Perfect Combinatorial Structures in Coding Theory and Cryptography
This book develops algebraic and combinatorial methods for studying discrete structures. It brings together graph theory, Boolean functions, Fourier analysis on finite groups, coding theory, perfect colorings and perfect codes, association schemes, Latin squares, and related topics. A central theme is the interaction between different representations of the same object: combinatorial, algebraic, spectral, and coding-theoretic. The main mathematical object studied in this book is a perfect coloring of a graph, or, equivalently, an equitable partition of a graph.
The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and computer science, as well as for researchers in discrete mathematics, combinatorics, coding theory, and related fields.
Intersection Arrays of Completely Regular Codes of Covering Radius One in Generalized Petersen Graphs
We determine all possible intersection arrays of completely regular codes of covering radius one in the generalized Petersen graphs \(GP(n,k)\), where \(n\geq 3\) and \(1\leq k<n/2\). In the equivalent language of perfect colorings, this amounts to enumerating all quotient matrices of perfect \(2\)-colorings, up to interchanging the two colors. Since \(GP(n,k)\) is cubic, there are only six possible nontrivial quotient matrices. For each of them, we give necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions on \(n\) and \(k\) for its existence. The feasible cases are realized by explicit periodic colorings. The nonexistence part is obtained by reducing the local coloring conditions to cyclic systems of linear equations and applying a Fourier argument on roots of unity. Together with the previously known cases \(GP(n,2)\) and \(GP(n,3)\), the results give a complete arithmetic classification of quotient matrices, and hence of covering-radius-one completely regular code parameters, in the generalized Petersen family.
Multidimensional convolution matrices and perfect colorings of subspace hypergraphs applied for bent functions and related designs
The main aim of the present paper is to introduce new methods for the study of combinatorial designs related to bent functions. They are based on interpretations of convolution on finite abelian groups as multiplication by a multidimensional matrix and designs as perfect colorings of subspace hypergraphs of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$.
We establish a correspondence between eigenfunctions of convolution matrices and perfect colorings of subspace hypergraphs, show that perfect colorings of subspace hypergraphs admit a characterization in terms of convolution and that two-valued eigenfunctions of subspace hypergraphs correspond to perfect colorings. As applications, we represent partial difference sets, bent and plateaued Boolean functions, spreads, and strong bent partitions of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ as eigenfunctions of convolution matrices and as perfect colorings of subspace hypergraphs. We also find some eigenvalues of convolution matrices over $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ and $\mathbb{F}_3^n$.
Low-degree functions without non-essential arguments
For the Hamming graph $H(n,q)$, where a $q$ is a constant prime power and $n$ grows, we construct perfect colorings without non-essential arguments such that $n$ depends exponentially on the off-diagonal part of the quotient matrix. In particular, we construct unbalanced Boolean ($q=2$) functions such that the number of essential arguments depends exponentially on the degree of the function.

We characterize mixed-level orthogonal arrays in terms of algebraic designs in a special multigraph. We prove a mixed-level analog of the Bierbrauer-Friedman (BF) bound for pure-level orthogonal arrays and show that arrays attaining it are radius-1 completely regular codes (equivalently, intriguing sets, equitable 2-partitions, perfect 2-colorings) in the corresponding multigraph. For the case when the numbers of levels are powers of the same prime number, we characterize, in terms of multispreads, additive mixed-level orthogonal arrays attaining the BF bound. For pure-level orthogonal arrays, we consider versions of the BF bound obtained by replacing the Hamming graph by its polynomial generalization and show that in some cases this gives a new bound.

Symmetric Perfect $2$-colorings on $J(10,3)$
We study perfect $2$-coloring of the Johnson graphs $J(n,3)$ associated with the third largest eigenvalue and symmetric quotient matrix, which exists only when $n \in \{6, 10\}$. We survey the known constructions in the case $n=6$, give a new construction for the two known perfect $2$-colorings in the case $n=10$, and prove that these are the only possible ones.

It is proved that 1) the indicator function of some onefold or multifold independent set in a regular graph is a perfect coloring if and only if the set attain the Delsarte--Hoffman bound; 2) each transversal in a uniform regular hypergraph is an independent set attaining the Delsarte--Hoffman bound in the vertex adjacency multigraph of this hypergraph; 3) combinatorial designs with parameters $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ and similar $q$-designs, difference sets, Hadamard matrices, and bent functions are equivalent to perfect colorings of special graphs and multigraphs, in particular, it is true in the cases of the Johnson graphs $J(n,k)$ for $(k-1)$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs and the Grassmann graphs $J_2(n,2)$ for bent functions.

On multifold perfect codes and some other completely regular codes in the Doob graphs and quaternary Hamming graphs
We consider the problem of existence of perfect $2$-colorings in the Doob graphs $D(m,n)$ and $4$-ary Hamming graphs $H(n,4)$. We characterize all parameters for which multifold $1$-perfect code in $D(m,n)$ exists. Also, we prove that for any pair $(b,c)$ that satisfy standard conditions (Lloyd's and sphere-packing conditions) there is perfect $(b,c)$-coloring in Doob graphs and Hamming graphs if diameter of graph and $n$ are sufficiently large ($n$ not less than $0$, $1$ or $8$ for some cases). Also we obtain some completely regular codes with covering radius $2$.

A perfect $k$-coloring of the Boolean hypercube $Q_n$ is a function from the set of binary words of length $n$ onto a $k$-set of colors such that for any colors $i$ and $j$ every word of color $i$ has exactly $S(i,j)$ neighbors (at Hamming distance $1$) of color $j$, where the coefficient $S(i,j)$ depends only on $i$ and $j$ but not on the particular choice of the word. The $k$-by-$k$ table of all coefficients $S(i,j)$ is called the quotient matrix. We characterize perfect colorings of $Q_n$ of degree at most $3$, that is, with quotient matrix whose all eigenvalues are not less than $n-6$, or, equivalently, such that every color corresponds to a Boolean function represented by a polynomial of degree at most $3$ over $R$. Additionally, we characterize $(n-4)$-correlation-immune perfect colorings of $Q_n$, whose all colors correspond to $(n-4)$-correlation-immune Boolean functions, or, equivalently, all non-main (different from $n$) eigenvalues of the quotient matrix are not greater than $6-n$.

On forced periodicity of perfect colorings
We study forced periodicity of two-dimensional configurations under certain constraints and use an algebraic approach to multidimensional symbolic dynamics in which $d$-dimensional configurations and finite patterns are presented as formal power series and Laurent polynomials, respectively, in $d$ variables. We consider perfect colorings that are configurations such that the number of points of a given color in the neighborhood of any point depends only on the color of the point for some fixed relative neighborhood, and we show that by choosing the alphabet suitably any perfect coloring has a non-trivial annihilator, that is, there exists a Laurent polynomial whose formal product with the power series presenting the perfect coloring is zero. Using known results we obtain a sufficient condition for forced periodicity of two-dimensional perfect colorings. As corollaries of this result we get simple new proofs for known results of forced periodicity on the square and the triangular grids. Moreover, we obtain a new result concerning forced periodicity of perfect colorings in the king grid. We also consider perfect colorings of a particularly simple type: configurations that have low abelian complexity with respect to some shape, and we generalize a result that gives a sufficient condition for such configurations to be necessarily periodic. Also, some algorithmic aspects are considered.
Perfect colorings of hypergraphs
Perfect colorings (equitable partitions) of graphs are extensively studied, while the same concept for hypergraphs attracts much less attention. The aim of this paper is to develop basic notions and properties of perfect colorings for hypergraphs. Firstly, we introduce a multidimensional matrix equation for perfect colorings of hypergraphs and compare this definition with a standard approach based on the incidence graph. Next, we show that the eigenvalues of the parameter matrix of a perfect coloring are eigenvalues of the multidimensional adjacency matrix of a hypergraph. We consider coverings of hypergraphs as a special case of perfect colorings and prove a theorem on the existence of a common covering of two hypergraphs. As an example, we show that a $k$-transversal in a hypergraph corresponds to a perfect coloring and calculate its parameters. At last, we find all perfect $2$-colorings of the Fano's plane hypergraph and compute some eigenvalues of this hypergraph.
On extremal properties of perfect 2-colorings
A coloring of vertices of a graph is called perfect if, for every vertex, the collection of colors of its neighbors depends only on its own color. The correspondent color partition of vertices is called equitable. We note that a number of bounds (Hoffman bound, Cheeger bound, Bierbrauer--Friedman bound and other) is only reached on perfect $2$-colorings. We show that the Expander Mixing Lemma is another example of an inequality that generates a perfect $2$-coloring. We prove a new upper bound for the size of $S\subset V(G)$ with the fixed average internal degree for an amply regular graph $G$. This bound is reached on the set $S$ if and only if $\{S, V(G)\setminus S\}$ is an equitable partition.

We investigate the existence of Boolean degree $d$ functions on the Grassmann graph of $k$-spaces in the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. For $d=1$ several non-existence and classification results are known, and no non-trivial examples are known for $n \geq 5$. This paper focusses on providing a list of examples on the case $d=2$ in general dimension and in particular for $(n, k)=(6,3)$ and $(n,k) = (8, 4)$.
We also discuss connections to the analysis of Boolean functions, regular sets/equitable bipartitions/perfect 2-colorings in graphs, $q$-analogs of designs, and permutation groups. In particular, this represents a natural generalization of Cameron-Liebler line classes.

Given a perfect coloring of a graph, we prove that the $L_1$ distance between two rows of the adjacency matrix of the graph is not less than the $L_1$ distance between the corresponding rows of the parameter matrix of the coloring. With the help of an algebraic approach, we deduce corollaries of this result for perfect $2$-colorings, perfect colorings in distance-$l$ graphs and in distance-regular graphs. We also provide examples when the obtained property reject several putative parameter matrices of perfect colorings in infinite graphs.

We describe the computer-aided classification of equitable partitions of the $12$-cube with quotient matrix $[[2,10],[6,6]]$, or, equivalently, simple orthogonal arrays OA$(1536,12,2,7)$, or order-$7$ correlation-immune Boolean functions in $12$ variables with $1536$ ones (which completes the classification of unbalanced order-$7$ correlation-immune Boolean functions in $12$ variables). We find that there are $103$ equivalence classes of the considered objects, and there are only two almost-OA$(1536,12,2,8)$ among them. Additionally, we find that there are $40$ equivalence classes of pairs of disjoint simple OA$(1536,12,2,7)$ (equivalently, equitable partitions of the $12$-cube with quotient matrix $[[2,6,4], [6,2,4], [6,6,0]]$) and discuss the existence of a non-simple OA$(1536,12,2,7)$.

A perfect coloring (equivalent concepts are equitable partition and partition design) of a graph $G$ is a function $f$ from the set of vertices onto some finite set (of colors) such that every node of color $i$ has exactly $S(i,j)$ neighbors of color $j$, where $S(i,j)$ are constants, forming the matrix $S$ called quotient. If $S$ is an adjacency matrix of some simple graph $T$ on the set of colors, then $f$ is called a covering of the target graph $T$ by the cover graph $G$. We characterize all coverings by the infinite square grid, proving that every such coloring is either orbit (that is, corresponds to the orbit partition under the action of some group of graph automorphisms) or has twin colors (that is, two colors such that unifying them keeps the coloring perfect). The case of twin colors is separately classified.

A coloring of vertices of a given graph is called perfect if the color structure of each ball of radius $1$ in the graph depends only on the color of the ball center. Let $n$ be a positive integer. We consider a lexicographic product of the infinite path graph and a graph $G$ that can be either the complete or empty graph on $n$ vertices. We give a complete description of perfect colorings with an arbitrary number of colors of such graph products.

We consider the problem of existence of perfect $2$-colorings (equitable $2$-partitions) of Hamming graphs with given parameters. We start with conditions on parameters of graphs and colorings that are necessary for their existence. Next we observe known constructions of perfect colorings and propose some new ones giving new parameters. At last, we deduce which parameters of colorings are covered by these constructions and give tables of admissible parameters of $2$-colorings in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$ for small $n$ and $q$. Using the connection with perfect colorings, we construct an orthogonal array OA(2048,7,4,5).
