On the Number of Affine Equivalence Classes of Boolean Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R(r,n)$ be the $r$th order Reed-Muller code of length $2^n$. The affine linear group $\text{AGL}(n,\Bbb F_2)$ acts naturally on $R(r,n)$. We derive two formulas concerning the number of orbits of this action: (i) an explicit formula for the number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)$, and (ii) an asymptotic formula for the number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)/R(1,n)$. The number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)$ has been numerically computed by several authors for $n\le 10$; result (i) is a theoretic solution to the question. Result (ii) answers a question by MacWilliams and Sloane.

The Möbius Function of the Affine Linear Group $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$
Let $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ denote the affine linear group of dimension one over the finite field $\Bbb F_q$. We determine the Möbius function of the lattice of subgroups of $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$.

Optimal Binary Constant Weight Codes and Affine Linear Groups over Finite Fields

Let $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ be the affine linear group of dimension $1$ over a finite field $\Bbb F_q$. $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ acts sharply 2-transitively on $\Bbb F_q$. Given $S<\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ and an integer $k$ with $1\le k\le q$, does there exist a subset $B\subset\Bbb F_q$ with $|B|=k$ such that $S=\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)_B$? ($\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)_B=\{σ\in\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q):σ(B)=B\}$ is the stabilizer of $B$ in $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$.) We derive a sum that holds the answer to this question. This result determines all possible parameters of binary constant weight codes that are constructed from the action of $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ on $\Bbb F_q$ to meet the Johnson bound. Consequently, the values of the function $A_2(n,d,w)$ are determined for many parameters, where $A_2(n,d,w)$ is the maximum number of codewords in a binary constant weight code of length $n$, weight $w$ and minimum distance $\ge d$.

On the DLW Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007, Dmytrenko, Lazebnik and Williford posed two related conjectures about polynomials over finite fields. Conjecture~1 is a claim about the uniqueness of certain monomial graphs. Conjecture~2, which implies Conjecture~1, deals with certain permutation polynomials of finite fields. Two natural strengthenings of Conjecture~2, referred to as Conjectures~A and B in the present paper, were also insinuated. In a recent development, Conjecture~2 and hence Conjecture~1 have been confirmed. The present paper gives a proof of Conjecture~A.

Permutation Polynomials of the form ${\tt X}^r(a+{\tt X}^{2(q-1)})$ --- A Nonexistence Result
Let $f={\tt X}^r(a+{\tt X}^{2(q-1)})\in{\Bbb F}_{q^2}[{\tt X}]$, where $a\in{\Bbb F}_{q^2}^*$ and $r\ge 1$. The parameters $(q,r,a)$ for which $f$ is a permutation polynomial (PP) of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$ have been determined in the following cases: (i) $a^{q+1}=1$; (ii) $r=1$; (iii) $r=3$. These parameters together form three infinite families. For $r>3$ (there is a good reason not to consider $r=2$) and $a^{q+1}\ne 1$, computer search suggested that $f$ is not a PP of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$ when $q$ is not too small relative to $r$. In the present paper, we prove that this claim is true. In particular, for each $r>3$, there are only finitely many $(q,a)$, where $a^{q+1}\ne 1$, for which $f$ is a PP of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$.

Permutation Polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ of the form $a{\tt X}+{\tt X}^{r(q-1)+1}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $q$ be a prime power, $2\le r\le q$, and $f=a{\tt X}+{\tt X}^{r(q-1)+1}\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[{\tt X}]$, where $a\ne 0$. The conditions on $r,q,a$ that are necessary and sufficient for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial (PP) of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$ are not known. (Such conditions are known under an additional assumption that $a^{q+1}=1$.) In this paper, we prove the following: (i) If $f$ is a PP of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$, then $\text{gcd}(r,q+1)>1$ and $(-a)^{(q+1)/\text{gcd}(r,q+1)}\ne 1$. (ii) For a fixed $r>2$ and subject to the conditions that $q+1\equiv 0\pmod r$ and $a^{q+1}\ne 1$, there are only finitely many $(q,a)$ for which $f$ is a PP of ${\Bbb F}_{q^2}$. Combining (i) and (ii) confirms a recent conjecture regarding the type of permutation binomial considered here.
Proof of a conjecture on monomial graphs

Let $e$ be a positive integer, $p$ be an odd prime, $q=p^{e}$, and $\Bbb F_q$ be the finite field of $q$ elements. Let $f,g \in \Bbb F_q [X,Y]$. The graph $G=G_q(f,g)$ is a bipartite graph with vertex partitions $P=\Bbb F_q^3$ and $L=\Bbb F_q^3$, and edges defined as follows: a vertex $(p)=(p_1,p_2,p_3)\in P$ is adjacent to a vertex $[l] = [l_1,l_2,l_3]\in L$ if and only if $p_2 + l_2 = f(p_1,l_1)$ and $p_3 + l_3 = g(p_1,l_1)$. Motivated by some questions in finite geometry and extremal graph theory, Dmytrenko, Lazebnik and Williford conjectured in 2007 that if $f$ and $g$ are both monomials and $G$ has no cycle of length less than eight, then $G$ is isomorphic to the graph $G_q(XY,XY^2)$. They proved several instances of the conjecture by reducing it to the property of polynomials $A_k= X^k[(X+1)^k - X^k]$ and $B_k= [(X+1)^{2k} - 1] X^{q-1-k} - 2X^{q-1}$ being permutation polynomials of $\Bbb F_q$. In this paper we prove the conjecture by obtaining new results on the polynomials $A_k$ and $B_k$, which are also of interest on their own.

Switchings of semifield multiplications

Let $B(X,Y)$ be a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which defines an $\mathbb{F}_q$-bilinear form on the vector space $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, and let $ξ$ be a nonzero element in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. In this paper, we consider for which $B(X,Y)$, the binary operation $xy+B(x,y)ξ$ defines a (pre)semifield multiplication on $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. We prove that this question is equivalent to finding $q$-linearized polynomials $L(X)\in\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[X]$ such that $Tr_{q^n/q}(L(x)/x)\neq 0$ for all $x\in\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$. For $n\le 4$, we present several families of $L(X)$ and we investigate the derived (pre)semifields. When $q$ equals a prime $p$, we show that if $n>\frac{1}{2}(p-1)(p^2-p+4)$, $L(X)$ must be $a_0 X$ for some $a_0\in\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ satisfying $Tr_{q^n/q}(a_0)\neq 0$. Finally, we include a natural connection with certain cyclic codes over finite fields, and we apply the Hasse-Weil-Serre bound for algebraic curves to prove several necessary conditions for such kind of $L(X)$.

Determination of a Type of Permutation Trinomials over Finite Fields

Let $f=a{\tt x} +b{\tt x}^q+{\tt x}^{2q-1}\in\Bbb F_q[{\tt x}]$. We find explicit conditions on $a$ and $b$ that are necessary and sufficient for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$. This result allows us to solve a related problem. Let $g_{n,q}\in\Bbb F_p[{\tt x}]$ ($n\ge 0$, $p=\text{char}\,\Bbb F_q$) be the polynomial defined by the functional equation $\sum_{c\in\Bbb F_q}({\tt x}+c)^n=g_{n,q}({\tt x}^q-{\tt x})$. We determine all $n$ of the form $n=q^α-q^β-1$, $α>β\ge 0$, for which $g_{n,q}$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$.

A Class of Permutation Binomials over Finite Fields

Let $q>2$ be a prime power and $f={\tt x}^{q-2}+t{\tt x}^{q^2-q-1}$, where $t\in\Bbb F_q^*$. It was recently conjectured that $f$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if one of the following holds: (i) $t=1$, $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$; (ii) $t=-3$, $q\equiv \pm1\pmod{12}$; (iii) $t=3$, $q\equiv -1\pmod 6$. We confirm this conjecture in the present paper.
A New Approach to Permutation Polynomials over Finite Fields, II

Let $p$ be a prime and $q$ a power of $p$. For $n\ge 0$, let $g_{n,q}\in\Bbb F_p[{\tt x}]$ be the polynomial defined by the functional equation $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}({\tt x}+a)^n=g_{n,q}({\tt x}^q-{\tt x})$. When is $g_{n,q}$ a permutation polynomial (PP) of $\Bbb F_{q^e}$? This turns out to be a challenging question with remarkable breath and depth, as shown in the predecessor of the present paper. We call a triple of positive integers $(n,e;q)$ {\em desirable} if $g_{n,q}$ is a PP of $\Bbb F_{q^e}$. In the present paper, we find many new classes of desirable triples whose corresponding PPs were previously unknown. Several new techniques are introduced for proving a given polynomial is a PP.

Galkin Quandles, Pointed Abelian Groups, and Sequence $A000712$
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each pointed abelian group $(A,c)$, there is an associated {\em Galkin quandle} $G(A,c)$ which is an algebraic structure defined on $\Bbb Z_3\times A$ that can be used to construct knot invariants. It is known that two finite Galkin quandles are isomorphic if and only if their associated pointed abelian groups are isomorphic. In this paper we classify all finite pointed abelian groups. We show that the number of nonisomorphic pointed abelian groups of order $q^n$ ($q$ prime) is $\sum_{0\le m\le n}p(m)p(n-m)$, where $p(m)$ is the number of partitions of integer $m$.

Third Power of the Reversed Dickson Polynomial over Finite Fields
Let $D_n(1,x)$ be the $n$th reversed Dickson polynomial. The power sums $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^i$, $i=1,2$, have been determined recently. In this paper we give an evaluation of the sum $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^3$. This result implies new necessary conditions for $D_n(1,x)$ to be a permutation polynomial over $\Bbb F_q$.

Enumeration of ${\rm AGL}(\frac m3, {\Bbb F}_{p^3})$-Invariant Extended Cyclic Codes

Let $p$ be a prime and let $r, e, m$ be positive integers such that $r|e$ and $e|m$. The enumeration of linear codes of length $p^m$ over ${\Bbb F}_{p^r}$ which are invariant under the affine linear group ${\rm AGL}(\frac me, {\Bbb F}_{p^e})$ is equivalent to the enumeration of certain ideals in a partially ordered set $({\mathcal U}, \prec)$ where ${\mathcal U}=\{0,1,...,\frac me(p-1)\}^e$ and $\prec$ is defined by an $e$-dimensional simplicial cone. When $e=2$, the enumeration problem was solved in an earlier paper. In the present paper, we consider the cases $e=3$. We describe methods for enumerating all ${\rm AGL}(\frac m3, {\Bbb F}_{p^3})$-invariant linear codes of length $p^m$ over ${\Bbb F}_{p^r}$

The Affinity of a Permutation of a Finite Vector Space
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a permutation f of an n-dimensional vector space V over a finite field of order q we let k-affinity(f) denote the number of k-flats X of V such that f(X) is also a k-flat. By k-spectrum(n,q) we mean the set of integers k-affinity(f) where f runs through all permutations of V. The problem of the complete determination of k-spectrum(n,q) seems very difficult except for small or special values of the parameters. However, we are able to establish that k-spectrum(n,q) contains 0 in the following cases: (i) q>2 and 0<k<n; (ii) q=2, 2<k<n; (iii) q=2, k=2, odd n>2. The maximum of k-affinity(f) is, of course, obtained when f is any semi-affine mapping. We conjecture that the next to largest value of k-affinity(f) is when f is a transposition and we are able to prove this when q=2, k=2, n>2 and when q>2, k=1, n>1.

Enumeration of Isomorphism Classes of Extensions of p-adic Fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Ω$ be an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $F$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ contained in $Ω$. Given positive integers $f$ and $e$, the number of extensions $K/F$ contained in $Ω$ with residue degree $f$ and ramification index $e$ was computed by Krasner. This paper is concerned with the number ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ of $F$-isomorphism classes of such extensions. We determine ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ completely when $p^2\nmid e$ and get partial results when $p^2\parallel e$. When $s$ is large, ${\mathfrak I}({\mathbb Q}_p,f,e)$ is equal to the number of isomorphism classes of finite commutative chain rings with residue field ${\mathbb F}_{p^f}$, ramification index $e$, and length $s$.
