A relative simplicial complex is a collection of sets of the form $Δ\setminus Γ$, where $Γ\subset Δ$ are simplicial complexes. Relative complexes played key roles in recent advances in algebraic, geometric, and topological combinatorics but, in contrast to simplicial complexes, little is known about their general combinatorial structure. In this paper, we address a basic question in this direction and give a characterization of $f$-vectors of relative (multi)complexes on a ground set of fixed size. On the algebraic side, this yields a characterization of Hilbert functions of quotients of homogeneous ideals over polynomial rings with a fixed number of indeterminates.
Moreover, we characterize $h$-vectors of fully Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes as well as $h$-vectors of Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes with minimal faces of given dimensions. The latter resolves a question of Björner.
One-skeleta of $G$-parking function ideals: resolutions and standard monomials
Given a graph $G$, the $G$-parking function ideal $M_G$ is an artinian monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S$ with the property that a linear basis for $S/M_G$ is provided by the set of $G$-parking functions. It follows that the dimension of $S/M_G$ is given by the number of spanning trees of $G$, which by the Matrix Tree Theorem is equal to the determinant of the reduced Laplacian of $G$. The ideals $M_G$ and related algebras were introduced by Postnikov and Shapiro where they studied their Hilbert functions and homological properties. The author and Sanyal showed that a minimal resolution of $M_G$ can be constructed from the graphical hyperplane arrangement associated to $G$, providing a combinatorial interpretation of the Betti numbers.
Motivated by constructions in the theory of chip-firing on graphs, we study certain `skeleton' ideals $M_G^{(k)} \subset M_G$ generated by subsets of vertices of $G$ of size at most $k+1$. Here we focus our attention on the case $k=1$, the $1$-skeleton of the $G$-parking functions ideals. We consider standard monomials of $M_G^{(1)}$ and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the dimension of $S/M_G^{(1)}$ in terms of the signless Laplacian for the case $G = K_{n+1}$ is the complete graph. Our main study concerns homological properties of these ideals. We study resolutions of $M_G^{(1)}$ and show that for a certain class of graphs minimal resolution is supported on decompositions of Euclidean space coming from the theory of tropical hyperplane arrangements. This leads to combinatorial interpretations of the Betti numbers of these ideals.

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of how computational algebraic geometry can be used to deal with the problem of counting and classifying $r\times s$ partial Latin rectangles based on $n$ symbols of a given size, shape, type or structure. The computation of Hilbert functions and triangular systems of radical ideals enables us to solve this problem for all $r,s,n\leq 6$. As a by-product, explicit formulas are determined for the number of partial Latin rectangles of size up to six. We focus then on the study of non-compressible regular partial Latin squares and their equivalent incidence structure called seminet, whose distribution into main classes is explicitly determined for point rank up to eight. We prove in particular the existence of two new configurations of point rank eight.

Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m = min(S \ {0}), conductor c = max(N \ S) + 1 and minimally generated by e elements. Let L be the set of elements of S which are smaller than c. Wilf conjectured in 1978 that |L| is bounded below by c/e. We show here that if c $\le$ 3m, then S satisfies Wilf's conjecture. Combined with a recent result of Zhai, this implies that the conjecture is asymptotically true as the genus g(S) = |N \ S| goes to infinity. One main tool in this paper is a classical theorem of Macaulay on the growth of Hilbert functions of standard graded algebras.

Inspired by the study of random graphs and simplicial complexes, and motivated by the need to understand average behavior of ideals, we propose and study probabilistic models of random monomial ideals. We prove theorems about the probability distributions, expectations and thresholds for events involving monomial ideals with given Hilbert function, Krull dimension, first graded Betti numbers, and present several experimentally-backed conjectures about regularity, projective dimension, strong genericity, and Cohen-Macaulayness of random monomial ideals.

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and $A$ a Cohen-Macaulay graded domain with $A_0=k$. If $A$ is semi-standard graded (i.e., $A$ is finitely generated as a $k[A_1]$-module), it has the $h$-vector $(h_0, h_1, ..., h_s)$, which encodes the Hilbert function of $A$. From now on, assume that $s=2$. It is known that if $A$ is standard graded (i.e., $A=k[A_1]$), then $A$ is level. We will show that, in the semi-standard case, if $A$ is not level, then $h_1+1$ divides $h_2$. Conversely, for any positive integers $h$ and $n$, there is a non-level $A$ with the $h$-vector $(1, h, (h+1)n)$. Moreover, such examples can be constructed as Ehrhart rings (equivalently, normal toric rings).

We investigate quasisymmetric functions coming from combinatorial Hopf monoids. We show that these invariants arise naturally in Ehrhart theory, and that some of their specializations are Hilbert functions for relative simplicial complexes. This class of complexes, called forbidden composition complexes, also forms a Hopf monoid, thus demonstrating a link between Hopf algebras, Ehrhart theory, and commutative algebra. We also study various specializations of quasisymmetric functions.

We study real sequences $\{a_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that eventually agree with a polynomial. We show that if the numerator polynomial of its rational generating series is of degree $s$ and has only nonnegative coefficients, then the numerator polynomial of the subsequence $\{ a_{rn+i}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$, $0\leq i<r$, has only nonpositive, real roots for all $r\geq s-i$. We apply our results to combinatorially positive valuations on polytopes and to Hilbert functions of Veronese submodules of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In particular, we prove that the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of the $r$-th dilate of a $d$-dimensional polytope has only distinct, negative, real roots if $r\geq \min \{s+1,d\}$. This proves a conjecture of Beck and Stapledon (2010).
Simplicial orders and chordality

Chordal clutters in the sense of [14] and [3] are defined via simplicial orders. Their circuit ideal has a linear resolution, independent of the characteristic of the base field. We show that any Betti sequence of an ideal with linear resolution appears as the Betti sequence of the circuit ideal of such a chordal clutter. Associated with any simplicial order is a sequence of integers which we call the $λ$-sequence of the chordal clutter. All possible $λ$-sequences are characterized. They are intimately related to the Hilbert function of a suitable standard graded $K$-algebra attached to the chordal clutter. By the $λ$-sequence of a chordal clutter we determine other numerical invariants of the circuit ideal, such as the $\textbf{h}$-vector and the Betti numbers.

We introduce and study the minimum distance function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field, and show that it generalizes the minimum distance of projective Reed-Muller-type codes over finite fields. This gives an algebraic formulation of the minimum distance of a projective Reed-Muller-type code in terms of the algebraic invariants and structure of the underlying vanishing ideal. Then we give a method, based on Groebner bases and Hilbert functions, to find lower bounds for the minimum distance of certain Reed-Muller-type codes. Finally we show explicit upper bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials in a projective nested cartesian set and give some support to a conjecture of Carvalho, Lopez-Neumann and Lopez.

The set of (ordered) score sheets of a round-robin football tournament played between $n$ teams together with the pointwise addition has the structure of an affine monoid. In this paper we study (using both theoretical and computational methods) the most important invariants of this monoid, namely the Hilbert basis, the multiplicity, the Hilbert series and the Hilbert function.
Shattered Sets and the Hilbert Function
We study complexity measures on subsets of the boolean hypercube and exhibit connections between algebra (the Hilbert function) and combinatorics (VC theory). These connections yield results in both directions. Our main complexity-theoretic result proves that most linear program feasibility problems cannot be computed by polynomial-sized constant-depth circuits. Moreover, our result applies to a stronger regime in which the hyperplanes are fixed and only the directions of the inequalities are given as input to the circuit. We derive this result by proving that a rich class of extremal functions in VC theory cannot be approximated by low-degree polynomials. We also present applications of algebra to combinatorics. We provide a new algebraic proof of the Sandwich Theorem, which is a generalization of the well-known Sauer-Perles-Shelah Lemma. Finally, we prove a structural result about downward-closed sets, related to the Chvátal conjecture in extremal combinatorics.
Blow-up algebras, determinantal ideals, and Dedekind-Mertens-like formulas

We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that the initial ideals correspond to vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, and we determine their Hilbert functions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. As a consequence, we find explicit minimal reductions for all Ferrers and many specialized Ferrers ideals, as well as their reduction numbers. These results can be viewed as extensions of the classical Dedekind-Mertens formula for the content of the product of two polynomials.

We prove a conjecture of Stembridge concerning stability of Kronecker coefficients that vastly generalizes Murnaghan's theorem. The main idea is to identify the sequences of Kronecker coefficients in question with Hilbert functions of modules over finitely generated algebras. The proof only uses Schur-Weyl duality and the Borel-Weil theorem and does not rely on any existing work on Kronecker coefficients.

Let $X$ be a complete $n$-dimensional simplicial toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring $S$. We study the multigraded Hilbert function $H_Y$ of reduced $0$-dimensional subschemes $Y$ in $X$. We provide explicit formulas and prove non-decreasing and stabilization properties of $H_Y$ when $Y$ is a $0$-dimensional complete intersection in $X$. We apply our results to computing the dimension of some evaluation codes on $0$-dimensional complete intersection in simplicial toric varieties.

In many cases we explicitly compute their invariants - Hilbert function, Ehrhart polynomial, gap vector. In particular, we answer several questions posed by Beck, Cox, Delgado, Gubeladze, Haase, Hibi, Higashitani and Maclagan.

Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all colored quotient rings that are Macaulay-Lex, and give a simultaneous generalization of both the Clements-Lindström theorem and the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai theorem. We also show that the $f$-vectors of $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$-colored simplicial complexes or multicomplexes are never characterized by "reverse-lexicographic" complexes or multicomplexes when $n>1$ and $(a_1, \dots, a_n) \neq (1, \dots, 1)$.
Hilbert Functions and the Finite Degree Zariski Closure in Finite Field Combinatorial Geometry

The polynomial method has been used recently to obtain many striking results in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we use affine Hilbert functions to obtain an estimation theorem in finite field geometry. The most natural way to state the theorem is via a sort of bounded degree Zariski closure operation: given a set, we consider all polynomials of some bounded degree vanishing on that set, and then the common zeros of these polynomials. For example, the degree d closure of d + 1 points on a line will contain the whole line, as any polynomial of degree at most d vanishing on the d + 1 points must vanish on the line. Our result is a bound on the size of a finite degree closure of a given set. Finally, we adapt our use of Hilbert functions to the method of multiplicities.
Some relational structures with polynomial growth and their associated algebras I: Quasi-polynomiality of the profile

The profile of a relational structure $R$ is the function $\varphi_R$ which counts for every integer $n$ the number $\varphi_R(n)$, possibly infinite, of substructures of $R$ induced on the $n$-element subsets, isomorphic substructures being identified. If $\varphi_R$ takes only finite values, this is the Hilbert function of a graded algebra associated with $R$, the age algebra introduced by P. J. Cameron.
In this paper we give a closer look at this association, particularly when the relational structure $R$ admits a finite monomorphic decomposition. This setting still encompass well-studied graded commutative algebras like invariant rings of finite permutation groups, or the rings of quasi-symmetric polynomials. We prove that $\varphi_R$ is eventually a quasi-polynomial, this supporting the conjecture that, under mild assumptions on $R$, $\varphi_R$ is eventually a quasi-polynomial when it is bounded by some polynomial.

In the hierarchy of structural sophistication for lattice polytopes, normal polytopes mark a point of origin; very ample and Koszul polytopes occupy bottom and top spots in this hierarchy, respectively. In this paper we explore a simple construction for lattice polytopes with a twofold aim. On the one hand, we derive an explicit series of very ample 3-dimensional polytopes with arbitrarily large deviation from the normality property, measured via the highest discrepancy degree between the corresponding Hilbert functions and Hilbert polynomials. On the other hand, we describe a large class of Koszul polytopes of arbitrary dimensions, containing many smooth polytopes and extending the previously known class of Nakajima polytopes.
