An improved algebraic construction for Ramsey numbers
We provide an explicit algebraic construction showing that, uniformly for integers $3 \leq s \leq t$, as $t \to \infty$, \[
R( s,t ) \geq t^{(1-o(1)) \log s / \log(\log s + 1) }. \] For large fixed $s$, this improves the dependence on $s$ in the general off-diagonal construction of Alon and Pudlák. In particular, $R(33, t) \geq t^{2.1-o(1)}$, to our knowledge, the first explicit construction showing $R(s, t) \geq t^c$ for some fixed $s$ and some $c > 2$. In the diagonal case, it improves the leading constant in the exponent of the classical Frankl--Wilson bound from $1/4$ to $1$, while being almost as simple to describe.
There are no sharply transitive subsets of $\mathrm{SL}(2,q)$ for $q\ge 13$
It was known at least to L.E. Dickson in 1901 that $\mathrm{SL}(2,q)$, in its natural action on $\mathbb{F}_q^2\setminus\{0\}$, has a sharply transitive subgroup only when $q\in\{2,3,5,7,11\}$. For $q$ prime, this result stems from Galois' letter to Chevalier in 1832. We extend this result to sharply transitive subsets of $\mathrm{SL}(2,q)$ and show that they only exist when $q\in\{2,3,5,7,11\}$.
A note on the classification of classical distance-regular graphs of negative type and the non-existence of hemisystems
The goal of this note is to connect some interesting results in the literature on algebraic graph theory and finite geometry. In 1999, Weng gave an almost complete classification of classical distance-regular graphs of negative type with diameter at least 4. He proved that these graphs are either dual polar graphs of Hermitian polar spaces, Hermitian forms graphs, or fall into a last category. It was recently proved by Yian et al. that the latter category does not exist when the diameter equals 3, which by Weng's results proves that they do not exist for bigger diameter. Using a result of Vanhove, this proves that certain hemisystems in Hermitian polar spaces cannot exist.
Improved bounds for the minimum degree of minimal multicolor Ramsey graphs
We provide two novel constructions of $r$ edge-disjoint $K_{k+1}$-free graphs on the same vertex set, each of which has the property that every small induced subgraph contains a complete graph on $k$ vertices. The main novelty of our argument is the combination of an algebraic and a probabilistic coloring scheme, which utilizes the beneficial algebraic and combinatorial properties of the Hermitian unital. These constructions improve on a number of upper bounds on the smallest possible minimum degree of minimal $r$-color Ramsey graphs for the clique $K_{k+1}$ when $r\geq c\frac{k}{\log^2 k}$ and $k$ is large enough.
The largest sets of non-opposite chambers in spherical buildings of type $B$
The investigation into large families of non-opposite flags in finite spherical buildings has been a recent addition to a long line of research in extremal combinatorics, extending classical results in vector and polar spaces. This line of research falls under the umbrella of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) problems, but poses some extra difficulty on the algebraic level compared to aforementioned classical results. From the building theory point of view, it can be seen as a variation of the center conjecture for spherical buildings due to Tits, where we replace the convexity assumption by a maximality condition.
In previous work, general upper bounds on the size of families of non-opposite flags were obtained by applying eigenvalue and representation-theoretic techniques to the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of non-exceptional buildings. More recently, the classification of families reaching this upper bound in type $A_n$, for $n$ odd, was accomplished by Heering, Lansdown, and Metsch. For buildings of type $B$, the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra is more complicated and depends non-trivially on the type and rank of the underlying polar space. Nevertheless, we are able to find a uniform method based on antidesigns and obtain classification results for chambers (i.e.\ maximal flags) in all cases, except type $^2A_{4n-3}$.
Off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for slowly growing hypergraphs
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ and a positive integer $n$, the Ramsey number $r(F,n)$ denotes the minimum $N$ such that every $N$-vertex $F$-free $k$-uniform hypergraph contains an independent set of $n$ vertices. A hypergraph is $\textit{slowly growing}$ if there is an ordering $e_1,e_2,\dots,e_t$ of its edges such that $|e_i \setminus \bigcup_{j = 1}^{i - 1}e_j| \leq 1$ for each $i \in \{2, \ldots, t\}$. We prove that if $k \geq 3$ is fixed and $F$ is any non $k$-partite slowly growing $k$-uniform hypergraph, then for $n\ge2$, \[ r(F,n) = Ω\Bigl(\frac{n^k}{(\log n)^{2k - 2}}\Bigr).\] In particular, we deduce that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(F_5,n)$ is of order $n^{3}/\mbox{polylog}(n)$, where $F_5$ is the triple system $\{123, 124, 345\}$. This is the only 3-uniform Berge triangle for which the polynomial power of its off-diagonal Ramsey number was not previously known. Our constructions use pseudorandom graphs, martingales, and hypergraph containers.
An algebraic approach to Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags in spherical buildings II
We continue our investigation of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) sets of flags in spherical buildings. In previous work, we used the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras to obtain upper bounds on their size. As the next step towards the classification of the maximal EKR-sets, we describe the eigenspaces for the smallest eigenvalue of the opposition graphs. We determine their multiplicity and provide a combinatorial description of spanning sets of these subspaces, from which a complete description of the maximal Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags may potentially be found. This was recently shown to be possible for type $A_n$, $n$ odd, by Heering, Lansdown, and the last author by making use of the current work.
Upper bounds for the number of substructures in finite geometries from the container method
We use techniques from algebraic and extremal combinatorics to derive upper bounds on the number of independent sets in several (hyper)graphs arising from finite geometry. In this way, we obtain asymptotically sharp upper bounds for partial ovoids and EKR-sets of flags in polar spaces, line spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(2r-1,q)$ and plane spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, and caps in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. The latter result extends work due to Roche-Newton and Warren and Bhowmick and Roche-Newton. Finally, we investigate caps in $p$-random subsets of $\mathrm{PG}(r,q)$, which parallels recent work for arcs in projective planes by Bhowmick and Roche-Newton, and by Roche-Newton and Warren, and arcs in projective spaces by Chen, Liu, Nie and Zeng.
Larger Nearly Orthogonal Sets over Finite Fields
For a field $\mathbb{F}$ and integers $d$ and $k$, a set ${\cal A} \subseteq \mathbb{F}^d$ is called $k$-nearly orthogonal if its members are non-self-orthogonal and every $k+1$ vectors of ${\cal A}$ include an orthogonal pair. We prove that for every prime $p$ there exists some $δ= δ(p)>0$, such that for every field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p$ and for all integers $k \geq 2$ and $d \geq k$, there exists a $k$-nearly orthogonal set of at least $d^{δ\cdot k/\log k}$ vectors of $\mathbb{F}^d$. The size of the set is optimal up to the $\log k$ term in the exponent. We further prove two extensions of this result. In the first, we provide a large set ${\cal A}$ of non-self-orthogonal vectors of $\mathbb{F}^d$ such that for every two subsets of ${\cal A}$ of size $k+1$ each, some vector of one of the subsets is orthogonal to some vector of the other. In the second extension, every $k+1$ vectors of the produced set ${\cal A}$ include $\ell+1$ pairwise orthogonal vectors for an arbitrary fixed integer $1 \leq \ell \leq k$. The proofs involve probabilistic and spectral arguments and the hypergraph container method.
Ramsey numbers and the Zarankiewicz problem
Building on recent work of Mattheus and Verstraëte, we establish a general connection between Ramsey numbers of the form $r(F,t)$ for $F$ a fixed graph and a variant of the Zarankiewicz problem asking for the maximum number of 1s in an $m$ by $n$ $0/1$-matrix that does not have any matrix from a fixed finite family $\mathcal{L}(F)$ derived from $F$ as a submatrix. As an application, we give new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers $r(C_5,t)$ and $r(C_7,t)$, namely, $r(C_5,t) = \tildeΩ(t^{\frac{10}{7}})$ and $r(C_7,t) = \tildeΩ(t^{\frac{5}{4}})$. We also show how the truth of a plausible conjecture about Zarankiewicz numbers would allow an approximate determination of $r(C_{2\ell+1}, t)$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 2$.
The asymptotics of $r(4,t)$
For integers $s,t \geq 2$, the Ramsey numbers $r(s,t)$ denote the minimum $N$ such that every $N$-vertex graph contains either a clique of order $s$ or an independent set of order $t$. In this paper we prove \[ r(4,t) = Ω\Bigl(\frac{t^3}{\log^4 \! t}\Bigr) \quad \quad \mbox{ as }t \rightarrow \infty\] which determines $r(4,t)$ up to a factor of order $\log^2 \! t$, and solves a conjecture of Erdős.

A set of edges $Γ$ of a graph $G$ is an edge dominating set if every edge of $G$ intersects at least one edge of $Γ$, and the edge domination number $γ_e(G)$ is the smallest size of an edge dominating set. Expanding on work of Laskar and Wallis, we study $γ_e(G)$ for graphs $G$ which are the incidence graph of some incidence structure $D$, with an emphasis on the case when $D$ is a symmetric design. In particular, we show in this latter case that determining $γ_e(G)$ is equivalent to determining the largest size of certain incidence-free sets of $D$. Throughout, we employ a variety of combinatorial, probabilistic and geometric techniques, supplemented with tools from spectral graph theory.

Given positive integers $e_1,e_2$, let $X_i$ denote the set of $e_i$-dimensional subspaces of a fixed finite vector space $V=(\mathbb{F}_q)^{e_1+e_2}$. Let $Y_i$ be a non-empty subset of $X_i$ and let $α_i=|Y_i|/|X_i|$. We give a positive lower bound, depending only on $α_1,α_2,e_1,e_2,q$, for the proportion of pairs $(S_1,S_2)\in Y_1\times Y_2$ which intersect trivially. As an application, we bound the proportion of pairs of non-degenerate subspaces of complementary dimensions in a finite classical space that intersect trivially. This problem is motivated by an algorithm for recognizing classical groups. By using techniques from algebraic graph theory, we are able to handle orthogonal groups over the field of order 2, a case which had eluded Niemeyer, Praeger, and the first author.

We provide a new family of $K_k$-free pseudorandom graphs with edge density $Θ(n^{-1/(k-1)})$, matching a recent construction due to Bishnoi, Ihringer and Pepe. As in the former result, the idea is to use large subgraphs of polarity graphs, which are defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. While their construction required $q$ to be odd, we will give the first construction with $q$ even.
Moderate Density Parity-Check Codes from Projective Bundles

A new construction for moderate density parity-check (MDPC) codes using finite geometry is proposed. We design a parity-check matrix for this family of binary codes as the concatenation of two matrices: the incidence matrix between points and lines of the Desarguesian projective plane and the incidence matrix between points and ovals of a projective bundle. A projective bundle is a special collection of ovals which pairwise meet in a unique point. We determine minimum distance and dimension of these codes, showing that they have a natural quasi-cyclic structure. In addition, we analyze the error-correction performance within one round of a modification of Gallager's bit-flipping decoding algorithm. In this setting, our codes have the best possible error-correction performance for this range of parameters.
A generalization of the cylinder conjecture for divisible codes

We extend the original cylinder conjecture on point sets in affine three-dimensional space to the more general framework of divisible linear codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and their classification. Through a mix of linear programming, combinatorial techniques and computer enumeration, we investigate the structural properties of these codes. In this way, we can prove a reduction theorem for a generalization of the cylinder conjecture, show some instances where it does not hold and prove its validity for small values of $q$. In particular, we correct a flawed proof for the original cylinder conjecture for $q = 5$ and present the first proof for $q = 7$.

In this paper, oppositeness in spherical buildings is used to define an EKR-problem for flags in projective and polar spaces. A novel application of the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras is developed to prove sharp upper bounds for EKR-sets of flags. In this framework, we can reprove and generalize previous upper bounds for EKR-problems in projective and polar spaces. The bounds are obtained by the application of the Delsarte-Hoffman coclique bound to the opposition graph. The computation of its eigenvalues is due to earlier work by Andries Brouwer and an explicit algorithm is worked out. For the classical geometries, the execution of this algorithm boils down to elementary combinatorics. Connections to building theory, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, classical groups and diagram geometries are briefly discussed. Several open problems are posed throughout and at the end.
A counterexample to Fuglede's conjecture in $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^4$ for all odd primes
In this short note we construct a spectral, non-tiling set of size $2p$ in $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^4$, $p$ odd prime. This example complements a previous counterexample in [arXiv:1509.01090], which existed only for $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$. On the contrary we show that the conjecture does hold in $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^4$.

Let $\perp$ be a unitary polarity of a finite projective plane $π$ of order $q^2$. The unitary polarity graph is the graph with vertex set the points of $π$ where two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if $x \in y^\perp$. We show that a triangle-free induced subgraph of the unitary polarity graph of an arbitrary projective plane has at most $(q^4+q)/2$ vertices. When $π$ is the Desarguesian projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q^2)$ and $q$ is even, we show that the upper bound is asymptotically sharp, by providing an example on $q^4/2$ vertices. Finally, the case when $π$ is the Figueroa plane is discussed.

We investigate the independence number of two graphs constructed from a polarity of $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$. For the first graph under consideration, the Erdős-Rényi graph $ER_q$, we provide an improvement on the known lower bounds on its independence number. In the second part of the paper we consider the Erdős-Rényi hypergraph of triangles $\mathcal{H}_q$. We determine the exact magnitude of the independence number of $\mathcal{H}_q$, $q$ even. This solves a problem posed by Mubayi and Williford.
