbers and the generalized Narayana numbers, proving the conjecture that these are positive integers for $n \geq 1$.

Motzkin path on RNA abstract shapes
We consider a certain abstract of RNA secondary structures, which is closely related to RNA shapes. The generating function counting the number of the abstract structures is obtained by means of Narayana numbers and 2-Motzkin paths, through which we provide an identity related to Narayana numbers and Motzkin polynomials. Furthermore, we show that a combinatorial interpretation on 2-Motzkin paths leads to the correspondence between 1-Motkzin paths and RNA shapes, which facilitates probing further classifications or abstractions of the shapes. In this paper, we classify the shapes with respect to the number of components and calculate their asymptotic distributions.

Multivariate polynomials for generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the notion of Mahonian statistic on acyclic posets, we introduce a $q$-analogue of the $h$-polynomial of a simple generalized permutohedron. We focus primarily on the case of nestohedra and on explicit computations for many interesting examples, such as $S_n$-invariant nestohedra, graph associahedra, and Stanley--Pitman polytopes. For the usual (Stasheff) associahedron, our generalization yields an alternative $q$-analogue to the well-studied Narayana numbers.

A combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Enomoto showed for finite dimensional algebras that the classification of exact structures on the category of finitely generated projective modules can be reduced to the classification of 2-regular simple modules. In this article, we give a combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras and we use this classification to answer several natural questions such as when there is a unique exact structure on the category of finitely generated projective modules for Nakayama algebras. We also classify 1-regular simple modules, quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras and Nakayama algebras of global dimension at most two. It turns out that most classes are enumerated by well-known combinatorial sequences, such as Fibonacci, Riordan and Narayana numbers. We first obtain interpretations in terms of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the algebra using homological algebra, and then apply suitable bijections to relate these to combinatorial statistics on Dyck paths.

Stein's method and Narayana numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Narayana numbers appear in many places in combinatorics and probability, and it is known that they are asymptotically normal. Using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs, we provide an error of approximation in total variation to a symmetric binomial distribution of order~$n^{-1}$, which also implies a Kolmogorov bound of order~$n^{-1/2}$ for the normal approximation. Our exchangeable pair is based on a birth-death chain and has remarkable properties, which allow us to perform some otherwise tricky moment computations. Although our main interest is in Narayana numbers, we show that our main abstract result can also give improved convergence rates for the Poisson-binomial and the hypergeometric distributions.

A combinatorial approach to scattering diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattering diagrams arose in the context of mirror symmetry, but a special class of scattering diagrams (the cluster scattering diagrams) were recently developed to prove key structural results on cluster algebras. We use the connection to cluster algebras to calculate the function attached to the limiting wall of a rank-2 cluster scattering diagram of affine type. In the skew-symmetric rank-2 affine case, this recovers a formula due to Reineke. In the same case, we show that the generating function for signed Narayana numbers appears in a role analogous to a cluster variable. In acyclic finite type, we construct cluster scattering diagrams of acyclic finite type from Cambrian fans and sortable elements, with a simple direct proof.

Identities involving Narayana numbers
Narayana's cows problem is a problem similar to the Fibonacci's rabbit problem. We define the numbers which are the solutions of this problem as Narayana's cows numbers. Narayana's cows sequence satisfies the third order recurrence relation $N_{r}=N_{r-1}+N_{r-3}$ ($r\geq3$) with initial condition $N_{0} =0$, $N_{1} = N_{2}= 1$. In this paper, the $ar+b$ subscripted Narayana numbers will be expressed by three $a$ step apart Narayana numbers for any $1\leq b\leq a$ ($a\in \mathbb{Z}$). Furthermore, we study the sum $S_{N,r}^{(4,b)}=\sum_{k=0}^{r}N_{4k+b}$ of $4$ step apart Narayana numbers for any $1\leq b\leq 4$.
Extensions of partial cyclic orders and consecutive coordinate polytopes
Published in Ann. Henri Lebesgue, 3, 275-297, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce several classes of polytopes contained in $[0,1]^n$ and cut out by inequalities involving sums of consecutive coordinates. We show that the normalized volumes of these polytopes enumerate circular extensions of certain partial cyclic orders. Among other things this gives a new point of view on a question popularized by Stanley. We also provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of some of these polytopes in terms of descents of total cyclic orders. The Euler numbers, the Eulerian numbers and the Narayana numbers appear as special cases.
