The combinatorics behind the leading Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of braid matroids
Ferroni and Larson gave a combinatorial interpretation of the braid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in terms of series-parallel matroids. As a consequence, they confirmed an explicit formula for the leading Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of braid matroids with odd rank, as conjectured by Elias, Proudfoot, and Wakefield. Based on Ferroni and Larson's work, we further explore the combinatorics behind the leading Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of braid matroids. The main results of this paper include an explicit formula for the leading Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of braid matroids with even rank, a simple expression for the number of simple series-parallel matroids of rank k + 1 on 2k elements, and explicit formulas for the leading coefficients of inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids. The binomial identity for the Abel polynomials plays an important role in the proofs of these formulas.
Affine extended weak order is a lattice
Coxeter groups are equipped with a partial order known as the weak order, such that $u \leq v$ if the inversions of $u$ are a subset of the inversions of $v$. In finite Coxeter groups, weak order is a complete lattice, but in infinite Coxeter groups it is only a meet semi-lattice. Motivated by questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, Matthew Dyer introduced a larger poset, now known as extended weak order, which contains the weak order as an order ideal and coincides with it for finite Coxeter groups. The extended weak order is the containment order on certain sets of positive roots: those which satisfy a geometric condition making them "biclosed". The finite biclosed sets are precisely the inversion sets of Coxeter group elements. Generalizing the result for finite Coxeter groups, Dyer conjectured that the extended weak order is always a complete lattice, even for infinite Coxeter groups.
In this paper, we prove Dyer's conjecture for Coxeter groups of affine type. To do so, we introduce the notion of a clean arrangement, which is a hyperplane arrangement where the regions are in bijection with biclosed sets. We show that root poset order ideals in a finite or rank 3 untwisted affine root system are clean. We set up a general framework for reducing Dyer's conjecture to checking cleanliness of certain subarrangements. We conjecture this framework can be used to prove Dyer's conjecture for all Coxeter groups.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for $321$-avoiding Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties
We prove the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of 321-avoiding Kazhdan--Lusztig varieties can be computed combinatorially in terms of $K$-theoretic skew excited Young diagrams. We present an algorithm which gives a lower bound for this regularity and describe a setting in which this algorithm provides precise regularity computations. This algorithm specializes to compute the regularity of all two-sided mixed ladder determinantal varieties.
Induced log-concavity of equivariant matroid invariants
Inspired by the notion of equivariant log-concavity, we introduce the concept of induced log-concavity for a sequence of representations of a finite group. For an equivariant matroid equipped with a symmetric group action or a finite general linear group action, we transform the problem of proving the induced log-concavity of matroid invariants to that of proving the Schur positivity of symmetric functions. We prove the induced log-concavity of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids equipped with the action of a finite general linear group, as well as that of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids equipped with the action of a symmetric group.
As a consequence of the former, we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids, thus providing further positive evidence for Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield's log-concavity conjecture on the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. From the latter we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids, which was recently proved by Xie and Zhang by using a computer algebra approach. We also establish the induced log-concavity of the equivariant characteristic polynomials and the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for $q$-niform matroids and uniform matroids.
Chain Tutte polynomials
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.

Given an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a nonnegative integer $m$, the $m$-Shi arrangement of $(W,S)$ is a subarrangement of the Coxeter hyperplane arrangement of $(W,S)$. The classical Shi arrangement ($m=0$) was introduced in the case of affine Weyl groups by Shi to study Kazhdan-Lusztig cells for $W$. As two key results, Shi showed that each region of the Shi arrangement contains exactly one element of minimal length in $W$ and that the union of their inverses form a convex subset of the Coxeter complex. The set of $m$-low elements in $W$ were introduced to study the word problem of the corresponding Artin-Tits (braid) group and they turn out to produce automata to study the combinatorics of reduced words in $W$.
In this article, we generalize and extend Shi's results to any Coxeter system for any $m$: (1) the set of minimal length elements of the regions in a $m$-Shi arrangement is precisely the set of $m$-low elements, settling a conjecture of the first and third authors in this case; (2) the union of the inverses of the ($0$-)low elements form a convex subset in the Coxeter complex, settling a conjecture by the third author, Nadeau and Williams.

We adapt the hypercube decompositions introduced by Blundell-Buesing-Davies-Veličković-Williamson to prove the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture for Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomials in the case of elementary intervals in $S_n$. This significantly generalizes the main previously-known case of the conjecture, that of lower intervals.

For $w$ in the symmetric group, we provide an exact formula for the smallest positive power $q^{h(w)}$ appearing in the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial $P_{e,w}(q)$. We also provide a tight upper bound on $h(w)$ in simply-laced types, resolving a conjecture of Billey-Postnikov from 2002.
Parabolic recursions for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the hypercube decomposition
We employ general parabolic recursion methods to demonstrate the recently devised hypercube formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $S_n$, and establish its generalization to the full setting of a finite Coxeter system through algebraic proof. We introduce procedures for positive decompositions of $q$-derived Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials within this setting, that utilize classical Hecke algebra positivity phenomena of Dyer-Lehrer and Grojnowski-Haiman. This leads to a distinct algorithmic approach to the subject, based on induction from a parabolic subgroup. We propose suitable weak variants of the combinatorial invariance conjecture and verify their validity for permutation groups.

We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of the matroid arising from the braid arrangement of type $\mathrm{A}_{n-1}$, which gives an interpretation of the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of the reciprocal plane of the braid arrangement. Moreover, we prove an equivariant version of this result. The key combinatorial object is a class of matroids arising from series-parallel networks. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Elias, Proudfoot, and Wakefield on the top coefficient of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids, and we provide explicit generating functions for their Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials.

We study the Hilbert series of four objects arising in the Chow-theoretic and Kazhdan-Lusztig framework of matroids. These are, respectively, the Hilbert series of the Chow ring, the augmented Chow ring, the intersection cohomology module, and its stalk at the empty flat. We develop a parallelism between the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its Chow ring. This extends to a parallelism between the $Z$-polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its augmented Chow ring. This suggests to bring ideas from one framework to the other. Our two main motivations are the real-rootedness conjecture for all of these polynomials, and the problem of computing them. We provide several intrinsic definitions of these invariants; also, by leveraging that they are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions, we deduce a fast way for computing them for a large class of matroids. Uniform matroids are a case of combinatorial interest; we link the resulting polynomials with certain real-rooted families such as the (binomial) Eulerian polynomials, and we settle a conjecture of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson. Furthermore, we prove the real-rootedness of the Hilbert series of the augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids via a result of Haglund and Zhang; and in addition, we prove a version of a conjecture of Gedeon in the Chow setting: uniform matroids maximize coefficient-wisely these polynomials for matroids with fixed rank and size. By relying on the nonnegativity of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the semi-small decompositions of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang, we strengthen the unimodality of the Hilbert series of Chow rings, augmented Chow rings, and intersection cohomologies to $γ$-positivity, a property for palindromic polynomials that lies between unimodality and real-rootedness; this settles a conjecture of Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi.

Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements, also known as matroid Schubert varieties, play an essential role in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture and in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory for matroids. We study these varieties as equivariant compactifications of affine spaces, and give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize them. We also generalize the theory to include partial compactifications and morphisms between them. Our results resemble the correspondence between toric varieties and polyhedral fans.

We revisit Haiman's conjecture on the relations between characters of Kazdhan-Lusztig basis elements of the Hecke algebra over the symmetric group. The conjecture asserts that, for purposes of character evaluation, any Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element is reducible to a sum of the simplest possible ones (those associated to so-called codominant permutations). When the basis element is associated to a smooth permutation, we are able to give a geometric proof of this conjecture. On the other hand, if the permutation is singular, we provide a counterexample.

To any element of a connected, simply connected, semisimple complex algebraic group G and a choice of an element of the corresponding Weyl group there is an associated Lusztig variety. When the element of G is regular semisimple, the corresponding variety carries an action of the Weyl group on its (equivariant) intersection cohomology. From this action, we recover the induced characters of an element of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In type A, we prove a more precise statement: that the Frobenius character of this action is precisely the symmetric function given by the characters of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. The main idea is to find celular decompositions of desingularizations of these varieties and apply the Brosnan-Chow palindromicity criterion for determining when the local invariant cycle map is an isomorphism.
This recovers some results of Lusztig about character sheaves and gives a generalization of the Brosnan-Chow solution to the Sharesian-Wachs conjecture to non-codominant permutations, where singularities are involved. We also review the connections between Immanants, Hecke algebras, and Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of indifference graphs.

We study the way in which equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, and equivariant Z-polynomials of matroids change under the operation of relaxation of a collection of stressed hyperplanes. This allows us to compute these polynomials for arbitrary paving matroids, which we do in a number of examples, including various matroids associated with Steiner systems that admit actions of Mathieu groups.

We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier.
We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, including those coming from open patches of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. This provides a correction to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri (2015).

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$. Its Weyl group is the symmetric group $S_n$. In this paper, we want to describe some Kazhdan-Lusztig right cells containing smooth elements which parameterize the smooth Schubert varieties. These elements are closely related to the study of associated varieties of highest weight modules of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$. Firstly, we give a complete classification of the KL right cells containing only smooth elements. Then we give a sufficient condition for a KL right cell to contain only non-smooth elements by using invariant subsequences and a sufficient condition for a KL right cell to contain some smooth elements. Finally, we give an efficient algorithm to find out all the smooth elements in a given KL right cell.

Given an affine Coxeter group $W$, the corresponding Shi arrangement is a refinement of the corresponding Coxeter hyperplane arrangements that was introduced by Shi to study Kazhdan-Lusztig cells for $W$. In particular, Shi showed that each region of the Shi arrangement contains exactly one element of minimal length in $W$. Low elements in $W$ were introduced to study the word problem of the corresponding Artin-Tits (braid) group and turns out to produce automata to study the combinatorics of reduced words in $W$.
In this article, we show in the case of an affine Coxeter group that the set of minimal length elements of the regions in the Shi arrangement is precisely the set of low elements, settling a conjecture of Dyer and the second author in this case. As a byproduct of our proof, we show that the descent-walls -- the walls that separate a region from the fundamental alcove -- of any region in the Shi arrangement are precisely the descent walls of the alcove of its corresponding low element.

In a classical-type flag variety, we consider a Schubert variety associated to a vexillary (signed) permutation, and establish a combinatorial formula for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of a point on such a Schubert variety. The formula is expressed in terms of excited Young diagrams, and extends results for Grassmannians due to Krattenthaler, Lakshmibai-Raghavan-Sankaran, and for the maximal isotropic (symplectic and orthogonal) Grassmannians to Ghorpade-Raghavan, Raghavan-Upadhyay, Kreiman, and Ikeda-Naruse. We also provide a new proof of a theorem of Li-Yong in the type A vexillary case. The main ingredient is an isomorphism between certain neighborhoods of fixed points, known as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, which, in turn, relies on a direct sum embedding previously used by Anderson-Fulton to relate vexillary loci to Grassmannian loci.

We establish combinatorial and inductive formulas for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials associated to covexillary elements in classical types, extending results of Boe, Lascoux-Schützenberger, Sankaran-Vanchinathan, and Zelevinsky for Grassmannians of classical types. The proof uses intersection cohomology theory and the isomorphism of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties from Anderson-Ikeda-Jeon-Kawago.
