The Distance Spectrum Does Not Determine Bipartiteness
Over a decade ago, Koolen, Hayat, and Iqbal posed the problem of whether the distance spectrum determines bipartiteness within the class of connected graphs. In this paper, we resolve this problem in the negative: we explicitly construct an infinite family of counterexamples, where each pair comprises a connected bipartite graph and a connected non-bipartite graph with equal distance spectra.
Structural Reductions for Monochromatic Matchings and Ramsey Tilings
The Alon--Frankl--Lovász theorem determines the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs; equivalently, it gives the sharp minimum size of a monochromatic matching in every \(r\)-edge-colouring of the complete \(t\)-uniform hypergraph. The known proofs of the exact theorem are topological. We develop a topology-free structural framework for its asymptotic form and for related sparse and tiling problems. Our main theorem shows that every \(r\)-colouring of a sufficiently pseudo-random \(t\)-graph can be reduced, with only \(o(n)\) loss in the largest monochromatic matching, to a colouring of \(K_n^{(t)}\) whose vertex set is partitioned into at most \(r\) parts and whose edge colours depend only on intersection profiles. The proof combines hypergraph regularity, LP duality, and convex-geometric compression. As consequences, we obtain a topology-free proof of the asymptotic AFL theorem, a sparse random transference theorem, and near-exact bounds in a linear-uniformity regime of Meunier's stable Kneser conjecture. For a graph \(H\), let \(Rt_r(H;K_n)\) be the minimum, over all \(r\)-edge-colourings of \(K_n\), of the largest monochromatic \(H\)-tiling. We prove \[ Rt_r(H;K_n)=(β_{r,H}+o(1))n, \] where \(β_{r,H}\) is effectively computable from finitely many linear programs depending only on \(H\) and \(r\). An additional multipartite Ramsey extraction is the key ingredient needed to reconstruct consistent graph templates. This gives an effective asymptotic solution to the complete-host multicolour Ramsey-tiling problem, extending the classical two-colour theorem of Burr, Erdős and Spencer. We also determine explicit constants for several natural families, including connected non-bipartite graphs, balanced Hall-type bipartite graphs, complete bipartite graphs with three, four, and five colours, and a non-Hall bipartite example.

Stacking and clearing in graph pebbling
Suppose that pebbles are distributed on the vertices of a graph G. A pebbling step along an edge uv removes two pebbles from u and places one pebble on v. We introduce two new graph parameters: stack(G): the least integer t such that every configuration with t pebbles can be transformed, by a finite sequence of pebbling steps, into a configuration with all pebbles on a single vertex. clear(G): defined analogously, but requiring that from every configuration with t pebbles, all but one pebble can be removed. We prove that stack(G) is defined exactly for connected graphs, and that clear(G) is defined exactly for connected non-bipartite graphs. We also establish general upper bounds for these parameters; in particular, stack(G), clear(G) <= 2 |V(G)| 2^diam(G), where diam(G) denotes the diameter of G. Among our exact results are the equalities stack(K_n) = clear(K_n) = n + 1, stack(K_{m,n}) = 3 max{m,n} + 1, stack(P_n) = 2^n - 1. We also establish general lower bounds in terms of the independence number and odd closed walks. For cycles, the situation is more delicate. We prove the lower bounds stack(C_{2n}) >= 2^{n+1} - 1, clear(C_{2n+1}) >= 3 * 2^n - 2, and formulate the Almost Stacked Hypothesis, motivated by Sjostrand's cover pebbling theorem. Assuming this hypothesis, we obtain stack(C_{2n}) = 2^{n+1} - 1, clear(C_{2n+1}) = 3 * 2^n - 2. At present, we do not have a conjecture for the exact value of stack(C_{2n+1}). Finally, computational evidence leads us to a conjectural closed formula for the stacking number of a tree in terms of the distances and degrees of the vertices relative to a chosen root.

Odd and even cycle lengths, minimum degree and chromatic number in graphs
In this paper, we prove similar results for odd and even cycle lengths. Let $L_o(G)$ denote the set of odd cycle lengths of $G$ and $\ell_o(G)$ denote the longest odd cycle length. In 1992, Gyárfás proved that $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+2$, and if $w(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+1$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+1$. We first prove that if $G$ is a 2-connected non-bipartite graph with $δ(G)\geq 2k$, then $|L_o(G)|\geq k$. Moreover, if $|L_o(G)|=k$, then $2|L_o(G)|+1=\ell_o(G)$, and either $K_{2k+1}\subseteq G$ or $χ(G)\leq 2k$. Applying this result, we prove that if $w(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|$ for $|L_o(G)|\geq 2$, improving the result of Gyárfás. We also construct a class of graphs with $w(G)=2|L_o(G)|-1$ but $χ(G)=2|L_o(G)|$ for every $|L_o(G)|\geq 2$. Using our result, we give a short proof of a similar result of $χ(G)$ and $\ell_o(G)$ proved by Kenkre and Vishwanathan. Our second part is about even cycle lengths. Let $L_e(G)$ denote the set of even cycle lengths of $G$ and $\ell_e(G)$ denote the longest even cycle length. In 2004, Mihók and Schiermeyer proved that $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+3$, and if $w(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+2$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+2$. We first prove that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph with $δ(G)\geq 2k+1$, then $|L_e(G)|\geq k$. Moreover, if $|L_e(G)|=k$, then $2|L_e(G)|+2=\ell_e(G)$, and either $K_{2k+2}\subseteq G$ or $χ(G)\leq 2k+1$. Applying this result, we prove that if $w(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+1$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+1$ for $|L_e(G)|\geq 2$, improving the result of Mihók and Schiermeyer. We also construct a class of graphs with $w(G)=2|L_e(G)|$ but $χ(G)=2|L_e(G)|+1$ for every $|L_e(G)|\geq 2$. Our result can deduce a similar result of $χ(G)$ and $\ell_e(G)$. The above results also improve some results of consecutive odd or even cycle lengths.

Abelian groups with 3-chromatic Cayley graphs
Let $G$ be an abelian group. The main theorem of this paper asserts that there exists a Cayley graph on $G$ with chromatic number 3 if and only if $G$ is not of exponent 1, 2, or 4. Although motivated by ideas from algebraic topology, our proof may be expressed purely combinatorially. As a by-product, we derive a topological result which is of independent interest. Suppose $X$ is a connected non-bipartite graph, and let $\mathcal N(X)$ denote its neighborhood complex. We show that if the fundamental group $π_1(\mathcal N(X))$ or first homology group $H_1(\mathcal N(X))$ is torsion, then the chromatic number of $X$ is at least 4. This strengthens a classical result of Lovász, which derives the same conclusion if $π_1(\mathcal N(X))$ is trivial.

A strengthening on consecutive odd cycles in graphs of given minimum degree
Liu and Ma [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2018] conjectured that every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $\lceil k/2\rceil $ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. In particular, they showed that this conjecture holds when $k$ is even. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for any $k\in \mathbb N$. Moreover, we also improve some previous results about cycles of consecutive lengths.

Stability of graph pairs involving cycles
A graph pair $(Γ, Σ)$ is called stable if $\aut(Γ)\times\aut(Σ)$ is isomorphic to $\aut(Γ\timesΣ)$ and unstable otherwise, where $Γ\timesΣ$ is the direct product of $Γ$ and $Σ$. A graph is called $R$-thin if distinct vertices have different neighbourhoods. $Γ$ and $Σ$ are said to be coprime if there is no nontrivial graph $Δ$ such that $Γ\cong Γ_1 \times Δ$ and $Σ\cong Σ_1 \times Δ$ for some graphs $Γ_1$ and $Σ_1$. An unstable graph pair $(Γ, Σ)$ is called nontrivially unstable if $Γ$ and $Σ$ are $R$-thin connected coprime graphs and at least one of them is non-bipartite. This paper contributes to the study of the stability of graph pairs with a focus on the case when $Σ= C_n$ is a cycle. We give two sufficient conditions for $(Γ, C_n)$ to be nontrivially unstable, where $n \ne 4$ and $Γ$ is an $R$-thin connected graph. In the case when $Γ$ is an $R$-thin connected non-bipartite graph, we obtain the following results: (i) if $(Γ, K_2)$ is unstable, then $(Γ, C_{n})$ is unstable for every even integer $n \geq 4$; (ii) if an even integer $n \ge 6$ is compatible with $Γ$ in some sense, then $(Γ, C_{n})$ is nontrivially unstable if and only if $(Γ, K_2)$ is unstable; (iii) if there is an even integer $n \ge 6$ compatible with $Γ$ such that $(Γ, C_{n})$ is nontrivially unstable, then $(Γ, C_{m})$ is unstable for all even integers $m \ge 6$. We also prove that if $Γ$ is an $R$-thin connected graph and $n \ge 3$ is an odd integer compatible with $Γ$, then $(Γ, C_{n})$ is stable.

Decreasing behavior of the depth functions of edge ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $I$ be the edge ideal of a connected non-bipartite graph and $R$ the base polynomial ring. Then $\operatorname{depth} R/I \ge 1$ and $\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 0$ for $t \gg 1$. We give combinatorial conditions for $\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 1$ for some $t$ in between and show that the depth function is non-increasing thereafter. Especially, the depth function quickly decreases to 0 after reaching 1. We show that if $\operatorname{depth} R/I = 1$ then $\operatorname{depth} R/I^2 = 0$ and if $\operatorname{depth} R/I^2 = 1$ then $\operatorname{depth} R/I^5 = 0$. Other similar results suggest that if $\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 1$ then $\operatorname{depth} R/I^{t+3} = 0$. This a surprising phenomenon because the depth of a power can determine a smaller depth of another power. Furthermore, we are able to give a simple combinatorial criterion for $\operatorname{depth} R/I^{(t)} = 1$ for $t \gg 1$ and show that the condition $\operatorname{depth} R/I^{(t)} = 1$ is persistent, where $I^{(t)}$ denotes the $t$-th symbolic powers of $I$.

A duality theorem for the ic-resurgence of edge ideals
Published in European J. Combin. 109 (2023), paper no. 103656, 18 pp • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this work is to use linear programming and polyhedral geometry to prove a duality formula for the ic-resurgence of edge ideals. We show that the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I$ of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ and the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I^\vee$ of the blocker $\mathcal{C}^\vee$ of $\mathcal{C}$ coincide. If $\mathcal{C}$ is the clutter of bases of certain uniform matroids, we recover a formula for the resurgence of $I$, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is a connected non-bipartite graph with a perfect matching, we show a formula for the Waldschmidt constant of $I^\vee$.

Counting critical subgraphs in $k$-critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gallai asked in 1984 if any $k$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $n$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. The answer is trivial for $k\leq 3$. Improving a result of Stiebitz, Abbott and Zhou proved in 1995 that for all $k\geq 4$, such graph contains $Ω(n^{1/(k-1)})$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. Since then no progress had been made until very recently, Hare resolved the case $k=4$ by showing that any $4$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $(8n-29)/3$ odd cycles. In this paper, we mainly focus on 4-critical graphs and develop some novel tools for counting cycles of specified parity. Our main result shows that any $4$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains $Ω(n^2)$ odd cycles, which is tight up to a constant factor by infinite many graphs. As a crucial step, we prove the same bound for 3-connected non-bipartite graphs, which may be of independent interest. Using the tools, we also give a very short proof for the case $k=4$. Moreover, we improve the longstanding lower bound of Abbott and Zhou to $Ω(n^{1/(k-2)})$ for the general case $k\geq 5$. We will also discuss some related problems on $k$-critical graphs in the final section.

A unified proof of conjectures on cycle lengths in graphs
In this paper, we prove a tight minimum degree condition in general graphs for the existence of paths between two given endpoints, whose lengths form a long arithmetic progression with common difference one or two. This allows us to obtain a number of exact and optimal results on cycle lengths in graphs of given minimum degree, connectivity or chromatic number. More precisely, we prove the following statements by a unified approach. (1) Every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all even lengths modulo $k$; in addition, if $G$ is 2-connected and non-bipartite, then it contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. (2) For all $k\geq 3$, every $k$-connected graph contains a cycle of length zero modulo $k$. (3) Every 3-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. (4) Every graph with chromatic number at least $k+2$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. The first statement is a conjecture of Thomassen, the second is a conjecture of Dean, the third is a tight answer to a question of Bondy and Vince, and the fourth is a conjecture of Sudakov and Verstraëte. All of the above results are best possible.

Minimum degree conditions for the existence of cycles of all lengths modulo $k$ in graphs
Thomassen, in 1983, conjectured that for a positive integer $k$, every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph of minimum degree at least $k + 1$ contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. In this paper, we settle this conjecture affirmatively.

Cycle lengths and minimum degree of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been extensive research on cycle lengths in graphs with large minimum degree. In this paper, we obtain several new and tight results in this area. Let $G$ be a graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$. We prove that if $G$ is bipartite, then there are $k$ cycles in $G$ whose lengths form an arithmetic progression with common difference two. For general graph $G$, we show that $G$ contains $\lfloor k/2\rfloor$ cycles with consecutive even lengths and $k-3$ cycles whose lengths form an arithmetic progression with common difference one or two. In addition, if $G$ is 2-connected and non-bipartite, then $G$ contains $\lfloor k/2\rfloor$ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. Thomassen (1983) made two conjectures on cycle lengths modulo a fixed integer $k$: (1) every graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all even lengths modulo $k$; (2) every 2-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. These two conjectures, if true, are best possible. Our results confirm both conjectures when $k$ is even. And when $k$ is odd, we show that minimum degree at least $k+4$ suffices. This improves all previous results in this direction. Moreover, our results derive new upper bounds of the chromatic number in terms of the longest sequence of cycles with consecutive (even or odd) lengths.

In this paper we determine the graph whose least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian attains the minimum or maximum among all connected non-bipartite graphs of fixed order and given number of pendant vertices. Thus we obtain a lower bound and an upper bound for the least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian of a graph in terms of the number of pendent vertices.
