Given relatively prime positive integers a_1,...,a_n, the Frobenius number is the largest integer that cannot be written as a nonnegative integer combination of the a_i. We examine the parametric version of this problem: given a_i=a_i(t) as functions of t, compute the Frobenius number as a function of t. A function f is a quasi-polynomial if there exists a period m and polynomials f_0,...,f_{m-1} such that f(t)=f_{t mod m}(t) for all positive integers t. We conjecture that, if the a_i(t) are polynomials (or quasi-polynomials) in t, then the Frobenius number agrees with a quasi-polynomial, for sufficiently large t. We prove this in the case where the a_i(t) are linear functions, and also prove it in the case where n (the number of generators) is at most 3.
Connect Four and Graph Decomposition

We introduce the standard decomposition, a way of decomposing a labeled graph into a sum of certain labeled subgraphs. We motivate this graph-theoretic concept by relating it to Connect Four decompositions of standard sets. We prove that all standard decompositions can be generated in polynomial time, which implies that all Connect Four decompositions can be generated in polynomial time.
Complexity and Algorithms for Euler Characteristic of Simplicial Complexes

We consider the problem of computing the Euler characteristic of an abstract simplicial complex given by its vertices and facets. We show that this problem is #P-complete and present two new practical algorithms for computing Euler characteristic. The two new algorithms are derived using combinatorial commutative algebra and we also give a second description of them that requires no algebra. We present experiments showing that the two new algorithms can be implemented to be faster than previous Euler characteristic implementations by a large margin.

Irreducible decomposition of monomial ideals has an increasing number of applications from biology to pure math. This paper presents the Slice Algorithm for computing irreducible decompositions, Alexander duals and socles of monomial ideals. The paper includes experiments showing good performance in practice.

The paper that was here is a preprint that was never turned into a proper paper. In particular it does not have enough citations to the literature. The paper "The Slice Algorithm For Irreducible Decomposition of Monomial Ideals" contains a much better description of the Label algorithm than this preprint did. If you still wish to read the original preprint then access the arXiv's version 1 of this paper, instead of version 2 which is what you are reading now.

A Grobner basis-based algorithm for solving the Frobenius Instance Problem is presented, and this leads to an algorithm for solving the Frobenius Problem that can handle numbers with thousands of digits. Connections to irreducible decompositions and Hilbert functions are also presented.
