Gamma positivity of variations of $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials
In 1977 Carlitz and Scoville introduced the cycle $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials $A^{\mathrm{cyc}}_n(x,y, t\,|\,α)$ by enumerating permutations with respect to the number of excedances, drops, fixed points and cycles. In this paper, we introduce a nine-variable generalization of the Eulerian polynomials $A_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4, f, g, t\,|\,α, β)$ in terms of descent based statistics of permutations and prove a connection formula between these two kinds of generalized Eulerian polynomials. By exploring the connection formula, we derive plainly the exponential generating function of the latter polynomials and various $γ$-positive formulas for variants of Eulerian polynomials. In particular, our results unify and strengthen the recent results by Ji and Ji-Lin. In related work to the transition matrix between the Specht and web bases, Hwang, Jang and Oh recently introduced the web permutations, which can be characterised by cycle André permutations. We show that enumerating the latter permutations with respect to the number of drops, fixed points and cycles gives rise to the normalised $γ$-vectors of the $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials. Our result generalizes and unifies several known results in the literature.

Canon permutations and generalized descents of standard Young tableaux
Canon permutations are permutations of the multiset having $k$ copies of each integer between $1$ and $n$, with the property that the subsequences obtained by taking the $j$th copy of each entry, for each fixed $j$, are all the same. For $k=2$, canon permutations are sometimes called nonnesting permutations, and it is known that the polynomial that enumerates them by the number of descents factors as a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$, and we relate the problem to the enumeration of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape with respect to generalized descent statistics. Our proof is bijective, and it also settles a conjecture of Sulanke about the distribution of certain lattice path statistics.

Stable multivariate Narayana polynomials and labeled plane trees
In this paper, we introduce stable multivariate generalizations of Narayana polynomials of type A and type B. We give an insertion algorithm for labeled plane trees and introduce the notion of improper edges. Our polynomials are multivariate generating polynomials of labeled plane trees and can be generated by a grammatical labeling based on a context-free grammar. Our proof of real stability uses a characterization of stable-preserving linear operators due to Borcea and Brändén. In particular, we get an alternative multivariate stable refinement of the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which is different from the one given by Haglund and Visontai.

Stembridge codes, permutahedral varieties, and their extensions
It is well known that the Eulerian polynomial is the Hilbert series of the cohomology of the permutahedral variety. Stanley obtained a formula showing that the cohomology carries a permutation representation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We answer a question of Stembridge on finding an explicit permutation basis of this cohomology. We observe that the Feichtner-Yuzvinsky basis for the Chow ring of the Boolean matroid is such a permutation basis, and then we construct an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant bijection between this basis and codes introduced by Stembridge, thereby giving a combinatorial proof of Stanley's formula. We obtain an analogous result for the stellahedral variety. We find a permutation basis of the permutation representation its cohomology carries. This involves the augmented Chow ring of a matroid introduced by Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. Along the way, we obtain a general result on augmented Chow rings (which was also independently obtained by Eur) asserting that augmented Chow rings of matroids are actually Chow rings in the sense of Feichtner and Yuzvinsky. In the last part of the paper, we study enumerative aspects of the permutahedra and the stellohedra related to these permutation bases.

Zig-zag Eulerian polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any finite partially ordered set $P$, the $P$-Eulerian polynomial is the generating function for the descent number over the set of linear extensions of $P$, and is closely related to the order polynomial of $P$ arising in the theory of $P$-partitions. Here we study the $P$-Eulerian polynomial where $P$ is a naturally labeled zig-zag poset; we call these zig-zag Eulerian polynomials. A result of Brändén implies that these polynomials are gamma-nonnegative, and hence their coefficients are symmetric and unimodal. The zig-zag Eulerian polynomials and the associated order polynomials have appeared fleetingly in the literature in a wide variety of contexts$\unicode{x2014}$e.g., in the study of polytopes, magic labelings of graphs, and Kekulé structures$\unicode{x2014}$but they do not appear to have been studied systematically. In this paper, we use a "relaxed" version of $P$-partitions to both survey and unify results. Our technique shows that the zig-zag Eulerian polynomials also capture the distribution of "big returns" over the set of (up-down) alternating permutations, as first observed by Coons and Sullivant. We develop recurrences for refined versions of the relevant generating functions, which evoke similarities to recurrences for the classical Eulerian polynomials. We conclude with a literature survey and open questions.

Dimensions of $τ$-tilting modules over path algebras and preprojective algebras of Dynkin type
Published in Journal of Algebra. Volume 667, 1 April 2025, Pages 365-411 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce a new generating function called $d$-polynomial for the dimensions of $τ$-tilting modules over a given finite dimensional algebra. Firstly, we study basic properties of $d$-polynomials and show that it can be realized as a certain sum of the $f$-polynomials of the simplicial complexes arising from $τ$-rigid pairs. Secondly, we give explicit formulas of $d$-polynomials for preprojective algebras and path algebras of Dynkin quivers by using a close relation with $W$-Eulerian polynomials and $W$-Narayana polynomials. Thirdly, we consider the ordinary and exponential generating functions defined from $d$-polynomials and give closed-form expressions in the case of preprojective algebras and path algebras of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}$.

On the joint distributions of succession and Eulerian statistics
The motivation of this paper is to investigate the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian statistics. We first investigate the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions over all permutations in the symmetric group. As an generalization a result of Diaconis-Evans-Graham (Adv. in Appl. Math., 61 (2014), 102-124), we show that two triple set-valued statistics of permutations are equidistributed on symmetric groups. We then introduce the definition of proper left-to-right minimum, and discover that the joint distribution of the succession and proper left-to-right minimum statistics over permutations is a symmetric distribution. In the final part, we discuss the relationship between the fix and cyc (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials and the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian-type statistics. In particular, we give a concise derivation of the generating function for a six-variable Eulerian polynomials.
On some discrete statistics of parking functions
Recall that $α=(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n)\in[n]^n$ is a parking function if its nondecreasing rearrangement $β=(b_1,b_2,\ldots,b_n)$ satisfies $b_i\leq i$ for all $1\leq i\leq n$. In this article, we study parking functions based on their ascents (indices at which $a_i<a_{i+1}$), descents (indices at which $a_i>a_{i+1}$), and ties (indices at which $a_i=a_{i+1}$). By utilizing multiset Eulerian polynomials, we give a generating function for the number of parking functions of length $n$ with $i$ descents. We present a recursive formula for the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at a specified subset of $[n-1]$. We establish that the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at $I\subset[n-1]$ and descents at $J=\{n-i:i\in I\}$ are equinumerous. As a special case, we show that the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at the first $k$ indices is given by $f(n, n-k-1)=\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{2n-k}{n-k-1}$. We prove this by bijecting to the set of standard Young tableaux of shape $((n-k)^2,1^k)$, which are enumerated by $f(n,n-k-1)$. We also study peaks of parking functions, which are indices at which $a_{i-1}<a_i>a_{i+1}$. We show that the set of parking functions with no peaks and no ties is enumerated by the Catalan numbers. We conclude our study by characterizing when a parking function is uniquely determined by their statistic encoding; a word indicating what indices in the parking function are ascents, descents, and ties. We provide open problems throughout.

Differential operators, grammars and Young tableaux
In algebraic combinatorics and formal calculation, context-free grammar is defined by a formal derivative based on a set of substitution rules. In this paper, we investigate this issue from three related viewpoints. Firstly, we introduce a differential operator method. As one of the applications, we deduce a new grammar for the Narayana polynomials. Secondly, we investigate the normal ordered grammars associated with the Eulerian polynomials. Thirdly, motivated by the theory of differential posets, we introduce a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and a kind of ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with the theory of context-free grammars, we provide a unified interpretations for the Ramanujan polynomials, André polynomials, left peak polynomials, interior peak polynomials, Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $B$, $1/2$-Eulerian polynomials, second-order Eulerian polynomials, and Narayana polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Along the same lines, we present an expansion of the powers of $c^kD$ in terms of standard Young tableaux, where $k$ is a positive integer. In particular, we provide four interpretations for the second-order Eulerian polynomials. All of the above apply to the theory of formal differential operator rings.

Non-overlapping descents and ascents in stack-sortable permutations
The Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$ give the distribution of descents over permutations. It is also known that the distribution of descents over stack-sortable permutations (i.e. permutations sortable by a certain algorithm whose internal storage is limited to a single stack data structure) is given by the Narayana numbers $\frac{1}{n}{n \choose k}{n \choose k+1}$. On the other hand, as a corollary of a much more general result, the distribution of the statistic ``maximum number of non-overlapping descents'', MND, over all permutations is given by $\sum_{n,k \geq 0}D_{n,k}x^k\ frac{t^n}{n!}=\frac{e^t}{1-x(1+(t-1)e^t)}$. In this paper, we show that the distribution of MND over stack-sortable permutations is given by $\frac{1}{n+1}{n+1\choose 2k+1}{n+k \choose k}$. We give two proofs of the result via bijections with rooted plane (binary) trees allowing us to control MND. Moreover, we show combinatorially that MND is equidistributed with the statistic MNA, the maximum number of non-overlapping ascents, over stack-sortable permutations. The last fact is obtained by establishing an involution on stack-sortable permutations that gives equidistribution of 8 statistics.

The $(α,β)$-Eulerian Polynomials and Descent-Stirling Statistics on Permutations
Carlitz and Scoville introduced the polynomials $A_n(x,y|α,β)$, which we refer to as the $(α, β)$-Eulerian polynomials. These polynomials count permutations based on Eulerian-Stirling statistics, including descents, ascents, left-to-right maxima, and right-to-left maxima. Carlitz and Scoville obtained the generating function of $A_n(x,y|α,β)$. In this paper, we introduce a new family of polynomials, $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$, defined on permutations, incorporating descent-Stirling statistics including valleys, exterior peaks, right double descents, left double ascents, left-to-right maxima, and right-to-left maxima. By employing the grammatical calculus introduced by Chen, we establish the connection between the generating function of $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$ and the generating function of the $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x,y|α,β)$ introduced by Carlitz and Scoville. Using this connection, we derive the generating function of $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$, which can be specialized to obtain the $(α,β)$-extensions of generating functions for peaks, left peaks, double ascents, right double ascents and left-right double ascents given by David-Barton, Elizalde and Noy, Entringer, Gessel, Kitaev and Zhuang. Moreover, we establish two relations between $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$ and $A_n(x,y|α,β)$, which enable us to derive $(α,β)$-extensions of results of Stembridge, Petersen, Brändén, and Zhuang. Specializing $(α,β)$-extensions of Stembridge's formula and the left peak version of Stembridge's formula allows us to derive the $(α,β)$-extensions of the tangent and secant numbers.

Caylerian polynomials
The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents. We initiate the study of descent polynomials over Cayley permutations, which we call Caylerian polynomials. Some classical results are generalized by linking Caylerian polynomials to Burge words and Burge matrices. The $γ$-nonegativity of the two-sided Eulerian polynomials is reformulated in terms of Burge structures. Finally, Cayley permutations with a prescribed ascent set are shown to be counted by Burge matrices with fixed row sums.

Eulerian Polynomials for Digraphs
Given an $n$-vertex digraph $D$ and a labeling $σ:V(D)\to [n]$, we say that an arc $u\to v$ of $D$ is a descent of $σ$ if $σ(u)>σ(v)$. Foata and Zeilberger introduced a generating function $A_D(t)$ for labelings of $D$ weighted by descents, which simultaneously generalizes both Eulerian polynomials and Mahonian polynomials. Motivated by work of Kalai, we look at problems related to $-1$ evaluations of $A_D(t)$. In particular, we give a combinatorial interpretation of $|A_D(-1)|$ in terms of "generalized alternating permutations" whenever the underlying graph of $D$ is bipartite.

On the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic and valley-hopping

This paper studies the relationship between the modified Foata$\unicode{x2013}$Strehl action (a.k.a. valley-hopping)$\unicode{x2014}$a group action on permutations used to demonstrate the $γ$-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials$\unicode{x2014}$and the number of rixed points $\operatorname{rix}$$\unicode{x2014}$a recursively-defined permutation statistic introduced by Lin in the context of an equidistribution problem. We give a linear-time iterative algorithm for computing the set of rixed points, and prove that the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic is homomesic under valley-hopping. We also demonstrate that a bijection $Φ$ introduced by Lin and Zeng in the study of the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic sends orbits of the valley-hopping action to orbits of a cyclic version of valley-hopping, which implies that the number of fixed points $\operatorname{fix}$ is homomesic under cyclic valley-hopping.
d-Fold Partition Diamonds
In this work we introduce new combinatorial objects called $d$--fold partition diamonds, which generalize both the classical partition function and the partition diamonds of Andrews, Paule and Riese, and we set $r_d(n)$ to be their counting function. We also consider the Schmidt type $d$--fold partition diamonds, which have counting function $s_d(n).$ Using partition analysis, we then find the generating function for both, and connect the generating functions $\sum_{n= 0}^\infty s_d(n)q^n$ to Eulerian polynomials. This allows us to develop elementary proofs of infinitely many Ramanujan--like congruences satisfied by $s_d(n)$ for various values of $d$, including the following family: for all $d\geq 1$ and all $n\geq 0,$ $s_d(2n+1) \equiv 0 \pmod{2^d}.$
The Primitive Eulerian polynomial
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 4.1 (2024), Paper No. 16 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Primitive Eulerian polynomial $P_{\cal A}(z)$ of a central hyperplane arrangement ${\cal A}$. It is a reparametrization of its cocharacteristic polynomial. Previous work of the first author implicitly show that, for simplicial arrangements, $P_{\cal A}(z)$ has nonnegative coefficients. For reflection arrangements of type A and B, the same work interprets the coefficients of $P_{\cal A}(z)$ using the (flag)excedance statistic on (signed) permutations. The main result of this article is to provide an interpretation of the coefficients of $P_{\cal A}(z)$ for all simplicial arrangements only using the geometry and combinatorics of ${\cal A}$. This new interpretation sheds more light to the case of reflection arrangements and, for the first time, gives combinatorial meaning to the coefficients of the Primitive Eulerian polynomial of the reflection arrangement of type D. In type B, we find a connection between the Primitive Eulerian polynomial and the $1/2$-Eulerian polynomial of Savage and Viswanathan (2012). We present some real-rootedness results and conjectures for $P_{\cal A}(z)$.

The sum of all width-one tensors
This paper generalizes a recent result by the authors concerning the sum of width-one matrices; in the present work, we consider width-one tensors of arbitrary dimensions. A tensor is said to have width 1 if, when visualized as an array, its nonzero entries lie along a path consisting of steps in the directions of the standard coordinate vectors. We prove two different formulas to compute the sum of all width-one tensors with fixed dimensions and fixed sum of (nonnegative integer) components. The first formula is obtained by converting width-one tensors into tuples of one-row semistandard Young tableaux; the second formula, which extracts coefficients from products of multiset Eulerian polynomials, is derived via Stanley-Reisner theory, making use of the EL-shelling of the order complex on the standard basis of tensors.

On the real-rootedness of the Eulerian transformation
Published in J. London Math. Soc. 111 (2025), Article ID e70083, 23p • View PublicationBIB
The Eulerian transformation is the linear operator on polynomials in one variable with real coefficients which maps the powers of this variable to the corresponding Eulerian polynomials. The derangement transformation is defined similarly. Brändén and Jochemko have conjectured that the Eulerian transforms of a class of polynomials with nonnegative coefficients, which includes those having all their roots in the interval $[-1,0]$, have only real zeros. This conjecture is proven in this paper. More general transformations are introduced in the combinatorial-geometric context of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes, where Eulerian and derangement transformations arise in the special case of barycentric subdivision, and are shown to have strong unimodality and gamma-positivity properties. General real-rootedness conjectures for these transformations, which unify various results and conjectures in the literature, are also proposed.

Systematic study of Schmidt-type partitions via weighted words
Let $S=(s_n)_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence with elements in a commutative monoid $(\mathcal{M},+,0)$. In this paper, we provide an explicit formula for $$\sum_{\la} C(\la) q^{\sum_{n\geq 1} \la_n\cdot s_n}$$ where $\la=(\la_1,\ldots)$ run through some subsets of over-partitions, and $C(\la)$ is a certain product of ``colors'' assigned to the parts of $\la$, and $q^s$ is a formal power of $q$ for $s\in M$. This formula allows us not only to retrieve several known Schmidt-type theorems but also to provide new Schmidt-type theorems for non-periodic sequences $S$. For example, when $(M,+,0)=(\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0},+,0)$, $s_n=1$ if there exists $i\geq 1$ such $n=\{i(i-1)/2+1\}$ and $s_n=0$ otherwise, we obtain the following statement: for all non-negative integer $m$, the number of partitions such that $\sum_{i\geq 1}\la_{i(i-1)/2+1} =m$ is equal to the number of plane partitions of $m$. Furthermore, we introduce a new family of partitions, the block partitions, generalizing the $k$-elongated partitions. From that family of partitions, we provide a generalization of a Schmidt-type theorem due to Andrews and Paule regarding $k$-elongated partitions and establish a link with the Eulerian polynomials.
