Spectra and eigenvectors of the Segre transformation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two sequences $\fa=(a_n)_{n\geq 0}$ and $\fb=(b_n)_{n\geq 0}$ of complex numbers such that their generating series are of the form $\sum_{n\geq 0}a_n t^n=\frac{\fh(\fa)(t)}{(1-t)^{d_{\fa}}}$ and $\sum_{n\geq 0}b_n t^n=\frac{\fh(\fb)(t)}{(1-t)^{d_{\fb}}}$, where $\fh(\fa)(t)$ and $\fh(\fb)(t)$ are polynomials, we consider their Segre product $\fa\ast\fb=(a_nb_n)_{n\geq 0}$. We are interested in the bilinear transformations that compute the coefficient sequence of $\fh(\fa\ast\fb)(t)$ from those of $\fh(\fa)(t)$ and $\fh(\fb)(t)$, where $\sum_{n\geq 0}a_nb_n t^n=\frac{\fh(\fa\ast\fb)(t)}{(1-t)^{d_{\fa}+d_{\fb}-1}}$. The motivation to study this problem comes from commutative algebra as the Hilbert series of the Segre product of two standard graded algebras equals the Segre product of the two individual Hilbert series. We provide an explicit description of these transformations and compute their spectra. In particular, we show that the transformation matrices are diagonalizable with integral eigenvalues. We also provide explicit formulae for the eigenvectors of the transformation matrices. Finally, we present a conjecture concerning the real-rootedness of $\fh(\fa^{\ast r})(t)$ if $r$ is large enough, where $\fa^{\ast r}=\fa\ast\cdots\ast \fa$ is the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Segre product of the sequence $\fa$ and the coefficients of $\fh(\fa)(t)$ are assumed to be non-negative.

Algebraic properties of classes of path ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider path ideals associated to special classes of posets such as tree posets and cycles. We express their property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay in terms of the underlying poset. Moreover, monomial ideals, which arise from the Luce-decomposable model in algebraic statistics, can be viewed as path ideals of certain posets. We study invariants of these so-called \emph{Luce-decomposable} monomial ideals for diamond posets and products of chains. In particular, for these classes of posets, we explicitly compute their Krull dimension, their projective dimension, their regularity and their Betti numbers.

Lefschetz properties and the Veronese construction
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate Lefschetz properties of Veronese subalgebras. We show that, for a sufficiently large $r$, the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese subalgebra of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded $K$-algebra has properties similar to the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, which we call the `almost weak' and `almost strong' Lefschetz properties. By using this result, we obtain new results on $h$- and $g$-polynomials of Veronese subalgebras.

Enumerative $g$-theorems for the Veronese construction for formal power series and graded algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In particular, the sequence satisfies the consequences of the unimodality part of the $g$-conjecture. We give applications of the main result to Hilbert series of Veronese algebras of standard graded algebras and the $f$-vectors of edgewise subdivisions of simplicial complexes.

Hypergraph Coloring Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to generalize the notion of the coloring complex of a graph to hypergraphs. We present three different interpretations of those complexes -- a purely combinatorial one and two geometric ones. It is shown, that most of the properties, which are known to be true for coloring complexes of graphs, break down in this more general setting, e.g., Cohen-Macaulayness and partitionabilty. Nevertheless, we are able to provide bounds for the $f$- and $h$-vectors of those complexes which yield new bounds on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs. Moreover, it is shown that the coloring complex of a hypergraph has a wedge decomposition, though we conjecture that in general this decomposition is not homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In addition, we can completely characterize those hypergraphs whose coloring complex is connected.

A poset fiber theorem for doubly Cohen-Macaulay posets and its applications to non-crossing partitions and injective words
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies topological properties of the lattices of non-crossing partitions of types A and B and of the poset of injective words. Specifically, it is shown that after the removal of the bottom and top elements (if existent) these posets are doubly Cohen-Macaulay. This strengthens the well-known facts that these posets are Cohen-Macaulay. Our results rely on a new poset fiber theorem which turns out to be a useful tool to prove double (homotopy) Cohen-Macaulayness of a poset. Applications to complexes of injective words are also included.

Partition and composition matrices
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 118 (2011), no. 5, 1624-1637 • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces two matrix analogues for set partitions. A composition matrix on a finite set X is an upper triangular matrix whose entries partition X, and for which there are no rows or columns containing only empty sets. A partition matrix is a composition matrix in which an order is placed on where entries may appear relative to one-another. We show that partition matrices are in one-to-one correspondence with inversion tables. Non-decreasing inversion tables are shown to correspond to partition matrices with a row ordering relation. Partition matrices which are s-diagonal are classified in terms of inversion tables. Bidiagonal partition matrices are enumerated using the transfer-matrix method and are equinumerous with permutations which are sortable by two pop-stacks in parallel. We show that composition matrices on X are in one-to-one correspondence with (2+2)-free posets on X. Also, composition matrices whose rows satisfy a column-ordering relation are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with parking functions. Finally, we show that pairs of ascent sequences and permutations are in one-to-one correspondence with (2+2)-free posets whose elements are the cycles of a permutation, and use this relation to give an expression for the number of (2+2)-free posets on {1,...,n}.

A Generalization of NBC Bases to Broken Circuit Complexes of Matroids
Brown has shown that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex of a graph has a linear system of parameters which is defined in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph. Later on Brown and Sagan conjectured a special set of monomials - a so-called NBC basis - described in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph to be a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient of the Stanley-Reisner ring and proved this to be true for theta and phi graphs. We generalize the aforementioned linear system of parameters to broken circuit complexes of regular matroids and transfer the notion of NBC bases to the general setting of regular matroids. We are able to obtain the analogous results to the ones of Brown and Sagan in this more general context. We show a deletion-contraction axiom for the existence of NBC bases. Using this results we identify two infinite classes of matroids which have NBC bases and which are the matroid theoretic analogue of theta and phi graphs.

Exterior depth and exterior generic annihilator numbers
We study the exterior depth of an $E$-module and its exterior generic annihilator numbers. For the exterior depth of a squarefree $E$-module we show how it relates to the symmetric depth of the corresponding $S$-module and classify those simplicial complexes having a particular exterior depth in terms of their exterior shifting. We define exterior annihilator numbers analogously to the annihilator numbers over the polynomial ring introduced by Trung and Conca, Herzog and Hibi. In addition to a combinatorial interpretation of the annihilator numbers we show how they are related to the symmetric Betti numbers and the Cartan-Betti numbers, respectively. We finally conclude with an example which shows that neither the symmetric nor the exterior generic annihilator numbers are minimal among the annihilator numbers with respect to a sequence.

The Lefschetz property for barycentric subdivisions of shellable complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that an 'almost strong Lefschetz' property holds for the barycentric subdivision of a shellable complex. From this we conclude that for the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay complex, the $h$-vector is unimodal, peaks in its middle degree (one of them if the dimension of the complex is even), and that its $g$-vector is an $M$-sequence. In particular, the (combinatorial) $g$-conjecture is verified for barycentric subdivisions of homology spheres. In addition, using the above algebraic result, we derive new inequalities on a refinement of the Eulerian statistics on permutations, where permutations are grouped by the number of descents and the image of 1.

The Multiplicity Conjecture for Barycentric Subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ we study the effect of barycentric subdivision on ring theoretic invariants of its Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular, for Stanley-Reisner rings of barycentric subdivisions we verify a conjecture by Huneke and Herzog & Srinivasan, that relates the multiplicity of a standard graded $k$-algebra to the product of the maximal and minimal shifts in its minimal free resolution up to the height. On the way to proving the conjecture we develop new and list well known results on behavior of dimension, Hilbert series, multiplicity, local cohomology, depth and regularity when passing from the Stanley-Reisner ring of $Δ$ to the one of its barycentric subdivision.
