An improved bound on the minimum size of Turán $(r+1,r)$-systems
For positive integers $n\ge s>r$, let $T(n,s,r)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that every $s$-set of vertices contains at least one edge. A simple averaging argument shows that the ratio $T(n,s,r)/\binom nr$ is non-decreasing in $n$ and we denote its limit as $n\to\infty$ by $t(s,r)$.
The case $s=r+1$ has a rich history, with the previously best known asymptotic bounds for $r\to\infty$ being $1\le r\cdot t(r+1,r)\le 4.91...$ . In this paper, we present a simple probabilistic construction which shows that $(r+2)\cdot t(r+1,r)\le 4$ for every $r\ge1$. We also derandomise it and discuss applications to covering codes.
A local clique density theorem in $H$-free graphs
In 2016, Reiher's clique density theorem determined the minimum number of copies of $K_t$ in a graph with a prescribed edge density. In this paper, we investigate its local version and prove a local clique density theorem in $H$-free graphs as follows. For integers $r$ and $t$ with $2\leq t\leq r-1$, any $r$-chromatic graph $H$, any real numbers $γ$ and $α$ with $\frac{t-2}{2(t-1)}\leqγ\leq \frac{r-2}{2(r-1)}$ and $0\leqα\leq 1$, we determine the maximum value $β:=β(r,t,α,γ)$ such that for every $n$-vertex $H$-free graph $G$ with at least $γn^2$ edges, every $\lceilαn\rceil$-vertex subset in $G$ contains at least $(β-o(1))n^{t}$ copies of $K_t$. In particular, when $H=K_r$, every $\lceilαn\rceil$-vertex subset contains at least $\lfloorβn^t\rfloor$ copies of $K_t$, which is an exact bound. For suitable choices of $α$ and $γ$, namely, those for which all part ratios in the corresponding extremal construction are rational, this bound is attained for infinitely many values of $n$.
Covering the ternary cube by binary subcubes
For an integer $n\ge0$, let $f(n)$ be the minimum number of subcubes of $\mathbb{Z}_3^n$ of the form $A_1\times\cdots\times A_n$, where $|A_i|=2$ for every $i$, whose union covers $\mathbb{Z}_3^n$. A simple counting argument gives $f(n)\ge(3/2)^n$, while $f(n)=O(n(3/2)^n)$ by random construction. We prove that $f(n)\le2(3/2)^n-1$, answering a problem of Imre Leader. We also show that $f(n)/(3/2)^n$ is nondecreasing and there exists a constant $C_3$ such that $f(n)=(C_3+o(1))(3/2)^n$ where $1.62227<C_3\le2$.
Every fork-free graph is perfectly weight divisible
A graph $G$ is \emph{perfectly weight divisible} if, for every positive integral weight function on $V(G)$ and every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ with at least one edge, the vertex set $V(H)$ can be partitioned into two sets $A$ and $B$ such that $H[A]$ is perfect and the maximum weight of a clique in $H[B]$ is smaller than the maximum weight of a clique in $H$. Perfect divisibility and its weighted form provide a natural approach to polynomial $χ$-boundedness. A \emph{fork}, also known as a \emph{chair}, is the graph obtained from a claw by subdividing one of its edges once. In this paper, we prove that every fork-free graph is perfectly weight divisible. As a consequence, we confirm a conjecture of Sivaraman that every fork-free graph is perfectly divisible.
An Optimal Bound for Ramsey Goodness of Cycles
For graphs $F$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(F,H)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that every $N$-vertex graph contains $F$ or its complement contains $H$. If $F$ is connected and $|F|\geσ(H)$, a construction of Burr gives $R(F,H)\ge(χ(H)-1)(|F|-1)+σ(H)$, where $σ(H)$ denotes the minimum order of a color class in a proper $χ(H)$-coloring of $H$. Burr proved that this bound is attained for $F=C_n$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. Allen, Brightwell and Skokan conjectured that equality already holds whenever $n\geq |H| χ(H)$, while Haslegrave, Hyde, Kim and Liu subsequently proved it whenever $n\ge C|H|\log^4χ(H)$.
Pokrovskiy and Sudakov conjectured that the optimal linear condition $n\geq C|H|$ suffices; this conjecture was also highlighted by Montgomery in his 2026 ICM survey (see Conjecture 9.2). In this paper, we resolve this conjecture by proving that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that $R(C_n,H)=(χ(H)-1)(n-1)+σ(H)$ for every nonempty graph $H$ and every $n\ge C|H|$. This gives the first bound linear in $|H|$, and is best possible up to a constant factor. Our proof builds on the framework of Haslegrave, Hyde, Kim and Liu, and combines some new ideas in expansion and switching cycle lengths.
Optimal coloring of $\{\mathrm{cap},\mathrm{even\ hole}\}$-free graphs with no short odd holes
A \emph{hole} is an induced cycle of length at least four, and an \emph{even hole} is a hole of even length. A \emph{cap} is obtained from a hole by adding a vertex adjacent to exactly two consecutive vertices of the hole. Chen, Xu, and Xu proved that every $\{\mathrm{cap},\mathrm{even\ hole}\}$-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq \left\lceil\frac{5}{4}ω(G)\right\rceil$, and improved this bound to $χ(G)\leq \left\lceil\frac{7}{6}ω(G)\right\rceil$ when $5$-holes are also excluded. They asked whether, for every integer $q\geq3$, every $\{\mathrm{cap},\mathrm{even\ hole}\}$-free graph $G$ with no odd hole of length at most $2q-1$ satisfies $$ χ(G)\leq \left\lceil\frac{2q+1}{2q}ω(G)\right\rceil. $$ We answer this question affirmatively and show that the bound is sharp for every $q\geq3$.
Extremal Families for the Erdős--Kleitman Problem: The Missing Constructions
For integers $n\ge s\ge2$, let $e(n,s)$ be the maximum size of a family $\mathcal F\subseteq2^{[n]}$ with no $s$ pairwise disjoint members. The problem of determining $e(n,s)$, now called the Erdős--Kleitman problem, is closely related to the well-known Erdős matching problem. Frankl and Kupavskii posed a meta-conjecture predicting that the maximum is always attained by a weighted family.
Fix $m\ge3$, write $n=ms+c$ with $0\le c<s$, and set $\ell=s-c$. For $0\le k\le m$, let $a_k=ms-kc-1$. For $A\in\binom{[n]}{a_k}$, define
\[
\mathcal H^k(m,s,\ell;A):=
\{F\subseteq[n]: k|F|+|F\cap A|\ge m(k+1)\}.
\] This defines a unified class of weighted families with matching number less than $s$. Among these families, $\mathcal H^0$, $\mathcal H^1$, and $\mathcal H^m$ were previously known to be extremal in different ranges of $c$.
We show that for $1\le k\le m-1$, all families $\mathcal H^k$ are uniquely extremal in some ranges of $c$. More precisely, we prove that for every $m\ge3$ and every $1\le k\le m-1$, there exist constants $α=α(m,k)>0$, $β=β(m,k)>0$ and an integer $s_0=s_0(m,k)$ such that, for all integers $s\ge s_0$ and all integers $c$ with $0\le c<s$, the only extremal families for $e(n,s)$ are the families $\mathcal H^k(m,s,\ell;A)$ with $A\in\binom{[n]}{a_k}$ whenever $βs^{(k-1)/k}\le c\le αs^{k/(k+1)}$. In particular, this result determines an infinite number of new extremal families for the Erdős--Kleitman problem and verifies the Frankl--Kupavskii meta-conjecture in these ranges. This also provides a quantitative extension of the result of Kupavskii and Sokolov on the extremality of $\mathcal H^1$.
Perfect matching in 4-partite 4-uniform hypergraphs
A balanced $k$-partite $k$-graph is a $k$-uniform hypergraph such that every edge intersects each partition class in exactly one vertex, where each partition class has size $n$. Lo and Markström (2014) determined the minimum vertex-degree threshold for perfect matchings in balanced \(3\)-partite \(3\)-graphs. In this paper, we determine the minimum vertex-degree threshold for balanced \(4\)-partite \(4\)-graphs. The proof relies on a reduction framework for \(k\)-partite \(k\)-graphs, through which the existence of a perfect fractional matching is converted into a finite-dimensional optimization problem.
A Single-Exponential Erdős--Hajnal Bound for Graphs of Bounded VC-Dimension
A homogeneous set in a graph is a clique or a stable set. The Erdős--Hajnal conjecture states that, for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices has a homogeneous set of size at least $n^c$. Nguyen, Scott and Seymour proved that for every $d>0$, graphs of VC-dimension at most $d$ have the Erdős--Hajnal property, confirming a conjecture of Fox, Pach and Suk. In particular, they showed that every such $n$-vertex graph contains a homogeneous set of size at least $n^{η_d}$ for some $η_d\ge 2^{-2^{O(d)}}$. In this paper, we give a sharper quantitative bound on the homogeneous sets in graphs of VC-dimension at most $d$, showing that one may take $
η_d\ge (Cd)^{-d}, $
where $C$ is an absolute constant. Equivalently, every graph $G$ of VC-dimension at most $d$ satisfies \[
\max\{ω(G),α(G)\}\ge |G|^{(Cd)^{-d}}. \] Our proof refines the iterative sparsification method of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour. The main enhancement is to apply the VC-dimension assumption directly, which gives a more efficient induction and thus improves the dependence on $d$. We also derive quantitative consequences for polynomial Rödl subgraphs, hypergraph Ramsey bounds under bounded VC-dimension, induced-free and viral formulations, tournaments, NIP and semi-algebraic graphs, Boolean combinations of relations of bounded VC-dimension, graphs whose adjacency matrices have bounded rank, graphs of bounded sign-rank, and graphs defined by dot-product threshold representations.
Proofs of Two Conjectures of Alon on Subgraph Counts
All graphs considered are finite with no isolated vertices. Let $N(m,H)$ be the maximum number of subgraphs of a graph $G$ isomorphic to $H$, taken over all graphs $G$ with $m$ edges. Alon proved that $N(m,H)=Θ_H(m^{γ(H)})$, where $γ(H)=(|V(H)|+D(H))/2$ and $D(H)=\max_{S\subseteq V(H)}(|S|-|N_H(S)|)$, and conjectured [Conjecture 1, Isr. J. Math., 1986] that limit of $N(m,H)/m^{γ(H)}$ exists as $m\to\infty$. We prove this conjecture and identify the limit as $λ(H)=Λ(H)/|\operatorname{Aut}(H)|$, where $Λ(H)$ is characterized by a variational problem over finite cores. We also resolve another conjecture of Alon [Conjecture 2, Isr. J. Math., 1986], which stated that if $H$ is a disjoint union of stars, then for every $m$ an extremal graph attaining $N(m,H)$ may be chosen to be a disjoint union of stars.
Tight Bound for Nikiforov's Spectral Even-Cycle Conjecture
Nikiforov conjectured that, for every fixed $k\ge2$ and all sufficiently large $n$, the unique $n$-vertex $C_{2k+2}$-free graph with maximum adjacency spectral radius is $S^+_{n,k}$, where $S_{n,k}=K_k\vee\overline K_{n-k}$ and $S^+_{n,k}$ is obtained from $S_{n,k}$ by adding one edge inside the independent part. Cioabă, Desai and Tait proved this conjecture for $n\ge k^{O(k)}$. Later, Li and Ning raised the problem of determining the optimal exponent $γ=γ(k)$ such that the same conclusion holds for $n\ge Ω(k^{γ(k)})$.
We prove a stronger uniform theorem for Nikiforov's matrices $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$. More precisely, for every $ε>0$ there are constants $C_ε$ and $k_ε$ such that for all $0\leα\le1-ε$, $k\ge k_ε$ and $n\ge C_εk$, every $n$-vertex $C_{2k+2}$-free graph $G$ satisfies $ρ_α(G)\leρ_α(S^+_{n,k})$, with equality if and only if $G\cong S^+_{n,k}$. In particular, the case when $α=0$ answers the problem of Li and Ning in the linear range, and the $A_α$-spectral even-cycle threshold is linear in $k$, uniformly for all $α$ bounded away from $1$.
Our proof introduces a weighted rooted Erdős--Gallai type path lemma, which may be of independent interest in Perron-vector methods for spectral extremal graph problems. The same method also yields asymptotically tight $A_α$-spectral bounds for two local forbidden-subgraph families, namely $(K_1\vee P_\ell)$-free graphs and $F_s$-free graphs, where $F_s$ denotes the friendship graph.
Graphs with girth 8 and without longer even holes are 3-colorable
For an integer $\ell\geq 2$, let ${\cal{H}}_{\ell}$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2\ell$ and have no even hole of length greater than $2\ell$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq 2} {\cal{H}}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. Chen showed that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq 5} {\cal{H}}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that every graph in ${\cal{H}}_4$ is $3$-colorable.
Induced subdivisions in graphs of large girth
In this paper, we prove that there exists an absolute constant $g_0$ such that, for every integer $k\ge 3$, every graph $G$ with $δ(G)\ge k$ and $g(G)\ge g_0$ contains an induced subdivision of $K_{k+1}$. This answers, in a strong sense, a problem asked by Kühn and Osthus (originally attributed to Shi). A main ingredient in our proof is an induced variant of Mader's theorem: for every fixed \(s,η,D\), every graph \(J\) with \(Δ(J)\le D\), \(d(J)>s-2+η\) and sufficiently large girth contains an induced subdivision of \(K_s\).
Towards the Erdős--Kleitman Problem: from Erdős matching conjecture perspective
For integers $n\ge s\ge2$, let $e(n,s)$ denote the maximum size of a family $\F\subseteq2^{[n]}$ with no $s$ pairwise disjoint members. The problem of determining $e(n,s)$, now called the Erdős--Kleitman problem, is the non-uniform analogue of the Erdős matching problem. Fix $m\ge3$ and write $n=sm+c$, $\ell=s-c$. We prove that for every fixed $m\ge3$, there exists constants $β_m$ and $δ_m$ such that for sufficiently large $s$, the extremal families for $e(sm+c,s)$ are $P'(m,s,\ell;L')\coloneqq \binom{L'}m\cup\binom{[sm+c]}{\ge m+1}$ for some $L'$ with $|L'|=m\ell-1$ when $β_m s^{(m-1)/m}\le c\le δ_m s$. For $m=3$, we determine the asymptotic range of $\ell$ for which $P'(3,s,\ell;L')$ is extremal.
A solution to Frankl and Kupavskii's conjecture concerning Erdos-Kleitman matching problem
For integers $n\ge s\ge2$, let $e(n,s)$ be the maximum size of a family
$\F\subseteq2^{[n]}$ with no $s$ pairwise disjoint members.
The study of determining $e(n,s)$ is closely related to its uniform
counterpart, the well-known Erdős matching conjecture.
Frankl and Kupavskii conjectured an exact formula for $e((m+1)s-\ell,s)$ when $1\le \ell\le \lceil s/2\rceil$.
We prove that for every fixed $m\ge3$ and sufficiently large $s$, the extremal families for $e((m+1)s-\ell,s)$ are
\[
P(m,s,\ell;L)\coloneqq\{A\subseteq [n]\colon |A|+|A\cap L|\ge m+1\} \text{ for some $L$ with } |L|=\ell-1
\]
when $1\le \ell\le (\frac{m+1}{2m+1}-o(1))s$.
In particular, this confirms the Frankl--Kupavskii conjecture for every
fixed $m\ge3$ and all sufficiently large $s$.
For $m=3$, we determine the whole range of $\ell$ for which $P(3,s,\ell;L)$ is extremal, generalizing a theorem of Kupavskii and Sokolov.
A local Turán inequality for walks and the spectral radius
For a vertex $v$, let $c_G(v)$ be the order of the largest clique containing $v$, and let $w_r(v)$ be the number of walks with $r$ vertices starting at $v$. We prove that, for every finite simple graph $G$ and every integer $r\ge 1$, \begin{flalign*}
λ_1(G)^r
\le
\sum_{v\in V(G)} w_r(v)\frac{c_G(v)-1}{c_G(v)}. \end{flalign*} This confirms a conjecture of Kannan, Kumar, and Pragada. It strengthens Nikiforov's walk inequality and extends, in a unified form, the localized Wilf theorem and the degree-local Turán inequality of Liu and Ning. The proof is based on the stationary distribution of a Markov chain whose transition matrix is constructed from a Perron vector of $A(G)$, together with a weighted local spectral Turán theorem. We determine all the extremal graphs.
On the structures of {diamond, bowtie}-free graphs that do not contain an induced subdivision of $K_4$
A graph is $\mathrm{ISK}_4$-free if it contains no induced subdivision of $K_4$. Lévêque et al. [\emph{J. Combin. Theory Ser. B} \textbf{102} (2012) 924--947] conjectured that all $\mathrm{ISK}_4$-free graphs are 4-colorable. Chen et al. [\emph{J. Graph Theory} \textbf{96} (2021) 554--577] proved that $\{\mathrm{ISK}_4, \mathrm{diamond}, \mathrm{bowtie}\}$-free graphs are 4-colorable and asked whether such graphs are 3-colorable, where a diamond is $K_4$ minus one edge and a bowtie consists of two triangles sharing a vertex. In this paper, we characterize the structures of $\{\mathrm{ISK}_4, \mathrm{diamond}, \mathrm{bowtie}\}$-free graphs and prove that such graphs are 3-colorable, which answers a question of Chen et al. [\emph{J. Graph Theory} \textbf{96} (2021) 554--577] affirmatively and extends a result of Chudnovsky et al. [\emph{J. Graph Theory} \textbf{92} (2019) 67--95]. Furthermore, our structural theorem yields a polynomial-time algorithm for decomposing $\{\mathrm{ISK}_4, \mathrm{diamond}, \mathrm{bowtie}\}$-free graphs, and consequently a polynomial-time algorithm for coloring this class of graphs.
A quadratic-time coloring algorithm for graphs with large maximum degree
Graph coloring is a central problem in graph theory and is NP-hard for general graphs. Motivated by the Borodin--Kostochka conjecture, we study the algorithmic problem of coloring graphs with large maximum degree and no clique of size $Δ$. We give a quadratic-time coloring algorithm that constructs a $(Δ-1)$-coloring for such graphs. We also prove that every graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 7.3 \times 10^9$ and clique number $ω(G) < Δ$ satisfies $χ(G) \le Δ- 1$. This improves a longstanding result of Reed.
Nearly tight bound for rainbow clique subdivisions in properly edge-colored graphs and applications
An edge-colored graph is said to be rainbow if all its edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we study the rainbow analogue of a fundamental result of Mader [\emph{Math. Ann.} \textbf{174} (1967), 265--268] on the existence of subdivisions in graphs with large average degree. This is part of the study of rainbow analogues of classical Turán problems, a framework systematically introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte [\emph{Combin. Probab. Comput.} \textbf{16} (2007), 109--126]. We prove that every properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with average degree at least $t^2(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_t$. When $t$ is a constant, this bound is tight up to the $o(1)$ term. So it essentially resolves a question raised by Jiang, Methuku and Yepremyan [\emph{European J. Combin.} \textbf{110} (2023), 103675] on rainbow clique subdivisions, and also implies a result of Alon, Bucić, Sauermann, Zakharov and Zamir [\emph{Proc. Lond. Math. Soc.} \textbf{130} (2025), e70044] on rainbow cycles. In addition, we present several applications of our result to problems in additive combinatorics, number theory and coding theory.
Path decompositions of Eulerian graphs
Gallai's conjecture asserts that every connected graph on $n$ vertices can be decomposed into $\frac{n+1}{2}$ paths. For general graphs (possibly disconnected), it was proved that every graph on $n$ vertices can be decomposed into $\frac{2n}{3}$ paths. This is also best possible (consider the graphs consisting of vertex-disjoint triangles). Lovász showed that every $n$-vertex graph with at most one vertex of even degree can be decomposed into $\frac{n}{2}$ paths. However, Gallai's conjecture is difficult for graphs with many vertices of even degrees. Favaron and Kouider verified Gallai's conjecture for all Eulerian graphs with maximum degree at most $4$. In this paper, we show if $G$ is an Eulerian graph on $n \ge 4$ vertices and the distance between any two triangles in $G$ is at least $3$, then $G$ can be decomposed into at most $\frac{3n}{5}$ paths.
