Combinatorics in 1-semi-equational theories
We give direct combinatorial proofs that 1-semi-equational theories satisfy two combinatorial properties that imply the non-interpretability of certain fields. Our main result is that Boolean combinations of 1-semi-equations have almost linear Zarankiewicz bounds, and hence no infinite field is interpretable in a 1-semi-equational theory; this answers a question of Chernikov--Mennen and Chernikov--Starchenko, who had respectively established almost linear Zarankiewicz bounds for Boolean combinations of $(2,1)$-semi-equations and Boolean combinations of weakly normal relations. (This was recently and independently established by Gou, Mirabi, Mittal, Tran, and Yang, using different techniques and producing different bounds.) We also show that $(k,1)$-semi-equations satisfy the $δ$-strong Erdős--Hajnal property with $δ=1/6^{k-1}$; this had previously been established by Chernikov--Starchenko for an ineffective constant $δ>0$.

A Single-Exponential Erdős--Hajnal Bound for Graphs of Bounded VC-Dimension
A homogeneous set in a graph is a clique or a stable set. The Erdős--Hajnal conjecture states that, for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices has a homogeneous set of size at least $n^c$. Nguyen, Scott and Seymour proved that for every $d>0$, graphs of VC-dimension at most $d$ have the Erdős--Hajnal property, confirming a conjecture of Fox, Pach and Suk. In particular, they showed that every such $n$-vertex graph contains a homogeneous set of size at least $n^{η_d}$ for some $η_d\ge 2^{-2^{O(d)}}$. In this paper, we give a sharper quantitative bound on the homogeneous sets in graphs of VC-dimension at most $d$, showing that one may take $ η_d\ge (Cd)^{-d}, $ where $C$ is an absolute constant. Equivalently, every graph $G$ of VC-dimension at most $d$ satisfies \[ \max\{ω(G),α(G)\}\ge |G|^{(Cd)^{-d}}. \] Our proof refines the iterative sparsification method of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour. The main enhancement is to apply the VC-dimension assumption directly, which gives a more efficient induction and thus improves the dependence on $d$. We also derive quantitative consequences for polynomial Rödl subgraphs, hypergraph Ramsey bounds under bounded VC-dimension, induced-free and viral formulations, tournaments, NIP and semi-algebraic graphs, Boolean combinations of relations of bounded VC-dimension, graphs whose adjacency matrices have bounded rank, graphs of bounded sign-rank, and graphs defined by dot-product threshold representations.

On possible uniform Turán densities
Given a family of $3$-graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the uniform Turán density $π_{\therefore}(\mathcal{F})$ is defined as the infimum $d\in[0,1]$ for which any sufficiently large uniformly $d$-dense $3$-graph - that is, a $3$-graph which has edge-density at least $d$ on all linearly sized subsets - contains a copy of some $F \in \mathcal{F}$. Let $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ denote the set of all possible uniform Turán densities of finite families. Erdős, Hajnal, and Rödl introduced a family of constructions for lower bounds on uniform Turán densities called palette constructions. We show that $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ contains every $d$ that is obtained as the uniform density of an optimized palette construction. A corollary of this is that $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ contains the set of Lagrangians of $3$-graphs and includes irrational numbers. Our work complements a recent result of Lamaison, which states that every value in $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ can be approximated by uniform densities of palette constructions.

The saturation number of W 4
For a fixed graph $H$, a graph $G$ is called $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $H$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph, but $G+e$ contains a copy of $H$ for any $e\in E(\overline{G})$. The saturation number of $H$, denoted by ${\rm sat}(n,H)$, is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-saturated graph. A wheel $W_n$ is a graph obtained from a cycle of length $n$ by adding a new vertex and joining it to every vertex of the cycle. A well-known result of Erdős, Hajnal and Moon shows that ${\rm sat}(n,W_3)=2n-3$ for all $n\geq 4$ and $K_2\vee \overline{K_{n-2}}$ is the unique extremal graph, where $\vee$ denotes the graph join operation. In this paper, we study the saturation number of $W_4$. We prove that ${\rm sat}(n,W_4)=\lfloor\frac{5n-10}{2}\rfloor$ for all $n\geq 6$ and give a complete characterization of the extremal graphs.

Twin-free $K_r$-saturated Graphs and Maximally Independent Sets in $K_3$-free Graphs
We say that two vertices are twins if they have the same neighbourhood and that a graph is $K_r$-saturated if it does not contain $K_r$ but adding any new edge to it creates a $K_r$. In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon showed that $sat(n,K_r)=(r-2)n+o(n)$ for $r \geq 3$, where $sat(n,K_r)$ is the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices, and determined the unique extremal graph. This graph has many twins, leading us to define $tsat(n,K_r)$ to be the minimum number of edges in a twin-free $K_r$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. We show that $(5 +2/3)n + o(n) \leq tsat(n,K_3) \leq 6n+o(n)$ and that $\left(r+2\right)n + o(n) \leq tsat(n,K_r) \leq (r+3)n+o(n)$ for $r \geq 4$. We also consider a variant of this problem where we additionally require the graphs to have large minimum degree. Both of these problems turn out be intimately related to two other problems regarding maximally independent sets of a given size in $K_3$-free graphs and generalisations of these problems to $K_r$ with $r \geq 4$. The first problem is to maximise the number of maximally independent sets given the number of vertices and the second problem is to minimise the number of edges given the number of maximally independent sets. They are interesting in their own right.

Multilevel polynomial partitioning and semialgebraic hypergraphs: regularity, Turán, and Zarankiewicz results
We prove three main results about semialgebraic hypergraphs. First, we prove an optimal and oblivious regularity lemma. Fox, Pach, and Suk proved that the class of $k$-uniform semialgebraic hypergraphs satisfies a very strong regularity lemma where the vertex set can be partitioned into $\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)$ parts so that all but an $\varepsilon$-fraction of $k$-tuples of parts are homogeneous (either complete or empty). Our result improves the number of parts in the partition to $O_{d,k}((D/\varepsilon)^{d})$ where $d$ is the dimension of the ambient space and $D$ is a measure of the complexity of the hypergraph; additionally, the partition is oblivious to the edge set of the hypergraph. We give examples that show that the dependence on both $\varepsilon$ and $D$ is optimal. From this regularity lemma we deduce the best-known Turán-type result for semialgebraic hypergraphs. Third, we prove a Zarankiewicz-type result for semialgebraic hypergraphs. Previously Fox, Pach, Sheffer, Suk, and Zahl showed that a $K_{u,u}$-free semialgebraic graph on $N$ vertices has at most $O_{d,D,u}(N^{2d/(d+1)+o(1)})$ edges and Do extended this result to $K_{u,\ldots,u}^{(k)}$-free semialgebraic hypergraphs. We improve upon both of these results by removing the $o(1)$ in the exponent and making the dependence on $D$ and $u$ explicit and polynomial. All three of these results follow from a novel ``multilevel polynomial partitioning scheme'' that efficiently partitions a point set $P\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ via low-complexity semialgebraic pieces. We prove this result using the polynomial method over varieties as developed by Walsh which extends the real polynomial partitioning technique of Guth and Katz. We give additional applications to the unit distance problem, the Erdős--Hajnal problem for semialgebraic graphs, and property testing of semialgebraic hypergraphs.

A lower bound on the saturation number and a strengthening for triangle-free graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 32(3) (2025), #P3.14 • View PublicationBIB
The saturation number $\operatorname{sat}(n, H)$ of a graph $H$ and positive integer $n$ is the minimum size of a graph of order $n$ which does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ but to which the addition of any edge creates such a subgraph. Erdős, Hajnal, and Moon first studied saturation numbers of complete graphs, and Cameron and Puleo introduced a general lower bound on $\operatorname{sat}(n,H)$. In this paper, we present another lower bound on $\operatorname{sat}(n, H)$ with strengthenings for graphs $H$ in several classes, all of which include the class of triangle-free graphs. Demonstrating its effectiveness, we determine the saturation numbers of diameter-$3$ trees up to an additive constant; these are double stars $S_{s,t}$ of order $s + t$ whose central vertices have degrees $s$ and $t$. Faudree, Faudree, Gould, and Jacobson determined that $\operatorname{sat}(n, S_{t,t}) = (t-1)n/2 + O(1)$. We prove that $\operatorname{sat}(n,S_{s,t}) = (st+s)n/(2t+4) + O(1)$ when $s < t$. We also apply our lower bound to caterpillars and demonstrate an upper bound on the saturation numbers of certain diameter-$4$ caterpillars.

Two Ramsey-Turán numbers involving triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given integers $p, q\ge2$, we say that a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. Fix a function $f( n )$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,f( n ))} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $f( n )$. For any $δ>0$, let $ρ(p, q,δ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,δn)}{n^2}$. We always call $ρ(p, q):= \mathop {\lim }\limits_{δ\to 0}ρ(p, q,δ)$ the Ramsey-Turán density of $K_p$ and $K_q$. In 1993, Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós and Szemerédi proposed to determine the value of $ρ(3,q)$ for $q\ge3$, and they conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ\left( {3,2q - 1} \right) = \frac{1}{2}(1 - \frac{1}{r(3,q) - 1})$. Recently, Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ( {3,2q } ) = \frac{1}{2}( 1 - \frac{1}{r( {3,q} )})$. Erdős et al. (1993) determined $ρ(3,q)$ for $q=3,4,5$ and $ρ(4,4)$. There is no progress on the Ramsey-Turán density $ρ(p, q)$ in the past thirty years. In this paper, we obtain $ρ(3,6)=\frac{5}{12}$ and $ρ(3,7)=\frac{7}{16}$. Moreover, we show that the corresponding asymptotically extremal structures are weakly stable, which answers a problem of Erdős et al. (1993) for the two cases.
A lower bound for set-colouring Ramsey numbers
The set-colouring Ramsey number $R_{r,s}(k)$ is defined to be the minimum $n$ such that if each edge of the complete graph $K_n$ is assigned a set of $s$ colours from $\{1,\ldots,r\}$, then one of the colours contains a monochromatic clique of size $k$. The case $s = 1$ is the usual $r$-colour Ramsey number, and the case $s = r - 1$ was studied by Erdős, Hajnal and Rado in 1965, and by Erdős and Szemerédi in 1972. The first significant results for general $s$ were obtained only recently, by Conlon, Fox, He, Mubayi, Suk and Verstraëte, who showed that $R_{r,s}(k) = 2^{Θ(kr)}$ if $s/r$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. In the range $s = r - o(r)$, however, their upper and lower bounds diverge significantly. In this note we introduce a new (random) colouring, and use it to determine $R_{r,s}(k)$ up to polylogarithmic factors in the exponent for essentially all $r$, $s$ and $k$.

Weak randomness in graphons and theons

Call a hereditary family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs strongly persistent if there exists a graphon $W$ such that in all subgraphons $W'$ of $W$, $\mathcal{F}$ is precisely the class of finite graphs that have positive density in $W'$. Our first result is a complete characterization of the hereditary families of graphs that are strongly persistent as precisely those that are closed under substitutions. We call graphons with the self-similarity property above weakly random. A hereditary family $\mathcal{F}$ is said to have the weakly random Erdős--Hajnal property (WR) if every graphon that is a limit of graphs in $\mathcal{F}$ has a weakly random subgraphon. Among families of graphs that are closed under substitutions, we completely characterize the families that belong to WR as those with "few" prime graphs. We also extend some of the results above to structures in finite relational languages by using the theory of theons.
Tower Gaps in Multicolour Ramsey Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Resolving a problem of Conlon, Fox, and Rödl, we construct a family of hypergraphs with arbitrarily large tower height separation between their $2$-colour and $q$-colour Ramsey numbers. The main lemma underlying this construction is a new variant of the Erdős--Hajnal stepping-up lemma for a generalized Ramsey number $r_k(t;q,p)$, which we define as the smallest integer $n$ such that every $q$-colouring of the $k$-sets on $n$ vertices contains a set of $t$ vertices spanning fewer than $p$ colours. Our results provide the first tower-type lower bounds on these numbers.

Covering random graphs with monochromatic trees
Given an $r$-edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$, how many monochromatic connected components does one need in order to cover its vertex set? This natural question is a well-known essentially equivalent formulation of the classical Ryser's conjecture which, despite a lot of attention over the last 50 years, still remains open. A number of recent papers consider a sparse random analogue of this question, asking for the minimum number of monochromatic components needed to cover the vertex set of an $r$-edge-coloured random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$. Recently, Bucić, Korándi and Sudakov established a connection between this problem and a certain Helly-type local to global question for hypergraphs raised about 30 years ago by Erdős, Hajnal and Tuza. We identify a modified version of the hypergraph problem which controls the answer to the problem of covering random graphs with monochromatic components more precisely. To showcase the power of our approach, we essentially resolve the $3$-colour case by showing that $(\log n / n)^{1/4}$ is a threshold at which point three monochromatic components are needed to cover all vertices of a $3$-edge-coloured random graph, answering a question posed by Kohayakawa, Mendonça, Mota and Schülke. Our approach also allows us to determine the answer in the general $r$-edge coloured instance of the problem, up to lower order terms, around the point when it first becomes bounded, answering a question of Bucić, Korándi and Sudakov.

Independent sets in subgraphs of a shift graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Erdős, Hajnal and Szemerédi proved that any subset $G$ of vertices of a shift graph $\text{Sh}_{n}^{k}$ has the property that the independence number of the subgraph induced by $G$ satisfies $α(\text{Sh}_{n}^{k}[G])\geq \left(\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon\right)|G|$, where $\varepsilon\to 0$ as $k\to \infty$. In this note we prove that for $k=2$ and $n \to \infty$ there are graphs $G\subseteq \binom{[n]}{2}$ with $α(\text{Sh}_{n}^{2}[G])\leq \left(\frac{1}{4}+o(1)\right)|G|$, and $\frac{1}{4}$ is best possible. We also consider a related problem for infinite shift graphs.

The (t-1)-chromatic Ramsey number for paths
The following relaxation of the classical problem of determining Ramsey number of a fixed graph has first been proposed by Erdos, Hajnal and Rado over 50 years ago. Given a graph $G$ and an integer $t \geq 2$ determine the minimum number $N$ such that in any $t$-coloured complete graph on $N$ vertices there is a copy of $G$ using only edges of some $t-1$ colours. We determine the answer precisely when $G$ is a path.
Edge-Minimum Saturated k-Planar Drawings
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a class $\mathcal{D}$ of drawings of loopless (multi-)graphs in the plane, a drawing $D \in \mathcal{D}$ is \emph{saturated} when the addition of any edge to $D$ results in $D' \notin \mathcal{D}$ - this is analogous to saturated graphs in a graph class as introduced by Turán (1941) and Erdős, Hajnal, and Moon (1964). We focus on $k$-planar drawings, that is, graphs drawn in the plane where each edge is crossed at most $k$ times, and the classes $\mathcal{D}$ of all $k$-planar drawings obeying a number of restrictions, such as having no crossing incident edges, no pair of edges crossing more than once, or no edge crossing itself. While saturated $k$-planar drawings are the focus of several prior works, tight bounds on how sparse these can be are not well understood. We establish a generic framework to determine the minimum number of edges among all $n$-vertex saturated $k$-planar drawings in many natural classes. For example, when incident crossings, multicrossings and selfcrossings are all allowed, the sparsest $n$-vertex saturated $k$-planar drawings have $\frac{2}{k - (k \bmod 2)} (n-1)$ edges for any $k \geq 4$, while if all that is forbidden, the sparsest such drawings have $\frac{2(k+1)}{k(k-1)}(n-1)$ edges for any $k \geq 6$.

Spectral strengthening of a theorem on transversal critical graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 345 (2022), 112717 • View PublicationBIB
A transversal set of a graph $G$ is a set of vertices incident to all edges of $G$. The transversal number of $G$, denoted by $τ(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a transversal set of $G$. A simple graph $G$ with no isolated vertex is called $τ$-critical if $τ(G-e) < τ(G)$ for every edge $e\in E(G)$. For any $τ$-critical graph $G$ with $τ(G)=t$, it has been shown that $|V(G)|\le 2t$ by Erdős and Gallai and that $|E(G)|\le {t+1\choose 2}$ by Erdős, Hajnal and Moon. Most recently, it was extended by Gyárfás and Lehel to $|V(G)| + |E(G)|\le {t+2\choose 2}$. In this paper, we prove stronger results via spectrum. Let $G$ be a $τ$-critical graph with $τ(G)=t$ and $|V(G)|=n$, and let $λ_1$ denote the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. We show that $n + λ_1\le 2t+1$ with equality if and only if $G$ is $tK_2$, $K_{s+1}\cup (t-s)K_2$, or $C_{2s-1}\cup (t-s)K_2$, where $2\leq s\leq t$; and in particular, $λ_1(G)\le t$ with equality if and only if $G$ is $K_{t+1}$. We then apply it to show that for any nonnegative integer $r$, we have $n\left(r+ \frac{λ_1}{2}\right) \le {t+r+1\choose 2}$ and characterize all extremal graphs. This implies a pure combinatorial result that $r|V(G)| + |E(G)| \le {t+r+1\choose 2}$, which is stronger than Erdős-Hajnal-Moon Theorem and Gyárfás-Lehel Theorem. We also have some other generalizations.
Saturation problems in the Ramsey theory of graphs, posets and point sets
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the family to have the forbidden configuration, but insist that any addition to the family yields a new copy of the forbidden configuration. In this setting, we prove a semisaturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem on convex $k$-gons, as well as multiple semisaturation theorems for sequences and posets.

Order plus size of $τ$-critical graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a $τ$-critical graph with $τ(G)=t$. Erdős and Gallai proved that $|V|\leq 2t$ and the bound $|E|\leq {t+1\choose 2}$ was obtained by Erdős, Hajnal and Moon. We give here the sharp combined bound $|E|+|V|\leq {t+2\choose 2}$ and find all graphs with equality.

On some generalizations of the property $B$-problem of an $n$-uniform hypergraph
The extremal problem of hypergraph colorings related to Erdős--Hajnal property $B$-problem is considered. Let $k$ be a natural number. The problem is to find the value of $m_k(n)$ equal to the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph not admitting $2$-colorings of the vertex set such that every edge of the hypergraph contains at least $k$ vertices of each color. In this paper we obtain new lower bounds for $m_k(n).$

On the growth rate of chromatic numbers of finite subgraphs
We prove that, for every function $f:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$, there is a graph $G$ with uncountable chromatic number such that, for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$ with $k \geq 3$, every subgraph of $G$ with fewer than $f(k)$ vertices has chromatic number less than $k$. This answers a question of Erdős, Hajnal, and Szemeredi.
