Symmetric functions in superspace: a compendium of results and open problems (including a SageMath worksheet)
We present a review of the most important results in the theory of symmetric functions in superspace (or symmetric superpolynomials), summarizing all principal contributions since its introduction in 2001 in the context of the supersymmetric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland integrable model. We also mention some open problems which remain unanswered at this moment, in particular the connection with representation theory. In addition, we provide a free open access source code, relying on SageMath library, that can be used as a research tool for symmetric superpolynomials. The content is directed to an audience new to this research area, but who is familiar with the classical theory of symmetric functions.

We derive new fermionic expressions for the characters of the Virasoro minimal models $M(k,2k\pm1)$ by analysing the recently introduced half-lattice paths. These fermionic expressions display a quasiparticle formulation characteristic of the $φ_{2,1}$ and $φ_{1,5}$ integrable perturbations. We find that they arise by imposing a simple restriction on the RSOS quasiparticle states of the unitary models $M(p,p+1)$. In fact, four fermionic expressions are obtained for each generating function of half-lattice paths of finite length $L$, and these lead to four distinct expressions for most characters $χ^{k,2k\pm1}_{r,s}$. These are direct analogues of Melzer's expressions for $M(p,p+1)$, and their proof entails revisiting, reworking and refining a proof of Melzer's identities which used combinatorial transforms on lattice paths.
We also derive a bosonic version of the generating functions of length $L$ half-lattice paths, this expression being notable in that it involves $q$-trinomial coefficients. Taking the $L\to\infty$ limit shows that the generating functions for infinite length half-lattice paths are indeed the Virasoro characters $χ^{k,2k\pm1}_{r,s}$.

Schur superpolynomials have been introduced recently as limiting cases of the Macdonald superpolynomials. It turns out that there are two natural super-extensions of the Schur polynomials: in the limit $q=t=0$ and $q=t\rightarrow\infty$, corresponding respectively to the Schur superpolynomials and their dual. However, a direct definition is missing. Here, we present a conjectural combinatorial definition for both of them, each being formulated in terms of a distinct extension of semi-standard tableaux. These two formulations are linked by another conjectural result, the Pieri rule for the Schur superpolynomials. Indeed, and this is an interesting novelty of the super case, the successive insertions of rows governed by this Pieri rule do not generate the tableaux underlying the Schur superpolynomials combinatorial construction, but rather those pertaining to their dual versions. As an aside, we present various extensions of the Schur bilinear identity.

The Jack polynomials P_λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible partitions are known to span an ideal I^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric functions in N variables. The ideal I^{(k,r)}_N is invariant under the action of certain differential operators which include half the Virasoro algebra. Moreover, the Jack polynomials in I^{(k,r)}_N admit clusters of size at most k: they vanish when k+1 of their variables are identified, and they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. We generalize most of these properties to superspace using orthogonal eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model known as Jack superpolynomials. In particular, we show that the Jack superpolynomials P_Λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible superpartitions span an ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric polynomials in N commuting variables and N anticommuting variables. We prove that the ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N is stable with respect to the action of the negative-half of the super-Virasoro algebra. In addition, we show that the Jack superpolynomials in {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N vanish when k+1 of their commuting variables are equal, and conjecture that they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. This allows us to conclude that the standard Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry should satisfy similar clustering properties. Finally, we conjecture that the elements of {\mathcal I}^{(k,2)}_N provide a basis for the subspace of symmetric superpolynomials in N variables that vanish when k+1 commuting variables are set equal to each other.

We first briefly review the role of lattice paths in the derivation of fermionic expressions for the M(p,p') minimal model characters of the Virasoro Lie algebra. We then focus on the recently introduced half-lattice paths for the M(p,2p+/-1) characters, reformulating them in such a way that the two cases may be treated uniformly. That the generating functions of these half-lattice paths are indeed M(p,2p+/-1) characters is proved by describing weight preserving bijections between them and the corresponding RSOS lattice paths. Here, the M(p,2p-1) case is derived for the first time. We then apply the methods of Bressoud and Warnaar to these half-lattice paths to derive fermionic expressions for the Virasoro characters X^{p,2p+/-1}_{1,2} that differ from those obtained from the RSOS paths.
This work is an extension of that presented by the third author at the "7th International Conference on Lattice Path Combinatorics and Applications", Siena, Italy, July 2010.

Two evaluation formulas are derived for the Jack superpolynomials. The evaluation formulas are expressed in terms of products of fillings of skew diagrams. One of these formulas is nothing but the evaluation formula of the Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry, which thereby receives here a remarkably simple formulation. Among the auxiliary results required to establish the evaluation formulas, the determination of the conditions ensuring the non-vanishing coefficients in a Pieri-type rule for Jack superpolynomials is worth pointing out. An important application of the evaluation formulas is a new derivation of the combinatorial norm of the Jack superpolynomials. We finally mention that the introduction of a simpler version of the dominance ordering on superpartitions is fundamental to establish our results.

The Z_k parafermionic conformal field theories, despite the relative complexity of their modes algebra, offer the simplest context for the study of the bases of states and their different combinatorial representations. Three bases are known. The classic one is given by strings of the fundamental parafermionic operators whose sequences of modes are in correspondence with restricted partitions with parts at distance k-1 differing at least by 2. Another basis is expressed in terms of the ordered modes of the k-1 different parafermionic fields, which are in correspondence with the so-called multiple partitions. Both types of partitions have a natural (Bressoud) path representation. Finally, a third basis, formulated in terms of different paths, is inherited from the solution of the restricted solid-on-solid model of Andrews-Baxter-Forrester. The aim of this work is to review, in a unified and pedagogical exposition, these four different combinatorial representations of the states of the Z_k parafermionic models.
The first part of this article presents the different paths and partitions and their bijective relations; it is purely combinatorial, self-contained and elementary; it can be read independently of the conformal-field-theory applications. The second part links this combinatorial analysis with the bases of states of the Z_k parafermionic theories. With the prototypical example of the parafermionic models worked out in detail, this analysis contributes to fix some foundations for the combinatorial study of more complicated theories. Indeed, as we briefly indicate in ending, generalized versions of both the Bressoud and the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester paths emerge naturally in the description of the minimal models.

We present the basic elements of a generalization of symmetric function theory involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. In this work, we present the superspace extension of the classical bases, namely, the monomial symmetric functions, the elementary symmetric functions, the completely symmetric functions, and the power sums. Various basic results, such as the generating functions for the multiplicative bases, Cauchy formulas, involution operations as well as the combinatorial scalar product are also generalized.

Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to a ``combinatorial'' scalar product, are constructed. They are shown to coincide with the Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to an ``analytical'' scalar product, introduced in hep-th/0209074 as eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The results of this article rely on generalizing (to include an extra parameter) the theory of classical symmetric functions in superspace developed recently in math.CO/0509408

Jack superpolynomials are eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the quantum trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland. They are orthogonal with respect to the scalar product, dubbed physical, that is naturally induced by this quantum-mechanical problem. But Jack superpolynomials can also be defined more combinatorially, starting from the multiplicative bases of symmetric superpolynomials, enforcing orthogonality with respect to a one-parameter deformation of the combinatorial scalar product. Both constructions turns out to be equivalent. This provides strong support for the correctness of the various underlying constructions and for the pivotal role of Jack superpolynomials in the theory of symmetric superpolynomials.

We provide explicit formulas for the orthogonal eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the rational Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model with harmonic confinement, i.e., the generalized Hermite (or Hi-Jack) polynomials in superspace. The construction relies on the triangular action of the Hamiltonian on the supermonomial basis. This translates into determinantal expressions for the Hamiltonian's eigenfunctions.
