An order on circular permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivation coming from the study of affine Weyl groups, a structure of ranked poset is defined on the set of circular permutations in $S_n$ (that is, $n$-cycles). It is isomorphic to the poset of so-called admitted vectors, and to an interval in the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_n$ with the weak order. The poset is a semidistributive lattice, and the rank function, whose range is cubic in $n$, is computed by some special formula involving inversions. We prove also some links with Eulerian numbers, triangulations of an $n$-gon, and Young's lattice.

Log-concavity of the Excedance Enumerators in positive elements of Type A and Type B Coxeter Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Eulerian Numbers $A_{n,k}$ are known to be log-concave. Let $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ be the number of even and odd permutations with $k$ excedances. In this paper, we show that $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ are log-concave. For this, we introduce the notion of strong synchronisation and ratio-alternating which are motivated by the notion of synchronisation and ratio-dominance, introduced by Gross, Mansour, Tucker and Wang in 2014. We show similar results for Type B Coxeter Groups. We finish with some conjectures to emphasize the following: though strong synchronisation is stronger than log-concavity, many pairs of interesting combinatorial families of sequences seem to satisfy this property.

Sign variation and descents
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27(4) (2020), #P4.50 • View PublicationBIB
For any $n > 0$ and $0 \leq m < n$, let $P_{n,m}$ be the poset of projective equivalence classes of $\{-,0,+\}$-vectors of length $n$ with sign variation bounded by $m$, ordered by reverse inclusion of the positions of zeros. Let $Δ_{n,m}$ be the order complex of $P_{n,m}$. A previous result from the third author shows that $Δ_{n,m}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over $\mathbb{Q}$ whenever $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. Hence, it follows that the $h$-vector of $Δ_{n,m}$ consists of nonnegative entries. Our main result states that $Δ_{n,m}$ is partitionable and we give an interpretation of the $h$-vector when $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. When $m = n-1$ the entries of the $h$-vector turn out to be the new Eulerian numbers of type $D$ studied by Borowiec and Młotkowski in [{\em Electron. J. Combin.}, 23(1):Paper 1.38, 13, 2016]. We then combine our main result with Klee's generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations to give a geometric proof of some facts about these Eulerian numbers of type $D$.

Generalized permutations related to the degenerate Eulerian numbers
In this work we propose a combinatorial model that generalizes the standard definition of permutation. Our model generalizes the degenerate Eulerian polynomials and numbers of Carlitz from 1979 and provides missing combinatorial proofs for some relations on the degenerate Eulerian numbers.

A unified approach to combinatorial triangles: a generalized Eulerian polynomial
Motivated by the classical Eulerian number, descent and excedance numbers in the hyperoctahedral groups, an triangular array from staircase tableaux and so on, we study a triangular array $[\mathcal {T}_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} \mathcal {T}_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{cd}λ(n-k+1)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $\mathcal {T}_{0,0}=1$ and $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We derive a functional transformation for its row-generating function $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ from the row-generating function $A_n(x)$ of another array $[A_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ satisfying a two-term recurrence relation. Based on this transformation, we can get properties of $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}$ and $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ including nonnegativity, log-concavity, real rootedness, explicit formula and so on. Then we extend the famous Frobenius formula, the $γ$ positivity decomposition and the David-Barton formula for the classical Eulerian polynomial to those of a generalized Eulerian polynomial. We also get an identity for the generalized Eulerian polynomial with the general derivative polynomial. Finally, we apply our results to an array from the Lambert function, a triangular array from staircase tableaux and the alternating-runs triangle of type $B$ in a unified approach.

The permutahedral variety, mixed Eulerian numbers, and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 5, March 2023, Pages 3615--3670 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in the basis of Schubert classes. The resulting structure constants $a_w$ are expressed as a sum of \emph{normalized} mixed Eulerian numbers indexed naturally by reduced words of $w$. The description implies that the $a_w$ are positive for all permutations $w\in S_n$ of length $n-1$, thereby answering a question of Harada, Horiguchi, Masuda and Park. We use the same expression to establish the invariance of $a_w$ under taking inverses and conjugation by the longest word, and subsequently establish an intriguing cyclic sum rule for the numbers. We then move toward a deeper combinatorial understanding for the $a_w$ by exploiting in addition the relation to Postnikov's divided symmetrization. Finally, we are able to give a combinatorial interpretation for $a_w$ when $w$ is vexillary, in terms of certain tableau descents. It is based in part on a relation between the numbers $a_w$ and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we prove results and raise questions of independent interest about the combinatorics of permutations, Schubert polynomials and related objects. We also sketch how to extend our approach to other Lie types, highlighting in particular an identity of Klyachko.

Log-concavity of matroid h-vectors and mixed Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any matroid $M$, we compute the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ using the mixed intersection numbers of certain classes in the combinatorial Chow ring $A^\bullet(M)$ arising from hypersimplices. Using the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations, we deduce a strengthening of the log-concavity of the $h$-vector of a matroid complex, improving on an old conjecture of Dawson.

The Worpitzky identity for the groups of signed and even-signed permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The well-known Worpitzky identity provides a connection between two bases of $\mathbb{Q}[x]$: The standard basis $(x+1)^n$ and the binomial basis ${{x+n-i} \choose {n}}$, where the Eulerian numbers for the Coxeter group of type $A$ (the symmetric group) serve as the entries of the transformation matrix. Brenti has generalized this identity to the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$ (signed and even-signed permutations groups, respectively) using generating function techniques. Motivated by Foata-Schützenberger and Rawlings' proof for the Worpitzky identity in the symmetric group, we provide combinatorial proofs of this identity and for their $q-$analogues in the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$.
On the joint distribution of descents and signs of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the joint distribution of descents and sign for elements of the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group (Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $B$). For both groups, this has an application to riffle shuffling: for large decks of cards the sign is close to random after a single shuffle. In both groups, we derive generating functions for the Eulerian distribution refined according to sign, and use them to give two proofs of central limit theorems for positive and negative Eulerian numbers.

Colored Multipermutations and a Combinatorial Generalization of Worpitzky's Identity
Worpitzky's identity expresses $n^p$ in terms of the Eulerian numbers and binomial coefficients: $$n^p = \sum_{i=0}^{p-1} \genfrac<>{0pt}{}{p}{i} \binom{n+i}{p}.$$ Pita-Ruiz recently defined numbers $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$ implicitly to satisfy a generalized Worpitzky identity $$\binom{an+b}{r}^p = \sum_{i=0}^{rp} A_{a,b,r}(p,i) \binom{n+rp-i}{rp},$$ and asked whether there is a combinatorial interpretation of the numbers $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$. We provide such a combinatorial interpretation by defining a notion of descents in colored multipermutations, and then proving that $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$ is equal to the number of colored multipermutations of $\{1^r, 2^r, \ldots, p^r\}$ with $a$ colors and $i$ weak descents. We use this to give combinatorial proofs of several identities involving $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$, including the aforementioned generalized Worpitzky identity.

Counting Labeled Threshold Graphs with Eulerian Numbers
A threshold graph is any graph which can be constructed from the empty graph by repeatedly adding a new vertex that is either adjacent to every vertex or to no vertices. The Eulerian number $\genfrac{\langle}{\rangle}{0pt}{}{n}{k}$ counts the number of permutations of size $n$ with exactly $k$ ascents. Implicitly Beissinger and Peled proved that the number of labeled threshold graphs on $n\ge 2$ vertices is \[\sum_{k=1}^{n-1}(n-k)\genfrac{\langle}{\rangle}{0pt}{}{n-1}{k-1}2^k.\] Their proof used generating functions. We give a direct combinatorial proof of this result.

Limits of Sums for Binomial and Eulerian Numbers and their Associated Distributions
We provide a unified, probabilistic approach using renewal theory to derive some novel limits of sums for the normalized binomial coefficients and for the normalized Eulerian numbers. We also investigate some corresponding results for their associated distributions -- the binomial distributions for the binomial coefficients and the Irwin-Hall distributions (uniform B-splines) for the Eulerian numbers.

Moser Polynomials and Eulerian Numbers
Article presents a short investigation into some properties of the Moser polynomials which appear in various problems from algebraic combinatorics. For instance, these polynomials can be used to solve the Generalized Moser's Problem on multiset recovery: Can a collection (multiset) of $n$ numbers can be uniquely restored given the collection of its $s$-sums? We prove some explicit formulas showing relationships between Moser polynomials and such popular algebraic combinatorial sequences as Eulerian and Stirling numbers.

A Stochastic Approach to Eulerian Numbers
We examine the aggregate behavior of one-dimensional random walks in a model known as (one-dimensional) Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation. In this model, a sequence of $n$ particles perform random walks on the integers, beginning at the origin. Each particle walks until it reaches an unoccupied site, at which point it occupies that site and the next particle begins its walk. After all walks are complete, the set of occupied sites is an interval of length $n$ containing the origin. We show the probability that $k$ of the occupied sites are positive is given by an Eulerian probability distribution. Having made this connection, we use generating function techniques to compute the expected run time of the model.

Some identities involving second kind Stirling numbers of types $B$ and $D$
Published in Electro. J. Combin. 26(3) (2019), P3.9 • Search Publication
Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of the second kind in types $B$ and $D$, we generalize two well-known identities concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. The first identity relates them with Eulerian numbers and the second identity interprets them as entries in a transition matrix between the elements of two standard bases of the polynomial ring $R[x]$. Finally, we generalize these identities to the group of colored permutations $G_{m,n}$.

Martingales and descent statistics
This paper develops techniques to study the number of descents in random permutations via martingales. We relax an assumption in the Berry-Esseen theorem of Bolthausen (1982) to extend the theorem's scope to martingale differences of time-dependent variances. This extension leads to a new proof of the fact that the number of descents in random permutations is asymptotically normal with an error bound of order $1/\sqrt{n}.$ The same techniques are shown to be applicable to other descent and descent-related statistics as they satisfy certain recurrence relation conditions. These statistics include inversions, descents in signed permutations, descents in Stirling permutations, the length of the longest alternating subsequences, descents in matchings and two-sided Eulerian numbers.

Some conjectures on the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

Some properties of a class of refined Eulerian polynomials
In recent, H. Sun defined a new kind of refined Eulerian polynomials, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} A_n(p,q)=\sum_{π\in \mathfrak{S}_n}p^{{\rm odes}(π)}q^{{\rm edes}(π)} \end{eqnarray*} for $n\geq 1$, where ${odes}(π)$ and ${edes}(π)$ enumerate the number of descents of permutation $π$ in odd and even positions, respectively. In this paper, we build an exponential generating function for $A_{n}(p,q)$ and establish an explicit formula for $A_{n}(p,q)$ in terms of Eulerian polynomials $A_{n}(q)$ and $C(q)$, the generating function for Catalan numbers. In certain special case, we set up a connection between $A_{n}(p,q)$ and $A_{n}(p,0)$ or $A_{n}(0,q)$, and express the coefficients of $A_{n}(0,q)$ by Eulerian numbers. Specially, this connection creates a new relation between Euler numbers and Eulerian numbers.

Ballot Permutations and Odd Order Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation $π$ is ballot if, for all $k$, the word $π_1\cdots π_k$ has at least as many ascents as it has descents. Let $b(n)$ denote the number of ballot permutations of order $n$, and let $p(n)$ denote the number of permutations which have odd order in the symmetric group $S_n$. Callan conjectured that $b(n)=p(n)$ for all $n$, which was proved by Bernardi, Duplantier, and Nadeau. We propose a refinement of Callan's original conjecture. Let $b(n,d)$ denote the number of ballot permutations with $d$ descents. Let $p(n,d)$ denote the number of odd order permutations with $M(π)=d$, where $M(π)$ is a certain statistic related to the cyclic descents of $π$. We conjecture that $b(n,d)=p(n,d)$ for all $n$ and $d$. We prove this stronger conjecture for the cases $d=1,\ 2,\ 3$, and $d=\lfloor(n-1)/2\rfloor$, and in each of these cases we establish formulas for $b(n,d)$ involving Eulerian numbers and Eulerian-Catalan numbers.

Eulerian polynomials on segmented permutations
We define a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials and the Eulerian numbers by considering a descent statistic on segmented permutations coming from the study of 2-species exclusion processes and a change of basis in a Hopf algebra. We give some properties satisfied by these generalized Eulerian numbers. We also define a $q$-analog of these Eulerian polynomials which gives back usual Eulerian polynomials and ordered Bell polynomials for specific values of its variables. We also define a noncommutative analog living in the algebra of segmented compositions. It gives us an explicit generating function and some identities satisfied by the generalized Eulerian polynomials such as a Worpitzky-type relation.
