Combinatorial interpretations of the Kreweras triangle in terms of subset tuples
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show how the combinatorial interpretation of the normalized median Genocchi numbers in terms of multiset tuples, defined by Hetyei in his study of the alternation acyclic tournaments, is bijectively equivalent to previous models like the normalized Dumont permutations or the Dellac configurations, and we extend the interpretation to the Kreweras triangle.

Combinatorial proofs of some properties of tangent and Genocchi numbers
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics,2018,13pages • View PublicationBIB
The tangent number $T_{2n+1}$ is equal to the number of increasing labelled complete binary trees with $2n+1$ vertices. This combinatorial interpretation immediately proves that $T_{2n+1}$ is divisible by $2^n$. However, a stronger divisibility property is known in the studies of Bernoulli and Genocchi numbers, namely, the divisibility of $(n+1)T_{2n+1}$ by $2^{2n}$. The traditional proofs of this fact need significant calculations. In the present paper, we provide a combinatorial proof of the latter divisibility by using the hook length formula for trees. Furthermore, our method is extended to $k$-ary trees, leading to a new generalization of the Genocchi numbers.

Enumerating the symplectic Dellac configurations
Fang and Fourier defined the symplectic Dellac configurations in order to parametrize the torus fixed points of the symplectic degenerated flag varieties, and conjectured that their numbers are the elements of a sequence of integers (1, 2, 10, 98, 1594, ...) which appears in the study by Randrianarivony and Zeng of the median Euler numbers. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by considering a combinatorial interpretation of these integers in terms of the surjective pistols (which form a well-known combinatorial model of the Genocchi numbers), and constructing an appropriate surjection from the symplectic Dellac configurations to the surjective pistols.

Alternation acyclic tournaments
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a tournament to be alternation acyclic if it does not contain a cycle in which descents and ascents alternate. Using a result by Athanasiadis on hyperplane arrangements, we show that these tournaments are counted by the median Genocchi numbers. By establishing a bijection with objects defined by Dumont, we show that alternation acyclic tournaments in which at least one ascent begins at each vertex, except for the largest one, are counted by the Genocchi numbers of the first kind. Unexpected consequences of our results include a pair of ordinary generating function formulas for the Genocchi numbers of both kinds and a new very simple model for the normalized median Genocchi numbers.

Torus fixed points in Schubert varieties and normalized median Genocchi numbers
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 75 (2016), Article B75f • Search Publication
We give a new proof for the fact that the number of torus fixed points for the degenerated flag variety is equal to the normalized median Genocchi number, using the identification with a certain Schubert variety. We further study the torus fixed points for the symplectic degenerated flag variety and develop a combinatorial model, symplectic Dellac configurations, so parametrize them. The number of these symplectic fixed points is conjectured to be the median Euler number.

Combinatorial study of the Dellac configurations and the q-extended normalized median Genocchi numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In two recent papers (\textit{Mathematical Research Letters,18(6):1163--1178,2011} and \textit{European J. Combin.,33(8):1913--1918,2012}), Feigin proved that the Poincaré polynomials of the degenerate flag varieties have a combinatorial interpretation through the Dellac configurations, and related them to the $q$-extended normalized median Genocchi numbers $\bar{c}_n(q)$ introduced by Han and Zeng, mainly by geometric considerations. In this paper, we give combinatorial proofs of these results by constructing statistic-preserving bijections between the Dellac configurations and two other combinatorial models of $\bar{c}_n(q)$.

A bijection between the irreducible k-shapes and the surjective pistols of height k-1
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper constructs a bijection between irreducible $k$-shapes and surjective pistols of height $k-1$, which carries the "free $k$-sites" to the fixed points of surjective pistols. The bijection confirms a conjecture of Hivert and Mallet (FPSAC 2011) that the number of irreducible $k$-shape is counted by the Genocchi number $G_{2k}$.

Cardinality of $\ell_1$-Segments and Genocchi Numbers
We prove that the Genocchi numbers of first and second kind give the cardinality of certain segments in permutation spaces, with respect to the $\ell_1$-distance. Experimental data suggests that those segments have maximal cardinality among all segments in the corresponding spaces.

On the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero and their applications
Published in Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications 18 (2013) 193-203 • Search Publication
In this paper, the authors deal with the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero. They discover some interesting relations via the $p$-adic $q$-integral on $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and familiar basis Bernstein polynomials. Finally, the authors show that the $p$-adic $\log$ gamma functions are associated with the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero.

A note on the modified q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight (α,β) and their interpolation function at negative integers
Published in Journal of Fasciculi mathematici, Politechnika Poznanska. Instytut Matematyki, No. 51 (2013), 21-32 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper concerns to establish modified q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight (α,β). In this paper we investigate special generalized q-Genocchi polynomials and we apply the method of generating function, which are exploited to derive further classes of q-Genocchi polynomials and develop q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials. By using the Laplace-Mellin transformation integral, we define q-Zeta function with weight (α,β) and by presenting a link between q-Zeta function with weight (α,β) and q-Genocchi numbers with weight (α,β) we obtain an interpolation formula for the q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight (α,β). Also we derive distribution formula (Multiplication Theorem) and Witt's type formula for modified q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight (α,β) which yield a deeper insight into the effectiveness of this type of generalizations for q=Genocchi numbers and polynomials. Our new generating function possess a number of interesting properties which we state in this paper.

The median Genocchi numbers, Q-analogues and continued fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we review the recently developed geometric approach to the combinatorics of the median Genocchi numbers. The Genocchi numbers appear in this context as Euler characteristics of the degenerate flag varieties. Second, we prove that the generating function of the Poincar\' e polynomials of the degenerate flag varieties can be written as a simple continued fraction. As an application we prove that the Poincar\' e polynomials coincide with the $q$-version of the normalized median Genocchi numbers introduced by Han and Zeng.
Quiver Grassmannians and degenerate flag varieties
Published in ALGEBRA & NUMBER THEORY, vol. 6, p. 165-194, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.

Touchard-Riordan formulas, T-fractions, and Jacobi's triple product identity
Published in Ramanujan Journal 30(3) (2013), 341--378 • View PublicationBIB
Touchard-Riordan-like formulas are some expressions appearing in enumeration problems and as moments of orthogonal polynomials. We begin this article with a new combinatorial approach to prove these kind of formulas, related with integer partitions. This gives a new perspective on the original result of Touchard and Riordan. But the main goal is to give a combinatorial proof of a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for q-secant numbers discovered by the first author. An interesting limit case of these objects can be directly interpreted in terms of partitions, so that we obtain a connection between the formula for q-secant numbers, and a particular case of Jacobi's triple product identity. Building on this particular case, we obtain a "finite version" of the triple product identity. It is in the form of a finite sum which is given a combinatorial meaning, so that the triple product identity can be obtained by taking the limit. Here the proof is non-combinatorial and relies on a functional equation satisfied by a T-fraction. Then from this result on the triple product identity, we derive a whole new family of Touchard-Riordan--like formulas whose combinatorics is not yet understood. Eventually, we prove a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for a q-analog of Genocchi numbers, which is related with Jacobi's identity for (q;q)^3 rather than the triple product identity.

Degenerate flag varieties and the median Genocchi numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the $\bG_a^M$ degenerations $\Fl^a_\la$ of the type $A$ flag varieties $\Fl_\la$. We describe these degenerations explicitly as subvarieties in the products of Grassmanians. We construct cell decompositions of $\Fl^a_\la$ and show that for complete flags the number of cells is equal to the normalized median Genocchi numbers $h_n$. This leads to a new combinatorial definition of the numbers $h_n$. We also compute the Poincar\' e polynomials of the complete degenerate flag varieties via a natural statistics on the set of Dellac's configurations, similar to the length statistics on the set of permutations. We thus obtain a natural $q$-version of the normalized median Genocchi numbers.

Generalized Dumont-Foata polynomials and alternative tableaux
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 64 (2010), Article B64b, 17pp • Search Publication
Dumont and Foata introduced in 1976 a three-variable symmetric refinement of Genocchi numbers, which satisfies a simple recurrence relation. A six-variable generalization with many similar properties was later considered by Dumont. They generalize a lot of known integer sequences, and their ordinary generating function can be expanded as a Jacobi continued fraction. We give here a new combinatorial interpretation of the six-variable polynomials in terms of the alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. A powerful tool to enumerate alternative tableaux is the so-called "matrix Ansatz", and using this we show that our combinatorial interpretation naturally leads to a new proof of the continued fraction expansion.
Boolean complexes for Ferrers graphs
In this paper we provide an explicit formula for calculating the boolean number of a Ferrers graph. By previous work of the last two authors, this determines the homotopy type of the boolean complex of the graph. Specializing to staircase shapes, we show that the boolean numbers of the associated Ferrers graphs are the Genocchi numbers of the second kind, and obtain a relation between the Legendre-Stirling numbers and the Genocchi numbers of the second kind. In another application, we compute the boolean number of a complete bipartite graph, corresponding to a rectangular Ferrers shape, which is expressed in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. Finally, we analyze the complexity of calculating the boolean number of a Ferrers graph using these results and show that it is a significant improvement over calculating by edge recursion.
Permutation statistics related to a class of noncommutative symmetric functions and generalizations of the Genocchi numbers

We prove conjectures of the third author [L. Tevlin, Proc. FPSAC'07, Tianjin] on two new bases of noncommutative symmetric functions: the transition matrices from the ribbon basis have nonnegative integral coefficients. This is done by means of two composition-valued statistics on permutations and packed words, which generalize the combinatorics of Genocchi numbers.

Genocchi Numbers and f-Vectors of Simplicial Balls
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 29 (2008), no. 5, 1087-109 • View PublicationBIB
The Genocchi numbers are the coefficients of the generating function 2t/(e^t+1). In this note we will give an equation for simplicial balls which involves this numbers. It relates the number of faces in the interior of the ball with the number of faces in the boundary of the ball. This is a variation of similar equations given in [McMullen 2004] and [Herrmann and Joswig 2006].

Classifying Descents According to Parity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we refine the well-known permutation statistic "descent" by fixing parity of (exactly) one of the descent's numbers. We provide explicit formulas for the distribution of these (four) new statistics. We use certain differential operators to obtain the formulas. Moreover, we discuss connection of our new statistics to the Genocchi numbers. We also provide bijective proofs of some of our results.
