Ribbon blocks for centraliser algebras of symmetric groups
Suppose $l,m$ are natural numbers with $l\le m$, and $\mathbb{F}$ a field of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathcal{C}_{l,m}^{\mathbb{F}}$ denote the centraliser of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}S_l$ inside $\mathbb{F}S_m$. Ellers and Murray give a conjectured classification of the blocks of $\mathcal{C}_{l,m}^{\mathbb{F}}$, in terms of the $p$-blocks of $S_l$ and $S_m$. We prove this conjecture for a family of blocks that we call ribbon blocks and belt blocks. These are the blocks containing Specht modules labelled by skew partitions having no repeated entries in their $p$-content.

Crystals, regularisation and the Mullineux map
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Mullineux map is a combinatorial function on partitions which describes the effect of tensoring a simple module for the symmetric group in characteristic $p$ with the one-dimensional sign representation. It can also be interpreted as an isomorphism between crystal graphs for $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_p$. We give a new combinatorial description of the Mullineux map by expressing this crystal isomorphism as a composition of isomorphisms between different crystals. These isomorphisms are defined in terms of new generalised regularisation maps introduced by Millan Berdasco. We then given two applications of our new realisation of the Mullineux map, by providing purely combinatorial proofs of a conjecture of Lyle relating the Mullineux map with regularisation, and a theorem of Paget describing the Mullineux map in RoCK blocks of symmetric groups.

Minimal partitions with a given $s$-core and $t$-core
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $s$ and $t$ are coprime positive integers, and let $σ$ be an $s$-core partition and $τ$ a $t$-core partition. In this paper we consider the set $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ of partitions of $n$ with $s$-core $σ$ and $t$-core $τ$. We find the smallest $n$ for which this set is non-empty, and show that for this value of $n$ the partitions in $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ (which we call $(σ,τ)$-minimal partitions) are in bijection with a certain class of $(0,1)$-matrices with $s$ rows and $t$ columns. We then use these results in considering conjugate partitions: we determine exactly when the set $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ consists of a conjugate pair of partitions, and when $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ contains a unique self-conjugate partition.

Irreducible projective representations of the alternating group which remain irreducible in characteristic 2
Published in Adv. Math. 347 (2020) 107340 • View PublicationBIB
For any finite group G it is an interesting question to ask which ordinary irreducible representations of G remain irreducible in a given characteristic p. We answer this question for p=2 when G is the proper double cover of the alternating group. As a key ingredient in the proof, we prove a formula for the decomposition numbers in Rouquier blocks of double covers of symmetric groups, in terms of Schur P-functions.

A note on Kostka numbers
We give an elementary proof of a well-known result on Kostka numbers, following a question from Mark Wildon on MathOverflow. Namely, we show that given partitions $λ,μ,ν$ of $n$ with $μ\trianglerighteqν$, we have $K_{λν}\geqslant K_{λμ}$.

2-chains: an interesting family of posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new family of finite posets which we call 2-chains. These first arose in the study of 0-Hecke algebras, but they admit a variety of different characterisations. We give these characterisations, prove that they are equivalent and derive some numerical results concerning 2-chains.

Simultaneous core multipartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of simultaneous core multipartitions, generalising simultaneous core partitions, which have been studied extensively in the recent literature. Given a multipartition datum (s|c), which consists of a non-negative integer s and an l-tuple c of integers, we introduce the notion of an (s|c)-core multipartition. Given an arbitrary set of multicore data, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the corresponding set of simultaneous core multipartitions to be finite. We then study the special case of simultaneous core bipartitions, giving exact enumerative results in some special subcases.

$(s,t)$-cores: a weighted version of Armstrong's conjecture
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 23 (2016) #P4.32 • View PublicationBIB
The study of core partitions has been very active in recent years, with the study of $(s,t)$-cores - partitions which are both $s$- and $t$-cores - playing a prominent role. A conjecture of Armstrong, proved recently by Johnson, says that the average size of an $(s,t)$-core, when $s$ and $t$ are coprime positive integers, is $\frac1{24}(s-1)(t-1)(s+t-1)$. Armstrong also conjectured that the same formula gives the average size of a self-conjugate $(s,t)$-core; this was proved by Chen, Huang and Wang. In the present paper, we develop the ideas from the author's paper [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1525-1539] studying actions of affine symmetric groups on the set of $s$-cores in order to give variants of Armstrong's conjectures in which each $(s,t)$-core is weighted by the reciprocal of the order of its stabiliser under a certain group action. Informally, this weighted average gives the expected size of the $t$-core of a random $s$-core.

Dyck tilings and the homogeneous Garnir relations for graded Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $λ$ and $μ$ are integer partitions with $λ\supseteqμ$. Kenyon and Wilson have introduced the notion of a cover-inclusive Dyck tiling of the skew Young diagram $λ\setminusμ$, which has applications in the study of double-dimer models. We examine these tilings in more detail, giving various equivalent conditions and then proving a recurrence which we use to show that the entries of the transition matrix between two bases for a certain permutation module for the symmetric group are given by counting cover-inclusive Dyck tilings. We go on to consider the inverse of this matrix, showing that its entries are determined by what we call cover-expansive Dyck tilings. The fact that these two matrices are mutual inverses allows us to recover the main result of Kenyon and Wilson. We then discuss the connections with recent results of Kim et al, who give, a simple expression for the sum, over all $μ$, of the number of cover-inclusive Dyck tilings of $λ\setminusμ$. Our results provide a new proof of this result. Finally, we show how to use our results to obtain simpler expressions for the homogeneous Garnir relations for the universal Specht modules introduced by Kleshchev, Mathas and Ram for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras.

A generalisation of core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $s$ and $t$ are coprime natural numbers. A theorem of Olsson says that the $t$-core of an $s$-core partition is again an $s$-core. We generalise this theorem, showing that the $s$-weight of the $t$-core of a partition $λ$ is at most the $s$-weight of $λ$. Then we consider the set $\mathcal C_{s:t}$ of partitions for which equality holds, which we call $[s{:}t]$-cores; this set has interesting structure, and we expect that it will be the subject of future study. We show that the set of $[s{:}t]$-cores is a union of finitely many orbits for an action of a Coxeter group of type $\tilde A_{s-1}\times\tilde A_{t-1}$ on the set of partitions. We also consider the problem of constructing an $[s{:}t]$-core with specified $s$-core and $t$-core.

The t-core of an s-core
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1525-1539 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the $t$-core of an $s$-core partition, when $s$ and $t$ are coprime positive integers. Olsson has shown that the $t$-core of an $s$-core is again an $s$-core, and we examine certain actions of the affine symmetric group on $s$-cores which preserve the $t$-core of an $s$-core. Along the way, we give a new proof of Olsson's result. We also give a new proof of a result of Vandehey, showing that there is a simultaneous $s$- and $t$-core which contains all others.

Partition models for the crystal of the basic $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$-module
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 32 (2010) 339-370 • View PublicationBIB
For each $n\geqslant3$, we construct an uncountable family of models of the crystal of the basic $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$-module. These models are all based on partitions, and include the usual $n$-regular and $n$-restricted models, as well as Berg's ladder crystal, as special cases.

Regularisation and the Mullineux map

We classify the pairs of conjugate partitions whose regularisations are images of each other under the Mullineux map. This classification proves a conjecture of Lyle, answering a question of Bessenrodt, Olsson and Xu.

General runner removal and the Mullineux map
Published in J. Algebra 322 (2009) 4331-4367 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a new `runner removal theorem' for $q$-decomposition numbers of the level 1 Fock space of type $A^{(1)}_{e-1}$, generalising earlier theorems of James--Mathas and the author. By combining this with another theorem relating to the Mullineux map, we show that the problem of finding all $q$-decomposition numbers indexed by partitions of a given weight is a finite computation.

Core blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras II: the weight of a core block
We study combinatorial blocks of multipartitions, exploring further the notions of weight, hub and core block introduced by the author in earlier papers. We answer the question of which pairs (w,theta) occur as the weight and hub of a block, and we examine the action of the affine Weyl group on the set of blocks.
