A Bruhat order for Latin squares and alternating sign hypermatrices
The Bruhat order on permutation matrices extends to alternating sign matrices via corner-sum matrices, where the order is given by entrywise domination. A classical result of Lascoux and Schützenberger states that alternating sign matrices form the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order on permutations. Brualdi and Dahl introduced alternating sign hypermatrices as a three-dimensional analogue of alternating sign matrices and used them to generalise Latin squares, which may be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of permutation matrices. In this paper, in analogy with the two-dimensional case, we define and study a Bruhat order $\preceq_B$ on Latin squares and alternating sign hypermatrices. We introduce the corresponding corner-sum hypermatrices $\mathcal C_n$ and prove that entrywise domination on $\mathcal C_n$ encodes this order. We show that $\mathcal C_n$ is a distributive lattice, but that, unlike in dimension two, it is not the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the poset of Latin squares. We further characterise the covering relations for $\mathcal C_n$ and prove rank formulae generalising the classical case of alternating sign matrices. Finally, we define monotone hypertriangles, prove that they are in bijection with $\mathcal C_n$, and show that they also encode the order by entrywise domination.
Coloured shuffle compatibility, Hadamard products, and ask zeta functions
We devise an explicit method for computing combinatorial formulae for Hadamard products of certain rational generating functions. The latter arise naturally when studying so-called ask zeta functions of direct sums of modules of matrices or class- and orbit-counting zeta functions of direct products of nilpotent groups. Our method relies on shuffle compatibility of coloured permutation statistics and coloured quasisymmetric functions, extending recent work of Gessel and Zhuang.

The intermediate orders of a Coxeter group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a class of partial orders on a Coxeter group associated with sets of reflections. In special cases, these lie between the left weak order and the Bruhat order. We prove that these posets are graded by the length function and that the projections on the right parabolic quotients are always order preserving. We also introduce the notion of $k$-Bruhat graph, $k$-absolute length and $k$-absolute order, proposing some related conjectures and problems.

On Denert's statistic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the numerators of genus zeta function associated with local hereditary orders studied by Denert can be described in terms of the joint distribution of Euler-Mahonian statistics on multiset permutations defined by Han. We use this result to deduce a reciprocity property for genus zeta functions of local hereditary orders whose associated composition is a rectangle. We also record a remarkable identity satisfied by genus zeta functions of local hereditary orders in terms of Hadamard products of genus zeta functions of maximal orders. Finally, we define Mahonian companions of excedance statistics on groups of signed and even-signed permutations.
Odd diagrams, Bruhat order, and pattern avoidance

The odd diagram of a permutation is a subset of the classical diagram with additional parity conditions. In this paper, we study classes of permutations with the same odd diagram, which we call odd diagram classes. First, we prove a conjecture relating odd diagram classes and 213- and 312-avoiding permutations. Secondly, we show that each odd diagram class is a Bruhat interval. Instrumental to our proofs is an explicit description of the Bruhat edges that link permutations in a class.

Linear relations with disjoint supports and average sizes of kernels
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the effects of imposing linear relations within modules of matrices on average sizes of kernels. The relations that we consider can be described combinatorially in terms of partial colourings of grids. The cells of these grids correspond to positions in matrices and each defining relation involves all cells of a given colour. We prove that imposing such relations arising from "admissible" partial colourings has no effect on average sizes of kernels over finite quotients of discrete valuation rings. This vastly generalises the known fact that average sizes of kernels of general square and traceless matrices of the same size coincide over such rings. As a group-theoretic application, we explicitly determine zeta functions enumerating conjugacy classes of finite $p$-groups derived from free class-$3$-nilpotent groups for $p \geqslant 5$.
Generalized Igusa functions and ideal growth in nilpotent Lie rings
We introduce a new class of combinatorially defined rational functions and apply them to deduce explicit formulae for local ideal zeta functions associated to the members of a large class of nilpotent Lie rings which contains the free class-2-nilpotent Lie rings and is stable under direct products. Our results unify and generalize a substantial number of previous computations. We show that the new rational functions, and thus also the local zeta functions under consideration, enjoy a self-reciprocity property, expressed in terms of a functional equation upon inversion of variables. We establish a conjecture of Grunewald, Segal, and Smith on the uniformity of normal zeta functions of finitely generated free class-2-nilpotent groups.

Odd length in Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new statistic on any Weyl group which we call the odd length and which reduces, for Weyl groups of types $A$, $B$, and $D$, the the statistics by the same name that have already been defined and studied in [10], [13], [14], and [3]. We show that the signed (by length) generating function of the odd length always factors nicely except possibly in type $E_8$, and we obtain multivariate analogues of these factorizations in types $B$ and $D$.

Enumerating traceless matrices over compact discrete valuation rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate traceless square matrices over finite quotients of compact discrete valuation rings by their image sizes. We express the associated rational generating functions in terms of statistics on symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups, viz. Coxeter groups of types A and B, respectively. These rational functions may also be interpreted as local representation zeta functions associated to the members of an infinite family of finitely generated class-2-nilpotent groups. As a byproduct of our work, we obtain descriptions of the numbers of traceless square matrices over a finite field of fixed rank in terms of statistics on the hyperoctahedral groups.

Odd length: odd diagrams and descent classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define and study odd analogues of classical geometric and combinatorial objects associated to permutations, namely odd Schubert varieties, odd diagrams, and odd inversion sets. We show that there is a bijection between odd inversion sets of permutations and acyclic orientations of the Turán graph, that the dimension of the odd Schubert variety associated to a permutation is the odd length of the permutation, and give several necessary conditions for a subset of $[n] \times [n]$ to be the odd diagram of a permutation. We also study the sign-twisted generating function of the odd length over descent classes of the symmetric groups.

We prove a conjecture of Klopsch-Voll on the signed generating function of a new statistic on the quotients of the symmetric groups. As a consequence of our results we also prove a conjecture of Stasinski-Voll in type $B$.

On some Euler-Mahonian distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the pair of statistics (des, maj) on multiset permutations is equidistributed with the pair (stc, inv) on certain quotients of the symmetric group. We define the analogue of the statistic stc on multiset permutations, whose joint distribution with the inversions equals that of (des, maj). We extend the definition of the statistic stc to hyperoctahedral and even hyperoctahedral groups. Such functions, together with the Coxeter length, are equidistributed, respectively, with (ndes, nmaj) and (ddes, dmaj).

Orbit Dirichlet series and multiset permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Dirichlet series enumerating orbits of Cartesian products of maps whose orbit distributions are modelled on the distributions of finite index subgroups of free abelian groups of finite rank. We interpret Euler factors of such orbit Dirichlet series in terms of generating polynomials for statistics on multiset permutations, viz. descent and major index, generalizing Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials. We give two main applications of this combinatorial interpretation. Firstly, we establish local functional equations for the Euler factors of the orbit Dirichlet series under consideration. Secondly, we determine these (global) Dirichlet series' abscissae of convergence and establish some meromorphic continuation beyond these abscissae. As a corollary, we describe the asymptotics of the relevant orbit growth sequences. For Cartesian products of more than two maps we establish a natural boundary for meromorphic continuation. For products of two maps, we prove the existence of such a natural boundary subject to a combinatorial conjecture.

Odd length for even hyperoctahedral groups and signed generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new statistic on the even hyperoctahedral groups which is a natural analogue of the odd length statistic recently defined and studied on Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $B$. We compute the signed (by length) generating function of this statistic over the whole group and over its maximal and some other quotients and show that it always factors nicely. We also present some conjectures.
