log-Coulomb gas with norm-density in $p$-fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is a formula for the integral $$\int_{K^N}ρ(x)\big(\max_{i<j}|x_i-x_j|\big)^a\big(\min_{i<j}|x_i-x_j|\big)^b\prod_{i<j}|x_i-x_j|^{s_{ij}}|dx|,$$ where $K$ is a $p$-field (i.e., a nonarchimedean local field) with canonical absolute value $|\cdot|$, $N\geq 2$, $a,b\in\mathbb{C}$, the function $ρ:K^N\to\mathbb{C}$ has mild growth and decay conditions and factors through the norm $\|x\|=\max_i|x_i|$, and $|dx|$ is the usual Haar measure on $K^N$. The formula is a finite sum of functions described explicitly by combinatorial data, and the largest open domain of complex tuples $(s_{ij})_{i<j}$ on which the integral converges absolutely is given explicitly in terms of these data and the parameters $a$, $b$, $N$, and $K$. We then specialize the formula to $s_{ij}=\mathfrak{q}_i\mathfrak{q}_jβ$, where $\mathfrak{q}_1,\mathfrak{q}_2,\dots,\mathfrak{q}_N>0$ represent the charges of an $N$-particle log-Coulomb gas in $K$ with background density $ρ$ and inverse temperature $β$. From this specialization we obtain a mixed-charge $p$-field analogue of Mehta's integral formula, as well as formulas and low-temperature limits for the joint moments of $\max_{i<j}|x_i-x_j|$ (the diameter of the gas) and $\min_{i<j}|x_i-x_j|$ (the minimum distance between its particles).

Exact cubature rules for symmetric functions
Published in Math. Comp. 88 (2019), no. 317, 1229-1249 • View PublicationBIB
We employ a multivariate extension of the Gauss quadrature formula, originally due to Berens, Schmid and Xu [BSX95], so as to derive cubature rules for the integration of symmetric functions over hypercubes (or infinite limiting degenerations thereof) with respect to the densities of unitary random matrix ensembles. Our main application concerns the explicit implementation of a class of cubature rules associated with the Bernstein-Szegö polynomials, which permit the exact integration of symmetric rational functions with prescribed poles at coordinate hyperplanes against unitary circular Jacobi distributions stemming from the Haar measures on the symplectic and the orthogonal groups.

Semicontinuity of structure for small sumsets in compact abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pairs of subsets $A, B$ of a compact abelian group $G$ where the sumset $A+B:=\{a+b: a\in A, b\in B\}$ is small. Let $m$ and $m_{*}$ be Haar measure and inner Haar measure on $G$, respectively. Given $\varepsilon>0$, we classify all pairs $A,B$ of Haar measurable subsets of $G$ satisfying $m(A), m(B)>\varepsilon$ and $m_{*}(A+B)\leq m(A)+m(B)+δ$ where $δ=δ(\varepsilon)>0$ is small. We also study the case where the $δ$-popular sumset $A+_δB:=\{t\in G: m(A\cap (t-B))>δ\}$ is small. We prove that for all $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $δ>0$ such that if $A$ and $B$ are subsets of a compact abelian group $G$ having $m(A), m(B)>\varepsilon$ and $m(A+_δB)\leq m(A)+m(B)+δ$, then there are sets $S, T\subseteq G$ such that $m(A\triangle S)+m(B\triangle T)<\varepsilon$ and $m(S+T)\leq m(S)+m(T)$. Appealing to known results, the latter inequality yields strong structural information on $S$ and $T$, and therefore on $A$ and $B$.

An inverse theorem for an inequality of Kneser
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G = (G,+)$ be a compact connected abelian group, and let $μ_G$ denote its probability Haar measure. A theorem of Kneser (generalising previous results of Macbeath and Raikov) establishes the bound $$ μ_G(A + B) \geq \min( μ_G(A)+μ_G(B), 1 ) $$ whenever $A,B$ are compact subsets of $G$, and $A+B := \{ a+b: a \in A, b \in B \}$ denotes the sumset of $A$ and $B$. Clearly one has equality when $μ_G(A)+μ_G(B) \geq 1$. Another way in which equality can be obtained is when $A = φ^{-1}(I), B = φ^{-1}(J)$ for some continuous surjective homomorphism $φ: G \to {\bf R}/{\bf Z}$ and compact arcs $I,J \subset {\bf R}/{\bf Z}$. We establish an inverse theorem that asserts, roughly speaking, that when equality in the above bound is almost attained, then $A,B$ are close to one of the above examples. We also give a more "robust" form of this theorem in which the sumset $A+B$ is replaced by the partial sumset $A +_\varepsilon B :=\{ 1_A * 1_B \geq \varepsilon \}$ for some small $\varepsilon >0$. In a subsequent paper with Joni Teräväinen, we will apply this latter inverse theorem to establish that certain patterns in multiplicative functions occur with positive density.

On sets with small sumset in the circle
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove results on the structure of a subset of the circle group having positive inner Haar measure and doubling constant close to the minimum. These results go toward a continuous analogue in the circle of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem from the integer setting. An analogue of this theorem in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ has been pursued extensively, and we use some recent results in this direction. For instance, obtaining a continuous analogue of a result of Serra and Zémor, we prove that if a subset $A$ of the circle is not too large and has doubling constant at most $2+\varepsilon$ with $\varepsilon<10^{-4}$, then for some integer $n>0$ the dilate $n\cdot A$ is included in an interval in which it has density at least $1/(1+\varepsilon)$. Our arguments yield other variants of this result as well, notably a version for two sets which makes progress toward a conjecture of Bilu. We include two applications of these results. The first is a new upper bound on the size of $k$-sum-free sets in the circle and in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. The second gives structural information on subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ of doubling constant at most $3+\varepsilon$.

Weingarten calculus via orthogonality relations: new applications
Published in ALEA, Lat. Am. J. Probab. Math. Stat. 14 (2017), no. 1, 631-656 • View PublicationBIB
Weingarten calculus is a completely general and explicit method to compute the moments of the Haar measure on compact subgroups of matrix algebras. Particular cases of this calculus were initiated by theoretical physicists -- including Weingarten, after whom this calculus was coined by the first author, after investigating it systematically. Substantial progress was achieved subsequently by the second author and coworkers, based on representation theoretic and combinatorial techniques. All formulas of `Weingarten calculus' are in the spirit of Weingarten's seminal paper [W78]. However, modern proofs are very different from Weingarten's initial ideas. In this paper, we revisit Weingarten's initial proof and we illustrate its power by uncovering two new important applications: (i) a uniform bound on the Weingarten function, that subsumes existing uniform bounds, and is optimal up to a polynomial factor, and (ii) an extension of Weingarten calculus to symmetric spaces and conceptual proofs of identities established by the second author.

Almost all non-archimedean Kakeya sets have measure zero
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Kakeya sets over local non-archimedean fields with a probabilistic point of view: we define a probability measure on the set of Kakeya sets as above and prove that, according to this measure, almost all non-archimedean Kakeya sets are neglectable according to the Haar measure. We also discuss possible relations with the non-archimedean Kakeya conjecture.

$p$-adic asymptotic properties of constant-recursive sequences
Published in Indagationes Mathematicae 28 (2017) 205-220 • View PublicationBIB
In this article we study $p$-adic properties of sequences of integers (or $p$-adic integers) that satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. For such a sequence, we give an explicit approximate twisted interpolation to $\mathbb Z_p$. We then use this interpolation for two applications. The first is that certain subsequences of constant-recursive sequences converge $p$-adically. The second is that the density of the residues modulo $p^α$ attained by a constant-recursive sequence converges, as $α\to \infty$, to the Haar measure of a certain subset of $\mathbb Z_p$. To illustrate these results, we determine some particular limits for the Fibonacci sequence.
Local spectral gap in simple Lie groups and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a novel notion of {\it local spectral gap} for general, possibly infinite, measure preserving actions. We establish local spectral gap for the left translation action $Γ\curvearrowright G$, whenever $Γ$ is a dense subgroup generated by algebraic elements of an arbitrary connected simple Lie group $G$. This extends to the non-compact setting recent works of Bourgain and Gamburd \cite{BG06,BG10}, and Benoist and de Saxcé \cite{BdS14}. We present several applications to the Banach-Ruziewicz problem, orbit equivalence rigidity, continuous and monotone expanders, and bounded random walks on $G$. In particular, we prove that, up to a multiplicative constant, the Haar measure is the unique $Γ$-invariant finitely additive measure defined on all bounded measurable subsets of $G$.

VC-sets and generic compact domination
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let X be a closed subset of a locally compact second countable group G whose family of translates has finite VC-dimension. We show that the topological border of X has Haar measure 0. Under an extra technical hypothesis, this also holds if X is constructible. We deduce from this generic compact domination for definably amenable NIP groups.
On a Cohen-Lenstra Heuristic for Jacobians of Random Graphs
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 42 (2015), no. 3, 701-723 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we make specific conjectures about the distribution of Jacobians of random graphs with their canonical duality pairings. Our conjectures are based on a Cohen-Lenstra type heuristic saying that a finite abelian group with duality pairing appears with frequency inversely proportional to the size of the group times the size of the group of automorphisms that preserve the pairing. We conjecture that the Jacobian of a random graph is cyclic with probability a little over .7935. We determine the values of several other statistics on Jacobians of random graphs that would follow from our conjectures. In support of the conjectures, we prove that random symmetric matrices over the p-adic integers, distributed according to Haar measure, have cokernels distributed according to the above heuristic. We also give experimental evidence in support of our conjectures.

Association schemes on general measure spaces and zero-dimensional Abelian groups
Published in Advances in Mathematics, vol. 281 (2015), pp. 142-247 • View PublicationBIB
Association schemes form one of the main objects of algebraic combinatorics, classically defined on finite sets. In this paper we define association schemes on arbitrary, possibly uncountable sets with a measure. We study operator realizations of the adjacency algebras of schemes and derive simple properties of these algebras. To develop a theory of general association schemes, we focus on schemes on topological Abelian groups where we can employ duality theory and the machinery of harmonic analysis. We construct translation association schemes on such groups using the language of spectrally dual partitions. Such partitions are shown to arise naturally on topological zero-dimensional Abelian groups, for instance, Cantor-type groups or the groups of p-adic numbers. This enables us to construct large classes of dual pairs of association schemes on zero-dimensional groups with respect to their Haar measure, and to compute their eigenvalues and intersection numbers. We also derive properties of infinite metric schemes, connecting them with the properties of the non-Archimedean metric on the group. Pursuing the connection between schemes on zero-dimensional groups and harmonic analysis, we show that the eigenvalues have a natural interpretation in terms of Littlewood-Paley wavelet bases, and in the (equivalent) language of martingale theory. For a class of nonmetric schemes constructed in the paper, the eigenvalues coincide with values of orthogonal functions on zero-dimensional groups. We observe that these functions, which we call Haar-like bases, have the properties of wavelets on the group, including in some special cases the self-similarity property. This establishes a seemingly new link between algebraic combinatorics and harmonic analysis. We conclude the paper by studying some analogs of problems of classical coding theory related to the theory of association schemes.

Matrix Units in the Symmetric Group Algebra, and Unitary Integration
In this paper, we establish an explicit isomorphism between the symmetric group algebra and the path algebra of the Young graph. Specifically, we construct a family of matrix units in the group algebra. As a main application of this construction, we obtain new formulas, alternative to Weingarten calculus, for the integral of a polynomial over the unitary group with respect to the Haar measure. In particular, we obtain a closed formula for the law of moments of the first k rows of the unitary group.

Random colorings and automorphism breaking in locally finite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A colouring of a graph G is called distinguishing if its stabiliser in Aut G is trivial. It has been conjectured that, if every automorphism of a locally finite graph moves infinitely many vertices, then there is a distinguishing 2-colouring. We study properties of random 2-colourings of locally finite graphs and show that the stabiliser of such a colouring is almost surely nowhere dense in Aut G and a null set with respect to the Haar measure on the automorphism group. We also investigate random 2-colourings in several classes of locally finite graphs where the existence of a distinguishing 2-colouring has already been established. It turns out that in all of these cases a random 2-colouring is almost surely distinguishing.

Integration formulas for Brownian motion on classical compact Lie groups

Combinatorial formulas for the moments of the Brownian motion on classical compact Lie groups are obtained. These expressions are deformations of formulas of B. Collins and P. Śniady for moments of the Haar measure and yield a proof of the First Fundamental Theorem of invariant theory and of classical Schur-Weyl dualities based on stochastic calculus.

The Solecki submeasures and densities on groups
We introduce the Solecki submeasure $σ(A)=\inf_F\sup_{x,y\in G}|F\cap xAy|/|F|$ and its left and right modifications on a group $G$, and study the interplay between the Solecki submeasure and the Haar measure on compact topological groups. Also we show that the right Solecki density on a countable amenable group coincides with the upper Banach density $d^*$ which allows us to generalize some fundamental results of Bogoliuboff, Folner, Cotlar and Ricabarra, Ellis and Keynes about difference sets and Jin, Beiglbock, Bergelson and Fish about the sumsets to the class of all amenable groups.

Let X_1,X_2,... be independent identically distributed random elements of a compact group G. We discuss the speed of convergence of the law of the product X_l*...*X_1 to the Haar measure. We give poly-log estimates for certain finite groups and for compact semi-simple Lie groups. We improve earlier results of Solovay, Kitaev, Gamburd, Shahshahani and Dinai.

Exponential approximation and Stein's method of exchangeable pairs
We derive a new result for exponential approximation using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs. As an application, an exponential limit theorem with error term is derived for |Tr(U)|^2, where Tr(U) denotes the trace of a matrix chosen from the Haar measure of the unitary group U(n,C).

Extremal Lipschitz functions in the deviation inequalities from the mean
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an optimal deviation from the mean upper bound \begin{equation} D(x)\=\sup_{f\in \F}μ\{f-\E_μ f\geq x\},\qquad\ \text{for}\ x\in\R\label{abstr} \end{equation} where $\F$ is the class of the integrable, Lipschitz functions on probability metric (product) spaces. As corollaries we get exact solutions of $\eqref{abstr}$ for Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$ with a geodesic distance and a normalized Haar measure, for $\R^n$ equipped with a Gaussian measure and for the multidimensional cube, rectangle, torus or Diamond graph equipped with uniform measure and Hamming distance. We also prove that in general probability metric spaces the $\sup$ in $\eqref{abstr}$ is achieved on a family of distance functions.

An inverse theorem: when the measure of the sumset is the sum of the measures in a locally compact abelian group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the pairs of subsets (A,B) of a locally compact abelian group satisfying m(A+B)=m(A)+m(B), where m is Haar measure. This generalizes a result of M. Kneser classifying such pairs under the additional assumption that G is compact and connected. Our proof combines Kneser's proof with arguments of D. Grynkiewicz, who classified the pairs of subsets (A,B) of abelian groups satisfying |A+B|=|A|+|B|, where |A| is the cardinality of A.
