Effective Resistances, Kirchhoff index and Admissible Invariants of Ladder Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explicitly compute the effective resistances between any two vertices of a ladder graph by using circuit reductions. Using our findings, we obtain explicit formulas for Kirchhoff index and admissible invariants of a ladder graph considering it as a model of a metrized graph. Comparing our formula for Kirchhoff index and previous results in literature, we obtain an explicit sum formula involving trigonometric functions. We also expressed our formulas in terms of certain generalized Fibonacci numbers that are the values of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind at $2$.
Demazure Flags, Chebyshev polynomials, Partial and Mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the level $m$--Demazure flag of a level $\ell$--Demazure module for $\frak{sl}_2[t]$. We define the generating series $A_n^{\ell \rightarrow m}(x,q)$ which encodes the $q$--multiplicity of the level $m$ Demazure module of weight $n$. We establish two recursive formulae for these functions. We show that the specialization to $q=1$ is a rational function involving the Chebyshev polynomials. We give a closed form for $A_n^{\ell \rightarrow \ell+1}(x,q)$ and prove that it is given by a rational function. In the case when $m=\ell+1$ and $\ell=1,2$, we relate the generating series to partial theta series. We also study the specializations $A_n^{1\rightarrow 3}(q^k,q)$ and relate them to the fifth order mock-theta functions of Ramanujan.
Log-concavity of the genus polynomials of Ringel ladders
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Ringel ladder can be formed by a self-bar-amalgamation operation on a symmetric ladder, that is, by joining the root vertices on its end-rungs. The present authors have previously derived criteria under which linear chains of copies of one or more graphs have log-concave genus polynomials. Herein we establish Ringel ladders as the first significant non-linear infinite family of graphs known to have log-concave genus polynomials. We construct an algebraic representation of self-bar-amalgamation as a matrix operation, to be applied to a vector representation of the partitioned genus distribution of a symmetric ladder. Analysis of the resulting genus polynomial involves the use of Chebyshev polynomials. This paper continues our quest to affirm the quarter-century-old conjecture that all graphs have log-concave genus polynomials.
Modified Nörlund polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The modified Bernoulli numbers $B_{n}^{*}$ considered by Zagier are generalized to modified Nörlund polynomials ${B_{n}^{(\ell)*}}$. For $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$, an explicit expression for the generating function for these polynomials is obtained. Evaluations of some spectacular integrals involving Chebyshev polynomials, and of a finite sum involving integrals of the Hurwitz zeta function are also obtained. New results about the $\ell$-fold convolution of the square hyperbolic secant distribution are obtained, such as a differential-difference equation satisfied by a logarithmic moment and a closed-form expression in terms of the Barnes zeta function.

Variations of the Poincaré series for affine Weyl groups and q-analogues of Chebyshev polynomials
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 82 (2017) 129-154 • View PublicationBIB
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and write $P_W(q)$ for its Poincaré series. Lusztig has shown that the quotient $P_W(q^2)/P_W(q)$ is equal to a certain power series $L_{W}(q)$, defined by specializing one variable in the generating function recording the lengths and absolute lengths of the involutions in $W$. The simplest inductive method of proving this result for finite Coxeter groups suggests a natural bivariate generalization $L^J_W(s,q) \in \mathbb{Z}[[s,q]]$ depending on a subset $J\subset S$. This new power series specializes to $L_W(q)$ when $s=-1$ and is given explicitly by a sum of rational functions over the involutions which are minimal length representatives of the double cosets of the parabolic subgroup $W_J$ in $W$. When $ W$ is an affine Weyl group, we consider the renormalized power series $T_{ W}(s,q) = L^J_W(s,q) / L_W(q)$ with $J$ given by the generating set of the corresponding finite Weyl group. We show that when $W$ is an affine Weyl group of type $A$, the power series $T_W(s,q)$ is actually a polynomial in $s$ and $q$ with nonnegative coefficients, which turns out to be a $q$-analogue recently studied by Cigler of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, arising in a completely different context.

Symmetric 1-Dependent Colorings of the Integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper by the same authors, we constructed a stationary 1-dependent 4-coloring of the integers that is invariant under permutations of the colors. This was the first stationary k-dependent q-coloring for any k and q. When the analogous construction is carried out for q>4 colors, the resulting process is not k-dependent for any k. We construct here a process that is symmetric in the colors and 1-dependent for every q>=4. The construction uses a recursion involving Chebyshev polynomials evaluated at $\sqrt{q}/2$.

Chebyshev Polynomials and Statistics on a New Collection of Words in the Catalan Family
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a new class of words, denoted by L_n, was shown to be in bijection with a subset of the Dyck paths of length 2n having cardinality given by the (n-1)-st Catalan number. Here, we consider statistics on L_n recording the number of occurrences of a letter i. In the cases i = 0 and i = 1, we are able to determine explicit expressions for the number of members of L_n containing a given number of zeros or ones, which generalizes the prior result. To do so, we make use of recurrences to derive a functional equation satisfied by the generating function, which we solve by a new method employing Chebyshev polynomials. Recurrences and generating function formulas are also provided in the case of general i.
Sandpiles and Dominos
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the subgroup of the abelian sandpile group of the grid graph consisting of configurations of sand that are symmetric with respect to central vertical and horizontal axes. We show that the size of this group is (i) the number of domino tilings of a corresponding weighted rectangular checkerboard; (ii) a product of special values of Chebyshev polynomials; and (iii) a double-product whose factors are sums of squares of values of trigonometric functions. We provide a new derivation of the formula due to Kasteleyn and to Temperley and Fisher for counting the number of domino tilings of a 2m x 2n rectangular checkerboard and a new way of counting the number of domino tilings of a 2m x 2n checkerboard on a Möbius strip.

Some remarks about q-Chebyshev polynomials and q-Catalan numbers and related results
The moments of the Lucas polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind are (multiples of) central binomial coefficients and the moments of the Fibonacci polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind are Catalan numbers. In this survey paper we present some generalizations of these results together with various q-analogues.
Counting subwords in flattened permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the number of occurrences of descents, ascents, 123-subwords, 321-subwords, peaks and valleys in flattened permutations, which were recently introduced by Callan in his study of finite set partitions. For descents and ascents, we make use of the kernel method and obtain an explicit formula (in terms of Eulerian polynomials) for the distribution on $\mathcal{S}_n$ in the flattened sense. For the other four patterns in question, we develop a unified approach to obtain explicit formulas for the comparable distributions. We find that the formulas so obtained for 123- and 321-subwords can be expressed in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, while those for peaks and valleys are more related to the Eulerian polynomials. We also provide a bijection showing the equidistribution of descents in flattened permutations of a given length with big descents in permutations of the same length in the usual sense.

On $γ$-vectors and the derivatives of the tangent and secant functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the gamma-vectors of the types A and B Coxeter complexes as well as the gamma-vectors of the types A and B associahedrons. We show that these gamma-vectors can be obtained by using derivative polynomials of the tangent and secant functions. A grammatical description for these gamma-vectors is discussed. Moreover, we also present a grammatical description for the well known Legendre polynomials and Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds.

A Counting Function
We define a counting function that is related to the binomial coefficients. An explicit formula for this function is proved. In some particular cases, simpler explicit formuls are derived. We also derive a formula for the number of (0,1)-matrices, having a fixed number of 1's, and having no zero rows and zero columns. Further, we show that our function satisfies several recurrence relations. The relationship of our counting function with different classes of integers is then examined. These classes include: different kind of figurate numbers, the number of points on the surface of a square pyramid, the magic constants, the truncated square numbers, the coefficients of the Chebyshev polynomials, the Catalan numbers, the Dellanoy numbers, the Sulanke numbers, the numbers of the coordination sequences, and the number of the crystal ball sequences of a cubic lattice. In the last part of the paper, we prove that several configurations are counted by our function. Some of these are: the number of spanning subgraphs of the complete bipartite graph, the number of square containing in a square, the number of coloring's of points on a line, the number of divisors of some particular numbers, the number of all parts in the compositions of an integer, the numbers of the weak compositions of integers, and the number of particular lattice paths. We conclude by counting the number of possible moves of the rook, bishop, and queen on a chessboard. The most statements in the paper are provided by bijective proofs in terms of insets, which are defined in the paper. With this we want to show that different configurations may be counted by the same method.

Chebyshev polynomials, Zolotarev polynomials and plane trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polynomial with exactly two critical values is called a generalized Chebyshev polynomial. A polynomial with exactly three critical values is called a Zolotarev polynomial. Two Chebyshev polynomials $f$ and $g$ are called Z-homotopic, if there exists a family $p_α$, $α\in [0,1]$, where $p_0=f$, $p_1=g$ and $p_α$ is a Zolotarev polynomial, if $α\in (0,1)$. As each Chebyshev polynomial defines a plane tree (and vice versa), Z-homotopy can be defined for plane trees. In this work we prove some necessary geometric conditions for plane trees Z-homotopy, describe Z-homotopy for trees with 5 and 6 edges and study one interesting example in the class of trees with 7 edges.

Bipartition of graphs based on the normalized cut and spectral methods
In the first part of this paper, we survey results that are associated with three types of Laplacian matrices:difference, normalized, and signless. We derive eigenvalue and eigenvector formulaes for paths and cycles using circulant matrices and present an alternative proof for finding eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of paths and cycles using Chebyshev polynomials. Even though each results is separately well known, we unite them, and provide uniform proofs in a simple manner. The main objective of this study is to solve the problem of finding graphs, on which spectral clustering methods and normalized cuts produce different partitions. First, we derive a formula for a minimum normalized cut for graph classes such as paths, cycles, complete graphs, double-trees, cycle cross paths, and some complex graphs like lollipop graph $LP_{n,m}$, roach type graph $R_{n,k}$, and weighted path $P_{n,k}$. Next, we provide characteristic polynomials of the normalized Laplacian matrices ${\mathcal L}(P_{n,k})$ and ${\mathcal L}(R_{n,k})$. Then, we present counter example graphs based on $R_{n,k}$, on which spectral methods and normalized cuts produce different clusters.

A characterization of ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the only orthogonal polynomials with a generating function of the form $F(x z - αz^2)$ are the ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. For special $F$ for which this is the case, we then finish the classification of orthogonal polynomials with more general generating functions $F(x w(z) - R(z))$.

On the enumeration of three-rowed standard Young tableaux of skew shape in terms of Motzkin numbers
The enumeration of standard Young tableaux (SYTs) of shape λ can be easily computed by the hook-length formula. In 1981, Amitai Regev proved that the number of SYTs having at most three rows with n entries equals the nth Motzkin number M_n. In 2006, Regev conjectured that the total number of SYTs of skew shape λ/(2, 1) over all partitions λ having at most three parts with n entries is the difference of two Motzkin numbers, M_{n-1} - M_{n-3}. Ekhad and Zeilberger proved Regev's conjecture using a computer program. In 2009, S.-P. Eu found a bijection between Motzkin paths and SYTs of skew shape with at most three rows to prove Regev's conjecture, and Eu also indirectly showed that for the fixed μ = (μ1,μ2) the number of SYTs of skew shape λ/μ over all partitions λ having at most three parts can be expressed as a linear combination of the Motzkin numbers. In this paper, we will find an explicit formula for the generating function for the general case: for each partition μ having at most three parts the generating function gives a formula for the coefficients of the linear combination of Motzkin numbers. We will also show that these generating functions are unexpectedly related to the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Motzkin Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an associative algebra $\M_k(x)$ whose dimension is the $2k$-th Motzkin number. The algebra $\M_k(x)$ has a basis of "Motzkin diagrams," which are analogous to Brauer and Temperley-Lieb diagrams, and it contains the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\TL_k(x)$ as a subalgebra. We prove that for a particular value of $x$, the algebra $\M_k(x)$ is the centralizer algebra of $\uqsl$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor power of the sum of the 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional irreducible $\uqsl$-modules. We show that $\M_k(x)$ is generated by special diagrams $\ell_i, t_i, r_i \ (1 \le i < k)$ and $p_j \ (1 \le j \le k)$, and that it has a factorization into three subalgebras $\M_k(x) = \RP_k \TL_k(x)\, \LP_k$, all of which have dimensions given by Catalan numbers. We define an action of $\M_k(x)$ on Motzkin paths of rank $r$, and in this way, construct a set of indecomposable modules $\C_k^{(r)}$, $0 \le r \le k$. We prove that $\M_k(x)$ is cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer and that the $\C_k^{(r)}$ are the left cell representations. We compute the determinant of the Gram matrix of a bilinear form on $\C_k^{(r)}$ for each $r$ and use these determinants to show that $\M_k(x)$ is semisimple exactly when $x$ is not the root of certain Chebyshev polynomials.

Walks on Free Groups and other Stories -- twelve years later
Published in Illinois Journal of Mathematics vol 54 (Spring 2010), pp 327-370 • View PublicationBIB
We start by studying the distribution of (cyclically reduced) elements of the free groups Fn with respect to their abelianization (or equivalently, their integer homology class. We derive an explicit generating function, and a limiting distribution, by means of certain results (of independent interest) on Chebyshev polynomials; we also prove that the reductions modulo an arbitrary prime of these classes are asymptotically equidistributed, and we study the deviation from equidistribution. We extend our techniques to a more general setting and use them to study the statistical properties of long cycles (and paths) on regular (directed and undirected) graphs. We return to the free group to study some growth functions of the number of conjugacy classes as a function of their cyclically reduced length.
