Hilbert functions of d-regular ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomial ideal $L$ having the maximal graded Betti numbers among graded ideals $J$ which have the same Hilbert function as $I$ and which satisfy $\mathrm{proj dim}(J) \leq p$ and $\mathrm{reg}(J) \leq d$. We also prove the same fact for squarefree monomial ideals. The main methods for proofs are generic initial ideals and combinatorics on strongly stable ideals.

Normalization of monomial ideals and Hilbert functions
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 136 (2008), 1933-1943 • View PublicationBIB
We study the normalization of a monomial ideal, and show how to compute its Hilbert function (using Ehrhart polynomials) if the ideal is zero dimensional. A positive lower bound for the second coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial is shown.

Some relational structures with polynomial growth and their associated algebras
The profile of a relational structure R is the function phi_R which counts for every integer n the number, possibly infinite, phi_R(n) of substructures of R induced on the n-element subsets, isomorphic substructures being identified. Several graded algebras can be associated with R in such a way that the profile of R is simply the Hilbert function. An example of such graded algebra is the age algebra introduced by P.~J.~Cameron. In this paper, we give a closer look at this association, particularly when the relational structure R decomposes into finitely many monomorphic components. In this case, several well-studied graded commutative algebras (e.g. the invariant ring of a finite permutation group, the ring of quasi-symmetric polynomials) are isomorphic to some age algebras. Also, phi_R is a quasi-polynomial, this supporting the conjecture that, with mild assumptions on R, phi_R is a quasi-polynomial when it is bounded by some polynomial.

Empty simplices of polytopes and graded Betti numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjecture of Kalai, Kleinschmidt, and Lee on the number of empty simplices of a simplicial polytope is established by relating it to the first graded Betti numbers of the polytope. The proof allows us to derive explicit optimal bounds on the number of empty simplices of any given dimension. As a key result, we prove optimal bounds for the graded Betti numbers of any standard graded K-algebra in terms of its Hilbert function.

On the Coefficients of Hilbert Quasipolynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hilbert function of a module over a positively graded algebra is of quasi-polynomial type (Hilbert--Serre). We derive an upper bound for its grade, i.e. the index from which on its coefficients are constant. As an application, we give a purely algebraic proof of an old combinatorial result (due to Ehrhart, McMullen and Stanley).

Reverse Lexicographic and Lexicographic Shifting
Published • View PublicationBIB
A short new proof of the fact that all shifted complexes are fixed by reverse lexicographic shifting is given. A notion of lexicographic shifting, $Δ_{\lex}$ -- an operation that transforms a monomial ideal of $S=\field[x_i: i\in\N]$ that is finitely generated in each degree into a squarefree strongly stable ideal -- is defined and studied. It is proved that (in contrast to the reverse lexicographic case) a squarefree strongly stable ideal $I\subset S$ is fixed by lexicographic shifting if and only if $I$ is a universal squarefree lexsegment ideal (abbreviated USLI) of $S$. Moreover, in the case when $I$ is finitely generated and is not a USLI, it is verified that all the ideals in the sequence $\{Δ_{\lex}^i(I)\}_{i=0}^{\infty}$ are distinct. The limit ideal $\barΔ(I)=\lim_{i\to\infty}Δ_{\lex}^i(I)$ is well defined and is a USLI that depends only on a certain analog of the Hilbert function of $I$.

Finiteness theorems in stochastic integer programming
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Graver test sets for families of linear multi-stage stochastic integer programs with varying number of scenarios. We show that these test sets can be decomposed into finitely many ``building blocks'', independent of the number of scenarios, and we give an effective procedure to compute these building blocks. The paper includes an introduction to Nash-Williams' theory of better-quasi-orderings, which is used to show termination of our algorithm. We also apply this theory to finiteness results for Hilbert functions.

The toric Hilbert scheme of a rank two lattice is smooth and irreducible
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric Hilbert scheme of a lattice L in Z^n is the multigraded Hilbert scheme parameterizing all ideals in k[x_1,...,x_n] with Hilbert function value one for every degree in the grading monoid N^n/L. In this paper we show that if L is two-dimensional, then the toric Hilbert scheme of L is smooth and irreducible. This result is false for lattices of dimension three and higher as the toric Hilbert scheme of a rank three lattice can be reducible.

The border of the Hilbert function of a set of points in P^{n_1} x ... x P^{n_k}
We describe the eventual behaviour of the Hilbert function of a set of distinct points in P^{n_1} x ... x P^{n_k}. As a consequence of this result, we show that the Hilbert function of a set of points in P^{n_1} x ... x P^{n_k} can be determined by computing the Hilbert function at only a finite number of values. Our result extends the result that the Hilbert function of a set of points in P^n stabilizes at the cardinality of the set of points. Motivated by our result, we introduce the notion of the_border_ of the Hilbert function of a set of points. By using the Gale-Ryser Theorem, a classical result about (0,1)-matrices, we characterize all the possible borders for the Hilbert function of a set of distinct points in P^1 x P^1.

We give three determinantal expressions for the Hilbert series as well as the Hilbert function of a Pfaffian ring, and a closed form product formula for its multiplicity. An appendix outlining some basic facts about degeneracy loci and applications to multiplicity formulae for Pfaffian rings is also included.

Combinatorics of the toric Hilbert scheme
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric Hilbert scheme is a parameter space for all ideals with the same multi-graded Hilbert function as a given toric ideal. Unlike the classical Hilbert scheme, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are connected. We construct a graph on all the monomial ideals on the scheme, called the flip graph, and prove that the toric Hilbert scheme is connected if and only if the flip graph is connected. These graphs are used to exhibit curves in P^4 whose associated toric Hilbert schemes have arbitrary dimension. We show that the flip graph maps into the Baues graph of all triangulations of the point configuration defining the toric ideal. Inspired by the recent discovery of a disconnected Baues graph, we close with results that suggest the existence of a disconnected flip graph and hence a disconnected toric Hilbert scheme.

Algebras related to matroids represented in characteristic zero
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let k be a field of characteristic zero. We consider graded subalgebras A of k[x_1,...,x_m]/(x_1^2,...,x_m^2) generated by d linearly independant linear forms. Representations of matroids over k provide a natural description of the structure of these algebras. In return, the numerical properties of the Hilbert function of A yield some information about the Tutte polynomial of the corresponding matroid. Isomorphism classes of these algebras correspond to equivalence classes of hyperplane arrangements under the action of the general linear group.
