A sporadic strongly regular graph with parameters $(120,56,28,24)$ from a primitive action of the symmetric group on $7$ elements
There are up to isomorphism exactly three strongly regular graphs with parameters $(120,56,28,24)$ whose automorphism group acts primitively on the vertices. Two of these graphs belong to classical families: one is the non-orthogonality graph on anisotropic points of the hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal Q^+(7,2)$, and the other one belongs to the Johnson scheme. The third one is not well understood. In this paper, we give a description of this graph in terms of ovoids and spreads of $\mathcal Q^+(7,2)$, or equivalently in terms of overlarge sets of Steiner systems with parameters $(3,4,8)$.
A note on the classification of classical distance-regular graphs of negative type and the non-existence of hemisystems
The goal of this note is to connect some interesting results in the literature on algebraic graph theory and finite geometry. In 1999, Weng gave an almost complete classification of classical distance-regular graphs of negative type with diameter at least 4. He proved that these graphs are either dual polar graphs of Hermitian polar spaces, Hermitian forms graphs, or fall into a last category. It was recently proved by Yian et al. that the latter category does not exist when the diameter equals 3, which by Weng's results proves that they do not exist for bigger diameter. Using a result of Vanhove, this proves that certain hemisystems in Hermitian polar spaces cannot exist.
The largest sets of non-opposite chambers in spherical buildings of type $B$
The investigation into large families of non-opposite flags in finite spherical buildings has been a recent addition to a long line of research in extremal combinatorics, extending classical results in vector and polar spaces. This line of research falls under the umbrella of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) problems, but poses some extra difficulty on the algebraic level compared to aforementioned classical results. From the building theory point of view, it can be seen as a variation of the center conjecture for spherical buildings due to Tits, where we replace the convexity assumption by a maximality condition.
In previous work, general upper bounds on the size of families of non-opposite flags were obtained by applying eigenvalue and representation-theoretic techniques to the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of non-exceptional buildings. More recently, the classification of families reaching this upper bound in type $A_n$, for $n$ odd, was accomplished by Heering, Lansdown, and Metsch. For buildings of type $B$, the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra is more complicated and depends non-trivially on the type and rank of the underlying polar space. Nevertheless, we are able to find a uniform method based on antidesigns and obtain classification results for chambers (i.e.\ maximal flags) in all cases, except type $^2A_{4n-3}$.
Strongly regular graphs from hyperbolic quadrics and their maximal cliques
Let $Q^+(2n+1,q)$ be a hyperbolic quadric of $\PG(2n+1,q)$. Fix a generator $Π$ of the quadric. Define $\cG_n$ as the graph with vertex set the points of $Q^+(2n+1,q)\setminus Π$ and two vertices adjacent if they either span a secant to $Q^+(2n+1,q)$ or a line contained in $Q^+(2n+1,q)$ meeting $Π$ non-trivially. Then such a construction defines a strongly regular graph, which is the complement of a (non-induced) subgraph of the collinearity graph of $Q^+(2n+1,q)$. In this paper, we directly compute the parameters of $\cG_n$, which is cospectral, when $q=2$, to the tangent graph $NO^+(2n+2,2)$, but it is non-isomorphic for $n\geq3$. We also classify the maximal cliques of $\cG_3$ for $q=2$, proving as a by-product the non-isomorphism with the graph $NO^+(8,2)$.
An algebraic approach to Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags in spherical buildings II
We continue our investigation of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) sets of flags in spherical buildings. In previous work, we used the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras to obtain upper bounds on their size. As the next step towards the classification of the maximal EKR-sets, we describe the eigenspaces for the smallest eigenvalue of the opposition graphs. We determine their multiplicity and provide a combinatorial description of spanning sets of these subspaces, from which a complete description of the maximal Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags may potentially be found. This was recently shown to be possible for type $A_n$, $n$ odd, by Heering, Lansdown, and the last author by making use of the current work.
On two non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$
This paper focuses on non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets. A Cameron-Liebler $k$-set is a collection of $k$-spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ or $\mathrm{AG}(n,q)$ admitting a certain parameter $x$, which is dependent on the size of this collection. One of the main research questions remains the (non-)existence of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets with parameter $x$. This paper improves two non-existence results. First we show that the parameter of a non-trivial Cameron-Liebler $k$-set in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ should be larger than $q^{n-\frac{5k}{2}-1}$, which is an improvement of an earlier known lower bound. Secondly, we prove a modular equality on the parameter $x$ of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ with $x<\frac{q^{n-k}-1}{q^{k+1}-1}$, $n\geq 2k+1$, $n-k+1\geq 7$ and $n-k$ even. In the affine case we show a similar result for $n-k+1\geq 3$ and $n-k$ even. This is a generalization of earlier known modular equalities in the projective and affine case.
On $m$-ovoids of $Q^+(7,q)$ with $q$ odd

In this paper, we provide a construction of $(q+1)$-ovoids of the hyperbolic quadric $Q^+(7,q)$, $q$ an odd prime power, by glueing $(q+1)/2$-ovoids of the elliptic quadric $Q^-(5,q)$. This is possible by controlling some intersection properties of (putative) $m$-ovoids of elliptic quadrics. It yields eventually $(q+1)$-ovoids of $Q^+(7,q)$ not coming from a $1$-system. Secondly, we also construct $m$-ovoids for $m \in \{ 2,4,6,8,10\}$ in $Q^+(7,3)$. Therefore we first investigate how to construct spreads of $\pg(3,q)$ that have as many secants to an elliptic quadric as possible.

In this paper we develop non-existence results for $m$-ovoids in the classical polar spaces $Q^-(2r+1,q), W(2r-1,q)$ and $H(2r,q^2)$ for $r>2$. In [4] a lower bound on $m$ for the existence of $m$-ovoids of $H(4,q^2)$ is found by using the connection between $m$-ovoids, two-character sets, and strongly regular graphs. This approach is generalized in [3] for the polar spaces $Q^-(2r+1,q), W(2r-1,q)$ and $H(2r,q^2)$, $r>2$. In [1] an improvement for the particular case $H(4,q^2)$ is obtained by exploiting the algebraic structure of the collinearity graph, and using the characterization of an $m$-ovoid as an intruiging set. In this paper, we use an approach based on geometrical and combinatorial arguments, inspired by the results from [10], to improve the bounds from [3].

We investigate the existence of Boolean degree $d$ functions on the Grassmann graph of $k$-spaces in the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. For $d=1$ several non-existence and classification results are known, and no non-trivial examples are known for $n \geq 5$. This paper focusses on providing a list of examples on the case $d=2$ in general dimension and in particular for $(n, k)=(6,3)$ and $(n,k) = (8, 4)$.
We also discuss connections to the analysis of Boolean functions, regular sets/equitable bipartitions/perfect 2-colorings in graphs, $q$-analogs of designs, and permutation groups. In particular, this represents a natural generalization of Cameron-Liebler line classes.
A modular equality for Cameron-Liebler line classes in projective and affine spaces of odd dimension

In this article we study Cameron-Liebler line classes in PG$(n,q)$ and AG$(n,q)$, objects also known as boolean degree one functions. A Cameron-Liebler line class $\mathcal{L}$ is known to have a parameter $x$ that depends on the size of $\mathcal{L}$. One of the main questions on Cameron-Liebler line classes is the (non)-existence of these sets for certain parameters $x$. In particularly it is proven in [12] for $n=3$, that the parameter $x$ should satisfy a modular equality. This equality excludes about half of the possible parameters. We generalize this result to a modular equality for Cameron-Liebler line classes in PG$(n,q)$, and AG$(n,q)$ respectively. Since it is known that a Cameron-Liebler line class in AG$(n,q)$ is also a Cameron-Liebler line class in its projective closure, we end this paper with proving that the modular equality in AG$(n,q)$ is a stronger condition than the condition for the projective case.

In this article we generalize the concepts that were used in the PhD thesis of Drudge to classify Cameron-Liebler line classes in PG$(n,q), n\geq 3$, to Cameron-Liebler sets of $k$-spaces in PG$(n,q)$ and AG$(n,q)$. In his PhD thesis, Drudge proved that every Cameron-Liebler line class in PG$(n,q)$ intersects every $3$-dimensional subspace in a Cameron-Liebler line class in that subspace. We are using the generalization of this result for sets of $k$-spaces in PG$(n,q)$ and AG$(n,q)$. Together with a basic counting argument this gives a very strong non-existence condition, $n\geq 3k+3$. This condition can also be improved for $k$-sets in AG$(n,q)$, with $n\geq 2k+2$.
An algebraic approach to Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags in spherical buildings

In this paper, oppositeness in spherical buildings is used to define an EKR-problem for flags in projective and polar spaces. A novel application of the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras is developed to prove sharp upper bounds for EKR-sets of flags. In this framework, we can reprove and generalize previous upper bounds for EKR-problems in projective and polar spaces. The bounds are obtained by the application of the Delsarte-Hoffman coclique bound to the opposition graph. The computation of its eigenvalues is due to earlier work by Andries Brouwer and an explicit algorithm is worked out. For the classical geometries, the execution of this algorithm boils down to elementary combinatorics. Connections to building theory, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, classical groups and diagram geometries are briefly discussed. Several open problems are posed throughout and at the end.
The minimum size of a linear set

In this paper, we first determine the minimum possible size of an Fq-linear set of rank k in PG(1, q^n). We obtain this result by relating it to the number of directions determined by a linearized polynomial whose domain is restricted to a subspace. We then use this result to find a lower bound on the number of points in an Fq- linear set of rank k in PG(2, q^n). In the case k = n, this confirms a conjecture by Sziklai in [9].

Some classical polar spaces admit polar spaces of the same rank as embedded polar spaces (often arisen as the intersection of the polar space with a non-tangent hyperplane). In this article we look at sets of generators that behave combinatorially as the set of generators of such an embedded polar space, and we prove that they are the set of generators of an embedded polar space.

A normal rational curve of the $(k-1)$-dimensional projective space over ${\mathbb F}_q$ is an arc of size $q+1$, since any $k$ points of the curve span the whole space. In this article we will prove that if $q$ is odd then a subset of size $3k-6$ of a normal rational curve cannot be extended to an arc of size $q+2$. In fact, we prove something slightly stronger. Suppose that $q$ is odd and $E$ is a $(2k-3)$-subset of an arc $G$ of size $3k-6$. If $G$ projects to a subset of a conic from every $(k-3)$-subset of $E$ then $G$ cannot be extended to an arc of size $q+2$. Stated in terms of error-correcting codes we prove that a $k$-dimensional linear maximum distance separable code of length $3k-6$ over a field ${\mathbb F}_q$ of odd characteristic, which can be extended to a Reed-Solomon code of length $q+1$, cannot be extended to a linear maximum distance separable code of length $q+2$.
Weighted Intriguing Sets in Finite Polar Spaces
We provide new proofs for the non-existence of ovoids in hyperbolic spaces of rank at least four in even characteristic, and for the Hermitian polar space $\mathsf{H}(5, 4)$. We also improve the results of A. Klein on the non-existence of ovoids of Hermitian spaces and hyperbolic quadrics.

In this paper, we describe a new infinite family of $\frac{q^{2}-1}{2}$-tight sets in the hyperbolic quadrics $\mathcal{Q}^{+}(5,q)$, for $q \equiv 5 \mbox{ or } 9 \bmod{12}$. Under the Klein correspondence, these correspond to Cameron--Liebler line classes of ${\rm PG}(3,q)$ having parameter $\frac{q^{2}-1}{2}$. This is the second known infinite family of nontrivial Cameron--Liebler line classes, the first family having been described by Bruen and Drudge with parameter $\frac{q^{2}+1}{2}$ in ${\rm PG}(3,q)$ for all odd $q$.
The study of Cameron--Liebler line classes is closely related to the study of symmetric tactical decompositions of ${\rm PG}(3,q)$ (those having the same number of point classes as line classes). We show that our new examples occur as line classes in such a tactical decomposition when $q \equiv 9 \bmod 12$ (so $q = 3^{2e}$ for some positive integer $e$), providing an infinite family of counterexamples to a conjecture made by Cameron and Liebler in 1982; the nature of these decompositions allows us to also prove the existence of a set of type $\left(\frac{1}{2}(3^{2e}-3^{e}), \frac{1}{2}(3^{2e}+3^{e}) \right)$ in the affine plane ${\rm AG}(2,3^{2e})$ for all positive integers $e$. This proves a conjecture made by Rodgers in his PhD thesis.
