A Lucas analogue of Eulerian numbers
The generalized Lucas numbers are polynomials in two variables with nonnegative integer coefficients. Lucas versions of some combinatorial numbers with known formulas in terms of quotient and products of nonnegative integers have been recently given by replacing the integers in those formulas with their corresponding Lucas analogues. We instead use a recursive approach. In this sense, we give a recursive formula for Lucas-Narayana numbers derived from a recent formula in terms of Lucasnomials (the explicit Lucas version of binomial numbers). We propose a recursive definition for a Lucas analogue of the classical Eulerian numbers, which shows immediately that they are polynomials in two variables with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove that they are palindromic like their standard counterparts. The recursive approach allows us to give Lucas analogues of many relevant combinatorial constants. In particular, Lucas versions for both Stirling numbers of the second kind and Motzkin numbers are presented.
Linking number of monotonic cycles in random book embeddings of complete graphs
A book embedding of a complete graph is a spatial embedding whose planar projection has the vertices located along a circle, consecutive vertices are connected by arcs of the circle, and the projections of the remaining "interior" edges in the graph are straight line segments between the points on the circle representing the appropriate vertices. A random embedding of a complete graph can be generated by randomly assigning relative heights to these interior edges. We study a family of two-component links that arise as the realizations of pairs of disjoint cycles in these random embeddings of graphs. In particular, we show that the distribution of linking numbers can be described in terms of Eulerian numbers. Consequently, the mean of the squared linking number over all random embeddings is $\frac{i}{6}$, where $i$ is the number of interior edges in the cycles. We also show that the mean of the squared linking number over all pairs of $n$-cycles in $K_{2n}$ grows linearly in $n$.

Random Recursive Hypergraphs
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56, 195001 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Random recursive hypergraphs grow by adding, at each step, a vertex and an edge formed by joining the new vertex to a randomly chosen existing edge. The model is parameter-free, and several characteristics of emerging hypergraphs admit neat expressions via harmonic numbers, Bernoulli numbers, Eulerian numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Natural deformations of random recursive hypergraphs give rise to fascinating models of growing random hypergraphs.

Remixed Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Remixed Eulerian numbers are a polynomial $q$-deformation of Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers. They arose naturally in previous work by the authors concerning the permutahedral variety and subsume well-known families of polynomials such as $q$-binomial coefficients and Garsia--Remmel's $q$-hit numbers. We study their combinatorics in more depth. As polynomials in $q$, they are shown to be symmetric and unimodal. By interpreting them as computing success probabilities in a simple probabilistic process we arrive at a combinatorial interpretation involving weighted trees. By decomposing the permutahedron into certain combinatorial cubes, we obtain a second combinatorial interpretation. At $q=1$, the former recovers Postnikov's interpretation whereas the latter recovers Liu's interpretation, both of which were obtained via methods different from ours.

Down-up algebras and chromatic symmetric functions
We establish Guay-Paquet's unpublished linear relation between certain chromatic symmetric functions by relating his algebra on paths to the $q$-Klyachko algebra. The coefficients in this relations are $q$-hit polynomials, and they come up naturally in our setup as connected remixed Eulerian numbers, in contrast to the computational approach of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova. As Guay-Paquet's algebra is a down-up algebra, we are able to harness algebraic results in the context of the latter and establish results of a combinatorial flavour. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova on chromatic symmetric functions. This concerns the abelian case of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, which we briefly survey.

Stirling's approximation and a hidden link between two of Ramanujan's approximations
A conjectured relation between Ramanujan's asymptotic approximations to the exponential function and the exponential integral is established. The proof involves Stirling numbers, second-order Eulerian numbers, modifications of both of these, and Stirling's approximation to the gamma function. Our work provides new information about the coefficients in Stirling's approximation and their connection to Ramanujan's approximation coefficients. A more analytic second proof of the main result is also included in an appendix.

Triangular Recurrences, Generalized Eulerian Numbers, and Related Number Triangles
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 146 (2023), Paper No. 102485, 62 pp • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial and other number triangles are solutions of recurrences of the Graham-Knuth-Patashnik (GKP) type. Such triangles and their defining recurrences are investigated analytically. They are acted on by a transformation group generated by two involutions: a left-right reflection and an upper binomial transformation, acting row-wise. The group also acts on the bivariate exponential generating function (EGF) of the triangle. By the method of characteristics, the EGF of any GKP triangle has an implicit representation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. There are several parametric cases when this EGF can be obtained in closed form. One is when the triangle elements are the generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue. Another is when they are generalized Eulerian numbers of a newly defined kind. These numbers are related to the Hsu-Shiue ones by an upper binomial transformation, and can be viewed as coefficients of connection between polynomial bases, in a manner that generalizes the classical Worpitzky identity. Many identities involving these generalized Eulerian numbers and related generalized Narayana numbers are derived, including closed-form evaluations in combinatorially significant cases.

A poset version of Ramanujan results on Eulerian numbers and zeta values
We explore the operad of finite posets and its algebras. We use order polytopes to investigate the combinatorial properties of zeta values. By generalizing a family of zeta value identities, we demonstrate the applicability of this approach. In addition, we offer new proofs of some of Ramanujan's results on the properties of Eulerian numbers, interpreting his work as dealing with series inheriting the algebraic structure of disjoint unions of points. Finally, we establish a connection between our findings and the linear independence of zeta values.

Weighted Ehrhart series and a type-$\mathsf{B}$ analogue of a formula of MacMahon
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a formula for a generalisation of the Eulerian polynomial, namely the generating polynomial of the joint distribution of major index and descent statistic over the set of signed multiset permutations. It has a description in terms of the $h^*$-polynomial of a certain polytope. Moreover, we associate a family of polytopes to (generalised) Eulerian polynomials of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$. Using this connection, properties of the generalised Eulerian numbers of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$, such as palindromicity and unimodality, are reflected in certain properties of the associated polytope. We also present results on generalising the connection between descent polynomials and polytopes to coloured (multiset) permutations.

Statistics on bargraphs of inversion sequences of permutations
Published in Discrete Math. Letters 4 (2020), 37-44 • Search Publication
We consider the joint distribution of the area and perimeter statistics on the set I_n of inversion sequences of length n represented as bargraphs. Functional equations for both the ordinary and exponential generating functions are derived from recurrences satisfied by this distribution. Explicit formulas are found in some special cases as are expressions for the totals of the respective statistics on I_n. A similar treatment is provided for the joint distribution on I_n for the statistics recording the number of levels, descents and ascents. Some connections are made between specific cases of this latter distribution and the Stirling numbers of the first kind and Eulerian numbers.

Lattice points in slices of prisms
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 77 (2025) 1013-1040 • View PublicationBIB
We conduct a systematic study of the Ehrhart theory of certain slices of rectangular prisms. Our polytopes are generalizations of the hypersimplex and are contained in the larger class of polypositroids introduced by Lam and Postnikov; moreover, they coincide with polymatroids satisfying the strong exchange property up to an affinity. We give a combinatorial formula for all the Ehrhart coefficients in terms of the number of weighted permutations satisfying certain compatibility properties. This result proves that all these polytopes are Ehrhart positive. Additionally, via an extension of a result by Early and Kim, we give a combinatorial interpretation for all the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial. All of our results provide a combinatorial understanding of the Hilbert functions and the $h$-vectors of all algebras of Veronese type, a problem that had remained elusive up to this point. A variety of applications are discussed, including expressions for the volumes of these slices of prisms as weighted combinations of Eulerian numbers; some extensions of Laplace's result on the combinatorial interpretation of the volume of the hypersimplex; a multivariate generalization of the flag Eulerian numbers and refinements; and a short proof of the Ehrhart positivity of the independence polytope of all uniform matroids.
Ehrhart Theory of Paving and Panhandle Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the base polytope $P_M$ of any paving matroid $M$ can be systematically obtained from a hypersimplex by slicing off certain subpolytopes, namely base polytopes of lattice path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. We calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of these matroids and consequently write down the Ehrhart polynomial of $P_M$, starting with Katzman's formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a hypersimplex. The method builds on and generalizes Ferroni's work on sparse paving matroids. Combinatorially, our construction corresponds to constructing a uniform matroid from a paving matroid by iterating the operation of stressed-hyperplane relaxation introduced by Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi, which generalizes the standard matroid-theoretic notion of circuit-hyperplane relaxation. We present evidence that panhandle matroids are Ehrhart positive and describe a conjectured combinatorial formula involving chain forests and Eulerian numbers from which Ehrhart positivity of panhandle matroids will follow. As an application of the main result, we calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of matroids associated with Steiner systems and finite projective planes, and show that they depend only on their design-theoretic parameters: for example, while projective planes of the same order need not have isomorphic matroids, their base polytopes must be Ehrhart equivalent.

Enumerating threshold graphs and some related graph classes
We give combinatorial proofs of some enumeration formulas involving labelled threshold, quasi-threshold, loop-threshold and quasi-loop-threshold graphs. In each case we count by number of vertices and number of components. For threshold graphs, we also count by number of dominating vertices, and for loop-threshold graphs we count by number of looped dominating vertices. We also obtain an analog of the Frobenius formula (connecting Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind) in the context of labelled threshold graphs.

A $q$-deformation of an algebra of Klyachko and Macdonald's reduced word formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a striking similarity between Macdonald's reduced word formula and the image of the Schubert class in the cohomology ring of the permutahedral variety $\mathrm{Perm}_n$ as computed by Klyachko. Toward understanding this better, we undertake an in-depth study of a $q$-deformation of the $\mathbb{S}_n$-invariant part of the rational cohomology ring of $\mathrm{Perm}_n$, which we call the $q$-Klyachko algebra. We uncover intimate links between expansions in the basis of squarefree monomials in this algebra and various notions in algebraic combinatorics, thereby connecting seemingly unrelated results by finding a common ground to study them. Our main results are as follows. 1) A $q$-analog of divided symmetrization ($q$-DS) using Yang-Baxter elements in the Hecke algebra. It is a linear form that picks up coefficients in the squarefree basis. 2) A relation between $q$-DS and the ideal of quasisymmetric polynomials involving work of Aval--Bergeron--Bergeron. 3) A family of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative integral coefficients that specialize to Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers when $q=1$. We refer to these new polynomials as remixed Eulerian numbers. For $q>0$, their normalized versions occur as probabilities in the internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) stochastic process. 4) A lift of Macdonald's reduced word identity in the $q$-Klyachko algebra. 5) The Schubert expansion of the Chow class of the standard split Deligne--Lusztig variety in type $A$, when $q$ is a prime power.

Mixed Eulerian numbers and Peterson Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be a root system. Postnikov introduced and studied the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers. These numbers indicate the mixed volumes of $Φ$-hypersimplices. As specializations of these numbers, one can obtain the usual Eulerian numbers, the Catalan numbers, and the binomial coefficients. Recent work of Berget-Spink-Tseng gave a simple computation for the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers when $Φ$ is of type $A$. In this paper we connect a relation between mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers and Peterson Schubert calculus. By using the connection, we provide a combinatorial model for the computation of Berget-Spink-Tseng in terms of left-right diagrams which were introduced by Abe-Horiguchi-Kuwata-Zeng for the purpose of Peterson Schubert calculus. We also derive a simple computation for the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers in arbitrary Lie types from Peterson Schubert calculus.

Some Identities Related to the Second-Order Eulerian Numbers
We express the Nörlund polynomials in terms of the second-order Eulerian numbers. Based on this expression, we derive several identities related to the Bernoulli numbers. In particular, we present a short proof of the problem raised by Rzcadkowski and Urlińska.
The m=2 amplituhedron and the hypersimplex: signs, clusters, triangulations, Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The hypersimplex $Δ_{k+1,n}$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map. It is a polytope of dimension $n-1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Meanwhile, the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ is the projection of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ into $Gr_{k,k+2}$ under a map $\tilde{Z}$ induced by a matrix $Z\in \text{Mat}_{n,k+2}^{>0}$. Introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes, it is not a polytope, and has dimension $2k$. Nevertheless, there seem to be remarkable connections between these two objects via T-duality, as was first noted by Lukowski--Parisi--Williams (LPW). In this paper we use ideas from oriented matroid theory, total positivity, and the geometry of the hypersimplex and positroid polytopes to obtain a deeper understanding of the amplituhedron. We show that the inequalities cutting out positroid polytopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map -- translate into sign conditions characterizing the T-dual Grasstopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ under $\tilde{Z}$. Moreover, we subdivide the amplituhedron into chambers, just as the hypersimplex can be subdivided into simplices, with both chambers and simplices enumerated by the Eulerian numbers. We prove the main conjecture of (LPW): a collection of positroid polytopes is a triangulation of $Δ_{k+1, n}$ if and only if the collection of T-dual Grasstopes is a triangulation of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ for all $Z$. Moreover, we prove Arkani-Hamed--Thomas--Trnka's conjectural sign-flip characterization of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$, and Lukowski--Parisi--Spradlin--Volovich's conjectures on $m=2$ cluster adjacency and on generalized triangles (images of $2k$-dimensional positroid cells which map injectively into $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$). Finally, we introduce new cluster structures in the amplituhedron.

Refined Eulerian numbers and ballot permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A ballot permutation is a permutation π such that in any prefix of π the descent number is not more than the ascent number. In this article, we obtained a formula in close form for the multivariate generating function of {A(n,d,j)}, which denote the number of permutations of length n with d descents and j as the first letter. Besides, by a series of calculations with generatingfunctionology, we confirm a recent conjecture of Wang and Zhang for ballot permutations.

Weighted Sylvester sums on the Frobenius set in more variables

Let $a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k$ be positive integers with $\gcd(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k)=1$. Let ${\rm NR}={\rm NR}(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k)$ denote the set of positive integers nonrepresentable in terms of $a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k$. The largest nonrepresentable integer $\max{\rm NR}$, the number of nonrepresentable positive integers $\sum_{n\in{\rm NR}}1$ and the sum of nonrepresentable positive integers $\sum_{n\in{\rm NR}}n$ have been widely studied for a long time as related to the famous Frobenius problem. In this paper by using Eulerian numbers, we give formulas for the weighted sum $\sum_{n\in{\rm NR}}λ^{n}n^μ$, where $μ$ is a nonnegative integer and $λ$ is a complex number. We also examine power sums of nonrepresentable numbers and some formulae for three variables. Several examples illustrate and support our results.

Counterbalancing steps at random in a random walk
Published • View PublicationBIB
A random walk with counterbalanced steps is a process of partial sums $\check S(n)=\check X_1+ \cdots + \check X_n$ whose steps $\check X_n$ are given recursively as follows. For each $n\geq 2$, with a fixed probability $p$, $\check X_n$ is a new independent sample from some fixed law $μ$, and with complementary probability $1-p$, $\check X_n= -\check X_{v(n)}$ counterbalances a previous step, with $v(n)$ a uniform random pick from $\{1, \ldots, n-1\}$. We determine the asymptotic behavior of $\check S(n)$ in terms of $p$ and the first two moments of $μ$. Our approach relies on a coupling with a reinforcement algorithm due to H.A. Simon, and on properties of random recursive trees and Eulerian numbers, which may be of independent interest. The method can be adapted to the situation where the step distribution $μ$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law.
