Spread Methods for Induced Cycles
We develop a spread-based approach to finding induced cycles and apply it to two problems. First, we resolve the odd-hole gadget conjecture of Bradač, Draganić and Sudakov by constructing an $e^{O(k)}$-edge graph whose every $k$-edge-colouring contains a monochromatic induced odd cycle of length $O(\log k)$. As a consequence, for every $k\ge2$ and every sufficiently large odd $n$, \[ \widehat R_{\mathrm{ind}}(C_n;k)=e^{Θ(k)}n. \] The proof uses spread probability weights together with hypergraph containers. Second, we prove that for every sufficiently large fixed $d$, with high probability the largest hole in the random $d$-regular graph $G_{n,d}$ has order $Θ(n\log d/d)$, resolving a problem of Frieze. Although the two proofs use different mechanisms, both begin with a well-distributed auxiliary object and use it to control the extra edges that could destroy inducedness.
The Multicolour Size--Ramsey Number of an Even Cycle
We determine the $k$-colour size--Ramsey number of even cycles up to absolute constant factors. For every $k\ge2$ and every even $n\ge100\log k$, \[ \widehat R_k(C_n)=Θ(k^2\log k)n. \] The lower bound follows from the corresponding result of Beke, Li and Sahasrabudhe for paths, while our upper bound improves the previous best estimate $O(k^{34}n)$ of Javadi, Kohayakawa and Miralaei.
Clique-saturating non-edges throughout the Turán range
For an $F$-free graph $G$, a non-edge is $F$-saturating if adding it to $G$ creates a copy of $F$. We denote by $f_{p+1}(n,m)$ the minimum number of $K_{p+1}$-saturating non-edges in a $K_{p+1}$-free $n$-vertex graph with $m$ edges. Erdős and Tuza conjectured that $f_4\left(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)+ 1\right)= (1 + o(1)) \frac{n^2}{16}$. Balogh and Liu (JCTB, 2014) disproved this conjecture and determined the asymptotic value of $f_4(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)+1)$. He, Ma, Ma and Ye (JCTB, 2023) later determined $f_{p+1}(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1)$ asymptotically for every $p\ge 3$, and asked for the value of $f_{p+1}(n,m)$ for all $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_{p+1})$ and every $p\ge 3$. In this paper, we answer their question asymptotically for all $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_{p+1})$ and every $p\ge 3$. We also determine the exact value of $f_3(n,m)$ for all $0\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)$ by a different method.
Two-block cycles and chromatic number of Hamiltonian digraphs
Let $k$ and $\ell$ be positive integers. The family $C(k,\ell)$ consists of all digraphs obtained from two internally vertex-disjoint directed paths of lengths at least $k$ and $\ell$, respectively, and identifying their initial vertices and their terminal vertices. Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé (JCT-B, 2007) asked whether, for any positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ with $k+\ell \ge 4$, the chromatic number $χ(D)$ is at most $k+\ell-1$ for every $C(k,\ell)$-free strongly connected digraph $D$. Let $D$ be a $C(k,\ell)$-free Hamiltonian digraph. Kim, Kim, Ma and Park (JGT, 2018) showed that $χ(D) \le k+\ell$ and the bound is attained when $k+\ell=5$. In this paper, we prove that $χ(D) \le k+\ell-1$ for $k+\ell\ge 6$ and this bound is best possible for all $k+\ell\geq 6$, which resolves the problem posed by Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé for Hamiltonian digraphs.
A note on long nontrivial cycle in Hamiltonian graphs
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph containing a Hamiltonian cycle and with minimum degree at least $3$. Girão, Kittipassorn and Narayanan (Israel J. Math., 2019) proved that $G$ contains another cycle of length at least $n-O(n^{4/5})$. In this paper, we improve their bound to $n-O(n^{2/3})$. Our proof is combined with a constructive method, which is based on a poset result, and a nonconstructive method. And the bound is best possible under these two methods.
The maximum number of cycles of a given length in a nonhamiltonian graph
In 2026, Li and Zhan characterized the nonhamiltonian graphs of order $n$ with the maximum number of paths of length $k$, where $n$ and $k$ are integers satisfying $1\leq k\leq n-1$. This work solves and generalizes a problem proposed by Erdős in 1980. In this paper, we further determine the nonhamiltonian graphs of order $n$ attaining the maximum number of cycles of length $k$ for given integers $n$ and $k$ with $3\leq k\leq n-1$.
New results on proper orientation number of graphs
A proper orientation $D$ of an undirected graph $G$ is an orientation of $G$ such that $d_D^+(u)\not=d_D^+(v)$ for any edge $uv\in E(G)$. Denote the proper orientation number $\vecχ(G)$ of an undirected graph $G$ as the minimum $Δ^+(D)$ among all proper orientations $D$ of $G$. Chen, Mohar and Wu (JCTB, 2023) proved that if $G$ is a $r$-partite graph, then $\vecχ(G) \leq \frac{1}{2} \text{Mad}(G)+O(\frac{r\log{r}}{\log{\log{r}}})$, where $\text{Mad}(G)$ is the maximum average degree of $G$. Moreover, if $G$ is a bipartite graph, then $ \vecχ(G) \leq \lceil \frac{1}{2} \text{Mad}(G)\rceil +3$, and this bound is tight. They also asked whether $\vecχ(G)-\lceil \frac{1}{2} \text{Mad}(G)\rceil$ can be bounded by a linear function of $r$. In this paper, we prove that $ \vecχ(G) \leq\lceil \frac{1}{2} \text{Mad}(G)\rceil +7$ for every 3-partite graph $G$. As a corollary, we also improve Chen, Mohar and Wu's bounds for the 3-colorable planar graphs and the outerplanar graphs. Our proof use the notion of potential out-degree and weighted matching lemma with special weighted functions. We also construct a class of $r$-partite graphs with $\vecχ(G)\geq\lceil \frac{1}{2} \text{Mad}(G)\rceil +r+1$ to be the possible extremal graphs.
Odd and even cycle lengths, minimum degree and chromatic number in graphs
In this paper, we prove similar results for odd and even cycle lengths. Let $L_o(G)$ denote the set of odd cycle lengths of $G$ and $\ell_o(G)$ denote the longest odd cycle length. In 1992, Gyárfás proved that $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+2$, and if $w(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+1$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|+1$. We first prove that if $G$ is a 2-connected non-bipartite graph with $δ(G)\geq 2k$, then $|L_o(G)|\geq k$. Moreover, if $|L_o(G)|=k$, then $2|L_o(G)|+1=\ell_o(G)$, and either $K_{2k+1}\subseteq G$ or $χ(G)\leq 2k$. Applying this result, we prove that if $w(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_o(G)|$ for $|L_o(G)|\geq 2$, improving the result of Gyárfás. We also construct a class of graphs with $w(G)=2|L_o(G)|-1$ but $χ(G)=2|L_o(G)|$ for every $|L_o(G)|\geq 2$. Using our result, we give a short proof of a similar result of $χ(G)$ and $\ell_o(G)$ proved by Kenkre and Vishwanathan.
Our second part is about even cycle lengths. Let $L_e(G)$ denote the set of even cycle lengths of $G$ and $\ell_e(G)$ denote the longest even cycle length. In 2004, Mihók and Schiermeyer proved that $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+3$, and if $w(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+2$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+2$. We first prove that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph with $δ(G)\geq 2k+1$, then $|L_e(G)|\geq k$. Moreover, if $|L_e(G)|=k$, then $2|L_e(G)|+2=\ell_e(G)$, and either $K_{2k+2}\subseteq G$ or $χ(G)\leq 2k+1$. Applying this result, we prove that if $w(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+1$, then $χ(G)\leq 2|L_e(G)|+1$ for $|L_e(G)|\geq 2$, improving the result of Mihók and Schiermeyer. We also construct a class of graphs with $w(G)=2|L_e(G)|$ but $χ(G)=2|L_e(G)|+1$ for every $|L_e(G)|\geq 2$. Our result can deduce a similar result of $χ(G)$ and $\ell_e(G)$.
The above results also improve some results of consecutive odd or even cycle lengths.
Oriented diameter of graphs with given domination number
Let $G$ be a connected bridgeless graph with domination number $γ$. The oriented diameter (strong diameter) of $G$ is the smallest integer $d$ for which $G$ admits a strong orientation with diameter (strong diameter) $d$. Kurz and Lätsch (2012) conjectured the oriented diameter of $G$ is at most $\lceil \frac{7γ+1}{2}\rceil$ and the bound is sharp. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture by induction on $γ$ through contracting an unavoidable alternative subgraph, which holds potential for future applications. Moreover, we show the oriented strong diameter of $G$ is at most $7γ-1$ by using the same recursive structure, and the bound is best possible.
Turán problems for suspension of a balanced tree
The Turán number $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph can have. The suspension $\widehat{H}$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex which is adjacent to all vertices of $H$ and a tree is balanced if the sizes of its two color classes differ at most $1$. In this paper, we obtain a sharp bound of $\ex(n,\widehat{T})$ when $n\ge 4(4k)^6$ based on the Erdős-Sós conjecture. We also show the bound is sharp for infinitely many $n$ and characterize all extremal graphs. In particular, if $T$ satisfies some conditions such as $T$ contains a matching covering all vertices in one color class, then the bound is sharp for all $n$. This is a new class of graphs whose decomposition family does not contain a linear forest but we still can determine its Turán number.
Improved bound on the number of edges of diameter-$k$-critical graphs
A graph is diameter-$k$-critical if its diameter equals $k$ and the deletion of any edge increases its diameter. The Murty-Simon Conjecture states that for any diameter-2-critical graph $G$ of order $n$, $e(G) \leq \lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$, with equality if and only if $G \cong K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil}$. Füredi (JGT,1992) proved that this conjecture is true for sufficiently large $n$. Over two decades later, Loh and Ma (JCT-B, 2016) proved that $e(G) \leq \frac{n^2}{6}+o(n^2)$ for diameter-3-critical graphs $G$, and
$e(G) \leq \frac{3n^2}{k}$ for diameter-$k$-critical graphs $G$ with $k \geq 4$. In this paper, we improve the bound for diameter-$k$-critical graphs to $ \frac{n^2}{2k}+o(n^2)$.
