Permutation polynomials, projective polynomials, and bijections between $μ_{\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}}$ and $PG(n-1,q)$
Using arbitrary bases for the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, we obtain the generalized Möbius transformations (GMTs), which are a class of bijections between the projective geometry $PG(n-1,q)$ and the set of roots of unity $μ_{\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}}\subseteq\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, where $n\geq 2$ is any integer. We also introduce a class of projective polynomials, using the properties of which we determine the inverses of the GMTs. Moreover, we study the roots of those projective polynomials, which lead to a three-way correspondence between partitions of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^\ast,μ_{\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}}$ and $PG(n-1,q)$. Through this correspondence and the GMTs, we construct permutation polynomials of index $\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$.

Efficient generation of odd order de Bruijn sequence with the same complement and reverse sequences
Experimental results show that, when the order $n$ is odd, there are de Bruijn sequences such that the corresponding complement sequence and the reverse sequence are the same. In this paper, we propose one efficient method to generate such de Bruijn sequences. This solves an open problem asked by Fredricksen forty years ago for showing the existence of such de Bruijn sequences when the odd order $n >1$. Moreover, we refine a characterization of de Bruijn sequences with the same complement and reverse sequences and study the number of these de Bruijn sequences, as well as the distribution of de Bruijn sequences of the maximum linear complexity.

A classification of permutation binomials of the form $x^i+ax$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ for dimensions up to 8
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation polynomials with few terms (especially permutation binomials) attract many people due to their simple algebraic structure. Despite the great interests in the study of permutation binomials, a complete characterization of permutation binomials is still unknown. In this paper, we give a classification of permutation binomials of the form $x^i+ax$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$, where $n\leq 8$ by characterizing three new classes of permutation binomials. In particular one of them has relatively large index $\frac{q^2+q+1}{3}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$.

On constructing bent functions from cyclotomic mappings
We study a new method of constructing Boolean bent functions from cyclotomic mappings. Three generic constructions are obtained by considering different branch functions such as Dillon functions, Niho functions and Kasami functions over multiplicative cosets and additive cosets respectively. As a result, several new explicit infinite families of bent functions and their duals are derived. We demonstrate that some previous constructions are special cases of our simple constructions. In addition, by studying their polynomial forms, we observe that the last construction provides some examples which are EA-inequivalent to five classes of monomials, Dillon type and Niho type polynomials.

Functional graphs of generalized cyclotomic mappings of finite fields
The functional graph of a function $g:X\rightarrow X$ is the directed graph with vertex set $X$ the edges of which are of the form $x\rightarrow g(x)$ for $x\in X$. Functional graphs are heavily studied because they allow one to understand the behavior of $g$ under iteration (i.e., to understand the discrete dynamical system $(X,g)$), which has various applications, especially when $X$ is a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. This paper is an extensive study of the functional graphs of so-called index $d$ generalized cyclotomic mappings of $\mathbb{F}_q$, which are a natural and manageable generalization of monomial functions. We provide both theoretical results on the structure of their functional graphs and Las Vegas algorithms for solving fundamental problems, such as parametrizing the connected components of the functional graph by representative vertices, or describing the structure of a connected component given by a representative vertex. The complexity of these algorithms is analyzed in detail, and we make the point that for fixed index $d$ and most prime powers $q$ (in the sense of asymptotic density), suitable implementations of these algorithms have an expected runtime that is polynomial in $\log{q}$ on quantum computers, whereas their expected runtime is subexponential in $\log{q}$ on a classical computer. We also discuss four special cases in which one can devise Las Vegas algorithms with this kind of complexity behavior over most finite fields that solve the graph isomorphism problem for functional graphs of generalized cyclotomic mappings.

Compositions and parities of complete mappings and of orthomorphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine the permutation groups $P_{\mathrm{comp}}(\mathbb{F}_q),P_{\mathrm{orth}}(\mathbb{F}_q)\leq\operatorname{Sym}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ generated by the complete mappings, respectively the orthomorphisms, of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ -- both are equal to $\operatorname{Sym}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ unless $q\in\{2,3,4,5,8\}$. More generally, denote by $P_{\mathrm{comp}}(G)$, respectively $P_{\mathrm{orth}}(G)$, the subgroup of $\operatorname{Sym}(G)$ generated by the complete mappings, respectively the orthomorphisms, of the group $G$. Using recent results of Eberhard-Manners-Mrazović and Müyesser-Pokrovskiy, we show that for each large enough finite group $G$ that has a complete mapping (i.e., whose Sylow $2$-subgroups are trivial or noncyclic), $P_{\mathrm{comp}}(G)=\operatorname{Sym}(G)$ and $P_{\mathrm{orth}}(G)\geq\operatorname{Alt}(G)$. We also prove that $P_{\mathrm{orth}}(G)=\operatorname{Sym}(G)$ for every large enough finite solvable group $G$ that has a complete mapping. Proving these results requires us to study the parities of complete mappings and of orthomorphisms. Some connections with known results in cryptography and with parity types of Latin squares are also discussed.

Laplacian state transfer in vertex complemented coronas
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the existence of Laplacian perfect state transfer and Laplacian pretty good state transfer in vertex complemented coronas. We prove that there is no Laplacian perfect state transfer in vertex complemented coronas. In contrast, we give a sufficient condition for vertex complemented coronas to have Laplacian pretty good state transfer.

Counting irreducible polynomials with prescribed coefficients over a finite field
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue our study on counting irreducible polynomials over a finite field with prescribed coefficients. We set up a general combinatorial framework using generating functions with coefficients from a group algebra which is generated by equivalent classes of polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Simplified expressions are derived for some special cases. Our results extend some earlier results.
A Graph Joining Greedy Approach to Binary de Bruijn Sequences
Using greedy algorithms to generate de Bruijn sequences is a classical approach that has produced numerous interesting theoretical results. This paper investigates an algorithm which we call the Generalized Prefer-Opposite (GPO). It includes all prior greedy algorithms, with the exception of the Fleury Algorithm applied on the de Bruijn graph, as specific instances. The GPO Algorithm can produce any binary periodic sequences with nonlinear complexity at least two on input a pair of suitable feedback function and initial state. In particular, a sufficient and necessary condition for the GPO Algorithm to generate binary de Bruijn sequences is established. This requires the use of feedback functions with a unique cycle or loop in their respective state graphs. Moreover, we discuss modifications to the GPO Algorithm to handle more families of feedback functions whose state graphs have multiple cycles or loops. These culminate in a graph joining method. Several large classes of feedback functions are subsequently used to illustrate how the GPO Algorithm and its modification into the Graph Joining Prefer-Opposite (GJPO) Algorithm work in practice.
An Efficiently Generated Family of Binary de Bruijn Sequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 344, Issue 6, June 2021, 112368 • View PublicationBIB
We study how to generate binary de Bruijn sequences efficiently from the class of simple linear feedback shift registers with feedback function $f(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}) = x_0 + x_1 + x_{n-1}$ for $n \geq 3$, using the cycle joining method. Based on the properties of this class of LFSRs, we propose two new generic successor rules, each of which produces at least $2^{n-3}$ de Bruijn sequences. These two classes build upon a framework proposed by Gabric, Sawada, Williams and Wong in Discrete Mathematics vol. 341, no. 11, pp. 2977--2987, November 2018. Here we introduce new useful choices for the uniquely determined state in each cycle to devise valid successor rules. These choices significantly increase the number of de Bruijn sequences that can be generated. In each class, the next bit costs $O(n)$ time and $O(n)$ space for a fixed $n$.
New Successor Rules to Efficiently Produce Exponentially Many Binary de Bruijn Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We put forward new general criteria to design successor rules that generate binary de Bruijn sequences. Prior fast algorithms based on successor rules in the literature are then shown to be special instances. We implemented the criteria to join the cycles generated by a number of simple feedback shift registers (FSRs) of order $n$. These include the pure cycling register (PCR) and the pure summing register (PSR). For the PCR, we define a transitive relation on its cycles, based on their weights. We also extend the choices of conjugate states by using shift operations. For the PSR, we define three distinct transitive relations on its cycles, namely a run order, a necklace order, and a mixed order. Using the new orders, we propose numerous classes of successor rules. Each class efficiently generates a number, exponential in $n$, of binary de Bruijn sequences. Producing the next bit in each such sequence takes $O(n)$ memory and $O(n)$ time. We implemented computational routines to confirm the claims.

A framework of constructing placement delivery arrays for centralized coded caching
Published • View PublicationBIB
In caching system, it is desirable to design a coded caching scheme with the transmission load $R$ and subpacketization $F$ as small as possible, in order to improve efficiency of transmission in the peak traffic times and to decrease implementation complexity. Yan et al. reformulated the centralized coded caching scheme as designing a corresponding $F\times K$ array called placement delivery array (PDA), where $F$ is the subpacketization and $K$ is the number of users. Motivated by several constructions of PDAs, we introduce a framework for constructing PDAs, where each row is indexed by a row vector of some matrix called row index matrix and each column's index is labelled by an element of a direct product set. Using this framework, a new scheme is obtained, which can be regarded as a generalization of some previously known schemes. When $K$ is equal to ${m\choose t}q^t$ for positive integers $m$, $t$ with $t<m$ and $q\geq 2$, we show that the row index matrix must be an orthogonal array if all the users have the same memory size. Furthermore, the row index matrix must be a covering array if the coded gain is ${m\choose t}$, which is the maximal coded gain under our framework. Consequently the lower bounds on the transmission load and subpacketization of the schemes are derived under our framework. Finally, using orthogonal arrays as the row index matrix, we obtain two more explicit classes of schemes which have significantly advantages on the subpacketization while the transmission load is equal or close to that of the schemes constructed by Shangguan et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 64, 5755-5766, 2018) for the same number of users and memory size.

On Inverses of Permutation Polynomials of Small Degree over Finite Fields
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 66(2):914--922, Feb 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Permutation polynomials (PPs) and their inverses have applications in cryptography, coding theory and combinatorial design theory. In this paper, we make a brief summary of the inverses of PPs of finite fields, and give the inverses of all PPs of degree $\leq 6$ over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ for all $q$ and the inverses of all PPs of degree $7$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$. The explicit inverse of a class of fifth degree PPs is the main result, which is obtained by using Lucas' theorem, some congruences of binomial coefficients, and a known formula for the inverses of PPs of finite fields.

A Recursive Construction of Permutation Polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ with Odd Characteristic from Rédei Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we construct two classes of permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ with odd characteristic from rational Rédei functions. A complete characterization of their compositional inverses is also given. These permutation polynomials can be generated recursively. As a consequence, we can generate recursively permutation polynomials with arbitrary number of terms. More importantly, the conditions of these polynomials being permutations are very easy to characterize. For wide applications in practice, several classes of permutation binomials and trinomials are given. With the help of a computer, we find that the number of permutation polynomials of these types is very large.

Counting compositions over finite abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find the number of compositions over finite abelian groups under two types of restrictions: (i) each part belongs to a given subset and (ii) small runs of consecutive parts must have given properties. Waring's problem over finite fields can be converted to type~(i) compositions, whereas Carlitz and locally Mullen compositions can be formulated as type~(ii) compositions. We use the multisection formula to translate the problem from integers to group elements, the transfer matrix method to do exact counting, and finally the Perron-Frobenius theorem to derive asymptotics. We also exhibit bijections involving certain restricted classes of compositions.

In this paper, we construct some new classes of complete permutation monomials with exponent $d=\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}$ using AGW criterion (a special case). This proves two recent conjectures in [Wuetal2] and extends some of these recent results to more general $n$'s.

We consider the problem of enumerating the number of irreducible transformation shift registers. We give an asymptotic formula for the number of irreducible transformation shift registers in some special cases. Moreover, we derive a short proof for the exact number of irreducible transformation shift registers of order two using a recent generalization of a theorem of Carlitz.

The $T_{4}$ and $G_{4}$ constructions of Costas arrays
We examine two particular constructions of Costas arrays known as the Taylor variant of the Lempel construction, or the $T_{4}$ construction, and the variant of the Golomb construction, or the $G_{4}$ construction. We connect these constructions with the concept of Fibonacci primitive roots, and show that under the Extended Riemann Hypothesis the $T_{4}$ and $G_{4}$ constructions are valid infinitely often.

Compositional inverses, complete mappings, orthogonal Latin squares and bent functions
We study compositional inverses of permutation polynomials, complete mappings, mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and bent vectorial functions. Recently it was obtained in [33] the compositional inverses of linearized permutation binomials over finite fields. It was also noted in [29] that computing inverses of bijections of subspaces have applications in determining the compositional inverses of certain permutation classes related to linearized polynomials. In this paper we obtain compositional inverses of a class of linearized binomials permuting the kernel of the trace map. As an application of this result, we give the compositional inverse of a class of complete mappings. This complete mapping class improves upon a recent construction given in [34]. We also construct recursively a class of complete mappings involving multi-trace functions. Finally we use these complete mappings to derive a set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and to construct a class of $p$-ary bent vectorial functions from the Maiorana-McFarland class.
