We compute the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to root systems as representations of the corresponding Weyl groups. Specifically, we develop an algorithm for computing the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to general root systems and we carry out this computation for the exceptional root systems $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$ and $E_7$. We also compute the total cohomology of the complement of the toric arrangement associated to $A_n$ as a representation of the Weyl group and give a formula for its Poincaré polynomial.
The Kuenneth formula for graphs
We construct a Cartesian product G x H for finite simple graphs. It satisfies the Kuenneth formula: H^k(G x H) is a direct sum of tensor products H^i(G) x H^j(G) with i+j=k and so p(G x H,x) = p(G,x) p(H,y) for the Poincare polynomial p(G,x) and X(G x H) = X(G) X(H) for the Euler characteristic X(G)=p(G,-1). G1=G x K1 has as vertices the simplices of G and a natural digraph structure. We show that dim(G1) is larger or equal than dim(G) and G1 is homotopic to G. The Kuenneth identity is proven using Hodge describing the harmonic forms by the product f g of harmonic forms of G and H and uses a discrete de Rham theorem given by a combinatorial chain homotopy between simplicial and de Rham cohomology. We show dim(G x H) = dim(G1) + dim(H1) implying that dim(G x H) is larger or equal than dim(G) + dim(H) as for Hausdorff dimension in the continuum. The chromatic number c(G1) is smaller or equal than c(G) and c(G x H) is bounded above by c(G)+c(H)-1. The automorphism group of G x H contains Aut(G) x Aut(H). If G~H and U~V then (G x U) ~ (H x V) if ~ means homotopic: homotopy classes can be multiplided. If G is k-dimensional geometric meaning that all unit spheres S(x) in G are (k-1)-discrete homotopy spheres, then G1 is k-dimensional geometric. If G is k-dimensional geometric and H is l-dimensional geometric, then G x H is geometric of dimension (l+k). The product extends to a ring of chains which unlike the category of graphs is closed under boundary operation taking quotients G/A with A subset Aut(G). As we can glue graphs or chains, joins or fibre bundles can be defined with the same features as in the continuum, allowing to build isomorphism classes of bundles.

We associate to every matroid M a polynomial with integer coefficients, which we call the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of M, in analogy with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in representation theory. We conjecture that the coefficients are always non-negative, and we prove this conjecture for representable matroids by interpreting our polynomials as intersection cohomology Poincare polynomials. We also introduce a q-deformation of the Mobius algebra of M, and use our polynomials to define a special basis for this deformation, analogous to the canonical basis of the Hecke algebra. We conjecture that the structure coefficients for multiplication in this special basis are non-negative, and we verify this conjecture in numerous examples.
Proof of Stasinski and Voll's Hyperoctahedral Group Conjecture
In a recent paper, Stasinski and Voll introduced a length-like statistic on hyperoctahedral groups and conjectured a product formula for this statistic's signed distribution over arbitrary quotients. Stasinski and Voll proved this conjecture for a few special types of quotients. We prove this conjecture in full, showing it holds for all quotients. In the case of signed permutations with at most one descent, this formula gives the Poincare polynomials for the varieties of symmetric matrices of a fixed rank.

There are numerous combinatorial objects associated to a Grassmannian permutation $w_λ$ that index cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. We study several of these objects and their $q$-analogues in the case of permutations $w$ that are not necessarily Grassmannian. We give two main results: first, we show that certain acyclic orientations, rook placements avoiding a diagram of $w$, and fillings of a diagram of $w$ are equinumerous for all permutations $w$. Second, we give a $q$-analogue of a result of Hultman-Linusson-Shareshian-Sjöstrand by showing that under a certain pattern condition the Poincaré polynomial for the Bruhat interval of $w$ essentially counts invertible matrices avoiding a diagram of $w$ over a finite field. In addition to our main results, we include at the end a number of open questions.

We introduce a new approach to the enumeration of rational slope parking functions with respect to the area and a generalized dinv statistics, and relate the combinatorics of parking functions to that of affine permutations. We relate our construction to two previously known combinatorial constructions: Haglund's bijection exchanging the pairs of statistics (area, dinv) and (bounce, area) on Dyck paths, and Pak-Stanley labeling of the regions of k-Shi hyperplane arrangements by k-parking functions. Essentially, our approach can be viewed as a generalization and a unification of these two constructions. We also relate our combinatorial constructions to representation theory. We derive new formulas for the Poincare polynomials of certain affine Springer fibers and describe a connection to the theory of finite dimensional representations of DAHA and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials.

In two recent papers (\textit{Mathematical Research Letters,18(6):1163--1178,2011} and \textit{European J. Combin.,33(8):1913--1918,2012}), Feigin proved that the Poincaré polynomials of the degenerate flag varieties have a combinatorial interpretation through the Dellac configurations, and related them to the $q$-extended normalized median Genocchi numbers $\bar{c}_n(q)$ introduced by Han and Zeng, mainly by geometric considerations. In this paper, we give combinatorial proofs of these results by constructing statistic-preserving bijections between the Dellac configurations and two other combinatorial models of $\bar{c}_n(q)$.
On the cohomology of real Grassmann manifolds
We give an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) in terms of the Young diagrams filled with the letter q in checkered pattern. It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they compute the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincaré-Verdier duality. We also give an explicit formula of the Poincaré polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincaré polynomial is also related to the number of points on Gr(k,n) over a finite field {F}_q with q being a power of prime which is also used in the Young diagrams.
A new statistic on the hyperoctahedral groups

We introduce a new statistic on the hyperoctahedral groups (Coxeter groups of type B), and give a conjectural formula for its signed distributions over arbitrary descent classes. The statistic is analogous to the classical Coxeter length function, and features a parity condition. For descent classes which are singletons the conjectured formula gives the Poincaré polynomials of the varieties of symmetric matrices of fixed rank.
For several descent classes we prove the conjectural formula. For this we construct suitable "supporting sets" for the relevant generating functions. We prove cancellations on the complements of these supporting sets using suitably defined sign reversing involutions.

In a recent paper the first two authors proved that the generating series of the Poincare polynomials of the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes of points in the plane has a simple decomposition in an infinite product. In this paper we give a very short geometrical proof of that formula.

Recently, Choi and Park introduced an invariant of a finite simple graph, called signed a-number, arising from computing certain topological invariants of some specific kinds of real toric manifolds. They also found the signed a-numbers of path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs.
We introduce a signed a-polynomial which is a generalization of the signed a-number and gives a-, b-, and c-numbers. The signed a-polynomial of a graph $G$ is related to the Poincaré polynomial $P_{M(G)}(z)$, which is the generating function for the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$. We give the generating functions for the signed a-polynomials of not only path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs, but also complete bipartite graphs and complete multipartite graphs. As a consequence, we find the Euler characteristic number and the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$ for complete multipartite graphs $G$.

Caldero and Zelevinsky studied the geometry of quiver Grassmannians for the Kronecker quiver and computed their Euler characteristics by examining natural stratification of quiver Grassmannians. We consider generalized Kronecker quivers and compute virtual Poincare polynomials of certain varieties which are the images under projections from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians. In contrast to the Kronecker quiver case, these polynomials do not necessarily have positive coefficients. The key ingredient is the explicit formula for noncommutative cluster variables given by Ralf Schiffler and the first author.

In 1982 Macdonald published his now famous constant term conjectures for classical root systems. This paper begins with the almost trivial observation that Macdonald's constant term identities admit an extra set of free parameters, thereby linking them to Poincare polynomials. We then exploit these extra degrees of freedom in the case of type A to give the first proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture---a symmetric function generalisation of the q-Dyson conjecture or Zeilberger-Bressoud theorem. Key ingredients in our proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture are the polynomial lemma of Karasev and Petrov, the scalar product for Demazure characters and (0,1)-matrices.

In this paper we prove that the generating series of the Poincare polynomials of quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes of points in the plane has a beautiful decomposition into an infinite product. We also compute the generating series of the numbers of quasihomogeneous components in a moduli space of sheaves on the projective plane. The answer is given in terms of characters of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{sl}_m$.

We study a family of infinite-type Coxeter groups defined by the avoidance of certain rank 3 parabolic subgroups. For this family, rationally smooth elements can be detected by looking at only a few coefficients of the Poincaré polynomial. We also prove a factorization theorem for the Poincaré polynomial of rationally smooth elements. As an application, we show that a large class of infinite-type Coxeter groups have only finitely many rationally smooth elements. Explicit enumerations and descriptions of these elements are given in special cases.

We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.

We continue the study of the rational-slope generalized $q,t$-Catalan numbers $c_{m,n}(q,t)$. We describe generalizations of the bijective constructions of J. Haglund and N. Loehr and use them to prove a weak symmetry property $c_{m,n}(q,1)=c_{m,n}(1,q)$ for $m=kn\pm 1$. We give a bijective proof of the full symmetry $c_{m,n}(q,t)=c_{m,n}(t,q)$ for $\min(m,n)\le 3$. As a corollary of these combinatorial constructions, we give a simple formula for the Poincaré polynomials of compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities $x^{kn\pm 1}=y^n$. We also give a geometric interpretation of a relation between rational-slope Catalan numbers and the theory of $(m,n)$-cores discovered by J. Anderson.

We consider the problem of finding the number of matrices over a finite field with a certain rank and with support that avoids a subset of the entries. These matrices are a q-analogue of permutations with restricted positions (i.e., rook placements). For general sets of entries these numbers of matrices are not polynomials in q (Stembridge 98); however, when the set of entries is a Young diagram, the numbers, up to a power of q-1, are polynomials with nonnegative coefficients (Haglund 98).
In this paper, we give a number of conditions under which these numbers are polynomials in q, or even polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We extend Haglund's result to complements of skew Young diagrams, and we apply this result to the case when the set of entries is the Rothe diagram of a permutation. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the permutation for its Rothe diagram to be the complement of a skew Young diagram up to rearrangement of rows and columns. We end by giving conjectures connecting invertible matrices whose support avoids a Rothe diagram and Poincaré polynomials of the strong Bruhat order.

Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.
Cohomology of real Grassmann manifold and KP flow
We consider a realization of the real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) based on a particular flow defined by the corresponding (singular) solution of the KP equation. Then we show that the KP flow can provide an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of Gr(k,n). It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they correspond to the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincare-Lefschetz duality. We also derive an explicit formula of the Poincare polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincare polynomial is also related to the number of points on a suitable version of Gr(k,n) over a finite field $\F_q$ with q being a power of a prime. In particular, we find that the number of $\F_q$ points on Gr(k,n) can be computed by counting the number of singularities along the KP flow.
