Algebraic properties of perfect structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
A perfect structure is a triple $(M,P,S)$ of matrices $M, P$ and $S$ of consistent sizes such that $MP = PS$. Perfect structures comprise similar matrices, eigenvectors, perfect colorings (equitable partitions) and graph coverings. In this paper we study general algebraic properties of perfect structures and characterize all perfect structures with identity or unity matrix $M$. Next, we consider a graph product generalizing most standard products (e.g. Cartesian, tensor, normal, lexicographic graph products). For this product we propose a construction of perfect structures and prove that it can be reversed for eigenvectors. Finally, we apply obtained results to calculate the spectra of several classes of graphs and to prove some properties of perfect colorings.

On the OA(1536,13,2,7) and related orthogonal arrays
Published in Discrete Math. 343(2) 2020, paper 111659, 1-11 • View PublicationBIB
With a computer-aided approach based on the connection with equitable partitions, we establish the uniqueness of the orthogonal array OA$(1536,13,2,7)$, constructed in [D.G.Fon-Der-Flaass. Perfect $2$-Colorings of a Hypercube, Sib. Math. J. 48 (2007), 740-745] as an equitable partition of the $13$-cube with quotient matrix $[[0,13],[3,10]]$. By shortening the OA$(1536,13,2,7)$, we obtain $3$ inequivalent orthogonal arrays OA$(768,12,2,6)$, which is a complete classification for these parameters too. After our computing, the first parameters of unclassified binary orthogonal arrays OA$(N,n,2,t)$ attending the Friedman bound $N\ge 2^n(1-n/2(t+1))$ are OA$(2048,14,2,7)$. Such array can be obtained by puncturing any binary $1$-perfect code of length $15$. We construct orthogonal arrays with these and similar parameters OA$(N=2^{n-m+1},n=2^m-2,2,t=2^{m-1}-1)$, $m\ge 4$, that are not punctured $1$-perfect codes. Additionally, we prove that any orthogonal array OA$(N,n,2,t)$ with even $t$ attending the bound $N \ge 2^n(1-(n+1)/2(t+2))$ induces an equitable $3$-partition of the $n$-cube.

The perfect 2-colorings of infinite circulant graphs with a continuous set of odd distances
Published in Siberian Èlectronic Mathematical Reports 17 (2020) pp. 590-603 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex coloring of a given simple graph $G=(V,E)$ with $k$ colors ($k$-coloring) is a map from its vertex set to the set of integers $\{1,2,3,\dots, k\}$. A coloring is called perfect if the multiset of colors appearing on the neighbours of any vertex depends only on the color of the vertex. We consider perfect colorings of Cayley graphs of the additive group of integers with generating set $\{1,-1,3,-3,5,-5,\dots, 2n-1,1-2n\}$ for a positive integer $n$. We enumerate perfect $2$-colorings of the graphs under consideration and state the conjecture generalizing the main result to an arbitrary number of colors.

Local distributions for eigenfunctions and for perfect colorings of q-ary hypercube
Under study are the eigenfunctions and perfect colorings of the graph of $n$-dimensional $q$-ary Hamming space. We obtain the interdependence of local distributions of an eigenfunction in two orthogonal faces. We prove also an analogous result for perfect colorings.

Perfect colorings of the 12-cube that attain the bound on correlation immunity
Published in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports 4, 2007, 292-295 [in Russian, with English Abstract] • Search Publication
We construct perfect $2$-colorings of the $12$-hypercube that attain our recent bound on the dimension of arbitrary correlation immune functions. We prove that such colorings with parameters $(x,12-x,4+x,8-x$) exist if $x=0$, $2$, $3$ and do not exist if $x=1$. This is a translation into English of the original paper by D. G. Fon-Der-Flaass, "Perfect colorings of the $12$-cube that attain the bound on correlation immunity", published in Russian in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, vol. 4 (2007) 292-295.

On perfect 2-colorings of the q-ary n-cube

A coloring of the $q$-ary $n$-dimensional cube (hypercube) is called perfect if, for every $n$-tuple $x$, the collection of the colors of the neighbors of $x$ depends only on the color of $x$. A Boolean-valued function is called correlation-immune of degree $n-m$ if it takes the value 1 the same number of times for each $m$-dimensional face of the hypercube. Let $f=χ^S$ be a characteristic function of some subset $S$ of hypercube. In the present paper it is proven the inequality $ρ(S)q({\rm cor}(f)+1)\leq α(S)$, where ${\rm cor}(f)$ is the maximum degree of the correlation immunity of $f$, $α(S)$ is the average number of neighbors in the set $S$ for $n$-tuples in the complement of a set $S$, and $ρ(S)=|S|/q^n$ is the density of the set $S$. Moreover, the function $f$ is a perfect coloring if and only if we obtain an equality in the above formula. Also we find new lower bound for the cardinality of components of perfect coloring and 1-perfect code in the case $q>2$. On the binary codes with parameters of triply-shortened 1-perfect codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 64(3) 2012, 275-283 • View PublicationBIB
We study properties of binary codes with parameters close to the parameters of 1-perfect codes. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m-1}, 4)$ code $C$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened extended Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable partition of the $n$-cube into six cells. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-4, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $D$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable family (but not a partition) from six cells. As a corollary, the codes $C$ and $D$ are completely semiregular; i.e., the weight distribution of such a code depends only on the minimal and maximal codeword weights and the code parameters. Moreover, if $D$ is self-complementary, then it is completely regular. As an intermediate result, we prove, in terms of distance distributions, a general criterion for a partition of the vertices of a graph (from rather general class of graphs, including the distance-regular graphs) to be equitable. On the connection between correlation-immune functions and perfect 2-colorings of the Boolean n-cube
A coloring of the Boolean $n$-cube is called perfect if, for every vertex $x$, the collection of the colors of the neighbors of $x$ depends only on the color of $x$. A Boolean function is called correlation-immune of degree $n-m$ if it takes the value 1 the same number of times for each $m$-face of the Boolean $n$-cube. In the present paper it is proven that each Boolean function $χ^S$ ($S\subset E^n$) satisfies the inequality $${\rm nei}(S)+ 2({\rm cor}(S)+1)(1-ρ(S))\leq n,$$ where ${\rm cor}(S)$ is the maximum degree of the correlation immunity of $χ^S$, ${\rm nei} (S)= \frac{1}{|S|}\sum\limits_{x\in S}|B(x)\cap S|-1$ is the average number of neighbors in the set $S$ for vertices in $S$, and $ρ(S)=|S|/2^n$ is the density of the set $S$. Moreover, the function $χ^S$ is a perfect coloring if and only if we obtain an equality in the above formula. Keywords: hypercube, perfect coloring, perfect code, correlation-immune function.

Perfectly Colorable Graphs
Published in Information Processing Letters 111, 19, 960 - 961, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We define a perfect coloring of a graph $G$ as a proper coloring of $G$ such that every connected induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ uses exactly $ω(H)$ many colors where $ω(H)$ is the clique number of $H$. A graph is perfectly colorable if it admits a perfect coloring. We show that the class of perfectly colorable graphs is exactly the class of perfect paw-free graphs. It follows that perfectly colorable graphs can be recognized and colored in linear time.

On the binary codes with parameters of doubly-shortened 1-perfect codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 57(2) 2010, 181-194 • View PublicationBIB
We show that any binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $C_1$ is a part of an equitable partition (perfect coloring) $\{C_1,C_2,C_3,C_4\}$ of the $n$-cube with the parameters $((0,1,n-1,0)(1,0,n-1,0)(1,1,n-4,2)(0,0,n-1,1))$. Now the possibility to lengthen the code $C_1$ to a 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ is equivalent to the possibility to split the part $C_4$ into two distance-3 codes or, equivalently, to the biparticity of the graph of distances 1 and 2 of $C_4$. In any case, $C_1$ is uniquely embeddable in a twofold 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ with some structural restrictions, where by a twofold 1-perfect code we mean that any vertex of the space is within radius 1 from exactly two codewords.

On weight distributions of perfect colorings and completely regular codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 61(3) 2011, 315-329 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex coloring of a graph is called "perfect" if for any two colors $a$ and $b$, the number of the color-$b$ neighbors of a color-$a$ vertex $x$ does not depend on the choice of $x$, that is, depends only on $a$ and $b$ (the corresponding partition of the vertex set is known as "equitable"). A set of vertices is called "completely regular" if the coloring according to the distance from this set is perfect. By the "weight distribution" of some coloring with respect to some set we mean the information about the number of vertices of every color at every distance from the set. We study the weight distribution of a perfect coloring (equitable partition) of a graph with respect to a completely regular set (in particular, with respect to a vertex if the graph is distance-regular). We show how to compute this distribution by the knowledge of the color composition over the set. For some partial cases of completely regular sets, we derive explicit formulas of weight distributions. Since any (other) completely regular set itself generates a perfect coloring, this gives universal formulas for calculating the weight distribution of any completely regular set from its parameters. In the case of Hamming graphs, we prove a very simple formula for the weight enumerator of an arbitrary perfect coloring. Codewords: completely regular code; equitable partition; partition design; perfect coloring; perfect structure; regular partition; weight distribution; weight enumerator.

On perfect colorings of the halved 24-cube

A vertex 2-coloring of a graph is said to be perfect with parameters $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1}^k$ if for every $i,j\in\{1,...,k\}$ every vertex of color $i$ is adjacent with exactly $a_{ij}$ vertices of color $j$. We consider the perfect 2-colorings of the distance-2 graph of the 24-cube $\{0,1\}^{24}$ with parameters $((20+c,256-c)(c,276-c))$ (i.e., with eigenvalue 20). We prove that such colorings exist for all $c$ from 1 to 128 except 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13 and do not exist for $c=1, 2, 4, 5, 7$.
