Foata and Zeilberger defined the graphical major index, $\mathrm{maj}'_U$, and the graphical inversion index, $\mathrm{inv}'_U$, for words. These statistics are a generalization of the classical permutation statistics $\mathrm{maj}$ and $\mathrm{inv}$ indexed by directed graphs $U$. They showed that $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed over all rearrangement classes if and only if $U$ is bipartitional. In this paper we strengthen their result by showing that if $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed on a single rearrangement class then $U$ is essentially bipartitional. Moreover, we define a graphical sorting index, $\mathrm{sor}'_U$, which generalizes the sorting index of a permutation. We then characterize the graphs $U$ for which $\mathrm{sor}'_U$ is equidistributed with $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ and $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ on a single rearrangement class.

We consider quotients of the unit cube semigroup algebra by particular $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-invariant ideals. Using Gröbner basis methods, we show that the resulting graded quotient algebra has a basis where each element is indexed by colored permutations $(π,ε)\in\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$ and each element encodes the negative descent and negative major index statistics on $(π,ε)$. This gives an algebraic interpretation of these statistics which was previously unknown. This basis of the $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-quotients allows us to recover certain combinatorial identities involving Euler-Mahonian distributions of statistics.

The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a recent generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the field of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we give evidence for the Delta Conjecture by proving a pair of conjectures of Wilson and Haglund-Remmel-Wilson which give equidistribution results for statistics related to inversion count and major index on objects related to ordered set partitions. Our results generalize the famous result of MacMahon that major index and inversion number share the same distribution on permutations.

Centrosymmetric involutions in the symmetric group S_{2n} are permutations πsuch that π=π^{-1} and π(i)+π(2n+1-i)=2n+1 for all i, and they are in bijection with involutions of the hyperoctahedral group. We describe the distribution of some natural descent statistics on 321-avoiding centrosymmetric involutions, including the number of descents in the first half of the involution, and the sum of the positions of these descents. Our results are based on two new bijections, one between centrosymmetric involutions in S_{2n} and subsets of {1,...,n}, and another one showing that certain statistics on Young diagrams that fit inside a rectangle are equidistributed. We also use the latter bijection to refine a known result stating that the distribution of the major index on 321-avoiding involutions is given by the q-analogue of the central binomial coefficients.
An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered multiset partitions

A classical result of MacMahon states that inversion number and major index have the same distribution over permutations of a given multiset. In this work we prove a strengthening of this theorem originally conjectured by Haglund. Our result can be seen as an equidistribution theorem over the ordered partitions of a multiset into sets, which we call ordered multiset partitions. Our proof is bijective and involves a new generalization of Carlitz's insertion method. This generalization leads to a new extension of Macdonald polynomials for hook shapes. We use our main theorem to show that these polynomials are symmetric and we give their Schur expansion.

Björner and Wachs defined a major index for labeled plane forests and showed that it has the same distribution as the number of inversions. We define and study the distributions of a few other natural statistics on labeled forests. Specifically, we introduce the notions of bottom-to-top maxima, cyclic bottom-to-top maxima, sorting index, and cycle minima. Then we show that the pairs (inv, Bt-max), (sor, Cyc), and (maj, Cbt-max) are equidistributed. Our results extend the result of Björner and Wachs and generalize results for permutations. We also introduce analogous statistics for signed labeled forests and show equidistribution results which generalize results for signed permutations.

For a permutation $π$ the major index of $π$ is the sum of all indices $i$ such that $π_i > π_{i+1}$. It is well known that the major index is equidistributed with the number of inversions over all permutations of length $n$. In this paper, we study the distribution of the major index over pattern-avoiding permutations of length $n$. We focus on the number $M_n^m(Π)$ of permutations of length $n$ with major index $m$ and avoiding the set of patterns $Π$.
First we are able to show that for a singleton set $Π= \{σ\}$ other than some trivial cases, the values $M_n^m(Π)$ are monotonic in the sense that $M_n^m(Π) \leq M_{n+1}^m(Π)$. Our main result is a study of the asymptotic behaviour of $M_n^m(Π)$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that for every fixed $m$ and $Π$ and $n$ large enough, $M_n^m(Π)$ is equal to a polynomial in $n$ and moreover, we are able to determine the degrees of these polynomials for many sets of patterns.

Recently, Kim and Oh expressed the Selberg integral in terms of the number of Young books which are a generalization of standard Young tableaux of shifted staircase shape. In this paper the generating function for Young books according to major index statistic is considered. It is shown that this generating function can be written as a Jackson integral which gives a new $q$-Selberg integral. It is also shown that the new $q$-Selberg integral has an expression in terms of Schur functions.

An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the present work, we focus on fully commutative involutions, which are characterized in terms of Viennot's heaps. By encoding the latter by Dyck-type lattice walks, we enumerate fully commutative involutions according to their length, for all classical finite and affine Coxeter groups. In the finite cases, we also find explicit expressions for their generating functions with respect to the major index. Finally in affine type $A$, we connect our results to Fan--Green's cell structure of the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra.

We provide combinatorial interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the basic Eulerian polynomials that enumerate permutations by the excedance statistic and the major index as well as the corresponding $γ$-coefficients for derangements. Our results refine the classical $γ$-positivity results for the Eulerian polynomials and the derangement polynomials. The main tools are Brändén's modified Foata--Strehl action on permutations and the recent triple statistic (des, rix, aid) equidistibuted with (exc, fix, maj).

We prove a conjecture of Haglund which can be seen as an extension of the equidistribution of the inversion number and the major index over permutations to ordered set partitions. Haglund's conjecture implicitly defines two statistics on ordered set partitions and states that they are equidistributed. The implied inversion statistic is equivalent to a statistic on ordered set partitions studied by Steingrímsson, Ishikawa, Kasraoui, and Zeng, and is known to have a nice distribution in terms of $q$-Stirling numbers. The resulting major index exhibits a combinatorial relationship between $q$-Stirling numbers and the Euler-Mahonian distribution on the symmetric group, solving a problem posed by Steingrímsson.
Mahonian STAT on words
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson introduced the notion of what is now known as a permutation vincular pattern, and based on it they re-defined known Mahonian statistics and introduced new ones, proving or conjecturing their Mahonity. These conjectures were proved by Foata and Zeilberger in 2001, and by Foata and Randrianarivony in 2006.
In 2010, Burstein refined some of these results by giving a bijection between permutations with a fixed value for the major index and those with the same value for STAT, where STAT is one of the statistics defined and proved to be Mahonian in the 2000 Babson and Steingrímsson's paper. Several other statistics are preserved as well by Burstein's bijection.
At the Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics Conference (FPSAC) in 2010, Burstein asked whether his bijection has other interesting properties. In this paper, we not only show that Burstein's bijection preserves the Eulerian statistic ides, but also use this fact, along with the bijection itself, to prove Mahonity of the statistic STAT on words we introduce in this paper. The words statistic STAT introduced by us here addresses a natural question on existence of a Mahonian words analogue of STAT on permutations. While proving Mahonity of our STAT on words, we prove a more general joint equidistribution result involving two six-tuples of statistics on (dense) words, where Burstein's bijection plays an important role.

We introduce the Major MacMahon map and show how this map interacts with the pyramid and bipyramid operators. When the Major MacMahon map is applied to the ab-index of a simplicial poset, it yields the q-analogue of n! times the h-polynomial of the poset. Applying the map to the Boolean algebra gives the distribution of the major index on the symmetric group, a seminal result due to MacMahon. Similarly, when applied to the cross-polytope we obtain the distribution of one of the major indexes on signed permutations due to Reiner.

A specialisation of a transformation formula for multi-dimensional elliptic hypergeometric series is used to provide compact, non-determinantal formulae for the generating function with respect to the major index of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes of the form "staircase minus rectangle".
A New Approach to Enumerating Statistics Modulo $n$
We find a new approach to computing the remainder of a polynomial modulo $x^n-1$; such a computation is called modular enumeration. Given a polynomial with coefficients from a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, our first main result constructs the remainder simply from the coefficients of residues of the polynomial modulo $Φ_d(x)$ for each $d\mid n$. Since such residues can often be found to have nice values, this simplifies a number of modular enumeration problems; indeed in some cases, such residues are already known while the related modular enumeration problem has remained unsolved. We list six such cases which our technique makes easy to solve. Our second main result is a formula for the unique polynomial $a$ such that $a \equiv f \mod Φ_n(x)$ and $a\equiv 0 \mod x^d-1$ for each proper divisor $d$ of $n$.
We find a formula for remainders of $q$-multinomial coefficients and for remainders of $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, reducing each problem to a finite number of cases for any fixed $n$. In the prior case, we solve an open problem posed by Hartke and Radcliffe. In considering $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, we discover a cyclic group operation on certain lattice paths which behaves predictably with regard to major index. We also make progress on a problem in modular enumeration on subset sums posed by Kitchloo and Pachter.

We give a direct combinatorial proof of the equidistribution of two pairs of permutation statistics, (des, aid) and (lec, inv), which have been previously shown to have the same joint distribution as (exc, maj), the major index and the number of excedances of a permutation. Moreover, the triple (pix, lec, inv) was shown to have the same distribution as (fix, exc, maj), where fix is the number of fixed points of a permutation. We define a new statistic aix so that our bijection maps (pix, lec, inv) to (aix, des, aid). We also find an Eulerian partner das for a Mahonian statistic mix defined using mesh patterns, so that (das, mix) is equidistributed with (des, inv).
Signed arc permutations

Arc permutations, which were originally introduced in the study of triangulations and characters, have recently been shown to have interesting combinatorial properties. The first part of this paper continues their study by providing signed enumeration formulas with respect to their descent set and major index. Next, we generalize the notion of arc permutations to the hyperoctahedral group in two different directions. We show that these extensions to type $B$ carry interesting analogues of the properties of type $A$ arc permutations, such as characterizations by pattern avoidance, and elegant unsigned and signed enumeration formulas with respect to the flag-major index.

We show that the distribution of the major index over the set of involutions in S_n that avoid the pattern 321 is given by the q-analogue of the n-th central binomial coefficient. The proof consists of a composition of three non-trivial bijections, one being the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, ultimately mapping those involutions with major index m into partitions of m whose Young diagram fits inside an n/2 by n/2 box. We also obtain a refinement that keeps track of the descent set, and we deduce an analogous result for the comajor index of 123-avoiding involutions.
Refining enumeration schemes to count according to permutation statistics

We consider the question of computing the distribution of a permutation statistics over restricted permutations via enumeration schemes. The restricted permutations are those avoiding sets of vincular patterns (which include both classical and consecutive patterns), and the statistics are described in the number of copies of certain vincular patterns such as the descent statistic and major index. An enumeration scheme is a polynomial-time algorithm (specifically, a system of recurrence relations) to compute the number of permutations avoiding a given set of vincular patterns. Enumeration schemes' most notable feature is that they may be discovered and proven via only finite computation. We prove that when a finite enumeration scheme exists to compute the number of permutations avoiding a given set of vincular patterns, the scheme can also compute the distribution of certain permutation statistics with very little extra computation.
On some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combinatorial proofs of those symmetrical identities are also constructed.
We also study some other properties of the flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 120 (2013) 1216--1234] about the unimodality of the generating function of the flag excedances over the type B derangements. Moreover, colored versions of the hook factorization and admissible inversions of permutations are found, as well as a new recurrence formula for the $(\maj-\exc,\fexc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials.
We introduce a colored analog of Rawlings major index on colored permutations and obtain an interpretation of the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions as sums of some fundamental quasisymmetric functions related with them, by applying Stanley's $P$-partition theory and a decomposition of the Chromatic quasisymmetric functions due to Shareshian and Wachs.
