Gamma vectors as inverted Chebyshev expansions, type A to B transformations, and connections to algebraic structures
Given a reciprocal/palindromic polynomial of even degree, we show that the gamma vector is essentially given by an inverted Chebyshev polynomial basis expansion. As an immediate consequence, we characterize real-rootedness of a linear combination of Chebyshev polynomials in terms of real-rootedness of that of the reciprocal polynomial built out of an inverted scaled tuple of the coefficients with one fixed and the rest divided by 2. It can be taken as a counterpart for arbitrary dimensions of a recent result of Bel-Afia--Meroni--Telen on hyperbolicity of Chebyshev curves with respect to the origin. In general, Chebyshev varieties serve as a counterpart of toric varieties in sparse polynomial root finding. Apart from this, the inverted Chebyshev expansion also yields connections between intrinsic properties of the gamma vector construction and the geometric combinatorics of simplicial complexes and posets. We find this by applying work of Hetyei on Tchebyshev subdivisions and Tchebyshev posets. In particular, we find that the gamma vector transformation is closely related to $f$-vectors of simplicial complexes resulting from successive edge subdivisions that transform the type A Coxeter complex to the type B Coxeter complex. Lifting to this to a modification of $cd$-indices, we show that the gamma vector inverted Chebyshev polynomial expansion lifts to a sum of (subdivisions of) cross polytopes which can be computed using (topological) descent statistics. While there are many examples where gamma positivity involving descent statistics, it is interesting to note we only assume the input polynomial is reciprocal/palindromic. Finally, Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind from derivatives give connections to Hopf algebras and quasisymmetric functions along with Lefschetz-type maps induced by $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representations.

Spectral convergence of random regular graphs: Chebyshev polynomials, non-backtracking walks, and unitary-color extensions
In this paper, we give a short proof of the weak convergence to the Kesten-McKay distribution for the normalized spectral measures of random $N$-lifts. This result is derived by generalizing a formula of Friedman involving Chebyshev polynomials and non-backtracking walks. We also extend a criterion of Sodin on the convergence of graph spectral measures to regular graphs of growing degree. As a result, we show that for a sequence of random $(q_n+1)$-regular graphs $G_n$ with $n$ vertices, if $q_n = n^{o(1)}$ and $q_n$ tends to infinity, the normalized spectral measure converges almost surely in $p$-Wasserstein distance to the semicircle distribution for any $p \in [1, \infty)$. This strengthens a result of Dumitriu and Pal. Many of the results are extended to unitary-colored regular graphs.

Polynomials and algebraic curves related to certain binary and $b$-ary overpartitions
We begin by considering a sequence of polynomials in three variables whose coefficients count restricted binary overpartitions with certain properties. We then concentrate on two specific subsequences that are closely related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, deriving combinatorial and algebraic properties of some special cases. We show that the zeros of these polynomial sequences lie on certain algebraic curves, some of which we study in greater detail. Finally, we extend part of this work to restricted $b$-ary overpartitions for arbitrary integers $b\geq 2$.

Quadratic embedding constants of fan graphs and graph joins
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 709 (2025), 58-91 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a general formula for the quadratic embedding constant of a graph join $\bar{K}_m+G$, where $\bar{K}_m$ is the empty graph on $m\ge1$ vertices and $G$ is an arbitrary graph. Applying our formula to a fan graph $K_1+P_n$, where $K_1=\bar{K}_1$ is the singleton graph and $P_n$ is the path on $n\ge1$ vertices, we show that $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)=-\tildeα_n-2$, where $\tildeα_n$ is the minimal zero of a new polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ related to Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Moreover, for an even $n$ we have $\tildeα_n=\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$, where the right-hand side is the An minimal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix $A_n$ of $P_n$. For an odd $n$ we show that $\min\mathrm{ev}(A_{n+1})\le\tildeα_n<\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$.
Relations between Chebyshev, Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials via trigonometric sums
In this paper we derive some new identities involving the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials and the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and the second kind. Our starting point is a finite trigonometric sum which equals the resolvent kernel on the discrete circle with $m$ vertices and which can be evaluated in two different ways. An expression for this sum in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials was deduced in \cite{JKS} and the expression in terms of the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials is deduced in this paper. As a consequence, we establish some further identities involving trigonometric sums and Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell and Pell-Lucas polynomials and numbers, thus providing a "physical" interpretation for those identities. Moreover, the finite trigonometric sum of the type considered in this paper can be related to the effective resistance between any two vertices of the $N$-cycle graph with four nearest neighbors $C_{N}(1,2)$. This yields further identities involving Fibonacci numbers.

Chebyshev polynomials, their remarkable properties and connection with Catalan numbers
The main result of the article says that the formal power series equal to the ratio of two neighboring Chebyshev polynomials, after some renormalization, approximates the generating function of the Catalan numbers. We present a proof of this result using continued fractions. Also, for completeness of the presentation, we recall the basic properties of Chebyshev polynomials and formal power series that we use.
Weighted sums of rooted spanning forests on cycles with pendant edges
We derive two formulas for the weighted sums of rooted spanning forests of particular sequence of graphs by using the matrix tree theorem. We consider cycle graphs with edges so called the pendant edges. One of our formula can be described as a variable transformation of the Chebyshev polynomial. They have particular algebraic properties.
On the complexity of Cayley graphs on a dihedral group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the complexity of an infinite family of Cayley graphs $\mathcal{D}_{n}=Cay(\mathbb{D}_{n}, b^{\pmβ_1},b^{\pmβ_2},\ldots,b^{\pmβ_s}, a b^{γ_1}, a b^{γ_2},\ldots, a b^{γ_t} )$ on the dihedral group $\mathbb{D}_{n}=\langle a,b| a^2=1, b^n=1,(a\,b)^2=1\rangle$ of order $2n.$ We obtain a closed formula for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning trees in $\mathcal{D}_{n}$ in terms of Chebyshev polynomials, investigate some arithmetical properties of this function, and find its asymptotics as $n\to\infty.$ Moreover, we show that the generating function $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ is a rational function with integer coefficients.

Operations on the set of scalar and matrix-valued quiddity sequences
Our purpose with this paper is, in first place, to recast the space of quiddity sequences corresponding to usual frieze patterns as a different type of SET operad, and second to introduce and study $\mathfrak{M}$-quiddity sequences where $\mathfrak{M}$ is a monodromy block matrix of order two. Also, we examine some related topic as are the possibility of to define matrix-valued friezes patterns and noncommutative signed Chebyshev polynomials.

Binomial Fibonacci sums from Chebyshev polynomials
We explore new types of binomial sums with Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. The binomial coefficients under consideration are $\frac{n}{n+k}\binom{n+k}{n-k}$ and $\frac{k}{n+k}\binom{n+k}{n-k}$. The identities are derived by relating the underlying sums to Chebyshev polynomials. Finally, some combinatorial sums are studied and a connection to a recent paper by Chu and Guo from 2022 is derived.

Asymptotic analysis of the characteristic polynomial for the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble
We consider the complex Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble, a family of random matrix models introduced by Girko that interpolates between the Ginibre Ensemble and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and such that its empirical spectral measure converges to the uniform measure on an ellipse. We show the convergence in law of its normalised characteristic polynomial outside of this ellipse. Our proof contains two main steps. We first show the tightness of the normalised characteristic polynomial using the link between the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and Hermite polynomials. This part relies on the uniform control of the Hermite kernel which is derived from the recent work of Akemann, Duits and Molag. In the second step, we identify the limiting object as the exponential of a Gaussian analytic function. The limit expression is derived from the convergence of traces of Chebyshev polynomials of random matrices by the method of moments. These traces of Chebyshev polynomials appear naturally as a kind of centered version, or normal ordering, of the traces of the monomials. This work answers the interpolation problem raised in the work of Bordenave, Chafa{ï} and the second author of this paper for the integrable case of the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and is therefore a fist step towards the conjectured universality of this result.
The resolvent kernel on the discrete circle and twisted cosecant sums
Let $X_m$ denote the discrete circle with $m$ vertices. For $x,y\in X_{m}$ and complex $s$, let $G_{X_m,χ_β}(x,y;s)$ be the resolvent kernel associated to the combinatorial Laplacian which acts on the space of functions on $X_{m}$ that are twisted by a character $χ_β$. We will compute $G_{X_m,χ_β}(x,y;s)$ in two different ways. First, using the spectral expansion of the Laplacian, we show that $G_{X_m,χ_β}(x,y;s)$ is a generating function for certain trigonometric sums involving powers of the cosecant function; by choosing $β$ or $s$ appropriately, the sums in question involve powers of the secant function. Second, by viewing $X_{m}$ as a quotient space of $\mathbb{Z}$, we prove that $G_{X_m,χ_β}(x,y;s)$ is a rational function which is given in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. From the existence and uniqueness of $G_{X_m,χ_β}(x,y;s)$, these two evaluations are equal. From the resulting identity, we obtain a means by which one can obtain explicit evaluations of cosecant and secant sums. The identities we prove depend on a number of parameters, and when we specialize the values of these parameters we obtain several previously known formulas. Going further, we derive a recursion formula for special values of the $L$-functions associated to the cycle graph $X_{m}$, thus answering a question from arXiv:2212.13687v1.

Alexander and Jones Polynomials of weaving 3-braid links and Whitney rank polynomials of Lucas lattice
We establish a relationship between the Jones polynomial of generalized weaving knots of type $W(3,n,m)$ and the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind. Consequently, we prove that the coefficients of the Jones polynomial of weaving knots are basically the Whitney numbers of Lucas lattices. Furthermore, we give an explicit formula for the Alexander polynomial of weaving knots $W(3,n)$ and we prove that it satisfies Fox's trapezoidal conjecture.
Optimization of trigonometric polynomials with crystallographic symmetry and spectral bounds for set avoiding graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Trigonometric polynomials are usually defined on the lattice of integers. We consider the larger class of weight and root lattices with crystallographic symmetry. This article gives a new approach to minimize trigonometric polynomials, which are invariant under the associated reflection group. The invariance assumption allows us to rewrite the objective function in terms of generalized Chebyshev polynomials. The new objective function is defined on a compact basic semi-algebraic set, so that we can benefit from the rich theory of polynomial optimization. We present an algorithm to compute the minimum: Based on the Hol-Scherer Positivstellensatz, we impose matrix-sums of squares conditions on the objective function in the Chebyshev basis. The degree of the sums of squares is weighted, defined by the root system. Increasing the degree yields a converging Lasserre-type hierarchy of lower bounds. This builds a bridge between trigonometric and polynomial optimization, allowing us to compare with existing techniques. The chromatic number of a set avoiding graph in the Euclidean space is defined through an optimal coloring. It can be computed via a spectral bound by minimizing a trigonometric polynomial. If the to be avoided set has crystallographic symmetry, our method has a natural application.Specifically, we compute spectral bounds for the first time for boundaries of symmetric polytopes. For several cases, the problem has such a simplified form that we can give analytical proofs for sharp spectral bounds. In other cases, we certify the sharpness numerically.

Some notes on a Fibonacci-Lucas identity
In 2016, Edgar and, independently of him, Bhatnagar sta\-ted a nice polynomial identity that connects Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. Shortly after their publications, this identity has been generalized in two different ways: Dafnis, Phillipou and Livieris provided a generalization to Fibonacci sequences of order $k$ and Abd-Elhameed and Zeyada extended Edgar--Bhatnagar identity to generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. In this paper, we present more polynomial identities for generalized Lucas sequences. We discuss interesting aspects and special cases which have not been stated before but deserve recognition. Finally, we prove the polynomial analogues of these identities for Chebyshev polynomials.

Proof of a conjecture on the determinant of walk matrix of rooted product with a path
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra,2024,72(5) • View PublicationBIB
The walk matrix of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$, denoted by $W(G)$, is $[e,Ae,\ldots,A^{n-1}e]$, where $e$ is the all-ones vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the rooted product of $G$ and a rooted path $P_m$ (taking an endvertex as the root), i.e., $G\circ P_m$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of $P_m$ by identifying each vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of a copy of $P_m$. Mao-Liu-Wang (2015) and Mao-Wang (2022) proved that, for $m=2$ and $m\in\{3,4\}$, respectively$$\det W(G\circ P_m)=\pm a_0^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m,$$ where $a_0$ is the constant term of the characteristic polynomial of $G$. Furthermore, Mao-Wang (2022) conjectured that the formula holds for any $m\ge 2$. In this note, we verify this conjecture using the technique of Chebyshev polynomials.

Recurrences for the derivative polynomials for tangent and secant
In this paper, we choose the derivative polynomials for tangent and secant as basis sets of polynomial space. From this viewpoint, we first give an expansion of the derivative polynomials for tangent in terms of the derivative polynomials for secant, and we then present a result in the reverse direction. We also discuss the relationships between alternating derivative polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. As applications, we give certain expansions of the alternating derivative polynomials, which indicate that the alternating derivative polynomials share more properties with the Chebyshev polynomials.

Combinatorial identities associated with a bivariate generating function for overpartition pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a three-parameter $q$-series identity that generalizes two results of Chan and Mao. By specializing our identity, we derive new results of combinatorial significance in connection with $N(r, s, m, n)$, a function counting certain overpartition pairs recently introduced by Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn. For example, one of our identities gives a closed-form evaluation of a double series in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, thereby resulting in an analogue of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Another of our results expresses a multi-sum involving $N(r, s, m, n)$ in terms of just the partition function $p(n)$. Using a result of Shimura we also relate a certain double series with a weight 7/2 theta series.

Proving some conjectures on Kekulé numbers for certain benzenoids by using Chebyshev polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In chemistry, Cyvin-Gutman enumerates Kekulé numbers for certain benzenoids and record it as $A050446$ on OEIS. This number is exactly the two variable array $T(n,m)$ defined by the recursion $T(n, m) = T(n, m-1) + \sum^{\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor}_{k=0} T(2k, m-1)T(n-1-2k, m)$, where $T(n,0)=T(0,m)=1$ for all nonnegative integers $m,n$. Interestingly, this number also appeared in the context of weighted graphs, graph polytopes, magic labellings, and unit primitive matrices, studied by different authors. Several interesting conjectures were made on the OEIS. These conjectures are related to both the row and column generating function of $T(n,m)$. In this paper, give explicit formula of the column generating function, which is also the generating function $F(n,x)$ studied by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. We also get trig function representations by using Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. This allows us to prove all these conjectures.
