On the Weak Lefschetz Property for Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three
Published in Journal of Algebra 403 (2014), no. 1, 48--68 • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.

The ring of evenly weighted points on the line
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M_w = (\Pj^1)^n \q \mathrm{SL}_2$ denote the geometric invariant theory quotient of $(\Pj^1)^n$ by the diagonal action of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ using the line bundle $\mathcal{O}(w_1,w_2,...,w_n)$ on $(\Pj^1)^n$. Let $R_w$ be the coordinate ring of $M_w$. We give a closed formula for the Hilbert function of $R_w$, which allows us to compute the degree of $M_w$. The graded parts of $R_w$ are certain Kostka numbers, so this Hilbert function computes stretched Kostka numbers. If all the weights $w_i$ are even, we find a presentation of $R_w$ so that the ideal $I$ of this presentation has a quadratic Gröbner basis. In particular, $R_w$ is Koszul. We obtain this result by studying the homogeneous coordinate ring of a projective toric variety arising as a degeneration of $M_w$.

Two unfortunate properties of pure f-vectors
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 143 (2015), 955--964 • View PublicationBIB
The set of f-vectors of pure simplicial complexes is an important but little understood object in combinatorics and combinatorial commutative algebra. Unfortunately, its explicit characterization appears to be a virtually intractable problem, and its structure very irregular and complicated. The purpose of this note, where we combine a few different algebraic and combinatorial techniques, is to lend some further evidence to this fact. We first show that pure (in fact, Cohen-Macaulay) f-vectors can be nonunimodal with arbitrarily many peaks, thus improving the corresponding results known for level Hilbert functions and pure O-sequences. We provide both an algebraic and a combinatorial argument for this result. Then, answering negatively a question of the second author and collaborators posed in the recent AMS Memoir on pure O-sequences, we show that the Interval Property fails for the set of pure f-vectors, even in dimension 2.

Algorithms for strongly stable ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Strongly stable monomial ideals are important in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. Prompted, for example, by combinatorial approaches for studying Hilbert schemes and the existence of maximal total Betti numbers among saturated ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, in this note we present three algorithms to produce all strongly stable ideals with certain prescribed properties: the saturated strongly stable ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, the almost lexsegment ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, and the saturated strongly stable ideals with a given Hilbert function. We also establish results for estimating the complexity of our algorithms.

Gluing and Hilbert functions of monomial curves
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (2009), 2225-2232 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.

Extensions of Toric Varieties
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 18 (2011), No. 1, Research Paper P93 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.

Face numbers of pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the face numbers of simplicial complexes with Buchsbaum vertex links, especially pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities. This includes deriving Dehn-Sommerville relations for pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities and establishing lower bound theorems when the singularities are also homologically isolated. We give formulas for the Hilbert function of a generic Artinian reduction of the face ring when the singularities are homologically isolated and for any pure two-dimensional complex. Some examples of spaces where the $f$-vector can be completely characterized are described. Let $Δ$ and $Δ'$ be two simplicial complexes that are homeomorphic and have the same $f$-vector. In \cite{MNS} the question is raised of whether or not the Hilbert functions of generic Artinian reductions of their face rings are identical. We prove that this is the case if the spaces have isolated singularities and are PL-homeomorphic.
Hilbert depth of powers of the maximal ideal
Published in in: "Commutative Algebra and its Connections to Geometry (PASI 2009)," A. Corso, C. Polini (eds.), Contemporary Mathematics, vol. 555, Amer. Math. Soc., R.I., 2011, pp. 1-12 • View PublicationBIB
The Hilbert depth of a module M is the maximum depth that occurs among all modules with the same Hilbert function as M. In this note we compute the Hilbert depths of the powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal in a standard graded polynomial ring.

Viewing counting polynomials as Hilbert functions via Ehrhart theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Steingrimsson (2001) showed that the chromatic polynomial of a graph is the Hilbert function of a relative Stanley-Reisner ideal. We approach this result from the point of view of Ehrhart theory and give a sufficient criterion for when the Ehrhart polynomial of a given relative polytopal complex is a Hilbert function in Steingrimsson's sense. We use this result to establish that the modular and integral flow and tension polynomials of a graph are Hilbert functions.

The weak Lefschetz property, monomial ideals, and lozenges
Published in Illinois J. Math. 55 (2011), no. 1, 377--395 • View PublicationBIB
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function of each level Artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables is peaked strictly unimodal.
Stanley decompositions and Hilbert depth in the Koszul complex
Published in J. Commut. Algebra 2 (2010), 327-357 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley decompositions of multigraded modules $M$ over polynomials rings have been discussed intensively in recent years. There is a natural notion of depth that goes with a Stanley decomposition, called the Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that the Stanley depth of a module $M$ is always at least the (classical) depth of $M$. In this paper we introduce a weaker type of decomposition, which we call Hilbert decomposition, since it only depends on the Hilbert function of $M$, and an analogous notion of depth, called Hilbert depth. Since Stanley decompositions are Hilbert decompositions, the latter set upper bounds to the existence of Stanley decompositions. The advantage of Hilbert decompositions is that they are easier to find. We test our new notion on the syzygy modules of the residue class field of $K[X_1,...,X_n]$ (as usual identified with $K$). Writing $M(n,k)$ for the $k$-th syzygy module, we show that theHilbert depth of M(n,1) is $\lfloor(n+1)/2\rfloor$. Furthermore, we show that, for $n > k \ge \lfloor n/2\rfloor$, the Hilbert depth of $M(n,k)$ is equal to $n-1$. We conjecture that the same holds for the Stanley depth. For the range $n/2 > k > 1$, it seems impossible to come up with a compact formula for the Hilbert depth. Instead, we provide very precise asymptotic results as $n$ becomes large.

Gotzmann Edge Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let P = k[x_1, ..., x_n] be the polynomial ring in n variables. A homogeneous ideal I of P generated in degree d is called Gotzmann if it has the smallest possible Hilbert function out of all homogeneous ideals with the same dimension in degree d. The edge ideal of a simple graph G on vertices x_1, ..., x_n is the quadratic square-free monomial ideal generated by all x_i x_j where {x_i,x_j} is an edge of G. The only edge ideals that are Gotzmann are those edge ideals corresponding to star graphs.

Newton-Okounkov bodies, semigroups of integral points, graded algebras and intersection theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.

Sagbi Bases of Cox-Nagata Rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We degenerate Cox-Nagata rings to toric algebras by means of sagbi bases induced by configurations over the rational function field. For del Pezzo surfaces, this degeneration implies the Batyrev-Popov conjecture that these rings are presented by ideals of quadrics. For the blow-up of projective n-space at n+3 points, sagbi bases of Cox-Nagata rings establish a link between the Verlinde formula and phylogenetic algebraic geometry, and we use this to answer questions due to D'Cruz-Iarobbino and Buczynska-Wisniewski. Inspired by the zonotopal algebras of Holtz and Ron, our study emphasizes explicit computations, and offers a new approach to Hilbert functions of fat points.

Some relational structures with polynomial growth and their associated algebras II: Finite generation
Published • View PublicationBIB
The profile of a relational structure $R$ is the function $\varphi_R$ which counts for every integer $n$ the number, possibly infinite, $\varphi_R(n)$ of substructures of $R$ induced on the $n$-element subsets, isomorphic substructures being identified. If $\varphi_R$ takes only finite values, this is the Hilbert function of a graded algebra associated with $R$, the age algebra $A(R)$, introduced by P.~J.~Cameron. In a previous paper, we studied the relationship between the properties of a relational structure and those of their algebra, particularly when the relational structure $R$ admits a finite monomorphic decomposition. This setting still encompasses well-studied graded commutative algebras like invariant rings of finite permutation groups, or the rings of quasi-symmetric polynomials. In this paper, we investigate how far the well know algebraic properties of those rings extend to age algebras. The main result is a combinatorial characterization of when the age algebra is finitely generated. In the special case of tournaments, we show that the age algebra is finitely generated if and only if the profile is bounded. We explore the Cohen-Macaulay property in the special case of invariants of permutation groupoids. Finally, we exhibit sufficient conditions on the relational structure that make naturally the age algebra into a Hopf algebra.
Regular sequences of symmetric polynomials
Published in Rend. Sem. Mat. Univ. Padova 121 (2009), 179-199 • View PublicationBIB
Denote by p_k the k-th power sum symmetric polynomial n variables. The interpretation of the q-analogue of the binomial coefficient as Hilbert function leads us to discover that n consecutive power sums in n variables form a regular sequence. We consider then the following problem: describe the subsets n powersums forming a regular sequence. A necessary condition is that n! divides the product of the degrees of the elements. To find an easily verifiable sufficient condition turns out to be surprisingly difficult already in 3 variables. Given positive integers a<b<c with GCD(a,b,c)=1, we conjecture that p_a, p_b, p_c is a regular sequence for n=3 if and only if 6 divides abc. We provide evidence for the conjecture by proving it in several special instances.

Hilbert functions of points on Schubert varieties in Orthogonal Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a certain kind. Taking the Schubert variety to be of a special kind and the point to be the "identity coset," our problem specializes to a problem about Pfaffian ideals treatments of which by different methods exist in the literature. Also available in the literature is a geometric solution when the point is a "generic singularity."

The Profile of relations
The {\it profile} of a relational structure $R$ is the function $φ_R$ which counts for every integer $n$ the number of its $n$-element substructures up to an isomorphism. Many counting functions are profiles. Interesting examples come from permutation groups. Some salient facts about the behavior of the profile are presented. Techniques from ordered sets and combinatorics (notably the notion of well-quasi-order, the related notions of ordered algebras, Ramsey theorem) are illustrated. Ongoing resarch suggests to view the profile of a relational structure $R$ as the Hilbert function of some graded algebra associated with $R$. A hint at the solution of a conjecture of P.J.Cameron on the integrity of the ring of the orbit algebra is given. Recent progress made with Y.Boudabbous and N.Thiéry on the conjecture that the profile is a quasi-polynomial if its growth is polynomial (and the structure has a finite kernel) are presented.
