Tropical Invariants for Permutation Group Actions
We consider the action of a permutation group $G$ of order $k$ on the tropical polynomial semiring in $n$ variables. We prove that the sub-semiring of invariant polynomials is finitely generated if and only if $G$ is generated by $2$-cycles. There do exist finitely many separating invariants of degree at most $\max\{n,{n\choose 2}\}$. Separating tropical invariants can be used to construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings of the orbit space ${\mathbb R}^n/G$ into Euclidean space. We also show that the invariant polynomials of degree $\leq n p_1p_2\cdots p_k$ generate the semifield of invariant rational tropical functions, where $p_1,p_2,\dots,p_k$ are the first $k$ prime numbers. Most results are also true over arbitrary semirings that are additively idempotent and multiplicatively cancellative.
Boosting uniformity in quasirandom groups: fast and simple
We study the communication complexity of multiplying $k\times t$ elements from the group $H=\text{SL}(2,q)$ in the number-on-forehead model with $k$ parties. We prove a lower bound of $(t\log H)/c^{k}$. This is an exponential improvement over previous work, and matches the state-of-the-art in the area.
Relatedly, we show that the convolution of $k^{c}$ independent copies of a 3-uniform distribution over $H^{m}$ is close to a $k$-uniform distribution. This is again an exponential improvement over previous work which needed $c^{k}$ copies. The proofs are remarkably simple; the results extend to other quasirandom groups.
We also show that for any group $H$, any distribution over $H^{m}$ whose weight-$k$ Fourier coefficients are small is close to a $k$-uniform distribution. This generalizes previous work in the abelian setting, and the proof is simpler.
Quasirandom groups enjoy interleaved mixing
Let $G$ be a group such that any non-trivial representation has dimension at least $d$. Let $X=(X_{1},X_{2},\ldots,X_{t})$ and $Y=(Y_{1},Y_{2},\ldots,Y_{t})$ be distributions over $G^{t}$. Suppose that $X$ is independent from $Y$. We show that for any $g\in G$ we have $|\mathbb{P}[X_{1}Y_{1}X_{2}Y_{2}\cdots X_{t}Y_{t}=g]-1/|G||\le\frac{|G|^{2t-1}}{d^{t-1}}\sqrt{\mathbb{E}_{h\in G^{t}}X(h)^{2}}\sqrt{\mathbb{E}_{h\in G^{t}}Y(h)^{2}}.$ Our results generalize, improve, and simplify previous works.
Polystability in positive characteristic and degree lower bounds for invariant rings

We develop a representation theoretic technique for detecting closed orbits that is applicable in all characteristics. Our technique is based on Kempf's theory of optimal subgroups and we make some improvements and simplify the theory from a computational perspective. We exhibit our technique in many examples and in particular, give an algorithm to decide if a symmetric polynomial in $n$-variables has a closed ${\rm SL}_n$ orbit.
As an important application, we prove exponential lower bounds on the maximal degree of a system of generators of invariant rings for two actions that are important from the perspective of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT). The first is the action of ${\rm SL}(V)$ on ${\rm Sym}^3(V)^{\oplus 3}$, the space of 3-tuples of cubic forms, and the second is the action of ${\rm SL}(V) \times {\rm SL}(W) \times {\rm SL}(Z)$ on the tensor space $(V \otimes W \otimes Z)^{\oplus 5}$. In both these cases, we prove an exponential lower degree bound for a system of invariants that generate the invariant ring or that define the null cone.

We develop algebraic methods for computations with tensor data. We give 3 applications: extracting features that are invariant under the orthogonal symmetries in each of the modes, approximation of the tensor spectral norm, and amplification of low rank tensor structure. We introduce colored Brauer diagrams, which are used for algebraic computations and in analyzing their computational complexity. We present numerical experiments whose results show that the performance of the alternating least square algorithm for the low rank approximation of tensors can be improved using tensor amplification.

We introduce the $G$-stable rank of a higher order tensors over perfect fields.
The $G$-stable rank is related to the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for stability in Geometric Invariant Theory. We will relate the $G$-stable rank to the tensor rank and slice rank. For numerical applications, we express the $G$-stable rank as a solution to an optimization problem. Over the field ${\mathbb F}_3$ we discuss an application to the Cap Set Problem.
The regularity lemma is false over small fields
The regularity lemma is a stringent condition of the possible ranks of tensor blow-ups of linear subspaces of matrices. It was proved by Ivanyos, Qiao and Subrahmanyam when the underlying field is sufficiently large. We show that if the field size is too small, the regularity lemma is false.
The Graph Isomorphism Problem and approximate categories

It is unknown whether two graphs can be tested for isomorphism in polynomial time. A classical approach to the Graph Isomorphism Problem is the d-dimensional Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm. The d-dimensional WL-algorithm can distinguish many pairs of graphs, but the pairs of non-isomorphic graphs constructed by Cai, Furer and Immerman it cannot distinguish. If d is fixed, then the WL-algorithm runs in polynomial time. We will formulate the Graph Isomorphism Problem as an Orbit Problem: Given a representation V of an algebraic group G and two elements v_1,v_2 in V, decide whether v_1 and v_2 lie in the same G-orbit. Then we attack the Orbit Problem by constructing certain approximate categories C_d(V), d=1,2,3,... whose objects include the elements of V. We show that v_1 and v_2 are not in the same orbit by showing that they are not isomorphic in the category C_d(V) for some d. For every d this gives us an algorithm for isomorphism testing. We will show that the WL-algorithms reduce to our algorithms, but that our algorithms cannot be reduced to the WL-algorithms. Unlike the Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm, our algorithm can distinguish the Cai-Furer-Immerman graphs in polynomial time.

Many important invariants for matroids and polymatroids, such as the Tutte polynomial, the Billera-Jia-Reiner quasi-symmetric function, and the invariant $\mathcal G$ introduced by the first author, are valuative. In this paper we construct the $\Z$-modules of all $\Z$-valued valuative functions for labeled matroids and polymatroids on a fixed ground set, and their unlabeled counterparts, the $\Z$-modules of valuative invariants. We give explicit bases for these modules and for their dual modules generated by indicator functions of polytopes, and explicit formulas for their ranks. Our results confirm a conjecture of the first author that $\mathcal G$ is universal for valuative invariants.

To a directed graph without loops and 2-cycles, we can associate a skew-symmetric matrix with integer entries. Mutations of such skew-symmetric matrices, and more generally skew-symmetrizable matrices, have been defined in the context of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky. The mutation class of a graph G is the set of all isomorphism classes of graphs that can be obtained from G by a sequence of mutations. A graph is called mutation-finite if its mutation class is finite. Fomin, Shapiro and Thurston constructed mutation-finite graphs from triangulations of oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. We will call such graphs "of geometric type". Besides graphs with 2 vertices, and graphs of geometric type, there are only 9 other "exceptional" mutation classes that are known to be finite. In this paper we introduce 2 new exceptional finite mutation classes.
Symmetric and Quasi-Symmetric Functions associated to Polymatroids

To every subspace arrangement X we will associate symmetric functions P[X] and H[X]. These symmetric functions encode the Hilbert series and the minimal projective resolution of the product ideal associated to the subspace arrangement. They can be defined for discrete polymatroids as well. The invariant H[X] specializes to the Tutte polynomial T[X]. Billera, Jia and Reiner recently introduced a quasi-symmetric function F[X] (for matroids) which behaves valuatively with respect to matroid base polytope decompositions. We will define a quasi-symmetric function G[X] for polymatroids which has this property as well. Moreover, G[X] specializes to P[X], H[X], T[X] and F[X].

We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotients for quivers). In the Appendix we include a version of Belkale's geometric proof of Fulton's conjecture that works for arbitrary quivers.
Hilbert series of subspace arrangements

The vanishing ideal I of a subspace arrangement is an intersection of linear ideals. We give a formula for the Hilbert polynomial of I if the subspaces meet transversally. We also give a formula for the Hilbert series of a product J of the linear ideals without any assumptions on the subspace arrangement. It turns out that the Hilbert series of J is a combinatorial invariant of the subspace arrangement: it only depends on the intersection lattice and the dimension function. The graded Betti numbers of J are determined by the Hilbert series, so they are combinatorial invariants as well. The results can be applied to Generalized Principal Component Analysis (GPCA), a tool that is useful for computer vision and image processing.

In this paper we give the first method for constructing n-multimagic squares (and hypercubes) for any n. We give an explicit formula in the case of squares and an effective existence proof in the higher dimensional case. Finally we prove that n-multimagic squares do not exist for certain orders.

We construct error correcting nonlinear binary codes using a construction of Bose and Chowla in additive number theory. Our method extends a construction of Graham and Sloane for constant weight codes. The new codes improve 1028 of the 7168 best known h-error correcting codes of wordlength at most 512 and h at most 14. We give assymptotical comparisons to shortened BCH codes. Tables of new lower bounds for "A(n,d)" are included.

The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a module gives a rough measure of its complexity. We bound the regularity of a module given a system of approximating modules whose regularities are known. Such approximations can arise naturally for modules constructed by inductive combinatorial means. We apply these methods to bound the regularity of ideals constructed as combinations of linear ideals and the module of derivations of a hyperplane arrangement as well as to give degree bounds for invariants of finite groups.

Suppose that G is a linearly reductive group. We study the minimal free resolution of the invariant ring. If G is a finite linearly reductive group, then the ring of invariants is generated in degree at most |G|, the group order. We prove that the ideal of relations of a minimal set of generators of the invariant ring is generated in degree at most 2|G|.

We show that the ideal of an arrangement of d linear subspaces of projective space is d-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo and Mumford, answering a question of B. Sturmfels. In particular this implies that the ideal of an arrangement of d subspaces is generated in degrees less than or equal to d.
