Rogers-Ramanujan type identities and Chebyshev Polynomials of the third kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that $q$-orthogonal polynomials play an important role in the field of $q$-series and special functions. During studying Dyson's "favorite" identity of Rogers--Ramanujan type, Andrews pointed out that the classical orthogonal polynomials also have surprising applications in the world of $q$. By inserting Chebyshev polynomials of the third and the fourth kinds into Bailey pairs, Andrews derived a family of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities and also results related to mock theta functions and Hecke--type series. In this paper, by constructing a new Bailey pair involving Chebyshev polynomials of the third kind, we further extend Andrews' way in the studying of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities. By fitting this Bailey pair into different weak forms of Bailey's lemma, we obtain a companion identity to Dyson's favorite one and also many other Rogers--Ramanujan type identities. Furthermore, as immediate consequences, we also obtain some results related to Appell--Lerch series and the generalized Hecke--type series.

Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group
Published in J. Integer Sequences, vol. 25 (2022), Article 22.3.6 • Search Publication
We consider pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where the generating function $g$ for the first column of a Riordan array satisfies a palindromic or near-palindromic functional equation. For those types of equations, we find, for very little work, the pseudo-involutory companion of $g$ and have a pseudo-involution in a $k$-Bell subgroup. There are only slight differences in the ordinary and exponential cases. In many cases, we also develop a general method for finding B-functions of Riordan pseudo-involutions in $k$-Bell subgroups, and show that these B-functions involve Chebyshev polynomials. We apply our method for many families of Riordan arrays, both new and already known. We also have some duality and reciprocity results. Since many of the examples we discuss have combinatorial significance, we conclude with a few remarks on the general framework for a combinatorial interpretation of some of the generating function results we obtain.

Combinatorial Relationship Between Finite Fields and Fixed Points of Functions Going Up and Down
We explore a combinatorial bijection between two seemingly unrelated topics: the roots of irreducible polynomials of degree $m$ over a finite field $F_p$ for a prime number $p$ and the number of points that are periodic of order $m$ for a continuous piece-wise linear function $g_p:[0,1]\rightarrow[0,1]$ that \emph{goes up and down $p$ times} with slope $\pm 1/p$. We provide a bijection between $F_{p^n}$ and the fixed points of $g^n_p$ that naturally relates some of the structure in both worlds. Also we extend our result to other families of continuous functions that goes up and down $p$ times, in particular to Chebyshev polynomials, where we get a better understanding of its fixed points. A generalization for other piece-wise linear functions that are not necessarily continuous is also provided.

On the structure of Laplace characteristic polynomial for circulant foliation
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we describe the structure of the Laplace characteristic polynomial $χ_n(λ)$ for the infinite family of graphs $H_n=H_n(G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m)$ obtained as a circulant foliation over a graph $H$ on $m$ vertices with fibers $G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m.$ Each fiber $G_i=C_n(s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_i})$ of this foliation is the circulant graph on $n$ vertices with jumps $s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_i}.$ This family includes the family of generalized Petersen graphs, $I$-graphs, sandwiches of circulant graphs, discrete torus graphs and others. We show that the characteristic polynomial for such graphs can be decomposed into a finite product of algebraic functions evaluated at the roots of a linear combination of Chebyshev polynomials. Also, we prove that the characteristic polynomial can be represented in the form $χ_n(λ)=p(λ)\,χ_H(λ)a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is a sequence of integer polynomials and $p(λ)$ is a prescribed integer polynomial. Moreover, we use the obtained results to produce analytic formulas for spectral graph invariants, such as the number of spanning trees and the number of spanning rooted forests.

On Jacobian group and complexity of the Y-graph
In the present paper we suggest a simple approach for counting Jacobian group of the $Y$-graph $Y(n; k, l, m).$ In the case $Y(n; 1, 1, 1)$ the structure of the Jacobian group will be find explicitly. Also, we obtain a closed formula for the number of spanning trees of $Y$-graph in terms of Chebyshev polynomials and give its asymtotics.

Perfect state transfer in Grover walks between states associated to vertices of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study perfect state transfer in Grover walks, which are typical discrete-time quantum walk models. In particular, we focus on states associated to vertices of a graph. We call such states vertex type states. Perfect state transfer between vertex type states can be studied via Chebyshev polynomials. We derive a necessary condition on eigenvalues of a graph for perfect state transfer between vertex type states to occur. In addition, we perfectly determine the complete multipartite graphs whose partite sets are the same size on which perfect state transfer occurs between vertex type states, together with the time.

Asymptotic Distribution of the Zeros of recursively defined Non-Orthogonal Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the zero distribution of non-orthogonal polynomials attached to $g(n)=s(n)=n^2$: \begin{equation*} Q_n^g(x)= x \sum_{k=1}^n g(k) \, Q_{n-k}^g(x), \quad Q_0^g(x):=1. \end{equation*} It is known that the case $g=id$ involves Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The zeros of $Q_n^s(x)$ are real, simple, and are located in $(-6\sqrt{3},0]$. Let $N_n(a,b)$ be the number of zeros between $-6 \sqrt{3} \leq a < b \leq 0$. Then we determine a density function $v(x)$, such that \begin{equation*} \lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \frac{N_n(a,b)}{n} = \int_a^b v(x) \,\, \mathrm{d}x. \end{equation*} The polynomials $Q_n^s(x)$ satisfy a four-term recursion. We present in detail an analysis of the fundamental roots and give an answer to an open question on recent work by Adams and Tran--Zumba. We extend a method proposed by Freud for orthogonal polynomials to more general systems of polynomials. We determine the underlying moments and density function for the zero distribution.

On abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime. Previously, abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs were introduced which are analogous to $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields. It was shown that for a certain class of towers of bouquets, the growth of the $\ell$-part of the number of spanning trees behaves in a predictable manner (analogous to a well-known theorem of Iwasawa for $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields). In this paper, we give a generalization to a broader class of regular abelian $\ell$-towers of bouquets than was originally considered. To carry this out, we observe that certain shifted Chebyshev polynomials are members of a continuously parametrized family of power series with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ and then study the special value at $s=1$ of the Artin-Ihara $L$-function $\ell$-adically.

Towards quantized complex numbers: $q$-deformed Gaussian integers and the Picard group
Published in Open Communications in Nonlinear Mathematical Physics, Volume 1 (July 29, 2021) ocnmp:7480 • View PublicationBIB
This work is a first step towards a theory of "$q$-deformed complex numbers". Assuming the invariance of the $q$-deformation under the action of the modular group I prove the existence and uniqueness of the operator of translations by~$i$ compatible with this action. Obtained in such a way $q$-deformed Gaussian integers have interesting properties and are related to the Chebyshev polynomials.

Chebyshev-Fibonacci polynomial relations using generating functions
The main object of the paper is to reveal connections between Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds and Fibonacci polynomials introduced by Catalan. This is achieved by relating the respective (ordinary and exponential) generating functions to each other. As a consequence, we also establish new combinatorial identities for balancing polynomials and Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers.

Formulas for coefficients of polynomials assigned to arithmetic functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We attach to normalized (non-vanishing) arithmetic functions $g$ and $h$ recursively defined polynomials. Let $P_0^{g,h}(x):=1$. Then \begin{equation} P_n^{g,h}(x) := \frac{x}{h(n)} \sum_{k=1}^{n} g(k) \, P_{n-k}^{g,h}(x). \end{equation} For special $g$ and $h$, we obtain the D'Arcais polynomials, which are equal to the coefficients of the $-z$th powers of the Dedekind $η$-function and are also given by Nekrasov and Okounkov as a hook length formula. Examples are offered by Pochhammer polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and associated Laguerre polynomials. We present explicit formulas and identities for the coefficients of $P_n^{g,h}(x)$ which separate the impact of $g$ and $h$. Finally, we provide several applications.

Simple eigenvalues of cubic vertex-transitive graphs
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 76 (2024) 1496-1519 • View PublicationBIB
If $v$ is an eigenvector for eigenvalue $λ$ of a graph $X$ and $α$ is an automorphism of $X$, then $α(v)$ is also an eigenvector for $λ$. Thus it is rather exceptional for an eigenvalue of a vertex-transitive graph to be simple. We study cubic vertex-transitive graphs with a non-trivial simple eigenvalue, and discover remarkable connections to arc-transitivity, regular maps and Chebyshev polynomials.

Derivations and identities for Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds
In this paper we follow the general approach, proposed earlier by the first author, which is derived from the invariant theory field and provides a way of obtaining of the polynomial identities for any arbitrary polynomial family. We introduce the notion of Chebyshev derivations of the first and second kinds, which is based on the polynomial algebra, and corresponding specific differential operators. We derive the elements of their kernels and prove that any element of the kernel of the derivations defines a polynomial identity satisfied by the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds. Combining elementary methods and combinatorial techniques, we obtain several new polynomial identities involving the Chebyshev polynomials of the both kinds and a special case of the Jacobi polynomials. Using the properties of the generalised hypergeometric function, we specify the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds via the generalised hypergeometric function and, as a consequence, derive the corresponding identities involving the generalised hypergeometric function and the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds.

A new trigonometric identity with applications
Published in Contrib. Discrete Math. 19 (2024), no. 3, 258-263 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we obtain a new curious identity involving trigonometric functions. Namely, for any positive odd integer $n$ we prove that $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^k(\cot kx)\sin k(n-k)x=\frac{1-n}2,$$ which is equivalent to the identity $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kU_{n-k}(\cos kx)=-\frac{n+1}2,$$ where $U_m(z)$ stands for the $m$th Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind. As a consequence, for any positive odd integer $n$ and positive integer $m$ we obtain $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kk^{2m}B_{2m+1}\left(\frac{n-k}2\right)=0,$$ where $B_j(x)$ denotes the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $j$.

The number of rooted forests in circulant graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we develop a new method to produce explicit formulas for the number $f_{G}(n)$ of rooted spanning forests in the circulant graphs $ G=C_{n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k)$ and $ G=C_{2n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k,n).$ These formulas are expressed through Chebyshev polynomials. We prove that in both cases the number of rooted spanning forests can be represented in the form $f_{G}(n)=p\,a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is an integer sequence and $p$ is a prescribed natural number depending on the parity of $n$. Finally, we find an asymptotic formula for $f_{G}(n)$ through the Mahler measure of the associated Laurent polynomial $P(z)=2k+1-\sum\limits_{i=1}^k(z^{s_i}+z^{-s_i}).$

Re$^3$counting the rationals
In 1999, Neil Calkin and Herbert Wilf wrote "Recounting the rationals" which gave an explicit bijection between the positive integers and the positive rationals. We find several different (some new) ways to construct this enumeration and thus create pointers for generalizing. Next, we use circle packings to generalize and find two other enumerations. Surprisingly, the three enumerations are all that are possible by using this technique. The proofs involve, among other things, "negative" continued fractions, Chebyshev polynomials, Euler's totient function, and generalizations of Stern's diatomic sequence. Finally we look at some of the remarkable similarities -- and differences -- of these sequences.

On Restricted Ternary Words and Insets
We investigate combinatorial properties of a kind of insets we defined in an earlier paper, interpreting them now in terms of restricted ternary words. This allows us to give new combinatorial interpretations of a number of known integer sequences, namely the coefficients of Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, Fibonacci numbers, Delannoy numbers, asymmetric Delannoy numbers, Sulanke numbers, coordinating sequences for some cubic lattices, crystal ball sequences for some cubic lattices, and others. We also obtain several new properties of said insets. In particular, we derive three generating functions when two of three variables are constant. At the end, we state 40 combinatorial configurations counted by our words.
Complexity of the circulant foliation over a graph
In the present paper, we investigate the complexity of infinite family of graphs $H_n=H_n(G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m)$ obtained as a circulant foliation over a graph $H$ on $m$ vertices with fibers $G_{1},\,G_{2},\ldots,G_{m}.$ Each fiber $G_{i}=C_{n}(s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_{i}})$ of this foliation is the circulant graph on $n$ vertices with jumps $s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_{i}}.$ This family includes the family of generalized Petersen graphs, $I$-graphs, sandwiches of circulant graphs, discrete torus graphs and others. We obtain a closed formula for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning trees in $H_{n}$ in terms of Chebyshev polynomials, investigate some arithmetical properties of this function and find its asymptotics as $n\to\infty.$

Chebyshev coordinates and Salem numbers
By expressing polynomials in the basis of Chebyshev polynomials, certain families of hyperbolic polynomials appear naturally. Some of these families have all their roots in the interval $[-2,2]$. In many cases the span of the family of polynomials thus found is greater than 4, and we show that they are the minimal polynomials of Salem numbers, possibly multiplied by some cyclotomic polynomials. In addition, we show how to compute the limit of the largest and smallest roots.

Hopping from Chebyshev polynomials to permutation statistics
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 26(3): Paper #P3.27, 17 pp., 2019 • Search Publication
We prove various formulas which express exponential generating functions counting permutations by the peak number, valley number, double ascent number, and double descent number statistics in terms of the exponential generating function for Chebyshev polynomials, as well as cyclic analogues of these formulas for derangements. We give several applications of these results, including formulas for the $(-1)$-evaluation of some of these distributions. Our proofs are combinatorial and involve the use of monomino-domino tilings, the modified Foata-Strehl action (a.k.a. valley-hopping), and a cyclic analogue of this action due to Sun and Wang.
