Spherical complexes
In this paper we define spherical complexes as simplicial complexes with the property that every subcomplex obtained by a sequence of links and deletions either has trivial homology, or has the homology of a sphere. Examples of such complexes are independence complexes of ternary graphs and independence complexes of simplicial forests. We give criteria for when a spherical complex is acyclic, and describe the dimension of the sphere when it is not. We then apply our results to compute the Leray number of these complexes, and define combinatorial invariants for them which are counterparts to algebraic invariants of their Stanley-Reisner rings.
Rigidity of Balanced Minimal Cycle Complexes
A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is balanced if its graph $G(Δ)$ is $d$-colorable. Klee and Novik obtained the balanced lower bound theorem for balanced normal $(d-1)$-pseudomanifolds $Δ$ with $d\geq3$ by showing that the subgraph of $G(Δ)$ induced by the vertices colored in $T$ is rigid in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for any $3$ colors $T$. We show that the same rigidity result, and thus the balanced lower bound theorem, holds for balanced minimal $(d-1)$-cycle complexes with $d \geq 3$. Motivated by the Stanley's work on a colored system of parameters for the Stanley-Reisner ring of balanced simplicial complexes, we further investigate the infinitesimal rigidity of non-generic realization of balanced, and more broadly $\bm{a}$-balanced, simplicial complexes. Among other results, we show that for $d \geq 4$, a balanced homology $(d-1)$-manifold can be realized as an infinitesimally rigid framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that each vertex of color $i$ lies on the $i$th coordinate axis.
Tight complexes are Golod
The Golodness of a simplicial complex is defined algebraically in terms of the Stanley-Reisner ring, and it has been a long-standing problem to find its combinatorial characterization. The tightness of a simplicial complex is a combinatorial analogue of a tight embedding of a manifold into the Euclidean space, and has been studied in connection to minimal manifold triangulations. In this paper, we prove that tight complexes are Golod, and as a corollary, we obtain that for triangulations of closed connected orientable manifolds, the Golodness and the tightness are equivalent.

We study the anisotropy theorem for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial homology spheres in characteristic 2 by Papadakis and Petrotou. This theorem implies the Hard Lefschetz theorem as well as McMullen's g-conjecture for such spheres. Our first result is an explicit description of the quadratic form. We use this description to prove a conjecture stated by Papadakis and Petrotou. All anisotropy theorems for homology spheres and pseudo-manifolds in characteristic 2 follow from this conjecture. Using a specialization argument, we prove anisotropy for certain homology spheres over the field $\mathbb{Q}$. These results provide another self-contained proof of the g-conjecture for homology spheres in characteristic 2.
The first Cotangent Cohomology Module for Matroids
We find a combinatorial formula which computes the first cotangent cohomology module of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids. For arbitrary simplicial complexes we provide upper bounds for the dimensions of the multigraded components of T^1. For specific degrees we prove that these bounds are reached if and only if the simplicial complex is a matroid, obtaining thus a new characterization for matroids. Furthermore, the graded first cotangent cohomology turns out to be a complete invariant for nondiscrete matroids.

We study the deformation theory of the Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cluster complexes for skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras of geometric and finite cluster type. In particular, we show that in the skew-symmetric case, these cluster complexes are unobstructed, generalizing a result of Ilten and Christophersen in the $A_n$ case.
We also study the connection between cluster algebras with universal coefficients and cluster complexes. We show that for a full rank positively graded cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of geometric and finite cluster type, the cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}^{\mathrm{univ}}$ with universal coefficients may be recovered as the universal family over a partial closure of a torus orbit in a multigraded Hilbert scheme. Likewise, we show that under suitable hypotheses, the cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}^{\mathrm{univ}}$ may be recovered as the coordinate ring for a certain torus-invariant semiuniversal deformation of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the cluster complex.
We apply these results to show that for any cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of geometric and finite cluster type, $\mathcal{A}$ is Gorenstein, and $\mathcal{A}$ is unobstructed if it is skew-symmetric. Moreover, if $\mathcal{A}$ has enough frozen variables then it has no non-trivial torus-invariant deformations. We also study the Gröbner theory of the ideal of relations among cluster and frozen variables of $\mathcal{A}$. As a byproduct we generalize previous results in this setting obtained by Bossinger, Mohammadi and Nájera Chávez for Grassmannians of planes and $\text{Gr}(3,6)$.
Betti numbers of fat forests and their Alexander dual
Let $k$ be a field and $R=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I=S/I$ a graded ring. Then $R$ has a $t$-linear resolution if $I$ is generated by homogeneous elements of degree $t$, and all higher syzygies are linear. Thus $R$ has a $t$-linear resolution if ${\rm Tor}^S_{i,j}(S/I,k)=0$ if $j\ne i+t-1$.
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ on $[{\bf n}]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and a field $k$, the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ is $k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I$, where $I$ is generated by those squarefree monomials $x_{i_1}\cdots x_{i_k}$ for which $\{ i_1,\ldots,i_k\}$ does not belong to $Δ$.
In \cite{Fr} the Stanley-Reisner rings with 2-linear resolution are determined. Their associated complexes has had different names in the literature. We call them fat forests here. In this article we determine the Betti numbers of fat forests. We also consider Betti numbers of Alexander duals of fat forests.

The goal of the present paper is the study of some algebraic invariants of Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes of dimension $d - 1$. We prove that the inequality $d \leq \mathrm{reg}(Δ) \cdot \mathrm{type}(Δ)$ holds for any $(d-1)$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfying $Δ=\mathrm{core}(Δ)$, where $\mathrm{reg}(Δ)$ (resp. $\mathrm{type}(Δ)$) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity (resp. Cohen-Macaulay type) of the Stanley-Reisner ring $\Bbbk[Δ]$. Moreover, for any given integers $d,r,t$ satisfying $r,t \geq 2$ and $r \leq d \leq rt$, we construct a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ(G)$ as an independent complex of a graph $G$ such that $\dim(Δ(G))=d-1$, $\mathrm{reg}(Δ(G))=r$ and $\mathrm{type}(Δ(G))=t$.
A colorful Hochster formula and universal parameters for face rings

This paper has two related parts. The first generalizes Hochster's formula on resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings to a colorful version, applicable to any proper vertex-coloring of a simplicial complex. The second part examines a universal system of parameters for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes, and more generally, face rings of simplicial posets. These parameters have good properties, including being fixed under symmetries, and detecting depth of the face ring. Moreover, when resolving the face ring over these parameters, the shape is predicted, conjecturally, by the colorful Hochster formula.
Higher dimensional connectivity and minimal degree of random graphs with an eye towards minimal free resolutions
In this note we define and study graph invariants generalizing to higher dimension the maximum degree of a vertex and the vertex-connectivity (our $0$-dimensional cases). These are known to coincide almost surely in any regime for Erdoes-Renyi random graphs. We show the same in the one dimensional case for a middle density regime and show the easier inequality for all dimensions in the same regime. Our original motivation comes from the study of minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings of clique complexes of graphs in commutative algebra, In that setting the higher dimensional vertex connectivities determine the lengths of the strands. Through our results we aim to replace (asymptotically) vertex connectivity by a simpler invariant.
Higher weight spectra of Veronese codes
We study q-ary linear codes C obtained from Veronese surfaces over finite fields. We show how one can find the higher weight spectra of these codes, or equivalently, the weight distribution of all extension codes of C over all field extensions of the field with q elements. Our methods will be a study of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code C

We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.

We study a variation of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$-vector of a simplicial complex $C$, whose entries are defined as weighted averages of Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes of $C$. We show that these invariants satisfy an Alexander-Dehn-Sommerville type identity, and behave nicely under natural operations on triangulated manifolds and spheres such as connected sums and bistellar flips.
In the language of commutative algebra, the invariants are weighted sums of graded Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $C$. This interpretation implies, by a result of Adiprasito, that the Billera-Lee sphere maximizes these invariants among triangulated spheres with a given $f$-vector. For the first entry of $σ$, we extend this bound to the class of strongly connected pure complexes.
As an application, we show how upper bounds on $σ$ can be used to obtain lower bounds on the $f$-vector of triangulated $4$-manifolds with transitive symmetry on vertices and prescribed vector of Betti numbers.
The $e$-vector of a simplicial complex
We study the exponential Hilbert series (both coarsely- and finely-graded) of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an abstract simplicial complex, $Δ$, and we introduce the $e$-vector of $Δ$, which relates to the coefficients of the exponential Hilbert series. We explore the relationship of the $e$-vector with the classical $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $Δ$ while simultaneously investigating the geometric information that the $e$-vector encodes about $Δ$. We then prove a simple combinatorial identity for the $e$-vector in the case where $Δ$ is an Eulerian manifold.

We extend the notion of face rings of simplicial complexes and simplicial posets to the case of finite-length (possibly infinite) simplicial posets with a group action. The action on the complex induces an action on the face ring, and we prove that the ring of invariants is isomorphic to the face ring of the quotient simplicial poset under a mild condition on the group action. We also identify a class of actions on simplicial complexes that preserve the homotopical Cohen-Macaulay property under quotients. When the acted-upon poset is the independence complex of a semimatroid, the $h$-polynomial of the ring of invariants can be read off the Tutte polynomial of the associated group action. Moreover, in this case an additional condition on the action ensures that the quotient poset is Cohen-Macaulay in characteristic 0 and every characteristic that does not divide an explicitly computable number. This implies the same property for the associated Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, this holds for independence posets and rings associated to toric, elliptic and, more generally, $(p,q)$-arrangements. As a byproduct, we prove that posets of connected components (also known as posets of {layers}) of such arrangements are Cohen-Macaulay with the same condition on the characteristic.

We investigate generalized notions of the nerve complex for the facets of a simplicial complex. We show that the homologies of these higher nerve complexes determine the depth of the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ as well as the $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $Δ$. We present, as an application, a formula for computing regularity of monomial ideals.
Stanley-Reisner rings for quasi-arithmetic matroids
In this note we define a Stanley-Reisner ring for quasi-arithmetic matroids and more general structures. To this end, we define two types of CW complexes associated with a quasi-arithmetic matroid that generalize independence complexes of matroids. Then we use Stanley's construction of Stanley-Reisner rings for simplicial posets.

The $b$-vector $(b_1,b_2\ldots,b_d)$ of a graph $G$ is defined in terms of its clique vector $(c_1,c_2\ldots,c_d)$ by the equation $\sum^d_{i=1}b_i(x+1)^{i-1}=\sum^d_{i=1} c_i x^{i-1},$ where $d$ is the largest cardinality of a clique in $G$. We study the relation of the $b$-vector of a chordal graph $G$ with some structural properties of $G$. In particular, we show that the $b$-vector encodes different aspects of the connectivity and clique dominance of $G$. Furthermore, we relate the $b$-vector with the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring associated to clique simplicial complex of $G$.
The strong ring of simplicial complexes
We define a ring R of geometric objects G generated by finite abstract simplicial complexes. To every G belongs Hodge Laplacian H as the square of the Dirac operator determining its cohomology and a unimodular connection matrix L). The sum of the matrix entries of the inverse of L is the Euler characteristic. The spectra of H as well as inductive dimension add under multiplication while the spectra of L multiply. The nullity of the Hodge of H are the Betti numbers which can now be signed. The map assigning to G its Poincare polynomial is a ring homomorphism from R the polynomials. Especially the Euler characteristic is a ring homomorphism. Also Wu characteristic produces a ring homomorphism. The Kuenneth correspondence between cohomology groups is explicit as a basis for the product can be obtained from a basis of the factors. The product in R produces the strong product for the connection graphs and leads to tensor products of connection Laplacians. The strong ring R is also a subring of the full Stanley-Reisner ring S Every element G can be visualized by its Barycentric refinement graph G1 and its connection graph G'. Gauss-Bonnet, Poincare-Hopf or the Brouwer-Lefschetz extend to the strong ring. The isomorphism of R with a subring of the strong Sabidussi ring shows that the multiplicative primes in R are the simplicial complexes and that every connected element in the strong ring has a unique prime factorization. The Sabidussi ring is dual to the Zykov ring, in which the Zykov join is the addition. The connection Laplacian of the d-dimensional lattice remains invertible in the infinite volume limit: there is a mass gap in any dimension.

We consider simplicial complexes admitting a free action by an abelian group. Specifically, we establish a refinement of the classic result of Hochster describing the local cohomology modules of the associated Stanley--Reisner ring, demonstrating that the topological structure of the free action extends to the algebraic setting. If the complex in question is also Buchsbaum, this new description allows for a specialization of Schenzel's calculation of the Hilbert series of some of the ring's Artinian reductions. In further application, we generalize to the Buchsbaum case the results of Stanley and Adin that provide a lower bound on the $h$-vector of a Cohen-Macaulay complex admitting a free action by a cyclic group of prime order.
