Ramsey-type results for threshold graphs and beyond
A {\it threshold graph} is a graph that can be constructed from the one-vertex graph by repeatedly adding either a dominating vertex or an isolated vertex. Motivated by an induced Ramsey-type problem for this class, we define $r'_2(s)$ to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $n$-vertex graph contains an induced threshold graph on $s$ vertices. We establish exponential upper and lower bounds for $r'_2(s)$ and determine its exact values for $s\in\{3,4,5,6\}$. To study this problem from an edge-coloring perspective, we use the notion of an orderable coloring, introduced by Richer [{\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. B}, 80(1) (2000), 172--177]. An edge-colored graph is {\it orderable} if its vertices can be ordered so that, for each vertex, all edges from it to later vertices have the same color. Equivalently, $r'_2(s)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every $2$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains an orderable $K_s$. We also determine the exact value of the unordered canonical Ramsey number $CR(s, 3)$ for all $s \ge 3$, where $CR(s,3)$ denotes the minimum integer $n$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either an orderable $K_s$ or a rainbow $K_3$. More generally, for graphs $G$ and $H$, we study $r'_2(G)$, the corresponding $2$-color Ramsey number for an orderable $G$, and $CR(G,H)$, where the alternative is a rainbow $H$. For complete bipartite graphs, we prove that for every fixed $s$, $r'_2(K_{s,t}) = CR(K_{s,t}, K_3)= \left(\frac{2^s}{s+1}+o(1)\right)t$ as $t\to\infty$. For $s\in \{2,3\}$, we further determine the exact values of these parameters for infinitely many $t$, using constructions arising from strongly regular graphs, Hadamard matrices and conference matrices.
On the rainbow Cameron-Erdős problem with respect to generalized Sidon sets of multidimensional grids
For positive integers $n$, $d$, $k$ and $h$, let $[n]^d$ be the $d$-dimensional grid of order $n$, and we refer to the equation $\sum_{i=1}^{h}x_{1,i}=\cdots =\sum_{i=1}^{h}x_{k,i}$ as the {\it $B_{k,h}$-equation}, where $x_{1,1}, \ldots, x_{1,h}, \ldots, x_{k,1}, \ldots, x_{k,h}$ are $kh$ points in $[n]^d$. In this paper, we study the rainbow Cameron-Erdős problem with respect to the $B_{k,h}$-equation. We obtain the asymptotic number of $r$-colorings of $[n]^d$ without rainbow solutions to the $B_{k,h}$-equation, and we show that the typical colorings with this property are $(kh-1)$-colorings. We also prove that among all subsets of $[n]^d$, $[n]^d$ is the unique subset admitting the maximum number of $r$-colorings without rainbow solutions to the $B_{k,h}$-equation. The case $d=1$ and $k=h=2$ of our result confirms a conjecture on Sidon sets by Lin, Wang and Zhou~[{\it European J. Combin.}, 2022]; the case $d=1$, $k=2$ and $h\geq 2$ of our result partly solves a problem concerning linear equations proposed by Cheng, Jing, Li, Wang and Zhou~[{\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. A}, 2023]; the case $d\geq 2$ and $k=h=2$ corresponds to colorings without rainbow (possibly degenerate) parallelograms, and this geometric perspective might be of independent interest. Our proof combines the hypergraph container method with a stability analysis and a deviation gain argument.
Constrained Ramsey numbers for rainbow $P_5$
Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the {\it $k$-colored Ramsey number} $R_k(H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that in every $k$-edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$, there is a monochromatic copy of $H$. Given two graphs $H$ and $G$, the {\it constrained Ramsey number} (also called {\it rainbow Ramsey number}) $f(H,G)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that, in every edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ with any number of colors, there is either a monochromatic copy of $H$ or a rainbow copy of $G$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices. Gyárfás, Lehel and Schelp proved that $f(H,P_5)=R_3(H)$ when $H$ is a path or a cycle. Li, Besse, Magnant, Wang and Watts conjectured that $f(H,P_5)=R_3(H)$ for any graph $H$, and confirmed this for all connected graphs and all bipartite graphs. In this paper, we address this conjecture for multiple classes of disconnected graphs with chromatic number at least 3. Our newly established general results encompass all known results on this problem. We also obtain several results for a bipartite variation of the problem. In addition, we propose a series of questions concerning this problem from multiple distinct aspects for further research.
Edge-colored 3-uniform hypergraphs without rainbow paths of length 3 and its applications to Ramsey theory
Motivated by Ramsey theory problems, we consider edge-colorings of 3-uniform hypergraphs that contain no rainbow paths of length 3. There are three 3-uniform paths of length 3: the tight path $\mathcal{T}=\{v_1v_2v_3, v_2v_3v_4, v_3v_4v_5\}$, the messy path $\mathcal{M}=\{v_1v_2v_3, v_2v_3v_4, v_4v_5v_6\}$ and the loose path $\mathcal{L}=\{v_1v_2v_3,$ $v_3v_4v_5, v_5v_6v_7\}$. In this paper, we characterize the structures of edge-colored complete 3-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{(3)}$ without rainbow $\mathcal{T}$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{L}$, respectively. This generalizes a result of Thomason-Wagner on edge-colored complete graph $K_n$ without rainbow paths of length 3. We also obtain a multipartite generalization of these results.
As applications, we obtain several Ramsey-type results. Given two $3$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $G$, the {\it constrained Ramsey number} $f(H,G)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that, in every edge-coloring of $K^{(3)}_n$ with any number of colors, there is either a monochromatic copy of $H$ or a rainbow copy of $G$. For $G\in \{\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{M}, \mathcal{L}\}$ and infinitely many 3-uniform hypergraphs $H$, we reduce $f(H, G)$ to the 2-colored Ramsey number $R_2(H)$ of $H$, that is, $f(H, G)=R_2(H)$. Given a $3$-uniform hypergraph $G$ and an integer $n\geq |V(G)|$, the {\it anti-Ramsey number} $ar(n, G)$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that, in every edge-coloring of $K^{(3)}_n$ with at least $k$ colors, there is a rainbow copy of $G$. We show that $ar(n, \mathcal{T})=\left\lfloor\frac{n}{3}\right\rfloor+2$ for $n\geq 5$, $ar(n, \mathcal{M})=3$ for $n\geq 7$, and $ar(n, \mathcal{L})=n$ for $n\geq 7$. Our newly obtained Ramsey-type results extend results of Gyárfás-Lehel-Schelp and Liu on constrained Ramsey numbers, and improve a result of Tang-Li-Yan on anti-Ramsey numbers.
On the multicolor Turán conjecture for color-critical graphs
A {\it simple $k$-coloring} of a multigraph $G$ is a decomposition of the edge multiset as a disjoint sum of $k$ simple graphs which are referred as colors. A subgraph $H$ of a multigraph $G$ is called {\it multicolored} if its edges receive distinct colors in a given simple $k$-coloring of $G$. In 2004, Keevash-Saks-Sudakov-Verstraëte introduced the {\it $k$-color Turán number} $ex_k(n,H)$, which denotes the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex multigraph that has a simple $k$-coloring containing no multicolored copies of $H$. They made a conjecture for any $r\geq 3$ and $r$-color-critical graph $H$ that in the range of $k\geq \frac{r-1}{r-2}(e(H)-1)$, if $n$ is sufficiently large, then $ex_k(n, H)$ is achieved by the multigraph consisting of $k$ colors all of which are identical copies of the Turán graph $T_{r-1}(n)$. In this paper, we show that this holds in the range of $k\geq 2\frac{r-1}{r}(e(H)-1)$, significantly improving earlier results. Our proof combines the stability argument of Chakraborti-Kim-Lee-Liu-Seo with a novel graph packing technique for embedding multigraphs.

For a fixed graph $H$, we say that an edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{weakly $H$-rainbow saturated} if there exists an ordering $e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_m$ of $E\left(\overline{G}\right)$ such that, for any list $c_1, c_2, \ldots, c_m$ of pairwise distinct colors from $\mathbb{N}$, the non-edges $e_i$ in color $c_i$ can be added to $G$, one at a time, so that every added edge creates a new rainbow copy of $H$. The \emph{weak rainbow saturation number} of $H$, denoted by $rwsat(n,H)$, is the minimum number of edges in a weakly $H$-rainbow saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we show that for any non-empty graph $H$, the limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{rwsat(n, H)}{n}$ exists. This answers a question of Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison and Ogden [{\it SIAM J. Discrete Math.} (2023)]. We also provide lower and upper bounds on this limit, and in particular, we show that this limit is nonzero if and only if $H$ contains no pendant edges.

Given two graphs $G, H$ and a positive integer $q$, an $(H,q)$-coloring of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ such that every copy of $H$ in $G$ receives at least $q$ distinct colors. The bipartite Erdős-Gyárfás function $r(K_{n,n}, K_{s,t}, q)$ is defined to be the minimum number of colors needed for $K_{n,n}$ to have a $(K_{s,t}, q)$-coloring. For balanced complete bipartite graphs $K_{p,p}$, the function $r(K_{n,n}, K_{p,p}, q)$ was studied systematically in [Axenovich, Füredi and Mubayi, {\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. B} {\bf 79} (2000), 66--86]. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of this function for complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ that are not necessarily balanced. Our main results deal with thresholds and lower and upper bounds for the growth rate of this function, in particular for (sub)linear and (sub)quadratic growth. We also obtain new lower bounds for the balanced bipartite case, and improve several results given by Axenovich, Füredi and Mubayi. Our proof techniques are based on an extension to bipartite graphs of the recently developed Color Energy Method by Pohoata and Sheffer and its refinements, and a generalization of an old result due to Corrádi.

In this paper, we study the rainbow Erdős-Rothschild problem with respect to 3-term arithmetic progressions. We obtain the asymptotic number of $r$-colorings of $[n]$ without rainbow 3-term arithmetic progressions, and we show that the typical colorings with this property are 2-colorings. We also prove that $[n]$ attains the maximum number of rainbow 3-term arithmetic progression-free $r$-colorings among all subsets of $[n]$. Moreover, the exact number of rainbow 3-term arithmetic progression-free $r$-colorings of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is obtained, where $p$ is any prime and $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is the cyclic group of order $p$.

For fixed $p$ and $q$, an edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ is said to be a $(p, q)$-coloring if every $K_p$ receives at least $q$ distinct colors. The function $f(n, p, q)$ is the minimum number of colors needed for $K_n$ to have a $(p, q)$-coloring. This function was introduced about 45 years ago, but was studied systematically by Erdős and Gyárfás in 1997, and is now known as the Erdős-Gyárfás function. In this paper, we study $f(n, p, q)$ with respect to Gallai-colorings, where a Gallai-coloring is an edge-coloring of $K_n$ without rainbow triangles. Combining the two concepts, we consider the function $g(n, p, q)$ that is the minimum number of colors needed for a Gallai-$(p, q)$-coloring of $K_n$. Using the anti-Ramsey number for $K_3$, we have that $g(n, p, q)$ is nontrivial only for $2\leq q\leq p-1$. We give a general lower bound for this function and we study how this function falls off from being equal to $n-1$ when $q=p-1$ and $p\geq 4$ to being $Θ(\log n)$ when $q = 2$. In particular, for appropriate $p$ and $n$, we prove that $g=n-c$ when $q=p-c$ and $c\in \{1,2\}$, $g$ is at most a fractional power of $n$ when $q=\lfloor\sqrt{p-1}\rfloor$, and $g$ is logarithmic in $n$ when $2\leq q\leq \lfloor\log_2 (p-1)\rfloor+1$.

A Gallai-coloring (Gallai-$k$-coloring) is an edge-coloring (with colors from $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$) of a complete graph without rainbow triangles. Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that every Gallai-$k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider two extremal problems related to Gallai-$k$-colorings. First, we determine upper and lower bounds for the maximum number of edges that are not contained in any rainbow triangle or monochromatic triangle in a $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$. Second, for $n\geq GR_k(K_3)$, we determine upper and lower bounds for the minimum number of monochromatic triangles in a Gallai-$k$-coloring of $K_{n}$, yielding the exact value for $k=3$. Furthermore, we determine the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(K_4+e)$ for the graph on five vertices consisting of a $K_4$ with a pendant edge.
Gallai-Ramsey numbers for rainbow paths
Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number}, denoted by $gr_{k}(G : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every coloring of $K_{n}$ using at most $k$ colors will contain either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. We consider this question in the cases where $G \in \{P_{4}, P_{5}\}$. In the case where $G = P_{4}$, we completely solve the Gallai-Ramsey question by reducing to the $2$-color Ramsey numbers. In the case where $G = P_{5}$, we conjecture that the problem reduces to the $3$-color Ramsey numbers and provide several results in support of this conjecture.

Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $gr_k(G : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider $gr_k(K_3 : H)$ where $H$ is a connected graph with five vertices and at most six edges. There are in total thirteen graphs in this graph class, and the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for some of them have been studied step by step in several papers. We determine all the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the remaining graphs, and we also obtain some related results for a class of unicyclic graphs.

Let $n, k, m$ be positive integers with $n\gg m\gg k$, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of graphs $G$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $n-f(G,k,m)$ in any rainbow $G$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors. In this paper, we prove that the set $\mathcal{A}$ consists of precisely $P_6$, $P_3\cup P_4$, $K_2\cup P_5$, $K_2\cup 2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_3$, $2K_2\cup P^{+}_4$, $3K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3. Moreover, we show that for any graph $H\in \mathcal{A}$, if $n$ sufficiently larger than $m$ and $k$, then any rainbow $(P_3\cup H)$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors contains a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $cn$, where $c=c(H)$ is a constant, not depending on $n$, $m$ or $k$.
Furthermore, we consider a parallel problem in complete bipartite graphs. Let $s, t, k, m$ be positive integers with ${\rm min}\left\{s, t\right\}\gg m\gg k$ and $m\geq |E(H)|$, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be the set of bipartite graphs $H$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $s+t-f(H,k,m)$ in any rainbow $H$-free coloring of $K_{s,t}$ using all the $m$ colors, where $f(H,k,m)$ is not depending on $s$ or $t$. We prove that the set $\mathcal{B}$ consists of precisely $2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3.
Finally, we consider the large $k$-connected multicolored subgraph instead of monochromatic subgraph. We show that for $1\leq k \leq 3$ and $n$ sufficiently large, every Gallai-3-coloring of $K_n$ contains a $k$-connected subgraph of order at least $n-\left\lfloor\frac{k-1}{2}\right\rfloor$ using at most two colors. We also show that the above statement is false for $k=4t$, where $t$ is an positive integer.
The unicyclic graphs with the second smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue no less than $1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$
Let $λ_{2}(G)$ be the second smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph $G$. In this paper, we determine all unicyclic graphs of order $n\geq21$ with $λ_{2}(G)\geq 1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$. Moreover, the unicyclic graphs with $λ_{2}(G)=1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$ are also determined.
