Squarefree P-modules and the cd-index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce a new algebraic concept, which we call squarefree P-modules. This concept is inspired from Karu's proof of the non-negativity of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets, and supplies a way to study cd-indices from the viewpoint of commutative algebra. Indeed, by using the theory of squarefree P-modules, we give several new algebraic and combinatorial results on CW-posets. First, we define an analogue of the cd-index for any CW-poset and prove its non-negativity when a CW-poset is Cohen-Macaulay. This result proves that the h-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay regular CW-complex is unimodal. Second, we prove that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the barycentric subdivision of an odd dimensional Cohen-Macaulay polyhedral complex has the weak Lefschetz property. Third, we obtain sharp upper bounds of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets for a fixed rank generating function.

Topology of polyhedral products and the Golod property of Stanley-Reisner rings
The polyhedral product is a space constructed from a simplicial complex and a collection of pairs of spaces, which is connected with the Stanley Reisner ring of the simplicial complex via cohomology. Generalizing the previous work Grbic and Theriault, Grujic and Welker, and the authors, we show a decomposition of polyhedral products for a large class of simplicial complexes including the ones whose Alexander duals are shellable or sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. This implies the property, called Golod, of the corresponding Stanley-Reisner rings proved by Herzog, Reiner and Welker.

0-Hecke algebra action on the Stanley-Reisner ring of the Boolean algebra
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19 (2015) 293--323 • View PublicationBIB
We define an action of the 0-Hecke algebra of type A on the Stanley-Reisner ring of the Boolean algebra. By studying this action we obtain a family of multivariate noncommutative symmetric functions, which specialize to the noncommutative Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions and their (q,t)-analogues introduced by Bergeron and Zabrocki, and to a more general family of noncommutative symmetric functions having parameters associated with paths in binary trees introduced recently by Lascoux, Novelli, and Thibon. We also obtain multivariate quasisymmetric function identities, which specialize to results of Garsia and Gessel on generating functions of multivariate distributions of permutation statistics.

Codismantlability and projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of special hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper firstly, we generalize the concept of codismantlable graphs to hypergraphs and show that some special vertex decomposable hypergraphs are codismantlable. Then we generalize the concept of bouquet in graphs to hypergraphs to extend some combinatorial invariants of graphs about disjointness of a set of bouquets. We use these invariants to characterize the projective dimension of Stanley-Reisner ring of special hypergraphs in some sense.

Wedge decomposition of polyhedral products
We prove that certain polyhedral products, including the moment-angle complexes, for the Alexander duals of shellable and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay complexes decompose into wedges of explicitly given suspension spaces, which implies the properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings, known as Golod, of theses complexes.

Using Edge-induced and Vertex-induced Subhypergraph Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a hypergraph $\mathcal H$, we consider the edge-induced and vertex-induced subhypergraph polynomials and study their relation. We use this relation to prove that both polynomials are reconstructible, and to prove a theorem relating the Hilbert series of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the independent complex of $\mathcal H$ and the edge-induced subhypergraph polynomial. We also consider reconstruction of some algebraic invariants of $\mathcal H$.

Algebra retracts and Stanley-Reisner rings
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 218 (2014), no. 9, 1665-1682 • View PublicationBIB
In a paper from 2002, Bruns and Gubeladze conjectured that graded algebra retracts of polytopal algebras over a field $k$ are again polytopal algebras. Motivated by this conjecture, we prove that graded algebra retracts of Stanley-Reisner rings over a field $k$ are again Stanley-Reisner rings. Extending this result further, we give partial evidence for a conjecture saying that monomial quotients of standard graded polynomial rings over $k$ descend along graded algebra retracts.
The neural ring: an algebraic tool for analyzing the intrinsic structure of neural codes
Published in Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, Volume 75, Issue 9, pp. 1571-1611, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Neurons in the brain represent external stimuli via neural codes. These codes often arise from stereotyped stimulus-response maps, associating to each neuron a convex receptive field. An important problem confronted by the brain is to infer properties of a represented stimulus space without knowledge of the receptive fields, using only the intrinsic structure of the neural code. How does the brain do this? To address this question, it is important to determine what stimulus space features can - in principle - be extracted from neural codes. This motivates us to define the neural ring and a related neural ideal, algebraic objects that encode the full combinatorial data of a neural code. Our main finding is that these objects can be expressed in a "canonical form" that directly translates to a minimal description of the receptive field structure intrinsic to the code. We also find connections to Stanley-Reisner rings, and use ideas similar to those in the theory of monomial ideals to obtain an algorithm for computing the primary decomposition of pseudo-monomial ideals. This allows us to algorithmically extract the canonical form associated to any neural code, providing the groundwork for inferring stimulus space features from neural activity alone.

Bounds for the Betti numbers of successive stellar subdivisions of a simplex
Published in Hokkaido Math. J. 44 (2015), 341-364 • Search Publication
We give a bound for the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a stellar subdivision of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex by applying unprojection theory. From this we derive a bound for the Betti numbers of iterated stellar subdivisions of the boundary complex of a simplex. The bound depends only on the number of subdivisions, and we construct examples which prove that it is sharp.
Generic and special constructions of pure O-sequences
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. (2014) 46 (5): 924-942 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that the h-vectors of Stanley-Reisner rings of three classes of matroids are pure O-sequences. The classes are (a) matroids that are truncations of other matroids, or more generally of Cohen-Macaulay complexes, (b) matroids whose dual is (rank + 2)-partite, and (c) matroids of Cohen-Macaulay type at most five. Consequences for the computational search for a counterexample to a conjecture of Stanley are discussed.

Betti diagrams from graphs
Published in Algebra Number Theory 7 (2013) 1725-1742 • View PublicationBIB
The emergence of Boij-Söderberg theory has given rise to new connections between combinatorics and commutative algebra. Herzog, Sharifan, and Varbaro recently showed that every Betti diagram of an ideal with a k-linear minimal resolution arises from that of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex. In this paper, we extend their result for the special case of 2-linear resolutions using purely combinatorial methods. Specifically, we show bijective correspondences between Betti diagrams of ideals with 2-linear resolutions, threshold graphs, and anti-lecture hall compositions. Moreover, we prove that any Betti diagram of a module with a 2-linear resolution is realized by a direct sum of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to threshold graphs. Our key observation is that these objects are the lattice points in a normal reflexive lattice polytope.

Hamming weights and Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each linear code over a finite field we associate the matroid of its parity check matrix. We show to what extent one can determine the generalized Hamming weights of the code (or defined for a matroid in general) from various sets of Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes associated to the matroid.

The $f$--vector of the clique complex of chordal graphs and Betti numbers of edge ideals of uniform hypergraphs
We describe the Betti numbers of the edge ideals $I(G)$ of uniform hypergraphs $G$ such that $I(G)$ has linear graded free resolution. We give an algebraic equation system and some inequalities for the components of the $f$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph. Finally we present an explicit formula for the multiplicity of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the edge ideals of any chordal graph.

Moment-angle complexes and polyhedral products for convex polytopes
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 275(1), 2011, 15-46 • View PublicationBIB
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.
Vertex colorings of simplicial complexes
We define an (r,s)-coloring of an abstract simplicial complex to be a coloring using r colors of the vertices so that in any simplex at most s vertices have the same color. We translate the problem of finding an (r,s)-coloring of a given simplex to a topological problem and to a ring theoretic problem. The topological version involves vector bundles over Davis--Januszkiewicz spaces and the algebraic one involves factorizations in Stanley-Reisner rings.

A Generalization of NBC Bases to Broken Circuit Complexes of Matroids
Brown has shown that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex of a graph has a linear system of parameters which is defined in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph. Later on Brown and Sagan conjectured a special set of monomials - a so-called NBC basis - described in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph to be a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient of the Stanley-Reisner ring and proved this to be true for theta and phi graphs. We generalize the aforementioned linear system of parameters to broken circuit complexes of regular matroids and transfer the notion of NBC bases to the general setting of regular matroids. We are able to obtain the analogous results to the ones of Brown and Sagan in this more general context. We show a deletion-contraction axiom for the existence of NBC bases. Using this results we identify two infinite classes of matroids which have NBC bases and which are the matroid theoretic analogue of theta and phi graphs.
Bipartite $S_2$ graphs are Cohen-Macaulay
In this paper we show that if the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex of independent sets of a bipartite graph $G$ satisfies Serre's condition $S_2$, then $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. As a consequence, the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs due to Herzog and Hibi carries over this family of bipartite graphs. We check that the equivalence of Cohen-Macaulay property and the condition $S_2$ is also true for chordal graphs and we classify cyclic graphs with respect to the condition $S_2$.

Stellar subdivisions and Stanley-Reisner rings of Gorenstein complexes
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 55 (2013), 235-247 • Search Publication
Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.

On the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes
Published in Osaka J. Math. 49-1 (2012), 81-100 • Search Publication
We study the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes, using ideas from unprojection theory. Consider the boundary simplicial complex Delta(d,m) of the d-dimensional cyclic polytope with m vertices. We show how to express the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta(d,m+1) in terms of the Stanley-Reisner rings of Delta(d,m) and Delta(d-2,m-1). As an application, we use the Kustin-Miller complex construction to identify the minimal graded free resolutions of these rings. In particular, we recover results of Schenzel, Terai and Hibi about their graded Betti numbers.

Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings determine hierarchical Markov degrees
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 37, Issue 4 (2013), Page 667-682 • View PublicationBIB
There are two seemingly unrelated ideals associated with a simplicial complex Δ. One is the Stanley-Reisner ideal I_Δ, the monomial ideal generated by minimal non-faces of Δ, well-known in combinatorial commutative algebra. The other is the toric ideal I_{M(Δ)} of the facet subring of Δ, whose generators give a Markov basis for the hierarchical model defined by Δ, playing a prominent role in algebraic statistics. In this note we show that the complexity of the generators of I_{M(Δ)} is determined by the Betti numbers of I_Δ. The unexpected connection between the syzygies of the Stanley-Reisner ideal and degrees of minimal generators of the toric ideal provide a framework for further exploration of the connection between the model and its many relatives in algebra and combinatorics.
