Galois Automorphisms And Littlewood Decompositions
The study of modular representation theory of the double covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups reveals rich and subtle combinatorial and algebraic phenomena involving their irreducible characters and the structure of their p-blocks, where p is an odd prime number. In this paper, we investigate the action of certain Galois automorphisms, those that act on p'-roots of unity by a power of p, on spin characters, with an emphasis on their interaction with perfect isometries and block theory. In particular, we prove that perfect isometries constructed by the first author and J.\,B. Gramain in \cite{BrGr3}, which were used to establish a weaker form of the Kessar--Schaps conjecture, remain preserved under this Galois action whenever certain natural compatibility conditions occur.

On simultaneous $(s, s+t, s+2t, \dots)$-core partitions
We consider simultaneous $(s,s+t,s+2t,\dots,s+pt)$-core partitions in the large-$p$ limit, or (when $s<t$), partitions in which no hook may be of length $s \pmod{t}$. We study generating functions, containment properties, and congruences when $s$ is not coprime to $t$. As a boundary case of the general study made by Cho, Huh and Sohn, we provide enumerations when $s$ is coprime to $t$, and answer positively a conjecture of Fayers on the polynomial behavior of the size of the set of simultaneous $(s,s+t,s+2t,\dots,s+pt)$-core partitions when $p$ grows arbitrarily large. Of particular interest throughout is the comparison to the behavior of simultaneous $(s,t)$-cores.
A combinatorial introduction to Adinkras
We survey the combinatorics of the Adinkra, a graphical device for solving differential equations in supersymmetry. These graphs represent an exceptional class of 1-factorizations with further augmentations. As a new feature, we characterize Adinkras using Latin rectangles.

A crank-based approach to the theory of 3-core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This note is concerned with the set of integral solutions of the equation $x^2+3y^2=12n+4$, where $n$ is a positive integer. We will describe a parametrization of this set using the 3-core partitions of n. In particular we construct a crank using the action of a suitable subgroup of the isometric group of the plane that we connect with the unit group of the ring of Eisenstein integers. We also show that the process goes in the reverse direction: from the solutions of the equation and the crank, we can describe the 3-core partitions of n. As a consequence we describe an explicit bijection between $3$-core partitions and ideals of the ring of Eisenstein integers, explaining a result of G. Han and K. Ono obtained using modular forms.

Cores and quotients of partitions through the Frobenius symbol
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Frobenius symbol was first introduced in 1900 by Frobenius as a way to encode an integer partition. In 1941, motivated by the modular representation theory of the symmetric group, Nakayama introduced the idea of a p-core partition, for p prime, using hook removals. In the following decade, Robinson, Littlewood, Staal and Farahat codified the $p$-quotient of such a partition, using variations of the star diagram. Since the 1970s, the convention has been to build up the theory of both core and quotients with the abacus construction, first introduced by G. James. In this paper we return to the earlier point of view. First we show that, for any positive integer t, the t-core and t-quotient of an integer partition can be directly obtained from its Frobenius symbol. The argument also works in the opposite direction: that is, given the Frobenius symbol of a t-core and a $t$-tuple of Frobenius symbols, one can recover the Frobenius symbol of the corresponding partition. One immediate application is the calculation of the Durfee number of the associated partition from the Frobenius symbols of the core and quotient. In 1991, J. Scopes gathered together the $p$-core partitions into families to prove that Donovan's conjecture holds for the symmetric groups at the prime p. We describe, using our methods, the action of the affine Weyl group W_p of type $A$ on Frobenius symbols, and use this to parametrize and compute the explicit number of Scopes families. In particular we enumerate both the infinite and finite Scopes families. Core partitions have also attracted recent interest in number theory. By constructing explicit and combinatorial bijections, we revisit some well-known identities originally obtained using sophisticated methods. We end with a close study of the relationship between certain hooks in the quotient and certain hooks in the associated partition.
Simultaneous core partitions with nontrivial common divisor
Published in Ramanujan Journal 56, no. 3 (2021), 839-863 • View PublicationBIB
A tremendous amount of research has been done in the last two decades on $(s,t)$-core partitions when $s$ and $t$ are positive integers with no common divisor. Here we change perspective slightly and explore properties of $(s,t)$-core and $(\bar{s},\bar{t})$-core partitions for $s$ and $t$ with nontrivial common divisor $g$. We begin by revisiting work by D. Aukerman, D. Kane and L. Sze on $(s,t)$-core partitions for nontrivial $g$ before obtaining a generating function for the number of $(\bar{s},\bar{t})$-core partitions of $n$ under the same conditions. Our approach, using the $g$-core, $g$-quotient and bar-analogues, allows for new results on $t$-cores and self-conjugate $t$-cores that are {\it not} $g$-cores and $\bar{t}$-cores that are {\it not} $\bar{g}$-cores, thus strengthening positivity results of K. Ono and A. Granville, J. Baldwin et. al., and I. Kiming. We then detail a new bijection between self-conjugate $(s,t)$-core and $(\bar{s},\bar{t})$-core partitions for $s$ and $t$ odd with odd, nontrivial common divisor $g$. Here the core-quotient construction fits remarkably well with certain lattice-path labelings due to B. Ford, H. Mai, and L. Sze and C. Bessenrodt and J. Olsson. Along the way we give a new proof of a correspondence of J. Yang between self-conjugate $t$-core and $\bar{t}$-core partitions when $t$ is odd and positive. We end by noting $(s,t)$-core and $(\bar{s}, \bar{t})$-core partitions inherit Ramanujan-type congruences from those of $g$-core and $\bar{g}$-core partitions.

The Navarro Conjecture for the alternating groups
Published in Alg. Number Th. 15 (2021) 821-862 • View PublicationBIB
Recently Navarro proposed a strengthening of the unsolved McKay conjecture using Galois automorphisms. We prove that the Navarro conjecture holds for the alternating groups when the prime p is odd.

Abaci structures of $(s,ms\pm1)$-core partitions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24, no. 1 (2017), Article P1.5 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a geometric approach to the study of $(s,ms-1)$-core and $(s,ms+1)$-core partitions through the associated $ms$-abaci. This perspective yields new proofs for results of H. Xiong and A. Straub (originally proposed by T. Amdeberhan) on the enumeration of $(s, s+1)$ and $(s,ms-1)$-core partitions with distinct parts. It also enumerates the $(s, ms+1)$-cores with distinct parts. Furthermore, we calculate the weight of the $(s, ms-1,ms+1)$-core partition with the largest number of parts. Finally we use 2-core partitions to enumerate self-conjugate core partitions with distinct parts. The central idea is that the $ms$-abaci of maximal $(s,ms\pm1)$-cores can be built up from $s$-abaci of $(s,s\pm 1)$-cores in an elegant way.

A combinatorial proof of a relationship between maximal $(2k-1,2k+1)$ and $(2k-1,2k,2k+1)$-cores
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23, no. 1 (2016), Article P1.13 • View PublicationBIB
Integer partitions which are simultaneously $t$--cores for distinct values of $t$ have attracted significant interest in recent years. When $s$ and $t$ are relatively prime, Olsson and Stanton have determined the size of the maximal $(s,t)$-core $κ_{s,t}$. When $k\geq 2$, a conjecture of Amdeberhan on the maximal $(2k-1,2k,2k+1)$-core $κ_{2k-1,2k,2k+1}$ has also recently been verified by numerous authors. In this work, we analyze the relationship between maximal $(2k-1,2k+1)$-cores and maximal $(2k-1,2k,2k+1)$-cores. In previous work, the first author noted that, for all $k\geq 1,$ $$ \vert \, κ_{2k-1,2k+1}\, \vert = 4\vert \, κ_{2k-1,2k,2k+1}\, \vert $$ and requested a combinatorial interpretation of this unexpected identity. Here, using the theory of abaci, partition dissection, and elementary results relating triangular numbers and squares, we provide such a combinatorial proof.

Congruences for spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 80 (2016), 114-130 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. The bar partitions with sign and $p$-bar-core partitions with sign respectively label the spin characters and $p$-defect zero spin characters of the double cover of the symmetric group, and by restriction, those of the alternating group. The generating functions for these objects have been determined by J. Olsson. We study these functions from an arithmetic perspective, using classical analytic tools and elementary generating function manipulation to obtain many Ramanujan-like congruences.

Symmetry in maximal $(s-1,s+1)$ cores
We explain a "curious symmetry" for maximal $(s-1,s+1)$-core partitions first observed by T. Amdeberhan and E. Leven. Specifically, using the $s$-abacus, we show such partitions have empty $s$-core and that their $s$-quotient is comprised of 2-cores. This imposes strong conditions on the partition structure, and implies both the Amdeberhan-Leven result and additional symmetry. We also find a more general family that exhibits these symmetries.

The number of self-conjugate core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture on the monotonicity of t-core partitions in an article of Stanton [Open positivity conjectures for integer partitions, Trends Math., 2:19-25, 1999] has been the catalyst for much recent research on t-core partitions. We conjecture Stanton-like monotonicity results comparing self-conjugate (t+2)- and t-core partitions of n. We obtain partial results toward these conjectures for values of t that are large with respect to n, and an application to the block theory of the symmetric and alternating groups. To this end we prove formulas for the number of self-conjugate t-core partitions of n as a function of the number of self-conjugate partitions of smaller n. Additionally, we discuss the positivity of self-conjugate 6-core partitions and introduce areas for future research in representation theory, asymptotic analysis, unimodality, and numerical identities and inequalities.

On core and bar-core partitions
Published in The Ramanujan Journal, vol 27 (2012), no. 2, pp. 229-233 • View PublicationBIB
If $s$ and $t$ are relatively prime J. Olsson proved in 2008 that the $s$-core of a $t$-core partition is again a $t$-core partition, and that the $s$-bar-core of a $t$-bar-core partition is again a $t$-bar-core partition. Here generalized results are proved for partitions and bar-partitions when the restriction that $s$ and $t$ be relatively prime is removed.

Partitions with prescribed hooksets
The combinatorial properties of partitions with various restrictions on their hooksets are explored. A connection with numerical semigroups extends current results on simultaneous s/t-cores. Conditions that suffice for a partition to possess required hooks are developed.
