Derangement permutation matrices and orbit harmonics
Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $S = \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring over these variables where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. Regard $S$ as the coordinate ring of the affine space $\mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ of $n \times n$ $\mathbb{F}$-matrices. Let $\mathfrak{D}_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ be the locus of derangement permutation matrices. We study the orbit harmonics quotient ring ${\bf R}(\mathfrak{D}_n) = S/\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ where $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ is the associated graded ideal of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n) \subseteq S$. We give an explicit generating set of $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n),$ relate the Hilbert series of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ to the Foata transformation and the longest increasing subsequence statistic on $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and give an alternating sum formula for the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-character of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$. Our proofs make heavy use of the mapping cone construction of homological algebra.

Relations between categorifications of higher-dimensional type $A$ cluster combinatorics
We consider three categories arising from the higher Auslander algebras of type $A$ in relation to $d$-dimensional cluster combinatorics: $d$-exact subcategory of the module category of $A^d_{n+1}$ generated by the $d$-cluster-tilting object, the $(d+2)$-angulated cluster category, and the $d$-almost positive subcategory of the derived category (the higher analogue of the category of two-term complexes of projectives). We show that the third one, introduced by the second-named author, is the $d$-exangulated quotient of the other two, introduced by Oppermann and Thomas, by the ideals generated by morphisms factoring through morphisms from injective to projective objects, thus providing an algebraic connection between the two models of Oppermann-Thomas. This is a $d$-exangulated version in type $A$ of a result of Brüstle and Yang and its interpretation by the first-named author together with Fang, Palu, Plamondon and Pressland. It also explains a well-known coincidence between the number of 2-term silting complexes in type $A_{n}$ and of tilting modules in type $A_{n+1}$ from the $0$-Auslander perspective. We expect this to serve as a prototypical example of the $0$-Auslander correspondence in higher homological algebra.

The geometric Merkurjev-Panin Conjecture for the Cox category
We show that a strong version of the geometric Merkurjev-Panin conjecture holds for the Cox category of a projective toric variety. That is, we prove that the full strong exceptional collection of Bondal-Thomsen line bundles is invariant under the group of lattice automorphisms that permute the rays of the toric variety's fan. Our result is meant to further illustrate that the Cox category is a natural repository for homological algebra on toric varieties.
Pure minimal injective resolutions and perfect modules for lattices
In a recent article, Iyama and Marczinzik showed that a lattice is distributive if and only if the incidence algebra is Auslander regular, giving a new connection between homological algebra and lattice theory. In this article we study when a distributive lattice has a pure minimal injective coresolution, a notion first introduced and studied in a work of Ajitabh, Smith and Zhang. We will see that this problem naturally leads to studying when certain antichain modules are perfect modules. We give a classification of perfect antichain modules under the assumption that their canonical antichain resolution is minimal and use this to give a completion classification in lattice theoretic terms of incidence algebras of distributive lattices with pure minimal injective coresolution. We use our results to answer a question raised by Ajitabh, Smith and Zhang by showing that there exist Auslander-Gorenstein polynomial identity rings without a pure injective coresolution.
Stabilization of the Spread-Global Dimension
Motivated by constructions from applied topology, there has been recent interest in the homological algebra of linear representations of posets, particularly in the context of homological algebra relative to non-standard exact structures. A prominent example is the spread exact structure on the category of representations of a fixed poset, in which the indecomposable projectives are the spread representations (that is, the indicator representations of convex and connected subsets). The spread-global dimension is known to be finite for finite posets and not uniformly bounded on the collection of all Cartesian products between two arbitrary finite total orders. It was conjectured in [AENY23] that the spread-global dimension is uniformly bounded on the collection of all Cartesian products between a fixed finite total order and an arbitrary finite total order. We provide a positive answer to this conjecture and, more generally, prove that the spread-global dimension is uniformly bounded on the collection of all Cartesian products between a fixed finite poset and an arbitrary finite total order. In doing so, we also establish the existence of finite spread-resolutions for finitely presented representations of arbitrary grid posets.

DG-Sensitive Pruning & a Complete Classification of DG Trees and Cycles
Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $Q$, we show that if the minimal free resolution $\mathbb{F}$ of $Q/I$ admits the structure of a differential graded (dg) algebra, then so does any "pruning" of $\mathbb{F}$. As an application, we show that if $Q/\mathcal{F}(Δ)$, the quotient of the ambient polynomial ring by the facet ideal $\mathcal{F}(Δ)$ of a simplicial complex $Δ$, is minimally resolved by a dg algebra, then so is the quotient by the facet ideal of each facet-induced subcomplex of $Δ$ (over the smaller polynomial ring). Along with techniques from discrete Morse theory and homological algebra, this allows us to give complete classifications of the trees and cycles $G$ with $Q/I_G$ minimally resolved by a dg algebra in terms of the diameter of $G$, where $I_G$ is the edge ideal of $G$.

Tropical Lagrangian coamoebae and free resolutions
We study the coamoebae of Lagrangian submanifolds of $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$, specifically how the combinatorics of their degenerations encodes the homological algebra of mirror coherent sheaves. Concretely, to a minimal free resolution $F^\bullet$ of a module $M$ over $\mathbb{C}[z_1^{\pm 1}, \dotsc, z_n^{\pm 1}]$ we associate a simplicial complex $T(F^\bullet) \subset T^n$. We call $T(F^\bullet)$ a tropical Lagrangian coamoeba. We show that the discrete information in $F^\bullet$ can often be recovered from $T(F^\bullet)$, and that more generally $M$ is mirror to a certain constructible sheaf supported on $T(F^\bullet)$. The resulting interplay between coherent sheaves on $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$ and simplicial complexes in $T^n$ provides a higher-dimensional generalization of the spectral theory of dimer models in $T^2$, as well as a symplectic counterpart to the theory of brane brick models.

A Categorical Approach to Möbius Inversion via Derived Functors
We develop a cohomological approach to Möbius inversion using derived functors in the enriched categorical setting. For a poset $P$ and a closed symmetric monoidal abelian category $\mathcal{C}$, we define Möbius cohomology as the derived functors of an enriched hom functor on the category of $P$-modules. We prove that the Euler characteristic of our cohomology theory recovers the classical Möbius inversion, providing a natural categorification. As a key application, we prove a categorical version of Rota's Galois Connection. Our approach unifies classical ideas from combinatorics with homological algebra.
Higher homological algebra for one-point extensions of bipartite hereditary algebras and spectral graph theory
In this article we study higher homological properties of $n$-levelled algebras and connect them to properties of the underlying graphs. Notably, to each $2$-representation-finite quadratic monomial algebra $Λ$ we associate a bipartite graph $\overline{B_Λ}$ and we classify all such algebras $Λ$ for which $\overline{B_Λ}$ is regular or edge-transitive. We also show that if $\overline{B_Λ}$ is semi-regular, then it is a reflexive graph.

Homological algebra and poset versions of the Garland method
Garland introduced a vanishing criterion for a characteristic zero cohomology group of a locally finite and locally connected simplicial complex. The criterion is based on the spectral gaps of the graph Laplacians of the links of faces and has turned out to be effective in a wide range of examples. In this note we extend the approach to include a range of non-simplicial (co)chain complexes associated to combinatorial structures we call Garland posets and elaborate further on the case of cubical complexes.

On $q$-deformed Farey sum and a homological interpretation of $q$-deformed real quadratic irrational numbers
The left and right $q$-deformed rational numbers were introduced by Bapat, Becker and Licata via regular continued fractions, and they gave a homological interpretation for left and right $q$-deformed rational numbers. In the present paper, we focus on negative continued fractions and defined left $q$-deformed negative continued fractions. We give a formula for computing the $q$-deformed Farey sum of the left $q$-deformed rational numbers based on it. We use this formula to give a combinatorial proof of the relationship between the left $q$-deformed rational number and the Jones polynomial of the corresponding rational knot which was proved by Bapat, Becker and Licata using a homological technique. Finally, we combine their work and the $q$-deformed Farey sum, and give a homological interpretation of the $q$-deformed Farey sum. We also give an approach to finding a relationship between real quadratic irrational numbers and homological algebra.

Homological algebra of Nakayama algebras and 321-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linear Nakayama algebras over a field $K$ are in natural bijection to Dyck paths and Dyck paths are in natural bijection to 321-avoiding bijections via the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection. Thus to every 321-avoiding permutation $π$ we can associate in a natural way a linear Nakayama algebra $A_π$. We give a homological interpretation of the fixed points statistic of 321-avoiding permutations using Nakayama algebras with a linear quiver. We furthermore show that the space of self-extension for the Jacobson radical of a linear Nakayama algebra $A_π$ is isomorphic to $K^{\mathfrak{s}(π)}$, where $\mathfrak{s}(π)$ is defined as the cardinality $k$ such that $π$ is the minimal product of transpositions of the form $s_i=(i,i+1)$ and $k$ is the number of distinct $s_i$ that appear.

Homological algebra of modules over posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to that of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations and resolutions. Centrally at issue is how to define finiteness to replace the noetherian hypothesis which fails. The tameness condition introduced for this purpose captures finiteness for variation in families of vector spaces indexed by posets in a way that is characterized equivalently by distinct topological, algebraic, combinatorial, and homological manifestations. Tameness serves both theoretical and computational purposes: it guarantees finite presentations and resolutions of various sorts, all related by a syzygy theorem, amenable to algorithmic manipulation. Tameness and its homological theory are new even in the finitely generated discrete setting of $\mathbb{N}^n$-gradings, where tame is materially weaker than noetherian. In the context of persistent homology of filtered topological spaces, especially with multiple real parameters, the algebraic theory of tameness yields topologically interpretable data structures in terms of birth and death of homology classes.

Edge ideals of Erdös-Rényi random graphs : Linear resolution, unmixedness and regularity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the homological algebra of edge ideals of Erdös-Rényi random graphs. These random graphs are generated by deleting edges of a complete graph on $n$ vertices independently of each other with probability $1-p$. We focus on some aspects of these random edge ideals - linear resolution, unmixedness and algebraic invariants like the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension and depth. We first show a double phase transition for existence of linear presentation and resolution and determine the critical windows as well. As a consequence, we obtain that except for a very specific choice of parameters (i.e., $n,p := p(n)$), with high probability, a random edge ideal has linear presentation if and only if it has linear resolution. This shows certain conjectures hold true for large random graphs with high probability even though the conjectures were shown to fail for determinstic graphs. Next, we study asymptotic behaviour of some algebraic invariants - the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension and depth - of such random edge ideals in the sparse regime (i.e., $p = \fracλ{n}, λ\in (0,\infty)$). These invariants are studied using local weak convergence (or Benjamini-Schramm convergence) and relating them to invariants on Galton-Watson trees. We also show that when $p \to 0$ or $p \to 1$ fast enough, then with high probability the edge ideals are unmixed and for most other choices of $p$, these ideals are not unmixed with high probability. This is further progress towards the conjecture that random monomial ideals are unlikely to have Cohen-Macaulay property (see De Loera et al. 2019a,2019b) in the setting when the number of variables goes to infinity but the degree is fixed.

Modules over posets: commutative and homological algebra
The commutative and homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to the algebra of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations, primary decompositions, and resolutions. Interpreting this finiteness in the language of derived categories of subanalytically constructible sheaves proves two conjectures due to Kashiwara and Schapira concerning sheaves with microsupport in a given cone. The motivating case is persistent homology of arbitrary filtered topological spaces, especially the case of multiple real parameters. The algebraic theory yields computationally feasible, topologically interpretable data structures, in terms of birth and death of homology classes, for persistent homology indexed by arbitrary posets. The exposition focuses on the nature and ramifications of a suitable finiteness condition to replace the noetherian hypothesis. The tameness condition introduced for this purpose captures finiteness for variation in families of vector spaces indexed by posets in a way that is characterized equivalently by distinct topological, algebraic, combinatorial, and homological manifestations. Tameness serves both the theoretical and computational purposes: it guarantees finite primary decompositions, as well as various finite presentations and resolutions all related by a syzygy theorem, and the data structures thus produced are computable in addition to being interpretable. The tameness condition and its resulting theory are new even in the finitely generated discrete setting, where being tame is materially weaker than being noetherian.

Enumeration and Asymptotic Formulas for Rectangular Partitions of the Hypercube
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 23 (2020) Article 20.1.4 • Search Publication
We study a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers: $C_{d,p}(n)$ is the number of ways to subdivide the $d$-dimensional hypercube into $n$ rectangular blocks using orthogonal partitions of fixed arity $p$. Bremner \& Dotsenko introduced $C_{d,p}(n)$ in their work on Boardman--Vogt tensor products of operads; they used homological algebra to prove a recursive formula and a functional equation. We express $C_{d,p}(n)$ as simple finite sums, and determine their growth rate and asymptotic behaviour. We give an elementary proof of the functional equation, using a bijection between hypercube decompositions and a family of full $p$-ary trees. Our results generalize the well-known correspondence between Catalan numbers and full binary trees.

A combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Enomoto showed for finite dimensional algebras that the classification of exact structures on the category of finitely generated projective modules can be reduced to the classification of 2-regular simple modules. In this article, we give a combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras and we use this classification to answer several natural questions such as when there is a unique exact structure on the category of finitely generated projective modules for Nakayama algebras. We also classify 1-regular simple modules, quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras and Nakayama algebras of global dimension at most two. It turns out that most classes are enumerated by well-known combinatorial sequences, such as Fibonacci, Riordan and Narayana numbers. We first obtain interpretations in terms of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the algebra using homological algebra, and then apply suitable bijections to relate these to combinatorial statistics on Dyck paths.

Direct families of polytopes with nontrivial Massey products
The problem of existence of nontrivial Massey products in cohomology of a space is well-known in algebraic topology and homological algebra. A number of problems in complex geometry, symplectic geometry, and algebraic topology can be stated in terms of Massey products. One of such problems is to establish formality of smooth manifolds in rational homotopy theory. There have already been constructed a few classes of spaces with nontrivial triple Massey products in cohomology. Until now, very few examples of manifolds $M$ with nontrivial higher Massey products in $H^*(M)$ were known. In this work we introduce a sequence of smooth closed manifolds $\{M_{k}\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ such that $M_{k}\hookrightarrow M_{k+1}$ is a submanifold and a retract of $M_{k+1}$ for any $k\geq 1$ and there exists a nontrivial Massey product $\langleα_{1},\ldots,α_{n}\rangle$ in $H^*(M_{k})$ for each $2\leq n\leq k$. The sequence $\{M_k\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ is determined by a new family of flag nestohedra $\mathcal P_{Mas}$. We give P.D.E. for the two-parametric generating series of $\mathcal P_{Mas}$.

Tropical friezes and the index in higher homological algebra
Cluster categories and cluster algebras encode two dimensional structures. For instance, the Auslander--Reiten quiver of a cluster category can be drawn on a surface, and there is a class of cluster algebras determined by surfaces with marked points. Cluster characters are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to cluster algebras. They have a tropical shadow in the form of so-called tropical friezes, which are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to the integers. This paper will define higher dimensional tropical friezes. One of the motivations is the higher dimensional cluster categories of Oppermann and Thomas, which encode $( d+1 )$-dimensional structures for an integer $d \geqslant 1$. They are $( d+2 )$-angulated categories, which belong to the subject of higher homological algebra. We will define higher dimensional tropical friezes as maps from higher cluster categories (and more general $( d+2 )$-angulated categories) to the integers. Following Palu, we will define a notion of $( d+2 )$-angulated index, establish some of its properties, and use it to construct higher dimensional tropical friezes.

Matroids and Canonical Forms: Theory and Applications
This thesis proposes a combinatorial generalization of a nilpotent operator on a vector space. The resulting object is highly natural, with basic connections to a variety of fields in pure mathematics, engineering, and the sciences. For the purpose of exposition we focus the discussion of applications on homological algebra and computation, with additional remarks in lattice theory, linear algebra, and abelian categories. For motivation, we recall that the methods of algebraic topology have driven remarkable progress in the qualitative study of large, noisy bodies of data over the past 15 years. A primary tool in Topological Data Analysis [TDA] is the homological persistence module, which leverages categorical structure to compare algebraic shape descriptors across multiple scales of measurement. Our principle application to computation is a novel algorithm to calculate persistent homology which, in certain cases, improves the state of the art by several orders of magnitude. Included are novel results in discrete, spectral, and algebraic Morse theory, and on the strong maps of matroid theory. The defining theme throughout is interplay between the combinatorial theory matroids and the algebraic theory of categories. The nature of these interactions is remarkably simple, but their consequences in homological algebra, quiver theory, and combinatorial optimization represent new and widely open fields for interaction between the disciplines.
