One of the oldest results in modern graph theory, due to Mantel, asserts that every triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices has at most $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges. About half a century later Andrásfai studied dense triangle-free graphs and proved that the largest triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices without independent sets of size $αn$, where $2/5\le α< 1/2$, are blow-ups of the pentagon. More than 50 further years have elapsed since Andrásfai's work. In this article we make the next step towards understanding the structure of dense triangle-free graphs without large independent sets.
Notably, we determine the maximum size of triangle-free graphs~$G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\ge 3n/8$ and state a conjecture on the structure of the densest triangle-free graphs $G$ with $α(G) > n/3$. We remark that the case $α(G) \le n/3$ behaves differently, but due to the work of Brandt this situation is fairly well understood.

A recent result of Condon, Kim, Kühn and Osthus implies that for any $r\geq (\frac{1}{2}+o(1))n$, an $n$-vertex almost $r$-regular graph $G$ has an approximate decomposition into any collections of $n$-vertex bounded degree trees. In this paper, we prove that a similar result holds for an almost $αn$-regular graph $G$ with any $α>0$ and a collection of bounded degree trees on at most $(1-o(1))n$ vertices if $G$ does not contain large bipartite holes. This result is sharp in the sense that it is necessary to exclude large bipartite holes and we cannot hope for an approximate decomposition into $n$-vertex trees.
Moreover, this implies that for any $α>0$ and an $n$-vertex almost $αn$-regular graph $G$, with high probability, the randomly perturbed graph $G\cup \mathbf{G}(n,O(\frac{1}{n}))$ has an approximate decomposition into all collections of bounded degree trees of size at most $(1-o(1))n$ simultaneously. This is the first result considering an approximate decomposition problem in the context of Ramsey-Turán theory and the randomly perturbed graph model.

A seminal result of Hajnal and Szemerédi states that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices has minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (r-1)n/r$ for some integer $r \ge 2$, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor, assuming $r$ divides $n$. Extremal examples which show optimality of the bound on $δ(G)$ are very structured and, in particular, contain large independent sets. In analogy to the Ramsey-Turán theory, Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh initiated the study of how the absence of such large independent sets influences sufficient minimum degree. We show the following two related results:
$\bullet$ For any $r > \ell \ge 2$, if $G$ is a graph satisfying $δ(G) \ge (r - \ell)n/(r - \ell + 1) +Ω(n)$ and $α_\ell(G)=o(n)$, that is, a largest $K_\ell$-free induced subgraph has at most $o(n)$ vertices, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor. This is optimal for $\ell = r - 1$ and extends a result of Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh who considered the case $r = 3$.
$\bullet$ If a graph $G$ satisfies $δ(G) =Ω(n)$ and $α_r^*(G) =o(n)$, that is, every induced $K_r$-free $r$-partite subgraph of $G$ has at least one vertex class of size $o(n)$, then it contains a $K_r$-factor. A similar statement is proven for a general graph $H$.

Given graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,\ldots, H_k)$-free if there is a $k$-edge-colouring $φ:E(G)\rightarrow [k]$ with no monochromatic copy of $H_i$ with edges of colour $i$ for each $i\in[k]$. Fix a function $f(n)$, the Ramsey-Turán function $\textrm{RT}(n,H_1,\ldots,H_k,f(n))$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(H_1,\ldots,H_k)$-free graph with independence number at most $f(n)$. We determine $\textrm{RT}(n,K_3,K_s,δn)$ for $s\in\{3,4,5\}$ and sufficiently small $δ$, confirming a conjecture of Erdős and Sós from 1979. It is known that $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,f(n))$ has a phase transition at $f(n)=Θ(\sqrt{n\log n})$. However, the values of $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8, o(\sqrt{n\log n}))$ was not known. We determined this value by proving $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,o(\sqrt{n\log n}))=\frac{n^2}{4}+o(n^2)$, answering a question of Balogh, Hu and Simonovits. The proofs utilise, among others, dependent random choice and results from graph packings.

A well known result due to Andrásfai, Erdős, and Sós asserts that for $r\ge 2$ every $K_{r+1}$-free graph on $n$ vertices with $δ(G)>\frac{3r-4}{3r-1}n$ is $r$-partite. We study related questions in the context of weighted graphs, which are motivated by recent work on the Ramsey-Turán problem for cliques.
Erdos-Hajnal conjecture for graphs with bounded VC-dimension

The Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension (in short, VC-dimension) of a graph is defined as the VC-dimension of the set system induced by the neighborhoods of its vertices. We show that every $n$-vertex graph with bounded VC-dimension contains a clique or an independent set of size at least $e^{(\log n)^{1 - o(1)}}$. The dependence on the VC-dimension is hidden in the $o(1)$ term. This improves the general lower bound, $e^{c\sqrt{\log n}}$, due to Erdos and Hajnal, which is valid in the class of graphs satisfying any fixed nontrivial hereditary property. Our result is almost optimal and nearly matches the celebrated Erdos-Hajnal conjecture, according to which one can always find a clique or an independent set of size at least $e^{Ω(\log n)}$. Our results partially explain why most geometric intersection graphs arising in discrete and computational geometry have exceptionally favorable Ramsey-type properties.
Our main tool is a partitioning result found by Lovász-Szegedy and Alon-Fischer-Newman, which is called the "ultra-strong regularity lemma" for graphs with bounded VC-dimension. We extend this lemma to $k$-uniform hypergraphs, and prove that the number of parts in the partition can be taken to be $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(d)}$, improving the original bound of $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(d^2)}$ in the graph setting. We show that this bound is tight up to an absolute constant factor in the exponent. Moreover, we give an $O(n^k)$-time algorithm for finding a partition meeting the requirements. Finally, we establish tight bounds on Ramsey-Turán numbers for graphs with bounded VC-dimension.

An important question in extremal graph theory raised by Vera T. Sós asks to determine for a given integer $t\ge 3$ and a given positive real number $δ$ the asymptotically supremal edge density $f_t(δ)$ that an $n$-vertex graph can have provided it contains neither a complete graph $K_t$ nor an independent set of size $δn$.
Building upon recent work of Fox, Loh, and Zhao [The critical window for the classical Ramsey-Turán problem, Combinatorica 35 (2015), 435-476], we prove that if $δ$ is sufficiently small (in a sense depending on $t$), then \[ f_t(δ)=
\begin{cases}
\frac{3t-10}{3t-4}+δ-δ^2 & \text{ if $t$ is even,} \cr
\frac{t-3}{t-1}+δ& \text{ if $t$ is odd.}
\end{cases} \]

Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov proved that the $(k-1)$-partite Turán graph maximizes the number of distinct $r$-edge-colorings with no monochromatic $K_k$ for all fixed $k$ and $r=2,3$, among all $n$-vertex graphs. In this paper, we determine this function asymptotically for $r=2$ among $n$-vertex graphs with sub-linear independence number. Somewhat surprisingly, unlike Alon-Balogh-Keevash-Sudakov's result, the extremal construction from Ramsey-Turán theory, as a natural candidate, does not maximize the number of distinct edge-colorings with no monochromatic cliques among all graphs with sub-linear independence number, even in the 2-colored case.
In the second problem, we determine the maximum number of triangles asymptotically in an $n$-vertex $K_k$-free graph $G$ with $α(G)=o(n)$. The extremal graphs have similar structure to the extremal graphs for the classical Ramsey-Turán problem, i.e.~when the number of edges is maximized.

Let $s$ be an integer, $f=f(n)$ a function, and $H$ a graph. Define the Ramsey-Turán number $RT_s(n,H, f)$ as the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free graph $G$ of order $n$ with $α_s(G) < f$, where $α_s(G)$ is the maximum number of vertices in a $K_s$-free induced subgraph of $G$. The Ramsey-Turán number attracted a considerable amount of attention and has been mainly studied for $f$ not too much smaller than $n$. In this paper we consider $RT_s(n,K_t, n^δ)$ for fixed $δ<1$. We show that for an arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$ and $1/2<δ< 1$, $RT_s(n,K_{s+1}, n^δ) = Ω(n^{1+δ-\varepsilon})$ for all sufficiently large $s$. This is nearly optimal, since a trivial upper bound yields $RT_s(n,K_{s+1}, n^δ) = O(n^{1+δ})$. Furthermore, the range of $δ$ is as large as possible. We also consider more general cases and find bounds on $RT_s(n,K_{s+r},n^δ)$ for fixed $r\ge2$. Finally, we discuss a phase transition of $RT_s(n, K_{2s+1}, f)$ extending some recent result of Balogh, Hu and Simonovits.

Let $f(n)$ be a function and $L$ be a graph. Denote by $RT(n,L,f(n))$ the maximum number of edges of an $L$-free graph on $n$ vertices with independence number less than $f(n)$. Erd\H os and Sós asked if $RT\left(n, K_5, c\sqrt{n}\right) = o(n^2)$ for some constant $c$. We answer this question by proving the stronger $RT\left(n, K_5, o\left(\sqrt{n\log n}\right)\right) = o(n^2)$. It is known that $RT \left(n, K_5, c \sqrt{n\log n} \right) = n^2/4+o(n^2)$ for $c>1$, so one can say that $K_5$ has a Ramsey-Turán phase transition at $c\sqrt{n\log n}$. We extend this result to several other $K_s$'s and functions $f(n)$, determining many more phase transitions. We shall formulate several open problems, in particular, whether variants of the Bollobás-Erd\H os graph exist to give good lower bounds on $RT\left(n, K_s, f(n)\right)$ for various pairs of $s$ and $f(n)$. Among others, we use Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and the Hypergraph Dependent Random Choice Lemma. We also present a short proof of the fact that $K_s$-free graphs with small independence number are sparse.

The first application of Szemerédi's powerful regularity method was the following celebrated Ramsey-Turán result proved by Szemerédi in 1972: any K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) has at most (1/8 + o(1)) N^2 edges. Four years later, Bollobás and Erdős gave a surprising geometric construction, utilizing the isoperimetric inequality for the high dimensional sphere, of a K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) and (1/8 - o(1)) N^2 edges. Starting with Bollobás and Erdős in 1976, several problems have been asked on estimating the minimum possible independence number in the critical window, when the number of edges is about N^2 / 8. These problems have received considerable attention and remained one of the main open problems in this area. In this paper, we give nearly best-possible bounds, solving the various open problems concerning this critical window.

Let r be an integer, f(n) a function, and H a graph. Introduced by Erdős, Hajnal, Sós, and Szemerédi, the r-Ramsey-Turán number of H, RT_r(n, H, f(n)), is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex, H-free graph G with α_r(G) <= f(n) where α_r(G) denotes the K_r-independence number of G. In this note, using isoperimetric properties of the high dimensional unit sphere, we construct graphs providing lower bounds for RT_r(n,K_{r+s},o(n)) for every 2 <= s <= r. These constructions are sharp for an infinite family of pairs of r and s. The only previous sharp construction was by Bollobás and Erd\Hos for r = s = 2.

Let t be an integer, f(n) a function, and H a graph. Define the t-Ramsey-Turán number of H, RT_t(n, H, f(n)), to be the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex, H-free graph G where f(n) is larger than the maximum number of vertices in a $K_t$-free induced subgraph of G. Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós, and Szemerédi posed several open questions about RT_t(n,K_s,o(n)), among them finding the minimum s such that $RT_t(n,K_{t+s},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$, where it is easy to see that $RT_t(n,K_{t+1},o(n)) = o(n^2)$. In this paper, we answer this question by proving that $RT_t(n,K_{t+2},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$; our constructions also imply several results on the Ramsey-Turán numbers of hypergraphs.

We introduce and study a new type of Ramsey-Turan problems, a typical example of which is the following one: let c>0 and G be a graph of sufficiently large order n with minimum degree >3n/4. If the edges of G are colored in blue or red, then for every 3<k<(1/8-c)n, there exists a monochromatic cycle of length k.

A $ρ$-mean coloring of a graph is a coloring of the edges such that the average number of colors incident with each vertex is at most $ρ$. For a graph $H$ and for $ρ\geq 1$, the {\em mean Ramsey-Turán number} $RT(n,H,ρ-mean)$ is the maximum number of edges a $ρ$-mean colored graph with $n$ vertices can have under the condition it does not have a monochromatic copy of $H$. It is conjectured that $RT(n,K_m,2-mean)=RT(n,K_m,2)$ where $RT(n,H,k)$ is the maximum number of edges a $k$ edge-colored graph with $n$ vertices can have under the condition it does not have a monochromatic copy of $H$. We prove the conjecture holds for $K_3$. We also prove that $RT(n,H,ρ-mean) \leq RT(n,K_{χ(H)},ρ-mean)+o(n^2)$. This result is tight for graphs $H$ whose clique number equals their chromatic number. In particular we get that if $H$ is a 3-chromatic graph having a triangle then $RT(n,H,2-mean) = RT(n,K_3,2-mean)+o(n^2)=RT(n,K_3,2)+o(n^2)=0.4n^2(1+o(1))$.
