Categorical valuative invariants of polyhedra and matroids
We introduce the notion of a categorical valuative invariant of polyhedra or matroids, in which alternating sums of numerical invariants are replaced by split exact sequences in an additive category. We provide categorical lifts of a number of valuative invariants of matroids, including the Poincare polynomial, the Chow and augmented Chow polynomials, and certain two-variable extensions of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and Z-polynomial. These lifts allow us to perform calculations equivariantly with respect to automorphism groups of matroids.
A state sum for the total face color polynomial
The total face color polynomial is based upon the Poincaré polynomials of a family of filtered $n$-color homologies. It counts the number of $n$-face colorings of ribbon graphs for each positive integer $n$. As such, it may be seen as a successor of the Penrose polynomial, which at $n=3$ counts $3$-edge colorings (and consequently $4$-face colorings) of planar trivalent graphs. In this paper we describe a state sum formula for the polynomial. This formula unites two different perspectives about graph coloring: one based upon topological quantum field theory and the other on diagrammatic tensors.

Addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials and $B$-sequences of hyperplane arrangements
We prove the addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials, which have two important specializations. Namely, one is to the characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arangements, and the other to the Poincarè polynomials of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. One of the main tools to show them is the free surjection theorem which confirms the right exactness of several important exact sequences among logarithmic modules. Moreover, we introduce a generalized polynomial $B$-theory to the higher order logarithmic modules, whose origin was due to Terao.
The Poincaré-extended ab-index
Motivated by a conjecture concerning Igusa local zeta functions for intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we introduce and study the Poincaré-extended ab-index, which generalizes both the ab-index and the Poincaré polynomial. For posets admitting R-labelings, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients of the extended ab-index, proving their nonnegativity. In the case of intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we prove the above conjecture of the second author and Voll as well as another conjecture of the second author and Kühne. We also define the pullback ab-index generalizing the cd-index of face posets for oriented matroids. Our results recover, generalize and unify results from Billera-Ehrenborg-Readdy, Bergeron-Mykytiuk-Sottile-van Willigenburg, Saliola-Thomas, and Ehrenborg. This connection allows us to translate our results into the language of quasisymmetric functions, and-in the special case of symmetric functions-make a conjecture about Schur positivity. A proof of this conjecture now appears an appendix by Ricky Ini Liu.

Generic curves and non-coprime Catalans
Published in Algebraic Geometry, 2024 • Search Publication
We compute the Poincaré polynomials of the compactified Jacobians for plane curve singularities with Puiseaux exponents $(nd,md,md+1)$, and relate them to the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers in the non-coprime case. We also confirm a conjecture of Cherednik and Danilenko for such curves.

Grassmannians in the Lattice points of Dilations of the Standard Simplex
A remarkable connection between the cohomology ring ${\rm H^{\ast}(Gr}(d, d+r),\Z)$ of the Grasssmannian ${\rm Gr}(d,d+r)$ and the lattice points of the dilation $rΔ_{d}$ of the standard d-simplex is investigated. The natural grading on the cohomology induces different gradings of the lattice points of $rΔ_{d}$. This leads to different refinements of the Ehrhart polynomial $L_{Δ_{d}}(r)$ of the standard $d$-simplex. We study two of these refinements which are defined by the weights $(1,1,\dots,1)$ and $(1,2,\dots, d)$. One of the refinements interprets the Poincaré polynomial ${\rm P(Gr}(d,d+r),z)$ as the counting of the lattice points which lie on the slicing hyperplanes of the dilation $rΔ_d$. Therefore, on the combinatorial level the Poincaré polynomial of the Grassmannian Gr$(d,d+r)$ is a refinement of the Ehrhart polynomial $L_{Δ_d}(r)$ of the standard $d$-simplex $Δ_{d}$.

The parabolic coset structure of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups
In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.

Shi arrangements restricted to Weyl cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the restrictions of Shi arrangements to Weyl cones, their relations to antichains in the root poset, and their intersection posets. For any Weyl cone, we provide bijections between regions, flats intersecting the cone, and antichains of a naturally-defined subposet of the root poset. This gives a refinement of the parking function numbers via the Poincaré polynomials of the intersection posets of all Weyl cones. Finally, we interpret these Poincaré polynomials as the Hilbert series of three isomorphic graded rings. One of these rings arises from the Varchenko-Gel'fand ring, another is the coordinate ring of the vertices of the order polytope of a subposet of the root poset, and the third is purely combinatorial.

Supersolvable posets and fiber-type abelian arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a combinatorial analysis of fiber bundles of generalized configuration spaces on connected abelian Lie groups. These bundles are akin to those of Fadell-Neuwirth for configuration spaces, and their existence is detected by a combinatorial property of an associated finite partially ordered set. This is consistent with Terao's fibration theorem connecting bundles of hyperplane arrangements to Stanley's lattice supersolvability. We obtain a combinatorially determined class of K($π$,1) toric and elliptic arrangements. Under a stronger combinatorial condition, we prove a factorization of the Poincaré polynomial when the Lie group is noncompact. In the case of toric arrangements, this provides an analogue of Falk-Randell's formula relating the Poincaré polynomial to the lower central series of the fundamental group.

Macdonald polynomials and operators and Catalan Combinatorics
Our main aim with these notes is to introduce the combinatorial and symmetric function tools that relate to the description of the Poincare polynomial of the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of torus links, a.k.a. the (reduced) superpolynomial of these links.

Poincaré Polynomials of Odd Diagram Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
An odd diagram class is a set of permutations with the same odd diagram. Brenti, Carnevale and Tenner showed that each odd diagram class is an interval in the Bruhat order. They conjectured that such intervals are rank-symmetric. In this paper, we present an algorithm to partition an odd diagram class in a uniform manner. As an application, we obtain that the Poincaré polynomial of an odd diagram class factors into polynomials of the form $1+t+\cdots+t^m$. This in particular resolves the conjecture of Brenti, Carnevale and Tenner.

A Generalization of Deodhar's Framework for Questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig Theory
We make progress on a question of Skandera by showing that a product of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements indexed by maximal elements of parabolic subgroups admits a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element as a quotient arising from operations in the Schur algebroid if and only if the sequence of parabolic subgroups satisfy both a rigidity condition and a combinatorial criterion. For Weyl groups, the rigidity condition specializes to a necessary condition for smallness of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. For Schubert varieties indexed by 4231-avoiding permutations, we derive a stronger necessary condition that, up to an appropriate equivalence, is satisfied by at most one Gelfand-MacPherson resolution, and exactly one if and only if 45312 is also avoided. Moreover, we apply the combinatorial criterion to prove the (essentially unique) resolution is small when 34512 and 45123 are likewise avoided. We develop the combinatorial criterion as part of a generalization of Deodhar's combinatorial setting for questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, which in the case of Weyl groups we show captures the Byałynicki-Birula decompositions of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. In particular, we obtain new combinatorial interpretations of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, new algorithms for computing them, and in the case of Weyl groups, an equivalence of the existence of small Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions with that of certain factorizations and generating-function interpretations of the Poincaré polynomial of intersection cohomology of the Schubert variety.

Conic decomposition of a toric variety and its application to cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a \emph{conic sequence} of a convex polytope. It is a way of building up a polytope starting from a vertex and attaching faces one by one with certain regulations. We apply this to a toric variety to obtain an iterated cofibration structure on it. This allows us to prove several vanishing results in the rational cohomology of a toric variety and to calculate Poincaré polynomials for a large class of singular toric varieties.

Matrix coefficients of intertwining operators and the Bruhat order
Let $(π_{\mathbf{z}},V_{\mathbf{z}})$ be an unramified principal series representation of a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field, parametrized by an element $\mathbf{z}$ of the maximal torus in the Langlands dual group. If $v$ is an element of the Weyl group $W$, then the standard intertwining integral $\mathcal{A}_v$ maps $V_{\mathbf{z}}$ to $V_{v\mathbf{z}}$. Letting $ψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ with $w\in W$ be a suitable basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in $V_{\mathbf{z}}$, and $\widehatψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ a basis of the contragredient representation, we define $σ(u,v,w)$ (for $u,v,w\in W$) to be $\langle \mathcal{A}_vψ_u^{\mathbf{z}},\widehatψ^{v\mathbf{z}}_w\rangle$. This is an interesting function and we initiate its study. We show that given $u$ and $w$, there is a minimal $v$ such that $σ(u,v,w)\neq 0$. Denoting this $v$ as $v_\hbox{min}=v_\hbox{min}(u,w)$, we will prove that $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ is a polynomial of the cardinality $q$ of the residue field. Indeed if $v>v_\hbox{min}$, then $σ(u,v,w)$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{z}$ and $q$, whose denominator we describe. But if $v=v_\hbox{min}$, the dependence on $\mathbf{z}$ disappears. We will express $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ as the Poincaré polynomial of a Bruhat interval. The proof leads to fairly intricate considerations of the Bruhat order. Thus our results require us to prove some facts that may be of independent interest, relating the Bruhat order $\leqslant$ and the weak Bruhat order $\leqslant_R$. For example we will prove (for finite Coxeter groups) the following "mixed meet" property. If $u, w$ are elements of $W$, then there exists a unique element $m \in W$ that is maximal with respect to the condition that $m \leqslant_R u$ and $m \leqslant w$. Thus if $z \leqslant_R u$ and $z \leqslant w$, then $x \leqslant m$. The value $v_\hbox{min}$ is $m^{-1}u$.

Generalized Dellac configurations
We study combinatorics of two generalizations of Dellac configurations. First, we establish a correspondence between a generalized Dellac configuration with three parameters and a generalized Dumont permutations. Secondly, by relaxing conditions on Dellac configurations, we introduce a generalization which we call Dellac configurations with boundaries. We show several recurrence relations for the Poincaré polynomials of Dellac configurations with boundaries.

The Varchenko-Gel'fand Ring of a Cone
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a hyperplane arrangement in a real vector space, the coefficients of its Poincaré polynomial have many interpretations. An interesting one is provided by the Varchenko-Gel'fand ring, which is the ring of functions from the chambers of the arrangement to the integers with pointwise addition and multiplication. Varchenko and Gel'fand gave a simple presentation for this ring, along with a filtration and associated graded ring whose Hilbert series is the Poincaré polynomial. We generalize these results to cones defined by intersections of halfspaces of some of the hyperplanes and prove a novel result for the Varchenko-Gel'fand ring of an arrangement: when the arrangement is supersolvable the associated graded ring of the arrangement is Koszul.

Valuations and the Hopf Monoid of Generalized Permutahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of this paper is to show that valuation theory and Hopf theory are compatible on the class of generalized permutahedra. We prove that the Hopf structure $\mathbf{GP}^+$ on these polyhedra descends, modulo the inclusion-exclusion relations, to an indicator Hopf monoid $\mathbb{I}(\mathbf{GP}^+)$ of generalized permutahedra that is isomorphic to the Hopf monoid of weighted ordered set partitions. This quotient Hopf monoid $\mathbb{I}(\mathbf{GP}^+)$ is cofree. It is the terminal object in the category of Hopf monoids with polynomial characters; this partially explains the ubiquity of generalized permutahedra in the theory of Hopf monoids. This Hopf theoretic framework offers a simple, unified explanation for many new and old valuations on generalized permutahedra and their subfamilies. Examples include, for matroids: the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles, Eur's volume polynomial, the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial, the motivic zeta function, and the Derksen-Fink invariant; for posets: the order polynomial, Poincaré polynomial, and poset Tutte polynomial; for generalized permutahedra: the universal Tutte character and the corresponding class in the Chow ring of the permutahedral variety. We obtain several algebraic and combinatorial corollaries; for example: the existence of the valuative character group of $\mathbf{GP}^+$, and the indecomposability of a nestohedron into smaller nestohedra.

We compute the total cohomology of the complement of the toric arrangement associated to the root system $A_n$ as a representation of the corresponding Weyl group via fixed point theory of a "twisted" action of the group. We also provide several proofs of an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomial of the complement of the toric arrangement associated with $A_n$.
