On the c-differential uniformity of certain maps over finite fields
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography, Volume 89, pp. 221-239, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We give some classes of power maps with low $c$-differential uniformity over finite fields of odd characteristic, {for $c=-1$}. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a linearized polynomial to be a perfect $c$-nonlinear function and investigate conditions when perturbations of perfect $c$-nonlinear (or not) function via an arbitrary Boolean or $p$-ary function is perfect $c$-nonlinear. In the process, we obtain a class of polynomials that are perfect $c$-nonlinear for all $c\neq 1$, in every characteristic. The affine, extended affine and CCZ-equivalence is also looked at, as it relates to $c$-differential uniformity.

A condition for scattered linearized polynomials involving Dickson matrices
Published in J. Geom. (2019) 110:50 • View PublicationBIB
A linearized polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ is called scattered when for any $t,x\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$, the condition $xf(t)-tf(x)=0$ holds if and only if $x$ and $t$ are $\mathbb F_q$-linearly dependent. General conditions for linearized polynomials over $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ to be scattered can be deduced from the recent results in [4,7,15,19]. Some of them are based on the Dickson matrix associated with a linearized polynomial. Here a new condition involving Dickson matrices is stated. This condition is then applied to the Lunardon-Polverino binomial $x^{q^s}+δx^{q^{n-s}}$, allowing to prove that for any $n$ and $s$, if $\mathbb N_{q^n/q}(δ)=1$, then the binomial is not scattered. Also, a necessary and sufficient condition for $x^{q^s}+bx^{q^{2s}}$ to be scattered is shown which is stated in terms of a special plane algebraic curve.

On the number of roots of some linearized polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linearized polynomials appear in many different contexts, such as rank metric codes, cryptography and linear sets, and the main issue regards the characterization of the number of roots from their coefficients. Results of this type have been already proved in [7,10,24]. In this paper we provide bounds and characterizations on the number of roots of linearized polynomials of this form \[ ax+b_0x^σ+b_1x^{σq^n}+b_2x^{σq^{2n}}+\ldots+b_{t-1}x^{σq^{n(t-1)}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^{nt}}[x], \] with $σ$ a generator of the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}\colon\mathbb{F}_q)$. Also, we characterize the number of roots of such polynomials directly from their coefficients, dealing with matrices which are much smaller than the relative Dickson matrices and the companion matrices used in the previous papers. Furthermore, we develop a method to find explicitly the roots of a such polynomial by finding the roots of a $q^n$-polynomial. Finally, as an applications of the above results, we present a family of linear sets of the projective line whose points have a small spectrum of possible weights, containing most of the known families of scattered linear sets. In particular, we carefully study the linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$ presented in [9].

MRD Codes: Constructions and Connections
This preprint is of a chapter to appear in {\it Combinatorics and finite fields: Difference sets, polynomials, pseudorandomness and applications. Radon Series on Computational and Applied Mathematics}, K.-U. Schmidt and A. Winterhof (eds.). Rank-metric codes are codes consisting of matrices with entries in a finite field, with the distance between two matrices being the rank of their difference. Codes with maximum size for a fixed minimum distance are called Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes. Such codes were constructed and studied independently by Delsarte (1978), Gabidulin (1985), Roth (1991), and Cooperstein (1998). Rank-metric codes have seen renewed interest in recent years due to their applications in random linear network coding. MRD codes also have interesting connections to other topics such as semifields (finite nonassociative division algebras), finite geometry, linearized polynomials, and cryptography. In this chapter we will survey the known constructions and applications of MRD codes, and present some open problems.

Weight distribution of cyclic codes defined by quadratic forms and related curves
We consider cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_\mathcal{L}$ associated to quadratic trace forms in $m$ variables $Q_R(x) = \operatorname{Tr}_{q^m/q}(xR(x))$ determined by a family $\mathcal{L}$ of $q$-linearized polynomials $R$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$, and three related codes $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{L},0}$, $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{L},1}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{L},2}$. We describe the spectra for all these codes when $\mathcal{L}$ is an even rank family, in terms of the distribution of ranks of the forms $Q_R$ in the family $\mathcal{L}$, and we also compute the complete weight enumerator for $\mathcal{C}_\mathcal{L}$. In particular, considering the family $\mathcal{L} = \langle x^{q^\ell} \rangle$, with $\ell$ fixed in $\mathbb{N}$, we give the weight distribution of four parametrized families of cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_\ell$, $\mathcal{C}_{\ell,0}$, $\mathcal{C}_{\ell,1}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{\ell,2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with zeros $\{ α^{-(q^\ell+1)} \}$, $\{ 1,\, α^{-(q^\ell+1)} \}$, $\{ α^{-1},\,α^{-(q^\ell+1)} \}$ and $\{ 1,\,α^{-1},\,α^{-(q^\ell+1)}\}$ respectively, where $q = p^s$ with $p$ prime, $α$ is a generator of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^*$ and $m/(m,\ell)$ is even. Finally, we give simple necessary and sufficient conditions for Artin-Schreier curves $y^p-y = xR(x) + βx$, $p$ prime, associated to polynomials $R \in \mathcal{L}$ to be optimal. We then obtain several maximal and minimal such curves in the case $\mathcal{L} = \langle x^{p^\ell}\rangle$ and $\mathcal{L} = \langle x^{p^\ell}, x^{p^{3\ell}} \rangle$.

Planar Polynomials arising from Linearized polynomials
In this paper we construct planar polynomials of the type $f_{A,B}(x)=x(x^{q^2}+Ax^{q}+Bx)\in \mathbb{F}_{q^3}[x]$, with $A,B \in \mathbb{F}_{q}$. In particular we completely classify the pairs $(A,B)\in \mathbb{F}_{q}^2$ such that $f_{A,B}(x)$ is planar using connections with algebraic curves over finite fields.
A characterization of linearized polynomials with maximum kernel
Published in Finite Fields Appl. 56 (2019) 109-130 • View PublicationBIB
We provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the coefficients of a $q$-polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which ensure that the number of distinct roots of $f$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ equals the degree of $f$. We say that these polynomials have maximum kernel. As an application we study in detail $q$-polynomials of degree $q^{n-2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which have maximum kernel and for $n\leq 6$ we list all $q$-polynomials with maximum kernel. We also obtain information on the splitting field of an arbitrary $q$-polynomial. Analogous results are proved for $q^s$-polynomials as well, where $\gcd(s,n)=1$.

The minimum size of a linear set
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we first determine the minimum possible size of an Fq-linear set of rank k in PG(1, q^n). We obtain this result by relating it to the number of directions determined by a linearized polynomial whose domain is restricted to a subspace. We then use this result to find a lower bound on the number of points in an Fq- linear set of rank k in PG(2, q^n). In the case k = n, this confirms a conjecture by Sziklai in [9].
A Carlitz type result for linearized polynomials

For an arbitrary $q$-polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ we study the problem of finding those $q$-polynomials $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ for which the image sets of $f(x)/x$ and $g(x)/x$ coincide. For $n\leq 5$ we provide sufficient and necessary conditions and then apply our result to study maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$.

Compositional inverses, complete mappings, orthogonal Latin squares and bent functions
We study compositional inverses of permutation polynomials, complete mappings, mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and bent vectorial functions. Recently it was obtained in [33] the compositional inverses of linearized permutation binomials over finite fields. It was also noted in [29] that computing inverses of bijections of subspaces have applications in determining the compositional inverses of certain permutation classes related to linearized polynomials. In this paper we obtain compositional inverses of a class of linearized binomials permuting the kernel of the trace map. As an application of this result, we give the compositional inverse of a class of complete mappings. This complete mapping class improves upon a recent construction given in [34]. We also construct recursively a class of complete mappings involving multi-trace functions. Finally we use these complete mappings to derive a set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and to construct a class of $p$-ary bent vectorial functions from the Maiorana-McFarland class.

Switchings of semifield multiplications

Let $B(X,Y)$ be a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which defines an $\mathbb{F}_q$-bilinear form on the vector space $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, and let $ξ$ be a nonzero element in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. In this paper, we consider for which $B(X,Y)$, the binary operation $xy+B(x,y)ξ$ defines a (pre)semifield multiplication on $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. We prove that this question is equivalent to finding $q$-linearized polynomials $L(X)\in\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[X]$ such that $Tr_{q^n/q}(L(x)/x)\neq 0$ for all $x\in\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$. For $n\le 4$, we present several families of $L(X)$ and we investigate the derived (pre)semifields. When $q$ equals a prime $p$, we show that if $n>\frac{1}{2}(p-1)(p^2-p+4)$, $L(X)$ must be $a_0 X$ for some $a_0\in\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ satisfying $Tr_{q^n/q}(a_0)\neq 0$. Finally, we include a natural connection with certain cyclic codes over finite fields, and we apply the Hasse-Weil-Serre bound for algebraic curves to prove several necessary conditions for such kind of $L(X)$.
