A note on the distribution of major index for Schröder paths
Bonin, Shapiro and Simion (1993) gave two formulas on the distribution of major index for Schröder paths, and proved their result for the case $E<D<N$. In this short note, we correct an error in their proof, and give a complete proof for all cases.
Asymptotic normality of the major index on standard tableaux
We consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We use cumulants to classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, aft, generalizing earlier results of Canfield--Janson--Zeilberger, Chen--Wang--Wang, and others. These results can be interpreted as giving a very precise description of the distribution of irreducible representations in different degrees of coinvariant algebras of certain complex reflection groups. We conclude with some conjectures concerning unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit theorems.

Let ${\mathcal C}_n$ be the set of all permutation cycles of length $n$ over $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $${\mathfrak f}_n(q):=\sum_{σ\in{\mathcal C}_{n+1}}q^{{\mathrm maj}\,σ} $$ be a $q$-analogue of the factorial $n!$, where ${\mathrm maj}$ denotes the major index. We prove a $q$-analogue of Wilson's congruence $$ {\mathfrak f}_{n-1}(q)\equivμ(n)\pmod{Φ_n(q)}, $$ where $μ$ denotes the Möbius function and $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial.

The distribution of descents in fixed conjugacy classes of $S_n$ has been studied, and it is shown that its moments have interesting properties. Kim and Lee showed, by using Curtiss' theorem and moment generating functions, how to prove a central limit theorem for descents in arbitrary conjugacy classes of $S_n$. In this paper, we prove a modified version of Curtiss' theorem to shift the interval of convergence in a more convenient fashion and use this to show that the joint distribution of descents and major indices is asymptotically bivariate normal.
From $q$-Stirling numbers to the Delta Conjecture: a viewpoint from vincular patterns

The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturally. The latter of which is shown to be related to the recently proven Delta Conjecture. During the course, a refined relation between $\mathrm{BAST}$ and its reverse complement $\mathrm{STAT}$ is derived as well.
Tableau posets and the fake degrees of coinvariant algebras

We introduce two new partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. Both posets are ranked by the major index statistic offset by a fixed shift. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. By a theorem of Lusztig--Stanley, this classification can be interpreted as determining which irreducible representations of the symmetric group exist in which homogeneous components of the corresponding coinvariant algebra, strengthening a recent result of the third author for the modular major index. Our approach is to identify patterns in standard tableaux that allow one to mutate descent sets in a controlled manner. By work of Lusztig and Stembridge, the arguments extend to a classification of all nonzero fake degrees of coinvariant algebras for finite complex reflection groups in the infinite family of Shephard--Todd groups.
Families of major index distributions: closed forms and unimodality

Closed forms for $f_{λ,i} (q) := \sum_{τ\in SYT(λ) : des(τ) = i} q^{maj(τ)}$, the distribution of the major index over standard Young tableaux of given shapes and specified number of descents, are established for a large collection of $λ$ and $i$. Of particular interest is the family that gives a positive answer to a question of Sagan and collaborators. All formulas established in the paper are unimodal, most by a result of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. Many can be identified as specializations of Schur functions via the Jacobi-Trudi identities. If the number of arguments is sufficiently large, it is shown that any finite principal specialization of any Schur function $s_λ(1,q,q^2,\dots,q^{n-1})$ has a combinatorial realization as the distribution of the major index over a given set of tableaux.

Given a function defined over a parabolic subgroup of a Coxeter group, equidistributed with the length, we give a procedure to construct a function over the entire group, equidistributed with the length. Such a procedure permits to define functions equidistributed with the length in all the finite Coxeter groups. We can establish our results in the general setting of graded posets which satisfy some properties. These results apply to some known functions arising in Coxeter groups as the major index, the negative major index and the D-negative major index defined in type $A$, $B$ and $D$ respectively.

Recently O. Pechenik studied the cyclic sieving of increasing tableaux of shape $2\times n$, and obtained a polynomial on the major index of these tableaux, which is a $q$-analogue of refined small Schröder numbers. We define row-increasing tableaux and study the major index and amajor index of row-increasing tableaux of shape $2 \times n$. The resulting polynomials are both $q$-analogues of refined large Schröder numbers. For both results we give bijective proofs.

The distribution of descents in a fixed conjugacy class of $S_n$ is studied, and it is shown that its moments have an interesting property. A particular conjugacy class that is of interest is the class of matchings (also known as fixed point free involutions). This paper provides a bijective proof of the symmetry of the descents and major indices of matchings and uses a generating function approach to prove an asymptotic normality theorem for the number of descents in matchings.
Permutation Statistics and Pattern Avoidance in Involutions
Dokos et. al. studied the distribution of two statistics over permutations $\mathfrak{S}_n$ of $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$ that avoid one or more length three patterns. A permutation $σ\in\mathfrak{S}_n$ contains a pattern $π\in\mathfrak{S}_k$ if $σ$ has a subsequence of length $k$ whose letters are in the same relative order as $π$. This paper is a comprehensive study of the same two statistics, number of inversions and major index, over involutions $\mathcal{I}_n=\{σ\in\mathfrak{S}_n:σ^2=\text{id}\}$ that avoid one or more length three patterns. The equalities between the generating functions are consequently determined via symmetries and we conjecture this happens for longer patterns as well. We describe the generating functions for each set of patterns including the fixed-point-free case, $σ(i)\neq i$ for all $i.$ Notating $M\mathcal{I}_n(π)$ as the generating function for the major index over the avoidance class of involutions associated to $π$ we particularly present an independent determination that $M\mathcal{I}_n(321)$ is the $q$-analogue for the central binomial coefficient that first appeared in a paper by Barnebei, Bonetti, Elizalde and Silimbani. A shorter proof is presented that establishes a connection to core, a central topic in poset theory. We also prove that $M\mathcal{I}_n(132;q)=q^{\binom{n}{2}}M\mathcal{I}_n(213;q^{-1})$ and that the same symmetry holds for the larger class of permutations conjecturing that the same equality is true for involutions and permutations given any pair of patterns of the form $k(k-1)\dots 1(k+1)(k+2)\dots m$ and $12\dots (k-1) m(m-1)\dots k$, $k\leq m$.
A generalized major index statistic on tableaux
We extend the family of statistics maj_d, introduced for permutations by Kadell (1985), to standard Young tableaux. At one extreme, we have the traditional Major index statistic maj_1 for tableaux. At the other end, maj_n = inv, the inversion statistic introduced by Haglund and Stevens (2006). This is answers a question of Assaf (2008), who defined maj_2 and maj_3 for tableaux.

We provide a crystal structure on the set of ordered multiset partitions, which recently arose in the pursuit of the Delta Conjecture. This conjecture was stated by Haglund, Remmel and Wilson as a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture. Various statistics on ordered multiset partitions arise in the combinatorial analysis of the Delta Conjecture, one of them being the minimaj statistic, which is a variant of the major index statistic on words. Our crystal has the property that the minimaj statistic is constant on connected components of the crystal. In particular, this yields another proof of the Schur positivity of the graded Frobenius series of the generalization $R_{n,k}$ due to Haglund, Rhoades and Shimozono of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$. The crystal structure also enables us to demonstrate the equidistributivity of the minimaj statistic with the major index statistic on ordered multiset partitions.
Major index over descent for pattern-avoiding permutations
An open conjecture in pattern avoidance theory is that the distribution of the major index among 321-avoiding permutations is distributed unimodally. We construct a formula for this distribution, and in the case of 2 descents prove unimodality, with unimodality for 3 through 5 descents likely being little more complicated. The formula refines the $q$-analogue of the Frame-Robinson-Thrall hooklength formula for two-rowed partitions, and in the latter part of the paper we discuss another theorem of the same type, and further exploration toward this question. We also give observations on the analogous behaviors for other permutation patterns of length 3.

Reiner-Stanton-White defined the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) associated to a finite cyclic group action and a polynomial. A key example arises from the length generating function for minimal length coset representatives of a parabolic quotient of a finite Coxeter group. In type A, this result can be phrased in terms of the natural cyclic action on words of fixed content.
There is a natural notion of refinement for many CSP's. We formulate and prove a refinement, with respect to the major index statistic, of this CSP on words of fixed content by also fixing the cyclic descent type. The argument presented is completely different from Reiner-Stanton-White's representation-theoretic approach. It is combinatorial and largely, though not entirely, bijective in a sense we make precise with a "universal" sieving statistic on words, "flex".
A building block of our argument involves cyclic sieving for shifted subset sums, which also appeared in Reiner-Stanton-White. We give an alternate, largely bijective proof of a refinement of this result by extending some ideas of Wagon-Wilf.

We generalize a map by S. Mason regarding two combinatorial models for key polynomials, in a way that accounts for the major index.
We also define similar variants of this map, that regards alternative models for the modified Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$, thus partially answer a question by J. Haglund.
These maps imply certain uniqueness property regarding inversion-- and coinversion-free fillings, which allows us to generalize the notion of charge to a non-symmetric setting, thus answering a question by A. Lascoux. The analogous question in the symmetric setting proves a conjecture by K. Nelson.

Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Given a permutation $π$, let $des(π)$ denote the descent number of $π$ and $maj(π)$ denote the major index of $π$. Babson and Steingrímsson conjectured that $(des, stat)$ and $(des, maj)$ are equidistributed on $S_n$. Foata and Zeilberger settled this conjecture using q-enumeration, generating functions and Maple packages ROTA and PERCY. Later, Burstein provided a bijective proof of a refinement of this conjecture. In this paper, we give a new bijective proof of this conjecture.

We provide simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r$ mod $n$, for all $r$. Our result generalizes the $r=1$ case due essentially to (1974) and proves a recent conjecture due to Sundaram (2016) for the $r=0$ case. A byproduct of the proof is an asymptotic equidistribution result for "almost all" shapes. The proof uses a representation-theoretic formula involving Ramanujan sums and normalized symmetric group character estimates. Further estimates involving "opposite" hook lengths are given which are well-adapted to classifying which partitions $λ\vdash n$ have $f^λ\leq n^d$ for fixed $d$. We also give a new proof of a generalization of the hook length formula due to Fomin-Lulov (1995) for symmetric group characters at rectangles. We conclude with some remarks on unimodality of symmetric group characters.

We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.

We study Dirichlet series enumerating orbits of Cartesian products of maps whose orbit distributions are modelled on the distributions of finite index subgroups of free abelian groups of finite rank. We interpret Euler factors of such orbit Dirichlet series in terms of generating polynomials for statistics on multiset permutations, viz. descent and major index, generalizing Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials.
We give two main applications of this combinatorial interpretation. Firstly, we establish local functional equations for the Euler factors of the orbit Dirichlet series under consideration. Secondly, we determine these (global) Dirichlet series' abscissae of convergence and establish some meromorphic continuation beyond these abscissae. As a corollary, we describe the asymptotics of the relevant orbit growth sequences. For Cartesian products of more than two maps we establish a natural boundary for meromorphic continuation. For products of two maps, we prove the existence of such a natural boundary subject to a combinatorial conjecture.
