Integer point enumeration on independence polytopes and half-open hypersimplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate the Ehrhart Theory of the independence matroid polytope of uniform matroids. It is proved that these polytopes have an Ehrhart polynomial with positive coefficients. To do that, we prove that indeed all half-open-hypersimplices are Ehrhart positive, and tile disjointly our polytope using them.

Combinatorial Bernoulli Factories
Published in Bernoulli, 29(2), pp.1246-1274 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A Bernoulli factory is an algorithmic procedure for exact sampling of certain random variables having only Bernoulli access to their parameters. Bernoulli access to a parameter $p \in [0,1]$ means the algorithm does not know $p$, but has sample access to independent draws of a Bernoulli random variable with mean equal to $p$. In this paper, we study the problem of Bernoulli factories for polytopes: given Bernoulli access to a vector $x\in P$ for a given polytope $P\subset [0,1]^n$, output a randomized vertex such that the expected value of the $i$-th coordinate is \emph{exactly} equal to $x_i$. For example, for the special case of the perfect matching polytope, one is given Bernoulli access to the entries of a doubly stochastic matrix $[x_{ij}]$ and asked to sample a matching such that the probability of each edge $(i,j)$ be present in the matching is exactly equal to $x_{ij}$. We show that a polytope $P$ admits a Bernoulli factory if and and only if $P$ is the intersection of $[0,1]^n$ with an affine subspace. Our construction is based on an algebraic formulation of the problem, involving identifying a family of Bernstein polynomials (one per vertex) that satisfy a certain algebraic identity on $P$. The main technical tool behind our construction is a connection between these polynomials and the geometry of zonotope tilings. We apply these results to construct an explicit factory for the perfect matching polytope. The resulting factory is deeply connected to the combinatorial enumeration of arborescences and may be of independent interest. For the $k$-uniform matroid polytope, we recover a sampling procedure known in statistics as Sampford sampling.

Intersection of a partitional and a general infinite matroid
Let $ E $ be a possibly infinite set and let $ M $ and $ N $ be matroids defined on $ E $. We say that the pair $ \{ M,N \} $ has the Intersection property if $ M $ and $ N $ share an independent set $ I $ admitting a bipartition $ I_M\sqcup I_N $ such that $ \mathsf{span}_M(I_M)\cup \mathsf{span}_N(I_N)=E $. The Matroid Intersection Conjecture of Nash-Williams says that every matroid pair has the Intersection property. The conjecture is known and easy to prove in the case when one of the matroids is uniform and it was shown by Bowler and Carmesin that the conjecture is implied by its special case where one of the matroids is a direct sum of uniform matroids, i.e., is a partitional matroid. We show that if $ M $ is an arbitrary matroid and $ N $ is the direct sum of finitely many uniform matroids, then $ \{ M, N \} $ has the Intersection property.

The inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 151, November 2021, Pages 375-392 • View PublicationBIB
In analogy with the classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for Coxeter groups, Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield introduced the concept of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for matroids. It is known that both the classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials can be considered as special cases of the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials for locally finite posets. In the framework of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials, we study the inverse of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley functions and define the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for matroids. We also compute these polynomials for boolean matroids and uniform matroids. As an unexpected application of the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, we obtain a new formula to compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for uniform matroids. Similar to the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid, we conjecture that the coefficients of its inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial are nonnegative and log-concave.

A Combinatorial Formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials of Sparse Paving Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the positivity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for sparse paving matroids, which are known to be logarithmically almost all matroids, but are conjectured to be almost all matroids. The positivity follows from a remarkably simple combinatorial formula we discovered for these polynomials using skew young tableaux. This supports the conjecture that Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for all matroids have non-negative coeffiecients. In special cases, such as uniform matroids, our formula has a nice combinatorial interpretation.
Maximizing Determinants under Matroid Constraints

Given vectors $v_1,\dots,v_n\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and a matroid $M=([n],I)$, we study the problem of finding a basis $S$ of $M$ such that $\det(\sum_{i \in S}v_i v_i^\top)$ is maximized. This problem appears in a diverse set of areas such as experimental design, fair allocation of goods, network design, and machine learning. The current best results include an $e^{2k}$-estimation for any matroid of rank $k$ and a $(1+ε)^d$-approximation for a uniform matroid of rank $k\ge d+\frac dε$, where the rank $k\ge d$ denotes the desired size of the optimal set. Our main result is a new approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends only on the dimension $d$ of the vectors and not on the size $k$ of the output set. In particular, we show an $(O(d))^{d}$-estimation and an $(O(d))^{d^3}$-approximation for any matroid, giving a significant improvement over prior work when $k\gg d$. Our result relies on the existence of an optimal solution to a convex programming relaxation for the problem which has sparse support; in particular, no more than $O(d^2)$ variables of the solution have fractional values. The sparsity results rely on the interplay between the first-order optimality conditions for the convex program and matroid theory. We believe that the techniques introduced to show sparsity of optimal solutions to convex programs will be of independent interest. We also give a randomized algorithm that rounds a sparse fractional solution to a feasible integral solution to the original problem. To show the approximation guarantee, we utilize recent works on strongly log-concave polynomials and show new relationships between different convex programs studied for the problem. Finally, we use the estimation algorithm and sparsity results to give an efficient deterministic approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends solely on the dimension $d$.
Obstructions for bounded branch-depth in matroids
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2021:4, 25pp • View PublicationBIB
DeVos, Kwon, and Oum introduced the concept of branch-depth of matroids as a natural analogue of tree-depth of graphs. They conjectured that a matroid of sufficiently large branch-depth contains the uniform matroid $U_{n,2n}$ or the cycle matroid of a large fan graph as a minor. We prove that matroids with sufficiently large branch-depth either contain the cycle matroid of a large fan graph as a minor or have large branch-width. As a corollary, we prove their conjecture for matroids representable over a fixed finite field and quasi-graphic matroids, where the uniform matroid is not an option.

On the Ehrhart Polynomial of Minimal Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of the connected matroid of size $n$ and rank $k$ with the least number of bases, also known as a minimal matroid. We prove that their polytopes are Ehrhart positive and $h^*$-real-rooted (and hence unimodal). We prove that the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation relates minimal matroids and matroid polytopes subdivisions, and also preserves Ehrhart positivity. We state two conjectures: that indeed all matroids are $h^*$-real-rooted, and that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid of fixed rank and cardinality are bounded by those of the corresponding minimal matroid and the corresponding uniform matroid.

Partition and Cohen-Macaulay Extenders
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a pure simplicial complex is partitionable, then its $h$-vector has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of any partitioning of the complex. Given a non-partitionable complex $Δ$, we construct a complex $Γ\supseteq Δ$ of the same dimension such that both $Γ$ and the relative complex $(Γ,Δ)$ are partitionable. This allows us to rewrite the $h$-vector of any pure simplicial complex as the difference of two $h$-vectors of partitionable complexes, giving an analogous interpretation of the $h$-vector of a non-partitionable complex. By contrast, for a given complex $Δ$ it is not always possible to find a complex $Γ$ such that both $Γ$ and $(Γ,Δ)$ are Cohen-Macaulay. We characterize when this is possible, and we show that the construction of such a $Γ$ in this case is remarkably straightforward. We end with a note on a similar notion for shellability and a connection to Simon's conjecture on extendable shellability for uniform matroids.

Hypersimplices are Ehrhart Positive
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Ehrhart polynomial of hypersimplices. It is proved that these polynomials have positive coefficients and we give a combinatorial formula for each of them. This settles a problem posed by Stanley and also proves that uniform matroids are Ehrhart positive, an important and yet unsolved particular case of a conjecture posed by De Loera et al. To this end, we introduce a new family of numbers that we call weighted Lah numbers and study some of their properties.

A Combinatorial Formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials of $ρ$-Removed Uniform Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $ρ$ be a non-negative integer. A $ρ$-removed uniform matroid is a matroid obtained from a uniform matroid by removing a collection of $ρ$ disjoint bases. We present a combinatorial formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $ρ$-removed uniform matroids, using skew Young Tableaux. Even for uniform matroids, our formula is new, gives manifestly positive integer coefficients, and is more manageable than known formulas.

Combinatorics of the geometry of Wilson loop diagrams I: equivalence classes via matroids and polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Wilson loop diagrams are an important tool in studying scattering amplitudes of SYM $N=4$ theory and are known by previous work to be associated to positroids. We characterize the conditions under which two Wilson loop diagrams give the same positroid, prove that an important subclass of subdiagrams (exact subdiagrams) correspond to uniform matroids, and enumerate the number of different Wilson loop diagrams that correspond to each positroid cell. We also give a correspondence between those positroids which can arise from Wilson loop diagrams and directions in associahedra.

Tropical ideals do not realise all Bergman fans
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have weight one.

Equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids
The equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Gedeon, Proudfoot, and Young. Gedeon conjectured an explicit formula for the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids with an action of symmetric groups. In this paper, we discover a new formula for these polynomials which is related to the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids. Based on our new formula, we confirm Gedeon's conjecture by the Pieri rule.

The monoid of monotone functions on a poset and quasi-arithmetic multiplicities for uniform matroids
We describe the structure of the monoid of natural-valued monotone functions on an arbitrary poset. For this monoid we provide a presentation, a characterization of prime elements, and a description of its convex hull. We also study the associated monoid ring, proving that it is normal, and thus Cohen-Macaulay. We determine its Cohen-Macaulay type, characterize the Gorenstein property, and provide a Gröbner basis of the defining ideal. Then we apply these results to the monoid of quasi-arithmetic multiplicities on a uniform matroid. Finally we state some conjectures on the number of irreducibles for the monoid of multiplicities on an arbitrary matroid.
Matroid-minor Hopf algebra: a cancellation-free antipode formula and other applications of sign-reversing involutions
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula for the matroid-minor Hopf algebra. We then explore applications of this formula. For example, the cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions. We also prove that all matroids over any hyperfield (in the sense of Baker and Bowler) have cancellation-free antipode formulas; furthermore, the cancellations in the antipode are independent of the hyperfield structure and only depend on the underlying matroid.

A two-dimensional topological representation theorem for matroid polytopes of rank 4
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 86 (2020) 103065 • View PublicationBIB
The Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem, which states that every (loop-free) oriented matroid of rank $r$ can be represented as a pseudosphere arrangement on the $(r-1)$-dimensional sphere $S^{r-1}$, is one of the most outstanding results in oriented matroid theory. In this paper, we provide a lower-dimensional version of the topological representation theorem for uniform matroid polytopes of rank $4$. We introduce $2$-weak configurations of points and pseudocircles ($2$-weak PPC configurations) on $S^2$ and prove that every uniform matroid polytope of rank $4$ can be represented by a $2$-weak PPC configuration. As an application, we provide a proof of Las Vergnas conjecture on simplicial topes for the case of uniform matroid polytopes of rank $4$.

Equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce $q$-analogues of uniform matroids, which we call $q$-niform matroids. While uniform matroids admit actions of symmetric groups, $q$-niform matroids admit actions of finite general linear groups. We show that the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a $q$-niform matroid is the unipotent $q$-analogue of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the corresponding uniform matroid, thus providing evidence for the positivity conjecture for equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.
The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Elias, Proudfoot, and Wakefield [{\it Adv. Math. 2016}]. Let $U_{m,d}$ denote the uniform matroid of rank $d$ on a set of $m+d$ elements. Gedeon, Proudfoot, and Young [{\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2017}] pointed out that they can derive an explicit formula of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $U_{m,d}$ using equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In this paper we give two alternative explicit formulas, which allow us to prove the real-rootedness of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $U_{m,d}$ for $2\leq m\leq 15$ and all $d$'s. The case $m=1$ was previously proved by Gedeon, Proudfoot, and Young [{\it Sém. Lothar. Combin. 2017}]. We further determine the $Z$-polynomials of all $U_{m,d}$'s and prove the real-rootedness of the $Z$-polynomials of $U_{m,d}$ for $2\leq m\leq 15$ and all $d$'s. Our formula also enables us to give an alternative proof of Gedeon, Proudfoot, and Young's formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $U_{m,d}$'s without using the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Chow Rings of Vector Space Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Chow ring of a matroid (or more generally, atomic latice) is an invariant whose importance was demonstrated by Adiprasito, Huh and Katz, who used it to resolve the long-standing Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture. Here, we make a detailed study of the Chow rings of uniform matroids and of matroids of finite vector spaces. In particular, we express the Hilbert series of such matroids in terms of permutation statistics; in the full rank case, our formula yields the maj-exc $q$-Eulerian polynomials of Shareshian and Wachs. We also provide a formula for the Charney-Davis quantities of such matroids, which can be expressed in terms of either determinants or $q$-secant numbers.
