Ramsey-Turán Anti-Directed Cycle Factors in Oriented Graphs
Let $C_{2s}^{\mathrm{ad}}$ be the anti-directed cycle of length $2s$, where $s\geq2$. We prove that, for every $μ>0$, every sufficiently large $n$-vertex oriented graph $D$ with $2s\mid n$, \[ δ^0(D)\geq\left(\frac14+μ\right)n \qquad\text{and}\qquad α(D)=o(n) \] contains a $C_{2s}^{\mathrm{ad}}$-factor. The minimum semidegree threshold is asymptotically tight. The proof develops Ramsey--Turán-type lattice-absorption lemmas with a transferral arising from the small-independence condition by virtue of a fork-type structure.

Bipartite cuts in Ramsey-Turán style
We prove that every $K_5$-free $n$-vertex graph with sublinear independence number can be made bipartite by removing at most $n^2(1/18+o(1))$ edges, where the constant $1/18$ is best possible. The proof method is related to extensions of Turán Theorem in edge-weighted settings, and part of the proof uses flag algebra.

Ramsey-Turán Type Problem for Perfect Transitive Triangle Tilings in Digraphs
The classical Corrádi-Hajnal theorem states that for any multiple $n$ of $3$, if $G$ is a graph with $n$ vertices and $δ(G) \geq 2n/3$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/3$ vertex-disjoint copies of the triangle [\emph{Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung.}, 14:423-439, 1964]. Balogh, Molla and Sharifzadeh obtained a smaller lower bound by adding the independence number condition [\emph{Random Struct. Algorithms}, 49:669-693, 2016]. In this paper, we study perfect tilings in digraphs subject to conditions on the independence number and the degree. The independence number, $α(D)$, of $D$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $D$ has an independent set of cardinality $k$. We show that if $D$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with $α(D)\leq o(1)n$ and $δ(D) \geq (1+o(1))n$, then $D$ has a perfect $T_3$-tiling, where $T_3$ denotes a transitive triangle. This minimum degree condition is asymptotically best possible. Moreover, our result implies the theorem of Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh concerning perfect triangle tilings.

Ramsey-Turán theory for partially-ordered sets
We introduce weak and strong poset Ramsey-Turán numbers for $t$-chains in host poset families, focusing on the Boolean lattice family $\mathcal{B}=\{B_n:n\ge 1\}$. For any poset $P$, we show $\operatorname{RT}(\mathcal{B};n,P,l,t)\le \operatorname{RT}^{\sharp}(\mathcal{B};n,P,l,t)$, with equality when $P$ is a chain. In particular, for $t=1$, $\operatorname{RT}(\mathcal{B};n,C_k,l)=\operatorname{RT}^{\sharp}(\mathcal{B};n,C_k,l)=(k-1)(l-1)$. We also give universal upper bounds for both versions. For fixed $k,l,t$ with $\min\{l-1,k-1\}\ge 1$, we prove $\operatorname{RT}^{\sharp}(\mathcal{B};n,A_k,l,t)=Θ(n^t)$. More generally, for every non-chain poset $P$, the strong number is $Θ(n^t)$ for fixed $l,t$. Finally, if $h(P)=r>t$ and $l(n)=\lfloor M_n^β\rfloor$ with $0<β\le α<1$, then both weak and strong versions admit lower bounds of order $Ω\!\left(2^{βn}n^{-β/2}\right)$.

A very robust Ramsey theorem for matchings
Our main result is a robust generalisation of the Cockayne-Lorimer theorem on the multicolour Ramsey number of matchings. It is moreover a generalisation of the transference generalisation of Cockayne-Lorimer, which (informally) says that the random graph $G \sim G(n,p)$ with $np \to \infty$ has, with high probability, essentially the same Ramsey matching properties as the complete graph $K_n$. We show, somewhat surprisingly, that the same is true under the rather weak robustness assumption that $G$ is an $s$-connector (i.e. $\overline{G}$ is $K_{s,s}$-free) with $s=o(n)$. Moreover, we show that such $G$ has only an additive $O(s)$ loss with respect to $K_n$ for monochromatic matchings, which is essentially sharp. Our proof adapts a compression algorithm based on Gallai-Edmonds decompositions that we developed previously for generalised Ramsey-Turán problems.

Ramsey with purple edges
Motivated by a question of Angell, we investigate a variant of Ramsey numbers where some edges are coloured simultaneously red and blue, which we call purple. Specifically, we are interested in the largest number $g=g(n;s,t)$, for some $s$ and $t$ and $n<R(s,t)$, such that there exists a red/blue/purple colouring of $K_n$ with $g$ purple edges, with no red/purple copy of $K_s$ nor blue/purple copy of $K_t$. We determine $g$ asymptotically for a large family of parameters, exhibiting strong dependencies with Ramsey-Turán numbers.

On the Ramsey-Turán problem for 4-cliques
We present an essentially tight bound for the Ramsey-Turán problem for 4-cliques without using the Regularity lemma. This enables us to substantially extend the range in which one has the tight bound for the number of edges in $K_4$-free graphs as a function of the independence number, apart from lower order terms.

Critical behaviors of the Ramsey-Turán number of $K_3$ and $K_6$
In 1969, Erdős and Sós initiated the study of the Ramsey-Turán type problems. Given integers $p, q\ge2$, a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. For any $δ>0$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,δn)} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $δn$. Let $ρ(p, q,δ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,δn)}{n^2}$. Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) showed $ρ(3,6,δ)\ge \frac{5}{12}+\fracδ{2}+2δ^2$ from a skilful construction and conjectured the equality holds for sufficiently small $δ>0$. We make the first step to the conjecture by showing that $ρ(3,6,δ)\le\frac{5}{12} + \frac{δ}{2}+ 2.1025δ^2$ for sufficiently small $δ>0$.
Strong Brandt-Thomassé Theorems
Solving a long standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits, Brandt and Thomassé proved that the chromatic number of each triangle-free graph $G$ such that $δ(G)>|V(G)|/3$ is at most four. In fact, they showed the much stronger result that every maximal triangle-free graph $G$ satisfying this minimum degree condition is a blow-up of either an Andrásfai or a Vega graph. Here we establish the same structural conclusion on $G$ under the weaker assumption that for $m\in\{2, 3, 4\}$ every sequence of $3m$ vertices has a subsequence of length $m+1$ with a common neighbour. In forthcoming work this will be used to solve an old problem of Andrásfai in Ramsey-Turán theory.

Generalized Ramsey-Turán Numbers
The Ramsey-Turán problem for $K_p$ asks for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $K_p$-free graph with independence number $o(n)$. In a natural generalization of the problem, cliques larger than the edge $K_2$ are counted. Let {\bf RT}$(n,\#K_q,K_p,o(n))$ denote the maximum number of copies of $K_q$ in an $n$-vertex $K_p$-free graph with independence number $o(n)$. Balogh, Liu and Sharifzadeh determined the asymptotics of {\bf RT}$(n,\# K_3,K_p,o(n))$. In this paper we will establish the asymptotics for counting copies of $K_4$, $K_5$, and for the case $p \geq 5q$. We also provide a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Balogh, Liu and Sharifzadeh.

On powers of Hamilton cycles in Ramsey-Turán Theory
We prove that for $r\in \mathbb{N}$ with $r\geq 2$ and $μ>0$, there exist $α>0$ and $n_{0}$ such that for every $n\geq n_{0}$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq \left(1-\frac{1}{r}+μ\right)n$ and $α(G)\leq αn$ contains an $r$-th power of a Hamilton cycle. We also show that the minimum degree condition is asymptotically sharp for $r=2, 3$ and the $r=2$ case was recently conjectured by Staden and Treglown.
Weighted Turán theorems with applications to Ramsey-Turán type of problems
We study extensions of Turán Theorem in edge-weighted settings. A particular case of interest is when constraints on the weight of an edge come from the order of the largest clique containing it. These problems are motivated by Ramsey-Turán type problems. Some of our proofs are based on the method of graph Lagrangians, while the other proofs use flag algebras. Using these results, we prove several new upper bounds on the Ramsey-Turán density of cliques. Other applications of our results are in a recent paper of Balogh, Chen, McCourt and Murley.

Two Ramsey-Turán numbers involving triangles

Given integers $p, q\ge2$, we say that a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. Fix a function $f( n )$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,f( n ))} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $f( n )$. For any $δ>0$, let $ρ(p, q,δ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,δn)}{n^2}$. We always call $ρ(p, q):= \mathop {\lim }\limits_{δ\to 0}ρ(p, q,δ)$ the Ramsey-Turán density of $K_p$ and $K_q$. In 1993, Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós and Szemerédi proposed to determine the value of $ρ(3,q)$ for $q\ge3$, and they conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ\left( {3,2q - 1} \right) = \frac{1}{2}(1 - \frac{1}{r(3,q) - 1})$. Recently, Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) conjectured that for $q \ge 2$, $ρ( {3,2q } ) = \frac{1}{2}( 1 - \frac{1}{r( {3,q} )})$. Erdős et al. (1993) determined $ρ(3,q)$ for $q=3,4,5$ and $ρ(4,4)$. There is no progress on the Ramsey-Turán density $ρ(p, q)$ in the past thirty years. In this paper, we obtain $ρ(3,6)=\frac{5}{12}$ and $ρ(3,7)=\frac{7}{16}$. Moreover, we show that the corresponding asymptotically extremal structures are weakly stable, which answers a problem of Erdős et al. (1993) for the two cases.

Ramsey-Turán Problems with small independence numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $H$ and a function $f(n)$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT(n,H,f(n))$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph with independence number at most $f(n)$. For $H$ being a small clique, many results about $RT(n,H,f(n))$ are known and we focus our attention on $H=K_s$ for $s\leq 13$. By applying Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, the dependent random choice method and some weighted Turán-type results, we prove that these cliques have the so-called phase transitions when $f(n)$ is around the inverse function of the off-diagonal Ramsey number of $K_r$ versus a large clique $K_n$ for some $r\leq s$.
A Ramsey-Turán theory for tilings in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a $k$-vertex graph $F$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$, an $F$-tiling in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $F$ in $G$. For $r\in \mathbb{N}$, the $r$-independence number of $G$, denoted $α_r(G)$ is the largest size of a $K_r$-free set of vertices in $G$. In this paper, we discuss Ramsey--Turán-type theorems for tilings where one is interested in minimum degree and independence number conditions (and the interaction between the two) that guarantee the existence of optimal $F$-tilings. For cliques, we show that for any $k\geq 3$ and $η>0$, any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G)\geq ηn$ and $α_k(G)=o(n)$ has a $K_k$-tiling covering all but $\lfloor\tfrac{1}η\rfloor(k-1)$ vertices. All conditions in this result are tight; the number of vertices left uncovered can not be improved and for $η<\tfrac{1}{k}$, a condition of $α_{k-1}(G)=o(n)$ would not suffice. When $η>\tfrac{1}{k}$, we then show that $α_{k-1}(G)=o(n)$ does suffice, but not $α_{k-2}(G)=o(n)$. These results unify and generalise previous results of Balogh-Molla-Sharifzadeh, Nenadov-Pehova and Balogh-McDowell-Molla-Mycroft on the subject. We further explore the picture when $F$ is a tree or a cycle and discuss the effect of replacing the independence number condition with $α^*(G)=o(n)$ (meaning that any pair of disjoint linear sized sets induce an edge between them) where one can force perfect $F$-tilings covering all the vertices. Finally we discuss the consequences of these results in the randomly perturbed setting.

Recursive constructions of amoebas
Published • View PublicationBIB
Global amoebas are a wide and rich family of graphs that emerged from the study of certain Ramsey-Turán problems in $2$-colorings of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ that deal with the appearance of unavoidable patterns once a certain amount of edges in each color is guaranteed. Indeed, it turns out that, as soon as such coloring constraints are satisfied and if $n$ is sufficiently large, then every global amoeba can be found embedded in $K_n$ such that it has half its edges in each color. Even more surprising, every bipartite global amoeba $G$ is unavoidable in every tonal-variation, meaning that, for any pair of integers $r, b$ such that $r + b $ is the number of edges of $G$, there is a subgraph of $K_n$ isomorphic to $G$ with $r$ edges in the first color and $b$ edges in the second. The feature that makes global amoebas work are one-by-one edge replacements that leave the structure of the graph invariant. By means of a group theoretical approach, the dynamics of this feature can be modeled. As a counterpart to the global amoebas that "live" inside a possibly large complete graph $K_n$, we also consider local amoebas which are spanning subgraphs of $K_n$ with the same feature. In an effort to highlight their richness and versatility, we present here three different recursive constructions of amoebas, two of them yielding interesting families per se and one of them offering a wide range of possibilities.
Geometric constructions for Ramsey-Turán theory

Combining two classical notions in extremal combinatorics, the study of Ramsey-Turán theory seeks to determine, for integers $m\le n$ and $p \leq q$, the number $\mathsf{RT}_p(n,K_q,m)$, which is the maximum size of an $n$-vertex $K_q$-free graph in which every set of at least $m$ vertices contains a $K_p$. Two major open problems in this area from the 80s ask: (1) whether the asymptotic extremal structure for the general case exhibits certain periodic behaviour, resembling that of the special case when $p=2$; (2) constructing analogues of Bollobás-Erdős graphs with densities other than $1/2$. We refute the first conjecture by witnessing asymptotic extremal structures that are drastically different from the $p=2$ case, and address the second problem by constructing Bollobás-Erdős-type graphs using high dimensional complex spheres with all rational densities. Some matching upper bounds are also provided.

Ramsey-Turán numbers for intersecting odd cliques
Given a graph $H$ and a function $f:\mathbb{Z}^+ \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+ $, the Ramsey-Turán number of $H$ and $f$, denoted by $RT(n, H, f(n))$, is the maximum number of edges a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can have, which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph and also does not contain a set of $f(n)$ independent vertices. Let $r$ be a positive integer. In 1969, Erdős and Sós proved that $RT(n,K_{2r+1},o(n))=\frac{n^2}{2}(1-\frac{1}{r})+o(n^2)$. Let $F_k(2r+1)$ denote the graph consisting of $k$ copies of complete graphs $K_{2r+1}$ sharing exactly one vertex. In this paper, we show that $RT(n,F_k(2r+1),o(n))=\frac{n^2}{2}(1-\frac{1}{r})+o(n^2)$, which is of the same magnitude with $RT(n, K_{2r+1}, o(n))$.

Graphs isomorphisms under edge-replacements and the family of amoebas
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper offers a systematic study of a family of graphs called amoebas. Amoebas recently emerged from the study of forced patterns in $2$-colorings of the edges of the complete graph in the context of Ramsey-Turan theory and played an important role in extremal zero-sum problems. Amoebas are graphs with a unique behavior with regards to the following operation: Let $G$ be a graph and let $e\in E(G)$ and $e'\in E(\overline{G})$. If the graph $G'=G-e+e'$ is isomorphic to $G$, we say $G'$ is obtained from $G$ by performing a \emph{feasible edge-replacement}. We call $G$ a \emph{local amoeba} if, for any two copies $G_1$, $G_2$ of $G$ on the same vertex set, $G_1$ can be transformed into $G_2$ by a chain of feasible edge-replacements. On the other hand, $G$ is called \emph{global amoeba} if there is an integer $t_0 \ge 0$ such that $G \cup tK_1$ is a local amoeba for all $t \ge t_0$. To model the dynamics of the feasible edge-replacements of $G$, we define a group ${\rm Fer}(G)$ that satisfies that $G$ is a local amoeba if and only if ${\rm Fer}(G) \cong S_n$, where $n$ is the order of $G$. Via this algebraic setting, a deeper understanding of the structure of amoebas and their intrinsic properties comes into light. Moreover, we present different constructions that prove the richness of these graph families showing, among other things, that any connected graph can be a connected component of a global amoeba, that global amoebas can be very dense and that they can have, in proportion to their order, large clique and chromatic numbers. Also, a family of global amoeba trees with a Fibonacci-like structure and with arbitrary large maximum degree is constructed.

Andrásfai and Vega graphs in Ramsey-Turán theory
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 98 (2021), no. 1, 57-80 • View PublicationBIB
Given positive integers $n\ge s$, we let ${\mathrm{ex}}(n,s)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\le s$. In the early sixties Andrásfai conjectured that for $n/3<s<n/2$ the function ${\mathrm{ex}}(n, s)$ is piecewise quadratic with critical values at $s/n={k}/({3k-1})$. We confirm that this is indeed the case whenever $s/n$ is slightly larger than a critical value, thus determining ${\mathrm{ex}}(n,s)$ for all $n$ and $s$ such that $s/n\in [{k}/({3k-1}), {k}/({3k-1})+γ_k]$, where $γ_k=Θ(k^{-6})$.
