On a conjecture concerning the $r$-Euler-Mahonian statistic on permutations
A pair $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ of permutation statistics is said to be $r$-Euler-Mahonian if $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ and
$( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over the set $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$, where $\mathrm{rdes}$ denotes the $r$-descent number and $\mathrm{rmaj}$ denotes the $r$-major index introduced by Rawlings. The main objective of this paper is to prove that $(\mathrm{exc}_r, \mathrm{den}_r)$ and $( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Liu. When $r=1$, the result recovers the equidistribution of $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{maj})$ and $(\mathrm{exc}, \mathrm{den})$, which was first conjectured by Denert and proved by Foata and Zeilberger.
Major Index on Catalan Combinatorics
We study the two statistics, the inversion number and the major index, on Catalan combinatorial objects such as $r$-Dyck paths, $r$-Stirling permutations, non-crossing partitions, Dyck tilings, and symmetric Dyck paths. We show that they are equidistributed with the inversion number or the major index on Dyck paths.
Macdonald polynomials at t = 0 through twisted multiline queues
Multiline queues are versatile combinatorial objects that play a key role in understanding the remarkable connection between the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle and Macdonald polynomials. Specializing the results of Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2018) to the $t=0$ case yields a formula for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials through the Ferrari--Martin (2007) algorithm with a major index ($\texttt{maj}$) statistic. In this paper, we reinterpret the $\texttt{maj}$ statistic as a $\texttt{charge}$ statistic on reading words, thereby bypassing the Ferrari--Martin algorithm to obtain an elegant formula for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials. Our methods naturally extend to the case of bosonic multiline queues, with which we obtain analogous results for the modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials using a $\texttt{cocharge}$ statistic on reading words.
Twisted multiline queues (GMLQs) are obtained from the action of the symmetric group on the rows of a multiline queue. The Ferrari--Martin algorithm was extended to GMLQs by Arita--Ayyer--Mallick--Prolhac (2011), and Aas--Grinberg--Scrimshaw (2020) showed it is preserved under this action. We extend these results by defining a $\texttt{maj}$ statistic on GMLQs that is also preserved under this action. This yields a novel family of formulas, indexed by compositions, for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials. Additionally, we define a procedure on both GMLQs and bosonic multiline queues that we call collapsing, which can can be realized via the Kashiwara (crystal) operators on type-A Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. As an application, we naturally recover the Lascoux--Schützenberger $\texttt{charge}$ formula for the $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and the classical and dual Cauchy identities for Schur functions.
Type B Set partitions, an analogue of restricted growth functions
In this work, we study type B set partitions for a given specific positive integer $k$ defined over $\langle n\rangle=\{-n, -(n-1),\cdots -1,0,1,\cdots n-1,n\}$. We found a few generating functions of type B analogue for some of the set partition statistics defined by Wachs, White and Steingrimsson for partitions over positive integers $[n] =\{1,2,\cdots n\}$, both for standard and ordered set partitions respectively. We extended the idea of restricted growth functions utilized by Wachs and White for set partitions over $[n]$, in the scenario of $\langle n\rangle$ and called the analogue as Signed Restricted Growth Function (SRGF).
We discussed analogues of major index for type B partitions in terms of SRGF. We found an analogue of Foata bijection and reduced matrix for type B set partitions as done by Sagan for set partitions of $[n]$ with sepcific number of blocks $k$. We conclude with some open questions regarding the type B analogue of some well known results already done in case of set partitions of $[n]$.
Mahonian-Stirling statistics for partial permutations
Recently Cheng et al. (Adv. in Appl. Math. 143 (2023) 102451) generalized the inversion number to partial permutations, which are also known as Laguerre digraphs, and asked for a suitable analogue of MacMahon's major index. We provide such a major index, namely, the corresponding maj and inv statistics are equidistributed, and exhibit a Haglund-Remmel-Wilson type identity. We then interpret some Jacobi-Rogers polynomials in terms of Laguerre digraphs generalizing Deb and Sokal's alternating Laguerre digraph interpretation of some special Jacobi-Rogers polynomials.

We assign to each Young diagram $λ$ a subset $\mathcal{B}_{λ'}$ of the collection of Garsia-Stanton descent monomials, and prove that it determines a basis of the Garsia-Procesi module $R_λ$, whose graded character is the Hall-Littlewood polynomial $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. This basis is a major index analogue of the basis $\mathcal{B}_λ\subset R_λ$ defined by certain recursions in due to Garsia and Procesi, in the same way that the descent basis is related to the Artin basis of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$, which in fact corresponds to the case when $λ=1^n$. By anti-symmetrizing a subset of this basis with respect to the corresponding Young subgroup under the Springer action, we obtain a basis in the parabolic case, as well as a corresponding formula for the expansion of $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. Despite a similar appearance, it does not appear obvious how to connect these formulas appear to the specialization of the modified Macdonald formula of Haglund, Haiman and Loehr at $q=0$.

The polynomial of the major index ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ over the subset $T$ of the Coxeter group $W$ is called the Mahonian polynomial over $T$, where ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ is a Mahonian statistic of an element $σ\in T$, whereas the polynomial of the major index ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ with the sign $(-1)^{\ell_W(σ)}$ over the subset $T$ is referred to as the signed Mahonian polynomial over $T$, where ${\ell_W(σ)}$ is the length of $σ\in T$. Gessel, Wachs, and Chow established the formulas for the Mahonian polynomials over the sets of derangements in the symmetric group $S_n$ and the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. By extending Wachs' approach and employing a refinement of Stanley's shuffle theorem established in our recent paper, we derive the formula for the Mahonian polynomials over the set of derangements in the even-signed permutation group $D_n$. This completes a picture which is now known for all the classical Weyl groups. Gessel-Simion, Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and Biagioli previously established formulas for the signed Mahonian polynomials over the classical Weyl groups. Building upon their formulas, we derive the formulas for the signed Mahonian polynomials over the set of derangements in classical Weyl groups. As applications of the formulas for the (signed) Mahonian polynomials over the sets of derangements in the classical Weyl groups, we obtain enumerative formulas of the number of derangements in classical Weyl groups with even lengths.
Probabilistic operators for non-attacking tableaux and a compact formula for the symmetric Macdonald polynomials
We prove a new tableaux formula for the symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$ that has considerably fewer terms and simpler weights than previously existing formulas. Our formula is a sum over certain sorted non-attacking tableaux, weighted by the queue inversion statistic quinv. The quinv statistic originates from a formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;q,t)$ due to Ayyer, Martin, and the author (2022), and is naturally related to the dynamics of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle.
We prove our results by introducing probabilistic operators that act on non-attacking tableaux to generate a set of tableaux whose weighted sum equals $P_λ(X;q,t)$. These operators are a modification of the inversion flip operators of Loehr and Niese (2012), which yield an involution on tableaux that preserves the major index statistic, but fails to preserve the non-attacking condition. Our tableaux are in bijection with the multiline queues introduced by Martin (2020), allowing us to derive an alternative multiline queue formula for $P_λ(X;q,t)$. Finally, our formula recovers an alternative formula for the Jack polynomials $J_λ(X;α)$ due to Knop and Sahi (1996) using the same queue inversion statistic.
Bijections between different combinatorial models for $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials
We consider the monomial expansion of the $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomialsarising from specialization of the modified Macdonald polynomial. The two combinatorial formulas for the latter due to Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr and Ayyer, Mandelshtam and Martin give rise to two different parameterizing sets in each case. We produce bijections between the parameterizing sets which preserve the content and major index statistics. We identify the major index with the charge or cocharge of appropriate words and use descriptions of the latter due to Lascoux-Sch$\ddot{\text{u}}$tzenberger and Killpatrick to show that our bijections have the desired properties.

Given a permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$, define its inverse statistic $\operatorname{ist}$ by $\operatorname{ist}(π):=\operatorname{st}(π^{-1})$. We give a general approach, based on the theory of symmetric functions, for finding the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ whenever $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ are descent statistics: permutation statistics that depend only on the descent composition. We apply this method to a number of descent statistics, including the descent number, the peak number, the left peak number, the number of up-down runs, and the major index. Perhaps surprisingly, in many cases the polynomial giving the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{ist}_{2}$ can be expressed as a simple sum involving products of the polynomials giving the (individual) distributions of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$. Our work leads to a rederivation of Stanley's generating function for doubly alternating permutations, as well as several conjectures concerning real-rootedness and $γ$-positivity.

Two well-known distributions in the study of permutation statistics are the Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. Mahonian statistics include the major index MAJ and the number of inversions INV, while examples of Eulerian statistics are the number of descents des and excedances exc. Also of interest are pairs of permutation statistics that have the same joint distribution as (des, MAJ); these are called Euler Mahonian pairs. In this paper we define a Stirling statistic as one that is equidistributed with the number of right-to-left minima rlmin and a Stirling- Euler-Mahonian triple as a triple of statistics with the same trivariate distribution as (rlmin, des, MAJ). We prove that several triples involving well-known statistics are Stirling-Euler-Mahonian. A general bijective technique is demonstrated for any Mahonian statistic that has a permutation code. Finally, we note several properties of Stirling-Euler-Mahonian triples that follow from earlier results.
Major index on involutions
We find the range of the major index on the various conjugacy classes of involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. In addition to indicating the minimum and the maximum values, we show that except for the case of involutions without fixed points, all the values in the range are attained. For the conjugacy classes of involutions without fixed points, we show that the only missing values are one more than the minimum and one less than the maximum.
Combinatorial Statistics on Pattern-avoiding Permutations
The study of Mahonian statistics dated back to 1915 when MacMahon showed that the major index and the inverse number have the same distribution on a set of permutations with length n. Since then, many Mahonian statistics have been discovered and much effort have been done to find the equidistribution between two Mahonian statistics on permutations avoiding length-3 classical patterns. In recent years, Amini and Do et al. have done extensive research with various methods to prove the equidistributions, ranging from using generating functions, Dyck paths, block decompositions, to bijections. In this thesis, we will solve the conjectured equidistribution between bast and foze on Av(312) using the bijection method, as well as refine two established results by Do et al. with a combinatorial approach.
Permutation Statistics in Conjugacy Classes of the Symmetric Group
We introduce the notion of a weighted inversion statistic on the symmetric group, and examine its distribution on each conjugacy class. Our work generalizes the study of several common permutation statistics, including the number of inversions, the number of descents, the major index, and the number of excedances. As a consequence, we obtain explicit formulas for the first moments of several statistics by conjugacy class. We also show that when the cycle lengths are sufficiently large, the higher moments of arbitrary permutation statistics are independent of the conjugacy class. Fulman (J. Comb. Theory Ser. A., 1998) previously established this result for major index and descents. We obtain these results, in part, by generalizing the techniques of Fulman (ibid.), and introducing the notion of permutation constraints. For permutation statistics that can be realized via symmetric constraints, we show that each moment is a polynomial in the degree of the symmetric group.
A Simple Proof that Major Index and Inversions are Equidistributed
We present a short proof of MacMahon's classic result that the number of permutations with $k$ inversions equals the number whose major index (sum of positions at which descents occur) is $k$

We introduce the cyclic major index of a cycle permutation and give a bivariate analogue of enumerative formula for the cyclic shuffles with a given cyclic descent numbers due to Adin, Gessel, Reiner and Roichman, which can be viewed as a cyclic analogue of Stanley's Shuffle Theorem. This gives an answer to a question of Adin, Gessel, Reiner and Roichman, which has been posed by Domagalski, Liang, Minnich, Sagan, Schmidt and Sietsema again.

We present a formula for a generalisation of the Eulerian polynomial, namely the generating polynomial of the joint distribution of major index and descent statistic over the set of signed multiset permutations. It has a description in terms of the $h^*$-polynomial of a certain polytope. Moreover, we associate a family of polytopes to (generalised) Eulerian polynomials of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$. Using this connection, properties of the generalised Eulerian numbers of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$, such as palindromicity and unimodality, are reflected in certain properties of the associated polytope. We also present results on generalising the connection between descent polynomials and polytopes to coloured (multiset) permutations.
Counting lattice paths by crossings and major index II: tracking descents via two-rowed arrays
We present refined enumeration formulas for lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with two kinds of steps, by keeping track of the number of descents (i.e., turns in a given direction), the major index (i.e., the sum of the positions of the descents), and the number of crossings. One formula considers crossings between a path and a fixed line; the other considers crossings between two paths. Building on the first paper of the series, which used lattice path bijections to give the enumeration with respect to major index and crossings, we obtain a refinement that keeps track of the number of descents. The proof is based on new bijections which rely on certain two-rowed arrays that were introduced by Krattenthaler.

Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials agree up to scalar multiple. The degree of the Grothendieck polynomial is a new permutation statistic which we call the Rajchgot index; we develop the properties of Rajchgot index and relate it to major index and to weak order.

$q$-Kaplansky numbers were considered by Chen and Rota. We find that $q$-Kaplansky numbers are connected to the symmetric differences of Gaussian polynomials introduced by Reiner and Stanton. Based on the work of Reiner and Stanton, we establish the unimodality of $q$-Kaplansky numbers. We also show that $q$-Kaplansky numbers are the generating functions for the inversion number and the major index of two special kinds of $(0,1)$-sequences. Furthermore, we show that $q$-Kaplansky numbers are strongly $q$-log-concave.
