Boxicity and Threshold Dimension of Zero Divisor Graphs
The zero divisor graph $Γ(R)$ of a finite commutative ring $R$ has as vertices the non-zero zero divisors of $R$, with an edge between two elements exactly when their product is zero. We determine the boxicity and threshold dimension of $Γ(R)$ for two classes of finite commutative rings: reduced rings and quotients of principal ideal domains. Our proofs use a new combinatorial gadget, the integral covering graph, that captures the structure shared by both ring families and generalizes the disjointness graph on subsets of $[n]$, where two subsets are adjacent if and only if they are disjoint. In doing so, we answer two questions recently posed by L.~Sunil Chandran and Suraj Kumar Sahoo in Boxicity of Zero Divisor Graphs, Discrete Applied Mathematics 391 (2026).

The boxicity of the compressed zero divisor graph of the ring of integers modulo N
The boxicity of a graph $G$, denoted by $box(G)$, is the minimum integer $d\geq 0$ such that $G$ is the intersection graph of axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The class of zero divisor graphs introduced by Beck (1988) is a popular class of graphs and has been studied extensively by several researchers. Suppose $Z(R)$ is the set of zero divisors of a ring $R$. The zero divisor graph $Γ(R)$ for a ring $R $ is defined as the graph with the vertex set $V(Γ(R))=Z(R)$ and $E(Γ(R))=\{\{x,y\}\colon x,y\in Z(R)\text{ with }x\neq y\text{ and }x y=0\}$. One can define an equivalence relation $\sim$ on $V(Γ(R))$ such that for vertices $x$ and $y$, one has $x\sim y$ if and only if $x$ and $y$ have the same annihilator, i.e., $Ann(x)=Ann(y)$. The compressed zero divisor graph $Γ_E(R)$ for a ring $R$ is the simple graph obtained from $Γ(R)$ by retaining exactly one vertex from each equivalence class induced by $\sim$. In this paper, we completely answer two open questions posed in Discrete Applied Mathematics 391 (2026), pp. 127-136. Let $N=\prod_{i=1}^a p_i^{n_i}$ be the prime factorization of a positive integer $N$ and let $\mathbb{Z}_N$ be the ring of integers modulo $N$. We determine the exact boxicity of the compressed zero divisor graph $Γ_E(\mathbb{Z}_N)$. We show that when $a\geq 2$, $box(Γ_E(\mathbb{Z}_N))= a-1$ if and only if one of the following is true: $(i)$ $a\geq 2$ and $N$ is the product of two coprime integers $x$ and $y$ such that $x$ is a square-free integer and $y$ is the cube of a prime number; $(ii)$ $a\geq 3$ and $N$ is square-free; $(iii)$ $a\geq 2$, $N$ is cube-free, not square-free, and contains at least one prime divisor $p_i$ such that $n_i=1$. If $a=2$ and $n_1=n_2=1$, then $Γ_{E}(\mathbb{Z}_N)$ is a clique, and so, $box(Γ_{E}(\mathbb{Z}_N))=0$. In all other cases, $box(Γ_{E}(\mathbb{Z}_N))=a$.

Combinatorial and analytic aspects of independence polynomials of zero divisor graphs
The independence polynomial of a graph encapsulates all independent sets of differing sizes, a task classified as NP-hard in theoretical computer science. This article examines the independence polynomial of zero divisor graphs in commutative rings. We demonstrate that the independent sets, represented as a sequence of coefficients of the independence polynomial, exhibit unimodality and log-concavity. Therefore, for the independence polynomial of some zero divisor graphs, the unimodal conjecture is true. Additionally, the characteristics of the zeros of the independence polynomial are delineated, along with their corresponding annular regions on the plane.

Betti numbers for cochordal zero-divisor graphs of commutative rings
This paper studies the zero-divisor graphs attached to several finite chain-ring families and computes the homological invariants of their edge ideals by using cochordal constructible systems. We begin with a general layered graph $C(q,L)$, whose vertices are arranged according to valuation layers and whose adjacency is governed by the single rule $k+\ell\ge L$, form some integers $k$ and $\ell$. This graph models the zero-divisor structure of a finite chain ring with residue field of order $q$ and nilpotency index $L$. We prove that $C(q,L)$ is cochordal, determine its type sequence, then correct and refine the Betti formula of its edge ideal [Dung and Vu, Cochordal zero divisor graphs and Betti numbers of their edge ideals, Comm. Algebra 54(2) (2026) 736--744]. The results are then specialized to the Gaussian quotient rings $\mathbb Z_{2^m}[i]$ and to the truncated polynomial rings $\mathbb Z_p[x]/(x^c)$. We compute projective dimension, regularity, independence number, height, Hilbert series, and Cohen--Macaulay behavior. The computations show that these quotient rings have $2$-linear resolutions, while Cohen--Macaulayness occurs only in the expected degenerate or complete-graph cases.

Forbidden subgraphs in divisor graphs and an Erdős divisibility problem
Erdős asked for the largest size $f(n)$ of a subset of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ with no element dividing two others. We show that $f(n)=c_2\,n+o(n)$ for an effectively computable constant $c_2$, and moreover that the number $q(n)$ of such subsets satisfies $q(n)=β_2^{n+o(n)}$ for a computable constant $β_2$. To prove this, we recast the divisibility constraint as forbidding a certain directed subgraph in the divisor graph on $\{1,\dots,n\}$ and prove a more general result: for any finite family of connected forbidden subgraphs of the divisor graph, both the extremal density and counting rate are effectively computable. The proof uses a theorem of McNew on local statistics of divisor graphs.

On the largest strongly connected component of randomly oriented divisor graphs
We introduce the study of \textit{randomly oriented divisor graphs}. For each $ρ\in [0,1]$, the randomly oriented divisor graph $\mathcal{D}_ρ(N)$ is obtained from the divisor graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots, N\}$ by directing each edge according to divisibility and independently reversing the direction of each edge with probability $ρ$. We study the expected size of the largest strongly connected component, $\textbf{E}[\#Φ(\mathcal{D}_ρ(N))]$. Our main result gives a lower bound for this quantity in terms of the distribution of values of the divisor function $τ(n)$. As a consequence, we show that for any fixed $ρ\in (0,1)$, the largest strongly connected component has expected size asymptotic to $N$. To obtain explicit bounds, we prove an effective version of a theorem of Hardy and Ramanujan on the normal order of $\log τ(n)$, which may be of independent interest.
Fault-tolerant metric basis and dimension of barycentric subdivision of zero divisor graphs
The undirected zero divisor graph of a commutative ring with unity \( R \), denoted by \( Γ(R) = (V(Γ(R)), E(Γ(R))) \). The vertex set \( V(Γ(R)) \) consists of all the non-zero zero-divisors of \( R \). The edge set \( E(Γ(R)) \) is defined by the set \( \{ e = a_1 a_2 \mid a_1 \cdot a_2 = 0 \text{ and } a_1, a_2 \in V(Γ(R)) \} \). The barycentric subdivision of $Γ$ is the process of subdividing each edge by inserting new vertex in the graph $Γ$. In this article, we have focused on the fault-tolerant metric dimension of the barycentric subdivision of zero divisor graph of the group of integers modulo \( n \), represented by \( fdim(BS(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n )\), where \( n = pq \); \( p \) and \( q \) are distinct odd primes with \( q > p \). We also demonstrate that \( fdim(BS(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n) \geq q - 1 \) for every \( n = pq \), where \( p \) and \( q \) are any distinct odd primes with \( q > p \).
Metric basis and dimension of barycentric subdivision of zero divisor graphs
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity 1, and $ G(V,E)$ be a simple, connected, nontrivial graph. Let $d(a,c)$ be the distance between the vertices $a$ and $c $ in $G$. An undirected zero divisor graph of a ring $R$ is denoted by $Γ(R) = (V(Γ(R)), E(Γ(R)))$, where the vertex set $V(Γ(R))$ consists of all the non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, and the edge set $E(Γ(R))$ is defined as follows: $E(Γ(R)) = $ $\{e = a_1a_2$ $ |$ $ a_1 \cdot a_2 = 0$ $\&$ $ a_1, a_2 \in V(Γ(R))\}$. In this article, we consider the zero divisor graph of a group of integers modulo \(n\), denoted as \(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)\), where \(n=pq\). Here, \(p\) and \(q\) are distinct primes, with \(q > p\). We aim to determine the metric dimension of the barycentric subdivision of the zero divisor graph \(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)\), denoted by \(dim(BS(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)))\), and we also prove that \(dim(BS(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)))\geq q-2\) for every \(n=pq\), where \(p\) and \(q\) are distinct primes and $q>p$.

On the non-zero divisor graph of the Hamilton quaternions over $\mathbb Z_{2^n}$
Let $R$ be a ring with unity. The non-zero divisor graph of $R$, $Φ(R)$, is the graph with vertex set $R\backslash \{0,1,-1\}$, and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if either $xy$ or $yx$ is non-zero. In this article we associate $Φ(R)$ to the ring of Hamilton quaternions over $\mathbb Z_{2^n}$, $\mathbb H(\mathbb Z_{2^n})$. The detailed structure of the elements in $\mathbb H(\mathbb Z_{2^n})$ is presented, based on which various structural properties of the graph $Φ(\mathbb H(\mathbb Z_{2^n}))$, such as connectedness, adjacency of vertices, traversability, and planarity, are studied. Furthermore, we derive bounds for clique number and chromatic number.
The Unit-Zero Divisor Graph of a Commutative Ring
This paper introduces a new approach to associating a graph with a commutative ring. Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The unit-zero divisor graph of a commutative ring $R$, denoted by $G_{UZ}(R)$, offers a novel framework for exploring the interaction between ring and graph structures. The vertex set of $G_{UZ}(R)$ consists of all elements of the ring $R$. Two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $G_{UZ}(R)$ are adjacent if and only if $x + y$ is a unit and $xy$ is a zero divisor in $R$. This dual adjacency condition gives rise to a graph that reflects both the additive and multiplicative behavior of the ring. This study investigates key structural properties of $G_{UZ}(R)$, including regularity, bipartiteness, planarity, and Hamiltonicity. In addition, it examines how these graph features are influenced by the algebraic structure of the ring, particularly the group of units, the set of zero divisors, ideals, and the Jacobson radical.

Etude du graphe divisoriel 6
The divisor graph is the non oriented graph whose vertices are the positive integers, and edges are the {a,b} such that a divides b or b divides a. Let F(x,y) be the maximum number of integers<= x belonging in one of y pairwise disjoint simple path of the restriction of the divisor graph to integers <= x. Our main result is the following. There exist two real numbers K >c>0 such that for every x and y with x>=2y>=2 , we have cx / log(x/y) <= F(x,y) <= Kx / log(x/y). It answers a question of Erdös.

Boxicity and Cubicity of Divisor Graphs and Power Graphs
The \textit{boxicity} (\textit{cubicity}) of an undirected graph $Γ$ is the smallest non-negative integer $k$ such that $Γ$ can be represented as the intersection graph of axis-parallel rectangular boxes (unit cubes) in $\mathbb{R}^k$. An undirected graph is classified as a \textit{comparability graph} if it is isomorphic to the comparability graph of some partial order. This paper studies boxicity and cubicity for subclasses of comparability graphs. We initiate the study of boxicity and cubicity of a special class of algebraically defined comparability graphs, namely the \textit{power graphs}. The power graph of a group is an undirected graph whose vertex set is the group itself, with two elements being adjacent if one is a power of the other. We analyse the case when the underlying groups of power graphs are cyclic. Another important family of comparability graphs is \textit{divisor graphs}, which arises from a number-theoretically defined poset, namely the \textit{divisibility poset}. We consider a subclass of divisor graphs, denoted by $D(n)$, where the vertex set is the set of positive divisors of a natural number $n$. We first show that to study the boxicity (cubicity) of the power graph of the cyclic group of order $n$, it is sufficient to study the boxicity (cubicity) of $D(n)$. We derive estimates, tight up to a factor of $2$, for the boxicity and cubicity of $D(n)$. The exact estimates hold good for power graphs of cyclic groups.

Which coprime graphs are divisor graphs?
For a finite group $G$, the coprime graph $Γ(G)$ of $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G$, in which two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if the order of $a$ and the order of $b$ are coprime. In this paper, we first give a characterization for which generalized lexicographic products are divisor graphs. As applications, we show that every of power graph, reduced power graph and order graph is a divisor graph, which also implies the main result in [N. Takshak, A. Sehgal, A. Malik, Power graph of a finite group is always divisor graph, Asian-Eur. J. Math. 16 (2023), ID: 2250236]. Then, we prove that the coprime graph of a group is a generalized lexicographic product, and give two characterizations for which coprime graphs are divisor graphs. We also describe the groups $G$ with $|π(G)|\le 4$, whose coprime graph is a divisor graph. Finally, we classify the finite groups $G$ so that $Γ(G)$ is a divisor graph if $G$ is a nilpotent group, a dihedral group, a generalized quaternion group, a symmetric group, an alternating group, a direct product of two non-trivial groups, and a sporadic simple group.

Cochordal zero divisor graphs and Betti numbers of their edge ideals
We associate a sequence of positive integers, termed the type sequence, with a cochordal graph. Using this type sequence, we compute all graded Betti numbers of its edge ideal. We then classify all positive integer $n$ such that the zero divisor graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z}$ is cochordal and determine all the graded Betti numbers of its edge ideal.
Eccentricity Spectra and Integral Eigenvalues of Zero Divisor Graphs
In this work, we study the eccentricity spectra of zero divisor graphs (ZDGs) associated with the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n.$ While previous studies have examined the Laplacian and distance Laplacian spectra of ZDGs, the eccentricity spectra have remained largely unknown due to the unique features of the eccentricity matrix. More specifically, we prove that for a prime $p$, the ZDG and extended ZDG of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^t}$ have integral eccentricity eigenvalues for $t \geq 3$ and $t \geq 2$, respectively. We also find the eccentricity spectra for specific classes of ZDGs and the relationship between the eccentricity matrix of these ZDGs and their tree structures using matrix analysis tools. In addition, for the usefulness of the energy gap in applications, we have calculated the eccentricity energy gap of ZDGs. These findings reveal interesting behaviours of the eccentricity matrix and may contribute to a more profound understanding of the structural properties of ZDGs.
On Certain Bounds for Multiset Dimensions of Zero-Divisor Graphs Associated with Rings
This article investigates multiset dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Through rigorous analysis, we establish general bounds for the multiset dimension (Mdim) in ZD-graphs, exploring various commutative rings including the ring Z_n of integers modulo n, Gaussian integers and quotient polynomial rings. Additionally, we examine the behavior of Mdim under algebraic operations and discuss bounds in terms of diameter and maximum degree. This study enhances our understanding of algebraic structures and their graphical representations.

A note on eigenvalues of zero divisor graphs associated with commutative rings
For a commutative ring $R,$ with non-zero zero divisors $Z^{\ast}(R)$. The zero divisor graph $Γ(R)$ is a simple graph with vertex set $Z^{\ast}(R)$, and two distinct vertices $x,y\in V(Γ(R))$ are adjacent if and only if $x\cdot y=0.$ In this note, we provide counter examples to the eigenvalues, the energy and the second Zagreb index related to zero divisor graphs of rings obtained in [Johnson and Sankar, J. Appl. Math. Comp. (2023), \cite{johnson}]. We correct the eigenvalues (energy) and the Zagreb index result for the zero divisor graphs of ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[x]/\langle x^{4} \rangle.$ We show that for any prime $p$, $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{p}[x]/\langle x^{4} \rangle)$ is non-hyperenergetic and for prime $p\geq 3$, $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{p}[x]/\langle x^{4} \rangle)$ is hypoenergetic. We give a formulae for the topological indices of $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{p}[x]/\langle x^{4} \rangle)$ and show that its Zagreb indices satisfy Hansen and Vuki$\check{c}$cević conjecture \cite{hansen}.

A note on the Independent domination polynomial of zero divisor graph of rings
In this note we consider the independent domination polynomial problem along with their unimodal and log-concave properties which were earlier studied by Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy (Soft Comp. 2022). We show that the independent domination polynomial of zero divisor graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ for $n\in \{ pq, p^{2}q, pqr, p^α\}$ where $p,q,r$ are primes with $2<p<q<r$ are not unimodal thereby contradicting the main result of Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy \cite{gursoy}. Besides the authors show that the zero of the independent domination polynomial of these graphs have only real zero and used concept of Newton's inequalities to establish the log-concave property for the afore said polynomials. We show that these polynomials have complex zeros and the technique of Newton's inequalities are not applicable. Finally, by definition of log-concave, we prove that these polynomials are log-concave and fix the flaws in Theorem 10 of Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy \cite{gursoy}.
A Graph-Theoretic Approach to Ring Analysis: Dominant Metric Dimensions in Zero-Divisor Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article investigates the concept of dominant metric dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Consider a finite commutative ring with unity, denoted as R, where nonzero elements x and y are identified as zero divisors if their product results in zero (x.y=0). The set of zero divisors in ring R is referred to as L(R). To analyze various algebraic properties of R, a graph known as the zero-divisor graph is constructed using L(R). This manuscript establishes specific general bounds for the dominant metric dimension (Ddim) concerning the ZD-graph of R. To achieve this objective, we examine the zero divisor graphs for specific rings, such as the ring of Gaussian integers modulo m, denoted as Zm[i], the ring of integers modulo n, denoted as Zn, and some quotient polynomial rings. Additionally, we present a general result outlining bounds for the dominant metric dimension expressed in terms of the maximum degree, girth, clique number, and diameter of the associated ZD-graphs. Finally, we provide insights into commutative rings that share identical metric dimensions and dominant metric dimensions. This exploration contributes to a deeper understanding of the structural characteristics of ZD-graphs and their implications for the algebraic properties of commutative rings.

Common divisor graphs for skew braces
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 229 (2025), no.2, Paper No. 107876 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two common divisor graphs associated with a finite skew brace, based on its $λ$- and $θ$-orbits. We prove that the number of connected components is at most two and the diameter of a connected component is at most four. Furthermore, we investigate their relationship with isoclinism. Similarly to its group theoretic inspiration, the skew braces with a graph with two disconnected vertices are very restricted and are determined. Finally, we classify all finite skew braces with a graph with one vertex, where four infinite families arise.
