Explicit monomial expansions of the generating series for connection coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the explicit computation of generating series for the connection coefficients of two commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the class algebra and the double coset algebra. As shown by Hanlon, Stanley and Stembridge (1992), these series gives the spectral distribution of some random matrices that are of interest to statisticians. Morales and Vassilieva (2009, 2011) found explicit formulas for these generating series in terms of monomial symmetric functions by introducing a bijection between partitioned hypermaps on (locally) orientable surfaces and some decorated forests and trees. Thanks to purely algebraic means, we recover the formula for the class algebra and provide a new simpler formula for the double coset algebra. As a salient ingredient, we derive a new explicit expression for zonal polynomials indexed by partitions of type [a,b,1^(n-a-b)].

The first term of plethysms
Plethysm of two Schur functions can be expressed as a linear combination of Schur functions, and monomial symmetric functions. In this paper, we express the coefficients combinatorially in the case of monomial symmetric functions. And by using it, we determine the first term of the plethysm with respect to Schur functions under the reverse lexicographic order.
Bijective evaluation of the connection coefficients of the double coset algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the evaluation of the generating series of the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this series, indexed by a partition $ν$, gives the spectral distribution of some random real matrices that are of interest in random matrix theory. We provide an explicit evaluation of this series when $ν=(n)$ in terms of monomial symmetric functions. Our development relies on an interpretation of the connection coefficients in terms of locally orientable hypermaps and a new bijective construction between locally orientable partitioned hypermaps and some permuted forests.
A Bijection between Atomic Partitions and Unsplitable Partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2011) #P7 • View PublicationBIB
In the study of the algebra $\mathrm{NCSym}$ of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables, Bergeron and Zabrocki found a free generating set consisting of power sum symmetric functions indexed by atomic partitions. On the other hand, Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki studied another free generating set of $\mathrm{NCSym}$ consisting of monomial symmetric functions indexed by unsplitable partitions. Can and Sagan raised the question of finding a bijection between atomic partitions and unsplitable partitions. In this paper, we provide such a bijection.

Jucys-Murphy Elements and Unitary Matrix Integrals
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices (2013), no. 2, 362--397 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the relationship between polynomial integrals on the unitary group and the conjugacy class expansion of symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements. Our main result is an explicit formula for the top coefficients in the class expansion of monomial symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements, from which we recover the first order asymptotics of polynomial integrals over $\U(N)$ as $N \rightarrow \infty$. Our results on class expansion include an analogue of Macdonald's result for the top connection coefficients of the class algebra, a generalization of Stanley and Olshanski's result on the polynomiality of content statistics on Plancherel-random partitions, and an exact formula for the multiplicity of the class of full cycles in the expansion of a complete symmetric function in Jucys-Murphy elements. The latter leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of the Carlitz-Riordan central factorial numbers.

A remark on Frobenius characters for set representations of symmetric groups
For any set representation (permutation representation) of the symmetric group $S_n$, we give combinatorial interpretation for coefficients of its Frobenius character expanded in the basis of monomial symmetric functions.

Noncommutative Analogs of Monomial Symmetric Functions, Cauchy Identity, and Hall Scalar Product
This paper introduces noncommutative analogs of monomial symmetric functions and fundamental noncommutative symmetric functions. The expansion of ribbon Schur functions in both of these basis is nonnegative. With these functions at hand, one can derive a noncommutative Cauchy identity as well as study a noncommutative scalar product implied by Cauchy identity. This scalar product seems be the noncommutative analog of Hall scalar product in the commutative theory.

Monomial bases for the centres of the group algebra and Iwahori--Hecke algebra of S_4
G. E. Murphy showed in 1983 that the centre of every symmetric group algebra has an integral basis consisting of a specific set of monomial symmetric polynomials in the Jucys--Murphy elements. While we have shown in earlier work that the centre of the group algebra of S_3 has exactly three additional such bases, we show in this paper that the centre of the group algebra of S_4 has infinitely many bases consisting of monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements, which we characterize completely. The proof of this result involves establishing closed forms for coefficients of class sums in the monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements, and solving several resulting exponential Diophantine equations with the aid of a computer. Our initial motivation was in finding integral bases for the centre of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra, and we address this question also, by finding several integral bases of monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements for the centre of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra of S_4.

A new integral basis for the centre of the Hecke algebra of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a recursive algorithm that produces an integral basis for the centre of the Hecke algebra of type A consisting of linear combinations of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements. We also discuss the existence of integral bases for the centre of the Hecke algebra that consist solely of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements. Finally, for n=3, we show that only one such basis exists for the centre of the Hecke algebra, by proving that there are exactly four bases for the centre of the corresponding symmetric group algebra which consist solely of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements.
On distinguishing trees by their chromatic symmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 115 (2008), pp. 237-253 • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be an unrooted tree. The \emph{chromatic symmetric function} $X_T$, introduced by Stanley, is a sum of monomial symmetric functions corresponding to proper colorings of $T$. The \emph{subtree polynomial} $S_T$, first considered under a different name by Chaudhary and Gordon, is the bivariate generating function for subtrees of $T$ by their numbers of edges and leaves. We prove that $S_T = <Φ,X_T>$, where $<\cdot,\cdot>$ is the Hall inner product on symmetric functions and $Φ$ is a certain symmetric function that does not depend on $T$. Thus the chromatic symmetric function is a stronger isomorphism invariant than the subtree polynomial. As a corollary, the path and degree sequences of a tree can be obtained from its chromatic symmetric function. As another application, we exhibit two infinite families of trees (\emph{spiders} and some \emph{caterpillars}), and one family of unicyclic graphs (\emph{squids}) whose members are determined completely by their chromatic symmetric functions.
Classical symmetric functions in superspace
Published in J Algebr Comb 24 (2006) 209--238 • View PublicationBIB
We present the basic elements of a generalization of symmetric function theory involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. In this work, we present the superspace extension of the classical bases, namely, the monomial symmetric functions, the elementary symmetric functions, the completely symmetric functions, and the power sums. Various basic results, such as the generating functions for the multiplicative bases, Cauchy formulas, involution operations as well as the combinatorial scalar product are also generalized.

Galleries, Hall-Littlewood polynomials and structure constants of the spherical Hecke algebra
Published in IMRN, Volume 2006 (2006) • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial description of the coefficients appearing in the expansion of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in terms of monomial symmetric functions. We also give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Hall-Littlewood polynomials. For proving this we use galleries to calculate Satake coefficients and structure constants of spherical Hecke algebras with arbitrary parameters.

Bottom Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a basis for the space V spanned by the lowest degree part \hat{s}_λof the expansion of the Schur symmetric functions s_λin terms of power sums, where we define the degree of the power sum p_i to be 1. In particular, the dimension of the subspace V_n spanned by those \hat{s}_λfor which λis a partition of n is equal to the number of partitions of n whose parts differ by at least 2. We also show that a symmetric function closely related to \hat{s}_λhas the same coefficients when expanded in terms of power sums or augmented monomial symmetric functions. Proofs are based on the theory of minimal border strip decompositions of Young diagrams.

Une q - spécialisation pour les fonctions symétriques monomiales
Published in Advances in Math., 162 (2001), 217-242 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the specialization of monomial symmetric functions on the alphabet (a-b)/(1-q). This gives a remarkable algebraic identity, and four new developments for the Macdonald polynomial associated with a row. The proofs are given in the framework of $λ$-ring theory.
