An improved algorithm for recognizing matroids
Let $M$ be a matroid defined on a finite set $E$ and $L\subset E$. $L$ is locked in $M$ if $M|L$ and $M^*|(E\backslash L)$ are 2-connected, and $min\{r(L), r^*(E\backslash L)\} \geq 2$. Locked subsets characterize nontrivial facets of the bases polytope. In this paper, we give a new axiom system for matroids based on locked subsets. We deduce an algorithm for recognizing matroids improving the running time complexity of the best known till today. This algorithm induces a polynomial time algorithm for recognizing uniform matroids. This latter problem is intractable if we use an independence oracle.

In this paper, we give a new axioms system based on nonseparable flats with their ranks to define a matroid. We deduce a polynomial time algorithm for deciding if a given matroid (respectively, arbitrary structure) is an uniform matroid. This problem is intractable if we use an independence or an equivalent oracle.
A cancellation-free antipode formula (for uniform matroids) for the restriction-contraction matroid Hopf algebra
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula (for uniform matroids) for the restriction-contraction matroid Hopf algebra, using the technique of splitting and merging via a sign-reversing involution. The cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions.

We present exponential and super factorial lower bounds on the number of Hamiltonian cycles passing through any edge of the basis graphs of a graphic, generalized Catalan and uniform matroids. All lower bounds were obtained by a common general strategy based on counting appropriated cycles of length four in the corresponding matroid basis graph.
On the Maximum-Weight Basis Problem
Let M to be a matroid defined on a finite set E. A subset L of E is locked in M if L is 2-connected in M, the complement of L is 2-connected in the dual M*, and min{r(L), r*(complement of L)} is greater than 1. In this paper, we prove that the nontrivial facets of the bases polytope of M are described by the locked subsets. We deduce that finding the maximum-weight basis of M is a polynomial problem for matroids with a polynomial number of locked subsets. This class of matroids is closed under 2-sums and contains uniform matroids.

We define the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid equipped with a group of symmetries, generalizing the nonequivariant case. We compute this invariant for arbitrary uniform matroids and for braid matroids of small rank.

We present a version of the weighted cellular matrix-tree theorem that is suitable for calculating explicit generating functions for spanning trees of highly structured families of simplicial and cell complexes. We apply the result to give weighted generalizations of the tree enumeration formulas of Adin for complete colorful complexes, and of Duval, Klivans and Martin for skeleta of hypercubes. We investigate the latter further via a logarithmic generating function for weighted tree enumeration, and derive another tree-counting formula using the unsigned Euler characteristics of skeleta of a hypercube and the Crapo $β$-invariant of uniform matroids.
The Waldschmidt constant for squarefree monomial ideals

Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I \subseteq R =k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, we show that $\widehatα(I)$, the Waldschmidt constant of $I$, can be expressed as the optimal solution to a linear program constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. By applying results from fractional graph theory, we can then express $\widehatα(I)$ in terms of the fractional chromatic number of a hypergraph also constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. Moreover, expressing $\widehatα(I)$ as the solution to a linear program enables us to prove a Chudnovsky-like lower bound on $\widehatα(I)$, thus verifying a conjecture of Cooper-Embree-Hà-Hoefel for monomial ideals in the squarefree case. As an application, we compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence for some families of squarefree monomial ideals. For example, we determine both constants for unions of general linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^n$ with few components compared to $n$, and we find the Waldschmidt constant for the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a uniform matroid.

We compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the uniform matroid of rank n-1 on n elements by proving that the i-th coefficient of is equal to the number of ways to choose i non-intersecting chords in an (n-i+1)-gon. We also show that the corresponding intersection cohomology group is isomorphic to the irreducible representation of the symmetric group associated to the partition [n-2i,2,...,2].
How many circuits determine an oriented matroid?

Las Vergnas and Hamidoune studied the number of circuits needed to determine an oriented matroid. In this paper we investigate this problem and some new variants, as well as their interpretation in particular classes of matroids. We present general upper and lower bounds in the setting of general connected orientable matroids, leading to the study of subgraphs of the base graph and the intersection graph of circuits.
We then consider the problem for uniform matroids which is closely related to the notion of (connected) covering numbers in Design Theory. Finally, we also devote special attention to regular matroids as well as some graphic and cographic matroids leading in particular to the topics of (connected) bond and cycle covers in Graph Theory.
Weakly Submodular Functions
Submodular functions are well-studied in combinatorial optimization, game theory and economics. The natural diminishing returns property makes them suitable for many applications. We study an extension of monotone submodular functions, which we call {\em weakly submodular functions}. Our extension includes some (mildly) supermodular functions. We show that several natural functions belong to this class and relate our class to some other recent submodular function extensions.
We consider the optimization problem of maximizing a weakly submodular function subject to uniform and general matroid constraints. For a uniform matroid constraint, the "standard greedy algorithm" achieves a constant approximation ratio where the constant (experimentally) converges to 5.95 as the cardinality constraint increases. For a general matroid constraint, a simple local search algorithm achieves a constant approximation ratio where the constant (analytically) converges to 10.22 as the rank of the matroid increases.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $c$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $r^c$ rank-$a$ sets, or $\mathcal{M}$ contains the GF$(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$ and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $cq^r$ rank-$a$ sets. In the latter case, this determines the maximum density of matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ up to a constant factor.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\cM$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $n$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$ can be covered by at most $r^n$ sets of rank at most $a$, or $\cM$ contains the $\GF(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$, and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$ can be covered by at most $r^nq^r$ sets of rank at most $a$. This determines the maximum density of the matroids in $\cM$ up to a polynomial factor.
Volumes and Tangent Cones of Matroid Polytopes
De Loera et al. 2009, showed that when the rank is fixed the Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid polytope can be computed in polynomial time when the number of elements varies. A key to proving this is the fact that the number of simplicial cones in any triangulation of a tangent cone is bounded polynomially in the number of elements when the rank is fixed. The authors speculated whether or not the Ehrhart polynomial could be computed in polynomial time in terms of the number of bases, where the number of elements and rank are allowed to vary. We show here that for the uniform matroid of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, the number of simplicial cones in any triangulation of a tangent cone is $n-2 \choose r-1$. Therefore, if the rank is allowed to vary, the number of simplicial cones grows exponentially in $n$. Thus, it is unlikely that a Brion-Lawrence type of approach, such as Barvinok's Algorithm, can compute the Ehrhart polynomial efficiently when the rank varies with the number of elements. To prove this result, we provide a triangulation in which the maximal simplicies are in bijection with the spanning thrackles of the complete bipartite graph $K_{r,n-r}$.
Negatively correlated random variables and Mason's conjecture

Mason's Conjecture asserts that for an $m$--element rank $r$ matroid $\M$ the sequence $(I_k/\binom{m}{k}: 0\leq k\leq r)$ is logarithmically concave, in which $I_k$ is the number of independent $k$--sets of $\M$. A related conjecture in probability theory implies these inequalities provided that the set of independent sets of $\M$ satisfies a strong negative correlation property we call the \emph{Rayleigh condition}. This condition is known to hold for the set of bases of a regular matroid. We show that if $ω$ is a weight function on a set system $\Q$ that satisfies the Rayleigh condition then $\Q$ is a convex delta--matroid and $ω$ is logarithmically submodular. Thus, the hypothesis of the probabilistic conjecture leads inevitably to matroid theory. We also show that two--sums of matroids preserve the Rayleigh condition in four distinct senses, and hence that the Potts model of an iterated two--sum of uniform matroids satisfies the Rayleigh condition. Numerous conjectures and auxiliary results are included.
